8 Herren sagde nu til Josva: „Vær ikke modløs og bange! Tag hele hæren med dig og indtag Aj. Jeg vil give jer sejr over byens konge og alle hans mænd. Jeg vil give jer byen og det tilhørende landområde. 2 I skal gøre med dem, som I gjorde med kongen og indbyggerne i Jeriko, men denne gang må I selv beholde krigsbyttet og kvæget. I skal lægge baghold vest for byen.”
3-4 Så gjorde Josva og Israels hær sig klar til at angribe Aj. Josva udvalgte 30.000 krigere og gav dem følgende besked: „I skal lægge jer i baghold vest for byen og være klar til at angribe. 5 Når jeg og resten af hæren angriber Aj, kommer alle mændene ud af byen for at kæmpe ligesom sidst. Når vi så trækker os tilbage, 6 tænker de: ‚Israelitterne flygter fra os ligesom før.’ Men vi lader dem forfølge os, indtil de alle er kommet ud af byen. 7 Så springer I frem fra bagholdet og indtager byen. Herren vil give jer sejr, 8 og I skal sætte ild til byen, sådan som han har befalet. Det er en ordre!”
9 Med disse ord sendte Josva mændene af sted, og de gik i ly af natten hen vest for byen mellem Aj og Betel, hvor de lagde sig i skjul. Men Josva blev den nat hos resten af hæren. 10 Tidligt næste morgen samlede Josva sine mænd og marcherede sammen med de israelitiske ledere mod Aj. 11 De slog lejr nord for byen, på den anden side af en dal. 12 Om natten sendte Josva endnu 5000 mand af sted, der skulle slutte sig til bagholdet vest for byen, 13 men selv gik Josva ned i dalen.
14 Ajs konge kunne se israelitternes lejr på den anden side af dalen, og tidligt den næste morgen rykkede han ud og angreb dem på et plateau med udsigt over Jordandalen uden at vide, at resten af hæren lå i baghold vest for byen. 15 Da Josvas hærafdeling lod sig slå på flugt og flygtede østpå mod ørkenen, 16 fik alle byens mænd ordre til at sætte efter dem. På den måde blev de lokket væk fra byen. 17 Der var ikke en eneste mand tilbage i Aj,[a] for alle var med til at forfølge israelitterne, så byen lå vidt åben og forsvarsløs.
18 Da sagde Herren til Josva: „Ræk dit spyd ud mod Aj, for jeg vil give dig byen.” Josva gjorde, som Herren havde sagt, 19 og da mændene, der lå i baghold, så signalet, sprang de frem fra deres skjul og løb ind mod byen. Den blev hurtigt indtaget og stod snart i lys lue. 20-21 Da mændene fra Aj så sig tilbage og opdagede de store røgskyer over byen, var de klar over, at de var lokket i en fælde. Også Josva og de flygtende israelitter så røgen og vidste derfor, at bagholdsangrebet var lykkedes. Israelitterne vendte nu om og angreb deres forfølgere. 22 Samtidig kom israelitterne fra bagholdet ud fra byen og angreb fjendens bagtrop. Ajs hær var gået i fælden, og alle blev hugget ned, 23 bortset fra kongen, der blev taget til fange og ført frem for Josva.
24 Da Israels hær havde gjort det af med Ajs hær, vendte de tilbage og dræbte dem, der var efterladt i byen. 25 Sådan blev hele Ajs befolkning, 12.000 i alt, udryddet på en enkelt dag. 26 Først da den sidste indbygger var slået ihjel, sænkede Josva spyddet. 27 Det eneste, der blev skånet, var kvæget og krigsbyttet, som israelitterne på Herrens befaling beholdt. 28 Aj blev forvandlet til en ruinhob, hvilket den er den dag i dag.
29 Ajs konge blev hængt op på en pæl, men ved solnedgang tog Josva liget ned og slængte det foran byens port, hvorefter man dængede sten ovenpå, og den stendynge ligger der endnu.
Josva bygger et alter og minder folket om Moselovens bud
30 Senere byggede Josva på Ebals bjerg et alter for Herren, Israels Gud, 31 efter de forskrifter, der står i Moseloven: „Byg mit alter af kampesten, der ikke er tilhuggede eller forarbejdede med jernredskaber.” Og præsterne ofrede brændofre og takofre til Herren. 32 Mens Israelitterne så til, skrev Josva lovens bud på alterets sten.
33 Hele folket, deres ledere, administratorer og dommere samt de fremmede iblandt dem, blev derpå delt i to grupper. Den ene gruppe stillede sig ved foden af Garizims bjerg, og den anden gruppe ved foden af Ebals bjerg. De to grupper stod altså over for hinanden, og præsterne, som bar pagtens ark, stillede sig midt imellem dem. Det skete alt sammen, sådan som Moses havde forordnet, at Israels folk skulle velsignes. 34 Josva oplæste nu alle velsignelserne og forbandelserne, som Moses havde nedskrevet i lovbogen. 35 Hver eneste af Moses’ befalinger blev læst op for denne forsamling af mænd, kvinder, børn og de fremmede, som boede iblandt israelitterne.

Ai Destroyed
8 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid;(A) do not be discouraged.(B) Take the whole army(C) with you, and go up and attack Ai.(D) For I have delivered(E) into your hands the king of Ai, his people, his city and his land. 2 You shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king, except that you may carry off their plunder(F) and livestock for yourselves.(G) Set an ambush(H) behind the city.”
3 So Joshua and the whole army moved out to attack Ai. He chose thirty thousand of his best fighting men and sent them out at night 4 with these orders: “Listen carefully. You are to set an ambush behind the city. Don’t go very far from it. All of you be on the alert. 5 I and all those with me will advance on the city, and when the men come out against us, as they did before, we will flee from them. 6 They will pursue us until we have lured them away from the city, for they will say, ‘They are running away from us as they did before.’ So when we flee from them, 7 you are to rise up from ambush and take the city. The Lord your God will give it into your hand.(I) 8 When you have taken the city, set it on fire.(J) Do what the Lord has commanded.(K) See to it; you have my orders.”
9 Then Joshua sent them off, and they went to the place of ambush(L) and lay in wait between Bethel and Ai, to the west of Ai—but Joshua spent that night with the people.
10 Early the next morning(M) Joshua mustered his army, and he and the leaders of Israel(N) marched before them to Ai. 11 The entire force that was with him marched up and approached the city and arrived in front of it. They set up camp north of Ai, with the valley between them and the city. 12 Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city. 13 So the soldiers took up their positions—with the main camp to the north of the city and the ambush to the west of it. That night Joshua went into the valley.
14 When the king of Ai saw this, he and all the men of the city hurried out early in the morning to meet Israel in battle at a certain place overlooking the Arabah.(O) But he did not know(P) that an ambush had been set against him behind the city. 15 Joshua and all Israel let themselves be driven back(Q) before them, and they fled toward the wilderness.(R) 16 All the men of Ai were called to pursue them, and they pursued Joshua and were lured away(S) from the city. 17 Not a man remained in Ai or Bethel who did not go after Israel. They left the city open and went in pursuit of Israel.
18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Hold out toward Ai the javelin(T) that is in your hand,(U) for into your hand I will deliver the city.” So Joshua held out toward the city the javelin that was in his hand.(V) 19 As soon as he did this, the men in the ambush rose quickly(W) from their position and rushed forward. They entered the city and captured it and quickly set it on fire.(X)
20 The men of Ai looked back and saw the smoke of the city rising up into the sky,(Y) but they had no chance to escape in any direction; the Israelites who had been fleeing toward the wilderness had turned back against their pursuers. 21 For when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that smoke was going up from it, they turned around(Z) and attacked the men of Ai. 22 Those in the ambush also came out of the city against them, so that they were caught in the middle, with Israelites on both sides. Israel cut them down, leaving them neither survivors nor fugitives.(AA) 23 But they took the king of Ai alive(AB) and brought him to Joshua.
24 When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai in the fields and in the wilderness where they had chased them, and when every one of them had been put to the sword, all the Israelites returned to Ai and killed those who were in it. 25 Twelve thousand men and women fell that day—all the people of Ai.(AC) 26 For Joshua did not draw back the hand that held out his javelin(AD) until he had destroyed[a](AE) all who lived in Ai.(AF) 27 But Israel did carry off for themselves the livestock and plunder of this city, as the Lord had instructed Joshua.(AG)
28 So Joshua burned(AH) Ai[b](AI) and made it a permanent heap of ruins,(AJ) a desolate place to this day.(AK) 29 He impaled the body of the king of Ai on a pole and left it there until evening. At sunset,(AL) Joshua ordered them to take the body from the pole and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And they raised a large pile of rocks(AM) over it, which remains to this day.
The Covenant Renewed at Mount Ebal
30 Then Joshua built on Mount Ebal(AN) an altar(AO) to the Lord, the God of Israel, 31 as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses—an altar of uncut stones, on which no iron tool(AP) had been used. On it they offered to the Lord burnt offerings and sacrificed fellowship offerings.(AQ) 32 There, in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua wrote on stones a copy of the law of Moses.(AR) 33 All the Israelites, with their elders, officials and judges, were standing on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the Lord, facing the Levitical(AS) priests who carried it. Both the foreigners living among them and the native-born(AT) were there. Half of the people stood in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal,(AU) as Moses the servant of the Lord had formerly commanded when he gave instructions to bless the people of Israel.
34 Afterward, Joshua read all the words of the law—the blessings and the curses—just as it is written in the Book of the Law.(AV) 35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the foreigners who lived among them.(AW)

Tigoma ang tanan mong mga sundalo ug sulonga ninyo pag-usab ang Ai, kay gitugyan ko na sa imong mga kamot ang hari sa Ai, ang iyang katawhan, ang iyang lungsod, ug ang iyang mga yuta. 2 Himoa ninyo ngadto sa Ai ug sa hari niini ang inyong gihimo sa Jerico ug sa hari niini; apan niining higayona, mahimo na ninyong kuhaon ang ilang mga kabtangan ug mga kahayopan alang sa inyong kaugalingon. Pangandam kamo ug sulonga ninyo sila agi sa luyo nga bahin sa lungsod.”
3 Busa nangandam si Josue ug ang tanan niyang mga sundalo sa pagsulong sa Ai. Nagpili si Josue ug 30,000 ka mga sundalo nga hanas gayod sa pagpakiggira, ug gipalakaw sila sa gabii. 4 Gimandoan niya sila niini: “Panago kamo sa luyo nga bahin sa lungsod, apan ayaw kamo pagpalayo kaayo. Siguroha ninyo nga matuman gayod ninyo kini.” 9 Unya gipalakaw sila ni Josue, ug nanago sila sa kasadpang bahin sa Ai, tunga-tunga sa Ai ug Betel. Nagpabilin si Josue sa kampo uban sa mga tawo niadtong gabhiona.
10 Pagkaugma, sayo kaayong gitigom ni Josue ang iyang mga tawo. Siya ug ang mga pangulo sa Israel ang nanguna sa mga tawo sa ilang pagpaingon sa Ai. 11 Miabot sila sa usa ka dapit nga nagaatubang sa lungsod, sa may amihan niini, ug nagpatindog sila didto sa ilang mga tolda. Wala sila masayod nga may mosulong kanila gikan sa luyo nga bahin sa lungsod. 15 Si Josue ug ang iyang mga tawo nagpakaaron-ingnon nga napildi ug nangatras paingon sa kamingawan. 16 Busa gigukod sila sa tanang kalalakin-an sa Ai hangtod nga nahilayo sila sa lungsod. 17 Tanang kalalakin-an sa Ai ug sa Betel migukod sa mga Israelinhon, busa walay nabilin nga modepensa sa lungsod.
18 Miingon ang Ginoo kang Josue, “Ipunting ang imong bangkaw sa Ai kay ihatag ko kini kaninyo.” Busa gipunting ni Josue ang iyang bangkaw sa Ai. 19 Paghimo niya niini, nanggawas dayon ang iyang mga tawo sa ilang gitagoan. Gisulod nila ug giilog ang lungsod ug gidali-dali ug sunog. 20 Sa paglingi sa mga taga-Ai, nakita nila nga miulbo ang aso gikan sa lungsod. Wala na silay madaganan, kay giatubang sila pagkalit sa mga Israelinhon nga ilang gigukod paingon sa kamingawan. 21 Kay sa pagkakita ni Josue ug sa iyang mga tawo nga nakasulod na ang ilang mga kauban sa lungsod ug ginasunog na nila kini, mibalik sila ug midasdas sa mga taga-Ai. 22 Midasdas usab ang mga Israelinhon nga gikan sa lungsod, busa nataliwad-an ang mga taga-Ai. Gipatay nila silang tanan; walay nakaikyas o nahibiling buhi kanila, 23 gawas lang sa ilang hari. Gibihag nila kini ug gidala kang Josue.
24 Sa dihang nahurot na nilag patay ang tanang mga taga-Ai nga migukod kanila sa mga uma ug kamingawan, namalik sila sa lungsod ug gipamatay usab ang tanang nahibilin didto. 25 Niadtong adlawa, namatay ang tanang lumulupyo sa Ai—12,000 tanan, lalaki ug babaye. 26 Padayon nga gipunting ni Josue ang iyang bangkaw hangtod nga nalaglag niya sa hingpit ang tanang taga-Ai. 27 Gipanguha sa mga Israelinhon ang mga kahayopan ug mga kabtangan sa lungsod, sumala sa giingon sa Ginoo kang Josue. 28 Pagkahuman gipasunog ni Josue ang tibuok nga Ai, ug wala na gayod kini matukod pa pag-usab. 29 Gipabitay niya ang hari didto sa kahoy ug gipasagdan kini didto hangtod sa hapon. Pagsalop na sa adlaw, gipakuha ni Josue ang patayng lawas ug gipalabay didto sa gawas sa pultahan sa lungsod. Gitabonan nila kini ug mga bato, ug hangtod karon makita pa kining mga batoha.
Gibasa ang Kasugoan didto sa Bukid sa Ebal
30 Unya, nagpahimo si Josue ug halaran didto sa Bukid sa Ebal alang sa Ginoo, ang Dios sa Israel. 31 Gipahimo niya kini sumala sa sugo ni Moises, nga alagad sa Ginoo, ngadto sa mga Israelinhon. Kini nga sugo nahisulat sa Libro sa Kasugoan ni Moises, ug mao kini ang nahisulat: “Maghimo kag halaran nga bato nga wala sapsapi ug puthaw.” Ug sa ibabaw sa maong halaran naghalad sila ug mga halad nga sinunog ug mga halad nga alang sa maayo nga relasyon. 32 Atubangan sa mga Israelinhon, gikopya ni Josue diha sa mga bato[b] ang kasugoan nga gisulat ni Moises. 33 Ang tanang mga Israelinhon, uban sa ilang mga pangulo, mga opisyales, ug mga maghuhukom, apil ang mga langyaw nga nagapuyo uban kanila, nagatindog nga nagaatubangay. Ang katunga kanila nagatalikod sa Bukid sa Gerizim ug ang laing katunga nagatalikod sa Bukid sa Ebal. Taliwala kanila nagatindog ang mga pari nga nagdayong sa sudlanan sa Kasabotan sa Ginoo. Si Moises nga alagad sa Ginoo nagsugo kanila kaniadto sa paghimo niini pag-abot sa higayon nga dawaton na nila ang bendisyon.
34 Unya gibasa ni Josue ang Libro sa Kasugoan, lakip ang pagpanalangin ug ang pagpanghimaraot nga nahisulat niini. 35 Gitagsa-tagsa pagbasa ni Josue ang mga sugo ni Moises atubangan sa tibuok katilingban sa Israel, apil na ang mga babaye, kabataan, ug ang mga langyaw nga nagapuyo uban kanila.

8 Now the Lord said to Joshua: (A)“Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed; take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, (B)I have given into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land. 2 And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to (C)Jericho and its king. Only (D)its spoil and its cattle you shall take as booty for yourselves. Lay an ambush for the city behind it.”
3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai; and Joshua chose thirty thousand mighty men of valor and sent them away by night. 4 And he commanded them, saying: “Behold, (E)you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Do not go very far from the city, but all of you be ready. 5 Then I and all the people who are with me will approach the city; and it will come about, when they come out against us as at the first, that (F)we shall flee before them. 6 For they will come out after us till we have drawn them from the city, for they will say, ‘They are fleeing before us as at the first.’ Therefore we will flee before them. 7 Then you shall rise from the ambush and seize the city, for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hand. 8 And it will be, when you have taken the city, that you shall set the city on fire. According to the commandment of the Lord you shall do. (G)See, I have commanded you.”
9 Joshua therefore sent them out; and they went to lie in ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai; but Joshua lodged that night among the people. 10 Then Joshua rose up early in the morning and mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai. 11 (H)And all the people of war who were with him went up and drew near; and they came before the city and camped on the north side of Ai. Now a valley lay between them and Ai. 12 So he took about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of [a]the city. 13 And when they had set the people, all the army that was on the north of the city, and its rear guard on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.
14 Now it happened, when the king of Ai saw it, that the men of the city hurried and rose early and went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at an appointed place before the plain. But he (I)did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city. 15 And Joshua and all Israel (J)made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness. 16 So all the people who were in Ai were called together to pursue them. And they pursued Joshua and were drawn away from the city. 17 There was not a man left in Ai or Bethel who did not go out after Israel. So they left the city open and pursued Israel.
18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Stretch out the spear that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” And Joshua stretched out the spear that was in his hand toward the city. 19 So those in ambush arose quickly out of their place; they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and they entered the city and took it, and hurried to set the city on fire. 20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended to heaven. So they had no power to flee this way or that way, and the people who had fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.
21 Now when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that the smoke of the city ascended, they turned back and struck down the men of Ai. 22 Then the others came out of the city against them; so they were caught in the midst of Israel, some on this side and some on that side. And they struck them down, so that they (K)let none of them remain or escape. 23 But the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.
24 And it came to pass when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness where they pursued them, and when they all had fallen by the edge of the sword until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword. 25 So it was that all who fell that day, both men and women, were twelve thousand—all the people of Ai. 26 For Joshua did not draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the spear, until he had (L)utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. 27 (M)Only the livestock and the spoil of that city Israel took as booty for themselves, according to the word of the Lord which He had (N)commanded Joshua. 28 So Joshua burned Ai and made it (O)a heap forever, a desolation to this day. 29 (P)And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until evening. (Q)And as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his corpse down from the tree, cast it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and (R)raise over it a great heap of stones that remains to this day.
Joshua Renews the Covenant(S)
30 Now Joshua built an altar to the Lord God of Israel (T)in Mount Ebal, 31 as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses: (U)“an altar of whole stones over which no man has wielded an iron tool.” And (V)they offered on it burnt offerings to the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings. 32 And there, in the presence of the children of Israel, (W)he wrote on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written. 33 Then all Israel, with their elders and officers and judges, stood on either side of the ark before the priests, the Levites, (X)who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, (Y)the stranger as well as he who was born among them. Half of them were in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, (Z)as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel. 34 And afterward (AA)he read all the words of the law, (AB)the blessings and the cursings, according to all that is written in the (AC)Book of the Law. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded which Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel, (AD)with the women, the little ones, (AE)and the strangers who were living among them.
