Josuas sista tal till folket
24 (A) Josua samlade alla Israels stammar till Shekem. Han kallade till sig de äldste i Israel, dess huvudmän, domare och förmän, och de trädde fram inför Gud. 2 (B) Och Josua sade till allt folket:
”Så säger Herren, Israels Gud: På andra sidan floden bodde era fäder i forna tider, och även Tera, Abrahams och Nahors far. Där tjänade de andra gudar. 3 (C) Men jag hämtade er fader Abraham från andra sidan floden och lät honom vandra genom hela Kanaans land, och jag gjorde hans avkomma talrik. Jag gav honom Isak, 4 (D) och åt Isak gav jag Jakob och Esau. Jag gav Seirs bergsbygd till besittning åt Esau. Men Jakob och hans söner drog ner till Egypten.
5 (E) Sedan sände jag Mose och Aron och slog Egypten med plågor som jag sände bland dem, och därefter förde jag er ut. 6 (F) När jag förde era fäder ut ur Egypten och ni hade kommit till havet, förföljde egyptierna era fäder med vagnar och ryttare[a] ända till Röda havet. 7 (G) Då ropade de till Herren, och han satte mörker mellan er och egyptierna och lät havet komma över dem så att det täckte dem. Ni såg med egna ögon vad jag gjorde med egyptierna. Sedan bodde ni i öknen en lång tid.
8 (H) Därefter förde jag er in i amoreernas land, de som bodde på andra sidan Jordan. Och de stred mot er, men jag gav dem i er hand så att ni intog deras land, och jag förgjorde dem för er. 9 (I) Då reste sig Balak, Sippors son, kungen i Moab, och gav sig i strid med Israel. Och han sände bud efter Bileam, Beors son, för att förbanna er. 10 Men jag ville inte höra på Bileam, utan han måste välsigna er, och jag räddade er ur hans hand.
11 (J) När ni hade gått över Jordan och kommit till Jeriko stred Jerikos invånare mot er, och det gjorde även amoreerna, perisseerna, kananeerna, hetiterna, girgasheerna, hiveerna och jebusiterna. Men jag gav dem i er hand. 12 (K) Jag sände panik[b] framför er, och det jagade bort amoreernas båda kungar framför er. Det var inte genom ditt svärd eller din båge. 13 (L) Och jag gav er ett land som ni inte hade arbetat med och städer som ni inte hade byggt, och i dem fick ni bo. Ni fick äta av vingårdar och olivlundar som ni inte hade planterat.
14 Så frukta nu Herren och tjäna honom helhjärtat och i sanning. Gör er av med de gudar som era fäder tjänade på andra sidan floden och i Egypten, och tjäna Herren. 15 Men om ni inte vill tjäna Herren, så välj i dag vem ni vill tjäna, antingen de gudar som era fäder tjänade på andra sidan floden eller de gudar som dyrkas av amoreerna i vilkas land ni bor. Men jag och mitt hus, vi vill tjäna Herren.”
16 Då svarade folket: ”Aldrig att vi skulle överge Herren och tjäna andra gudar! 17 För Herren är vår Gud, han är den som har fört oss och våra fäder ut ur Egyptens land, ur träldomshuset. Han har gjort dessa stora under inför våra ögon och bevarat oss hela den väg vi har vandrat och bland alla de folk vilkas land vi har dragit igenom. 18 Herren har jagat i väg alla dessa folk för oss, också amoreerna som bodde i landet. Vi vill också tjäna Herren, för han är vår Gud.”
19 (M) Josua sade till folket: ”Ni kan inte tjäna Herren, för han är en helig Gud. Han är en nitisk Gud, och han kommer inte att tolerera era överträdelser och era synder. 20 (N) Om ni överger Herren och tjänar främmande gudar, kommer han att vända sig bort och låta det gå er illa och förgöra er, efter att förut ha gjort er gott.” 21 Men folket sade till Josua: ”Nej, vi vill tjäna Herren!” 22 Då sade Josua till folket: ”Ni är nu själva vittnen mot er, att ni har valt Herren för att tjäna honom.” De svarade: ”Ja.” 23 (O) Han sade: ”Gör er då av med de främmande gudar som ni har bland er, och vänd era hjärtan till Herren, Israels Gud!” 24 Folket svarade Josua: ”Herren vår Gud vill vi tjäna, och hans röst vill vi lyda.”
25 Den dagen slöt Josua ett förbund[c] med folket och gav dem lag och rätt i Shekem. 26 (P) Josua nertecknade allt detta i Guds lagbok. Han tog en stor sten och reste den där under terebinten som stod vid Herrens helgedom. 27 Och Josua sade till allt folket: ”Se, denna sten ska vara vittne mot oss, för den har hört alla de ord som Herren har talat med oss. Den ska vara vittne mot er så att ni inte förnekar er Gud.” 28 (Q) Sedan lät Josua folket gå, var och en till sin arvedel.
Josuas och Eleasars död
29 (R) En tid härefter[d] dog Herrens tjänare Josua, Nuns son, hundratio år gammal. 30 (S) Och man begravde honom på hans arvedels område, i Timnat-Sera i Efraims bergsbygd, norr om berget Gaash.
31 Och Israel tjänade Herren så länge Josua levde och så länge de äldste levde, de som var kvar efter Josua och kände till alla de gärningar som Herren hade gjort för Israel.
32 (T) Josefs ben, som Israels barn hade fört upp ur Egypten, begravde de i Shekem, på den mark som Jakob hade köpt av barnen till Hamor, Shekems far, för hundra kesitor[e]. Josefs barn fick detta till arvedel.
33 Även Eleasar, Arons son, dog, och man begravde honom på den höjd som hans son Pinehas hade fått i Efraims bergsbygd.

Josuas talar till hela folket
24 Josua sammankallade sedan allt folket i Israel till Sikem tillsammans med alla ledarna, äldste, domare och övriga befattningshavare, och de kom och ställde sig inför Herren.
2 Sedan höll Josua följande tal till dem:Herren, Israels Gud, säger: 'Era förfäder tillsammans med Tera, Abrahams och Nahors far, bodde öster om floden Eufrat, och de tillbad andra gudar.
3 Men jag tog er far Abraham från landet på andra sidan floden och ledde honom in i Kanaans land och gav honom många efterkommande genom hans son Isak.
4 De barn som jag gav Isak hette Jakob och Esau. Åt Esau gav jag Seirs bergsbygd, medan Jakob och hans barn begav sig till Egypten.
5 Sedan sände jag Mose och Aron för att framkalla fruktansvärda plågor över Egypten, och därefter ledde jag ut mina barn därifrån som fria människor.
6 Men när de kom till Röda havet kom egyptierna efter dem med hästar och vagnar.
7 Då ropade Israel till mig, och jag lät ett mörker komma mellan dem och egyptierna, och jag lät havet komma över egyptierna så att de alla drunknade. Ni såg vad jag gjorde. Sedan bodde Israel i öknen under många år.
8 Slutligen förde jag in er i amoreernas land på andra sidan Jordan. De stred mot er, men jag förgjorde dem och gav er deras land.
9 Sedan började kung Balak från Moab krig mot Israel. Han bad Bileam, Beors son, att förbanna er,
10 men jag hörde inte på honom. I stället fick jag honom att välsigna er, och så befriades Israel ur hans hand.
11 Sedan gick ni över floden Jordan och kom till Jeriko. Männen i staden stred mot er, och det gjorde också amoreerna, perisseerna, kananeerna, hetiterna, girgaseerna, hiveerna och jebuseerna. De stred mot er i tur och ordning, men jag besegrade dem alla.
12 Och jag sände getingar framför er för att fördriva amoreernas båda kungar och deras folk. Det var inte era svärd eller bågar som gav er segern!
13 Jag gav er länder som ni inte hade kämpat för och städer som ni inte hade byggt upp, de städer där ni nu bor. Jag gav er vingårdar och olivplanteringar, fastän ni inte hade planterat dem.'
14 Därför ska ni frukta Herren och tjäna honom troget och uppriktigt. Avskaffa för alltid de avgudar som era förfäder tillbad, när de bodde på andra sidan floden Eufrat och i Egypten! Tillbed Herren och ingen annan!
15 Men om ni inte vill lyda Herren, så får ni i dag besluta vem ni tänker lyda. Ska det vara de gudar som era förfäder tillbad på andra sidan Eufrat eller amoreernas gudar här i landet? Jag och min familj tänker i alla fall tjäna Herren.
Hela folket lovar att följa Herren
16 Och folket svarade: Vi skulle inte kunna tänka oss att överge Herren och tillbe andra gudar.
17 För det var ju Herren, vår Gud, som befriade våra förfäder från slaveriet i Egypten. Han är den Gud som gjorde så många märkliga under inför folkets ögon under vandringen genom öknen och som räddade oss från våra fiender, när vi vandrade genom deras länder.
18 Det var Herren som drev ut amoreerna och de andra folken som bodde här i landet. Vi väljer alltså Herren, för det är bara han som är Gud.
19 Men Josua svarade folket: Ni kan inte tillbe Herren, för han är en helig Gud. Han kommer inte att ha överseende med era synder och er olydnad.
20 Om ni överger honom och tillber andra gudar kommer han att förgöra er, fastän han har vårdat sig om er under så lång tid.
21 Vi väljer Herren! svarade folket.
22 Ni har själva sagt det. Ni har nu valt att lyda Herren, sa Josua. Ja, vi har fattat vårt beslut! svarade de.
23 Då måste ni förstöra alla avgudar ni äger, sa Josua till dem. Ni måste lyda Herren, Israels Gud.
24 Ja, vi ska tjäna och lyda Herren och ingen annan, förklarade folket ännu en gång.
25 Josua ingick ett förbund med dem den dagen i Sikem, och han upprättade ett förbund mellan dem och Gud.
26 Josua antecknade folkets svar i Guds lagbok och tog en stor sten och rullade fram den under den stora ek som stod vid Herrens tält.
27 Den här stenen har hört allt Herren har sagt. Den kommer att vittna mot er om ni tar tillbaka era ord, förklarade Josua.
28 Sedan skickade han hem folket till de olika delarna av landet.
29 En tid därefter dog han, 110 år gammal.
30 Han begravdes på sitt eget område i Timnat-Sera i Efraims bergsbygd, på norra sidan av berget Gaas.
31 Israel lydde Herren under hela Josuas livstid och fortsatte att göra det så länge de ledare levde, som hade bevittnat de märkliga under som Herren gjort för Israel.
32 Josefs ben, som Israels folk hade tagit med sig vid uttåget ur Egypten, begravdes i Sikem, på den mark som Jakob hade köpt för 800 kronor av Hamors söner. (Marken tillhörde det område som tilldelats Josefs stam.)
33 Och Eleasar, Arons son, dog och begravdes i Efraims bergsbygd i Gibea, den stad som hans son Pinehas hade blivit tilldelad.

24 Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, for their heads, for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God. 2 Joshua said to all the people, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Your fathers lived of old time beyond the River, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor. They served other gods. 3 I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his offspring,[a] and gave him Isaac. 4 I gave to Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave to Esau Mount Seir, to possess it. Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.
5 “‘I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out. 6 I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and you came to the sea. The Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and with horsemen to the Red Sea. 7 When they cried out to Yahweh, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea on them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt. You lived in the wilderness many days.
8 “‘I brought you into the land of the Amorites, that lived beyond the Jordan. They fought with you, and I gave them into your hand. You possessed their land, and I destroyed them from before you. 9 Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel. He sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you, 10 but I would not listen to Balaam; therefore he blessed you still. So I delivered you out of his hand.
11 “‘You went over the Jordan, and came to Jericho. The men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I delivered them into your hand. 12 I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; not with your sword, nor with your bow. 13 I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and cities which you didn’t build, and you live in them. You eat of vineyards and olive groves which you didn’t plant.’
14 “Now therefore fear Yahweh, and serve him in sincerity and in truth. Put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, in Egypt; and serve Yahweh. 15 If it seems evil to you to serve Yahweh, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve Yahweh.”
16 The people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake Yahweh, to serve other gods; 17 for it is Yahweh our God who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way in which we went, and among all the peoples through the middle of whom we passed. 18 Yahweh drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve Yahweh; for he is our God.”
19 Joshua said to the people, “You can’t serve Yahweh, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He will not forgive your disobedience nor your sins. 20 If you forsake Yahweh, and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after he has done you good.”
21 The people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve Yahweh.” 22 Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen Yahweh yourselves, to serve him.”
They said, “We are witnesses.”
23 “Now therefore put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to Yahweh, the God of Israel.”
24 The people said to Joshua, “We will serve Yahweh our God, and we will listen to his voice.”
25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. 26 Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of Yahweh. 27 Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us, for it has heard all Yahweh’s words which he spoke to us. It shall be therefore a witness against you, lest you deny your God.” 28 So Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance.
29 After these things, Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Yahweh, died, being one hundred ten years old. 30 They buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash. 31 Israel served Yahweh all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, and had known all the work of Yahweh, that he had worked for Israel. 32 They buried the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, in Shechem, in the parcel of ground which Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of silver.[b] They became the inheritance of the children of Joseph. 33 Eleazar the son of Aaron died. They buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given him in the hill country of Ephraim.

2 And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.

18 And the Lord drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the Lord; for he is our God.
19 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the Lord: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.
20 If ye forsake the Lord, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.
21 And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the Lord.
22 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the Lord, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.
23 Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the Lord God of Israel.
24 And the people said unto Joshua, The Lord our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.
25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.
26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the Lord.
