Altaret vid Jordan
22 Då kallade Josua till sig rubeniterna och gaditerna och ena hälften av Manasse stam 2 och sade till dem: "Ni har hållit allt vad Herrens tjänare Mose har befallt er och ni har lyssnat till mina ord, vad jag än befallt er. 3 Ni har under denna långa tid, ända till denna dag, inte övergivit era bröder, och ni har hållit vad Herren, er Gud, har befallt i sina bud. 4 Och nu har Herren, er Gud, låtit era bröder komma till ro, så som han lovade dem. Vänd därför nu om och gå hem till era tält i det land ni har fått till besittning, det som Herrens tjänare Mose har gett er på andra sidan Jordan. 5 Men var mycket noga att hålla fast vid och följa de bud och den lag som Herrens tjänare Mose har gett er, så att ni älskar Herren, er Gud. Vandra på alla hans vägar, iaktta hans bud, håll er till honom och tjäna honom av hela ert hjärta och av hela er själ." 6 Och Josua välsignade dem och sände i väg dem, och de gick hem till sina tält. 7 Åt ena hälften av Manasse stam hade Mose givit land i Basan, och åt andra hälften hade Josua givit land med deras bröder på andra sidan Jordan, på västra sidan. Då nu Josua sände i väg dem till sina boningar, välsignade han dem 8 och sade till dem: "Vänd tillbaka till era tält med de stora rikedomar ni har fått, med mycket boskap och med silver, guld, koppar och järn och kläder i stor mängd. Dela bytet från era fiender med era bröder.
9 Så vände Rubens barn och Gads barn och ena hälften av Manasse stam tillbaka och drog bort från de övriga israeliterna, bort från Silo i Kanaans land, för att bege sig till Gilead, sitt eget land, där de skulle ha sina besittningar efter Herrens befallning genom Mose.
10 När så Rubens barn, Gads barn och ena hälften av Manasse stam kom till gränstrakterna vid Jordan i Kanaans land, byggde de ett altare där vid Jordan, ett ansenligt altare. 11 När israeliterna hörde sägas: "Se, Rubens barn och Gads barn och ena hälften av Manasse stam har byggt ett altare vid Kanaans gräns, i gränstrakterna vid Jordan, på israeliternas sida," 12 då samlades hela deras menighet i Silo för att dra upp till strid mot dem.
13 Till Rubens barn, Gads barn och ena hälften av Manasse stam, i Gileads land, sände Israels barn Pinehas, prästen Eleasars son, 14 och med honom tio furstar, en för var stamfamilj inom Israels alla stammar. Var och en av dem var huvudman för sin familj inom Israels ätter.
15 När de kom till Rubens barn, Gads barn och ena hälften av Manasse stam, i Gileads land, sade de till dem: 16 "Så säger Herrens hela menighet: Vad är det för otrohet som ni har begått mot Israels Gud, då ni i dag har vänt er bort från Herren genom att bygga ett altare och därigenom i dag varit upproriska mot Herren? 17 Är det inte nog med vår missgärning vid Peor? Från den har vi än i dag inte blivit renade fastän Herrens menighet drabbades av plåga? 18 Vill ni nu i dag vända er bort från Herren? Om ni i dag är upproriska mot Herren, så skall förvisso i morgon hans vrede drabba Israels hela menighet. 19 Men om det land ni har fått till besittning är orent, så kom över till det land Herren har tagit till besittning, där Herrens tabernakel har sin plats, och ha era besittningar där bland oss. Var inte upproriska mot Herren och trotsa inte oss genom att bygga er ett altare som är ett annat än Herrens, vår Guds, altare. 20 När Akan, Seras son, trolöst hade förgripit sig på det tillspillogivna, kom inte då vrede över Israels hela menighet? Och han dog inte ensam genom sin missgärning!"
21 Rubens barn, Gads barn och ena hälften av Manasse stam svarade då huvudmännen för Israels ätter: 22 "Gud den mäktige, Herren den mäktige, Herren är Gud! Han vet och Israel skall veta: Om detta har skett i uppror och otrohet mot Herren - så rädda oss inte i dag! 23 Om vi har byggt altaret åt oss därför att vi vill vända oss bort från Herren, och om det är för att vi vill offra brännoffer eller matoffer på det eller frambära gemenskapsoffer på det, då må Herren själv utkräva vedergällning för vad vi har gjort oss skyldiga till. 24 Nej, sanningen är den att vi gjorde detta av rädsla, av det skälet att vi tänkte att era barn en dag skulle säga till våra barn: 'Vad har ni med Herren, Israels Gud, att göra? 25 Herren har ju satt Jordan till gräns mellan oss och er, ni Rubens barn och Gads barn. Ni har ingen del i Herren.' Och så skulle era barn få våra barn att upphöra med att frukta Herren. 26 Därför sade vi: Låt oss nu sätta igång med att bygga detta altare, men inte till brännoffer eller till slaktoffer, 27 utan till att vara ett vittne mellan oss och er och mellan våra efterkommande, att vi vill förrätta Herrens tjänst inför hans ansikte med våra brännoffer och slaktoffer och gemenskapsoffer, så att era barn i framtiden inte kan säga till våra barn: 'Ni har ingen del i Herren.' 28 Och vi tänkte: Om det i framtiden händer att de säger så till oss och våra efterkommande, då kan vi svara: 'Se på den avbildning av Herrens altare som våra fäder har gjort, men inte till brännoffer eller till slaktoffer, utan till att vara ett vittne mellan oss och er.' 29 Det vare främmande för oss att vara upproriska mot Herren och nu vända oss bort från Herren genom att bygga ett altare till brännoffer eller matoffer eller slaktoffer, ett annat än Herrens, vår Guds, altare, som står framför hans tabernakel."
30 Då nu prästen Pinehas och menighetens furstar, huvudmännen för Israels ätter som var med honom, hörde vad Rubens barn, Gads barn och Manasse barn sade, blev de nöjda. 31 Och Pinehas, prästen Eleasars son, sade till Rubens barn, Gads barn och Manasses barn: "I dag vet vi att Herren är mitt ibland oss, eftersom ni inte har begått en sådan otrohet mot Herren. Ni har nu räddat Israels barn undan Herrens hand."
32 Därefter vände Pinehas, prästen Eleasars son, och furstarna tillbaka från Rubens barn och Gads barn i Gileads land, in i Kanaans land till de övriga israeliterna och lämnade sin rapport. 33 Den tillfredsställde Israels barn, och Israels barn lovade Gud och talade inte mer om att dra upp till strid mot dem för att fördärva det land där Rubens barn och Gads barn bodde.
34 Och Rubens barn och Gads barn gav altaret detta namn: "Ett vittne mellan oss att Herren är Gud".

Stammarna i öster bygger ett altare
22 Josua sammankallade nu trupperna från Rubens och Gads stammar och från halva Manasses stam
2-3 och höll följande tal till dem:Ni har gjort allt vad Herrens tjänare Mose befallde er, och ni har följt varje order jag gett er, varje order från Herren, er Gud. Under den här långa tiden har ni inte övergett era bröder utan hållit ihop.
4 Nu har Herren låtit oss få fred, som han lovade. Vänd nu tillbaka hem till det land som ni fått av Herrens tjänare Mose, landet på andra sidan floden Jordan!
5 Men var angelägna om att också i fortsättningen följa alla de befallningar Mose gav er. Älska Herren och följ hans plan med era liv! Håll fast vid honom och tjäna honom innerligt och med entusiasm!
6 Sedan välsignade Josua dem och skickade hem dem.
7-8 Mose hade tilldelat ena halvan av Manasses stam landet Basan, och den andra halvan av stammen hade fått land på västra sidan av Jordan. När Josua välsignade trupperna uppmanade han dem att dela med sig av sina rikedomar till sina släktingar där hemma. De hade nämligen fört med sig byte av boskap, silver, guld, koppar, järn och kläder.
9 Trupperna från Rubens och Gads stammar och ena halvan av Manasses stam lämnade Israels armé i Silo i Kanaan och gick över floden Jordan till sitt hemland Gilead.
10 Men innan de gick över till andra sidan av floden byggde de ett stort monument som alla kunde se, och det var utformat som ett altare.
11 Men när de övriga bland Israels stammar fick höra detta
12 drog de samman en armé i Silo och förberedde krig mot sina bröder.
13 Först skickade de emellertid iväg en delegation, som leddes av Pinehas, prästen Eleasars son. De gick över floden och började överläggningar med Ruben, Gad och Manasse.
14 I delegationen fanns tio högre tjänstemän från Israel, en från varje stam, och dessa var också huvudmän för sina familjer.
15 När de kommit in i Gileads land, sa de till Ruben, Gad och ena hälften av Manasses stam:
16 Hela Herrens församling vill veta varför ni syndar mot Gud och vänder er bort från honom genom att bygga ett altare.
17-18 Var det inte nog med att vi syndade vid Peor? Var inte denna synd, som vi ännu inte blivit helt renade från trots alla plågor, tillräckligt stor utan att ni nu ska behöva göra uppror mot Herren igen? Ni vet mycket väl, att om ni reser er upp mot Herren i dag, kommer han att straffa oss alla i morgon.
19 Om ni behöver ett altare därför att ert land är orenat, då kan ni komma över till vår sida av floden, där Herren bor bland oss i sitt tält, och då ska vi dela vårt land med er. Men sätt er inte upp mot Herren genom att bygga ett annat altare än det som redan finns rest till den sanne Guden!
20 Kommer ni inte ihåg, att när Akan, Seras son, syndade mot Herren, blev hela nationen straffad tillsammans med den man som hade syndat?
21-23 Vi svär inför Herren, himlens Gud, att vi inte har byggt detta altare för att sätta oss upp mot honom, svarade Rubens och Gads stammar och ena hälften av Manasses stam. Han vet, och låt också hela Israel få veta det, att vi inte rest detta altare för att offra brännoffer eller spisoffer eller tackoffer. Må Herrens förbannelse vila över oss, om vi hade gjort det.
24-25 Vi har rest altaret därför att vi älskar Herren och därför att vi är rädda för att era barn i framtiden ska säga till våra barn: 'Vilken rätt har ni att tillbe Herren, Israels Gud, eftersom Herren har låtit Jordan bli en gräns mellan oss! Ni har ingen del i Herren!' Era barn kanske får våra barn att sluta tillbe Herren.
26-27 Därför beslöt vi att bygga altaret, inte som en offerplats, utan som ett tecken för att visa våra barn och era barn att vi också tillber Herren. På så sätt ska inte era barn ha någon anledning att säga till våra barn: 'Ni har inte någon rätt att tillbe Herren'.
28 Om de skulle säga detta, kan våra barn svara: 'Se på altaret som våra förfäder byggde med Herrens altare som förebild. Det är inte avsett för brännoffer eller tackoffer utan står som ett tecken på den gemenskap som både ni och vi har med Herren.'
29 Vi skulle verkligen inte komma på tanken att vilja vända oss bort från Herren eller att göra uppror mot honom genom att bygga vårt eget altare för brännoffer, spisoffer eller slaktoffer. Det är bara altaret framför tältet som ska användas till detta.
30 När prästen Pinehas och de höga tjänstemännen hörde detta från Rubens, Gads och Manasses stammar, blev de mycket glada.
31 Pinehas svarade dem: I dag vet vi att Herren är mitt ibland oss, eftersom ni inte har syndat mot Herren som vi trodde. I stället har ni frälst oss från undergång!
32 Sedan gick Pinehas och de andra sändebuden tillbaka till de övriga israeliterna och talade om vad som hade hänt.
33 Och alla blev glada och prisade Gud, och sedan talade man inte längre om att börja krig mot Ruben och Gad.
34 Rubens och Gads folk gav altaret namnet Vittnesbördets altare, för de sa: Det är ett vittnesbörd mellan oss och dem, att Herren också är vår Gud.

Eastern Tribes Return Home
22 Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh 2 and said to them, “You have done all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded,(A) and you have obeyed me in everything I commanded. 3 For a long time now—to this very day—you have not deserted your fellow Israelites but have carried out the mission the Lord your God gave you. 4 Now that the Lord your God has given them rest(B) as he promised, return to your homes(C) in the land that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan.(D) 5 But be very careful to keep the commandment(E) and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you: to love the Lord(F) your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands,(G) to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.(H)”
6 Then Joshua blessed(I) them and sent them away, and they went to their homes. 7 (To the half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given land in Bashan,(J) and to the other half of the tribe Joshua gave land on the west side(K) of the Jordan along with their fellow Israelites.) When Joshua sent them home, he blessed them,(L) 8 saying, “Return to your homes with your great wealth—with large herds of livestock,(M) with silver, gold, bronze and iron,(N) and a great quantity of clothing—and divide(O) the plunder(P) from your enemies with your fellow Israelites.”
9 So the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh left the Israelites at Shiloh(Q) in Canaan to return to Gilead,(R) their own land, which they had acquired in accordance with the command of the Lord through Moses.
10 When they came to Geliloth(S) near the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an imposing altar(T) there by the Jordan. 11 And when the Israelites heard that they had built the altar on the border of Canaan at Geliloth near the Jordan on the Israelite side, 12 the whole assembly of Israel gathered at Shiloh(U) to go to war against them.
13 So the Israelites sent Phinehas(V) son of Eleazar,(W) the priest, to the land of Gilead—to Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh. 14 With him they sent ten of the chief men, one from each of the tribes of Israel, each the head of a family division among the Israelite clans.(X)
15 When they went to Gilead—to Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh—they said to them: 16 “The whole assembly of the Lord says: ‘How could you break faith(Y) with the God of Israel like this? How could you turn away from the Lord and build yourselves an altar in rebellion(Z) against him now? 17 Was not the sin of Peor(AA) enough for us? Up to this very day we have not cleansed ourselves from that sin, even though a plague fell on the community of the Lord! 18 And are you now turning away from the Lord?
“‘If you rebel against the Lord today, tomorrow he will be angry with the whole community(AB) of Israel. 19 If the land you possess is defiled, come over to the Lord’s land, where the Lord’s tabernacle(AC) stands, and share the land with us. But do not rebel against the Lord or against us by building an altar(AD) for yourselves, other than the altar of the Lord our God. 20 When Achan son of Zerah was unfaithful in regard to the devoted things,[a](AE) did not wrath(AF) come on the whole community(AG) of Israel? He was not the only one who died for his sin.’”(AH)
21 Then Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh replied to the heads of the clans of Israel: 22 “The Mighty One, God, the Lord! The Mighty One, God,(AI) the Lord!(AJ) He knows!(AK) And let Israel know! If this has been in rebellion or disobedience to the Lord, do not spare us this day. 23 If we have built our own altar to turn away from the Lord and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings,(AL) or to sacrifice fellowship offerings on it, may the Lord himself call us to account.(AM)
24 “No! We did it for fear that some day your descendants might say to ours, ‘What do you have to do with the Lord, the God of Israel? 25 The Lord has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you—you Reubenites and Gadites! You have no share in the Lord.’ So your descendants might cause ours to stop fearing the Lord.
26 “That is why we said, ‘Let us get ready and build an altar—but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.’ 27 On the contrary, it is to be a witness(AN) between us and you and the generations that follow, that we will worship the Lord at his sanctuary with our burnt offerings, sacrifices and fellowship offerings.(AO) Then in the future your descendants will not be able to say to ours, ‘You have no share in the Lord.’
28 “And we said, ‘If they ever say this to us, or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the replica of the Lord’s altar, which our ancestors built, not for burnt offerings and sacrifices, but as a witness(AP) between us and you.’
29 “Far be it from us to rebel(AQ) against the Lord and turn away from him today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings and sacrifices, other than the altar of the Lord our God that stands before his tabernacle.(AR)”
30 When Phinehas the priest and the leaders of the community—the heads of the clans of the Israelites—heard what Reuben, Gad and Manasseh had to say, they were pleased. 31 And Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, said to Reuben, Gad and Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is with us,(AS) because you have not been unfaithful to the Lord in this matter. Now you have rescued the Israelites from the Lord’s hand.”
32 Then Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, and the leaders returned to Canaan from their meeting with the Reubenites and Gadites in Gilead and reported to the Israelites.(AT) 33 They were glad to hear the report and praised God.(AU) And they talked no more about going to war against them to devastate the country where the Reubenites and the Gadites lived.
34 And the Reubenites and the Gadites gave the altar this name: A Witness(AV) Between Us—that the Lord is God.

2 And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:
3 Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the Lord your God.
4 And now the Lord your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side Jordan.
5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
6 So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away: and they went unto their tents.
7 Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,
8 And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.
9 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
10 And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.
11 And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.
12 And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up to war against them.
13 And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,
14 And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.
15 And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying,
16 Thus saith the whole congregation of the Lord, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the Lord, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might rebel this day against the Lord?
17 Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we are not cleansed until this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the Lord,
18 But that ye must turn away this day from following the Lord? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to day against the Lord, that to morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.
19 Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the Lord, wherein the Lord's tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against the Lord, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the Lord our God.
20 Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.
21 Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,
22 The Lord God of gods, the Lord God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the Lord, (save us not this day,)
23 That we have built us an altar to turn from following the Lord, or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the Lord himself require it;
24 And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the Lord God of Israel?
25 For the Lord hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the Lord: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the Lord.
26 Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:
27 But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the Lord before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the Lord.
28 Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.
29 God forbid that we should rebel against the Lord, and turn this day from following the Lord, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the Lord our God that is before his tabernacle.
30 And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them.
31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the Lord is among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the Lord: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the Lord.
32 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.
33 And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.
34 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the Lord is God.
