Josua sänder spejare till Jeriko
2 (A) Josua, Nuns son, sände i hemlighet ut två spejare från Shittim och sade: ”Gå och undersök landet och särskilt Jeriko[a].” De gav sig i väg och kom in i ett hus där det bodde en prostituerad vid namn Rahab[b] och där lade de sig att vila. 2 Men det berättades för kungen i Jeriko: ”I natt har några israelitiska män kommit hit för att utforska landet.” 3 Då sände kungen i Jeriko bud till Rahab och sade: ”Lämna ut männen som kom till dig och tog in i ditt hus, de har kommit för att utforska hela landet.”
4 Men kvinnan tog de båda männen och gömde dem. Sedan sade hon: ”Ja, männen kom till mig, men jag visste inte varifrån de kom. 5 Och när porten skulle stängas i skymningen gick männen ut, och jag vet inte vart de tog vägen. Skynda er efter dem så får ni tag i dem.” 6 Men hon hade fört dem upp på taket och gömt dem under linstjälkar[c] som hon hade utbredda på taket. 7 Männen skyndade efter dem på vägen till Jordan mot vadställena. Och så snart förföljarna hade gett sig av, stängdes stadsporten.
8 Men innan spejarna hade lagt sig gick hon upp till dem på taket 9 (B) och sade: ”Jag vet att Herren har gett er det här landet. Vi har gripits av skräck för er, och landets alla invånare bävar för er. 10 (C) Vi har hört hur Herren lät Röda havets vatten torka bort framför er när ni drog ut ur Egypten, och vad ni gjorde med Sichon och Og, amoreernas båda kungar på andra sidan Jordan, hur ni vigde[d] dem åt förintelse. 11 (D) När vi hörde det försvann vårt mod och nu har ingen kraft att stå emot er, för Herren er Gud är Gud uppe i himlen och nere på jorden.
12 Lova mig därför med ed vid Herren: Eftersom jag har visat barmhärtighet mot er, så ska också ni visa barmhärtighet mot min fars hus. Ge mig ett säkert tecken på det. 13 Låt min far, min mor, mina bröder och mina systrar och alla som tillhör dem leva, och rädda våra liv[e] från döden.”
14 Männen sade till henne: ”Med vårt eget liv svarar vi för ert, bara ni inte förråder vårt ärende. När Herren ger oss landet ska vi visa nåd och trofasthet mot dig.”
15 Då släppte hon ner dem genom fönstret med ett rep. Hennes hus var en del av stadsmuren[f], så att hon bodde i själva muren. 16 Och hon sade till dem: ”Gå upp i bergen så att era förföljare inte träffar på er. Håll er gömda där i tre dagar tills era förföljare har kommit tillbaka. Sedan kan ni fortsätta er färd.” 17 Och männen sade till henne: ”Vi är fria från eden du tog av oss 18 ifall du inte, när vi kommer in i landet, binder det här röda snöret i fönstret där du släppte ner oss, och likaså ifall du inte har din far, din mor, dina bröder och alla som tillhör din fars hus samlade hemma hos dig. 19 Om någon går ut genom dörren till ditt hus ska hans blod komma över hans eget huvud[g], och vi är utan skuld. Men om någon bär hand på en av dem som är med dig inne i huset, ska dennes blod komma över vårt huvud. 20 Men om du förråder vårt ärende är vi fria från eden som du tog av oss.” 21 Hon svarade: ”Som ni har sagt ska det bli.” Så sände hon i väg dem, och de gav sig av. Och hon band det röda snöret i fönstret.
22 De gav sig i väg och gick upp i bergen[h] och stannade där i tre dagar tills deras förföljare hade vänt tillbaka. De hade sökt efter dem överallt längs vägen men inte funnit dem. 23 Sedan vände de båda männen tillbaka ner från bergen och gick över floden och kom till Josua, Nuns son. De berättade för honom allt som hade hänt dem. 24 Och de sade till Josua: ”Herren har gett hela landet i vår hand. Landets alla invånare bävar för oss.”

- 2:1 Jeriko En av världens äldsta städer, strategiskt belägen vid en oas ca 8 km väster om Jordan där den spärrade vägen till resten av landet. Kan ha rymt ett par tusen invånare inom murarna.
- 2:1 Rahab Betyder ”bred” (välkomnande). Nämns i Hebr 11:31 och Jak 2:25 som ett exempel på omvändelse. Kanske samma Rahab som var förmoder till Jesus (Matt 1:5).
- 2:6 linstjälkar De meterlånga stjälkarna soltorkades och användes till tyg.

Rahab Hides the Spies(A)
2 Now Joshua the son of Nun sent out two men (B)from [a]Acacia Grove to spy secretly, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.”
So they went, and (C)came to the house of a harlot named (D)Rahab, and [b]lodged there. 2 And (E)it was told the king of Jericho, saying, “Behold, men have come here tonight from the children of Israel to search out the country.”
3 So the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to search out all the country.”
4 (F)Then the woman took the two men and hid them. So she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. 5 And it happened as the gate was being shut, when it was dark, that the men went out. Where the men went I do not know; pursue them quickly, for you may overtake them.” 6 (But (G)she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order on the roof.) 7 Then the men pursued them by the road to the Jordan, to the fords. And as soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate.
8 Now before they lay down, she came up to them on the roof, 9 and said to the men: (H)“I know that the Lord has given you the land, that (I)the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land (J)are fainthearted because of you. 10 For we have heard how the Lord (K)dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and (L)what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you (M)utterly destroyed. 11 And as soon as we (N)heard these things, (O)our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for (P)the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath. 12 Now therefore, I beg you, (Q)swear to me by the Lord, since I have shown you kindness, that you also will show kindness to (R)my father’s house, and (S)give me [c]a true token, 13 and (T)spare my father, my mother, my brothers, my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.”
14 So the men answered her, “Our lives for yours, if none of you tell this business of ours. And it shall be, when the Lord has given us the land, that (U)we will deal kindly and truly with you.”
15 Then she (V)let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the city wall; she dwelt on the wall. 16 And she said to them, “Get to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you. Hide there three days, until the pursuers have returned. Afterward you may go your way.”
17 So the men said to her: “We will be (W)blameless[d] of this oath of yours which you have made us swear, 18 (X)unless, when we come into the land, you bind this line of scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, (Y)and unless you [e]bring your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household to your own home. 19 So it shall be that whoever goes outside the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we will be [f]guiltless. And whoever is with you in the house, (Z)his [g]blood shall be on our head if a hand is laid on him. 20 And if you tell this business of ours, then we will be [h]free from your oath which you made us swear.”
21 Then she said, “According to your words, so be it.” And she sent them away, and they departed. And she bound the scarlet cord in the window.
22 They departed and went to the mountain, and stayed there three days until the pursuers returned. The pursuers sought them all along the way, but did not find them. 23 So the two men returned, descended from the mountain, and crossed over; and they came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all that had befallen them. 24 And they said to Joshua, “Truly (AA)the Lord has delivered all the land into our hands, for indeed all the inhabitants of the country are fainthearted because of us.”

2 1 Joshua sendeth men to spy Jericho, whom Rahab hideth. 11 She confesseth the God of Israel. 12 She requireth a sign for her deliverance. 21 The spies return to Joshua with comfortable tidings.
1 Then Joshua the son of Nun sent out of [a]Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, and also Jericho, and they went, and (A)came into an [b]harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there.
2 Then report was made to the King of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men hither tonight, of the children of Israel, to spy out the country.
3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab saying, [c]Bring forth the men that are come to thee, and which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the land.
4 (But the woman had taken the two men, and hid them.) Therefore said she thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were.
5 And when they shut the gate in the dark, the men went out, whither the men went, I wot not: follow ye after them quickly, for ye shall overtake them.
6 (But she had brought them up to the [d]roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had spread abroad upon the roof.)
7 And certain men pursued after them, the way to Jordan, unto the fords, and as soon as they which pursued after them, were gone out, they shut the gate.
8 ¶ And before they were asleep, she came up unto them upon the roof,
9 And said unto the men, I know that the Lord hath given you the land, and that the [e]fear of you is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.
10 For we have heard how the Lord (B)dried up the water of the red Sea (C)before you when ye came out of Egypt, and what you did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, unto (D)Sihon and to Og, whom ye utterly destroyed:
11 And when we heard it, our hearts [f]did faint, and there remained no more [g]courage in any because of you: for [h]the Lord your God, he is the God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the Lord, that as I have showed you mercy, ye will also show mercy unto my father’s house, and give me a true token,
13 And that ye will save alive my father and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have: and that ye will deliver our [i]souls from death.
14 And the men answered her, [j]Our life for you to die, if ye utter not this our business: and when the Lord hath given us the land, we will deal mercifully and truly with thee.
15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.
16 And she said unto them, Go you into the [k]mountain, lest the pursuers meet with you, and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: then afterward may ye go your way.
17 And the men said unto her, [l]We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.
18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this cord of red thread in the window, whereby thou lettest us down, and thou shalt bring thy father and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household home to thee.
19 And whosoever then doth go out at the doors of thine house into the street, [m]his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: but whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand touch him:
20 And if thou utter this our [n]matter, we will be quit of thine oath, which thou hast made us swear.
21 And she answered, According unto your words, so be it: then she sent them away, and they departed, and she bound the [o]red cord in the window.
22 ¶ And they departed, and came into the mountain, and there abode three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.
23 So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed [p]over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that came unto them.
24 Also they said unto Joshua, Surely the Lord hath delivered into our hands all the land: for even all the inhabitants of the country faint because of us.
