Landet väster om Jordan delas upp

14 Detta är de områden som israeliterna fick som egendom i Kanaans land och som prästen Elasar, Josua och ledarna för de olika stammarna tilldelade dem 2 genom lottning som arvedel åt de nio och en halv stammarna, så som Herren hade befallt genom Mose.

3 Mose hade redan gett landområden åt de 2,5 stammarna på östra sidan Jordan. Åt leviterna gav han inget landområde bland dem. 4 Josefs stam hade blivit två separata stammar, nämligen Manasses och Efraims, och leviterna fick inte något land alls, förutom städerna som de skulle bo i och de kringliggande betesmarkerna för deras boskap. 5 Israeliterna delade landet, så som Herren hade befallt Mose.

6 Under ledning av kenisséen Kalev, Jefunnes son, kom en delegation från Judas stam till Josua i Gilgal. ”Du vet ju vad Herren sa till gudsmannen Mose om dig och mig när vi var vid Kadesh Barnea”, sa Kalev till Josua. 7 ”Då var jag fyrtio år och Mose Herrens tjänare hade sänt mig från Kadesh Barnea för att spionera på Kanaans land. Jag rapporterade vad jag ansåg vara sanning, 8 men våra bröder som var med oss skrämde folket så att de inte vågade gå in i landet. Eftersom jag hade följt Herren, min Gud, troget, 9 svor Mose då denna ed: ’Den del av landet som du just har besökt ska tillhöra dig och dina efterkommande för all framtid eftersom du varit Herren, min Gud, trogen.’

10 Som du ser har Herren låtit mig leva, som han lovade för de fyrtiofem år som gått sedan Herren gav Mose det löftet och medan Israel vandrade omkring i öknen, och idag är jag åttiofem år. 11 Jag är lika stark nu som jag var då Mose skickade oss ut på detta uppdrag och jag kan fortfarande strida lika bra. 12 Ge mig nu bergsbygden som Herren lovade mig! Du hörde själv talas om anakiterna som bor där i befästa städer, men om Herren är med mig, ska jag driva ut dem ur landet som han lovade.”

13 Josua välsignade då kenisséen Kalev, Jefunnes son, och gav honom Hebron som egendom, 14 därför att han hade troget följt Herren, Israels Gud, och därför är Hebron fortfarande hans egendom. 15 Tidigare hade Hebron kallats Kirjat-Arba efter en stor hjälte bland anakiterna.

I landet rådde sedan fred.

14 And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.

2 By lot was their inheritance, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe.

3 For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and an half tribe on the other side Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave none inheritance among them.

4 For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance.

5 As the Lord commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land.

6 Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the Lord said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadeshbarnea.

7 Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadeshbarnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart.

8 Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God.

9 And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children's for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the Lord my God.

10 And now, behold, the Lord hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.

12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.

13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance.

14 Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.

15 And the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.

14 Toda esta fue la herencia que recibieron los hijos de Israel en la tierra de Canaán. El reparto lo hicieron el sacerdote Eleazar, Josué hijo de Nun, y los jefes de las tribus israelitas. 2 La tierra fue sorteada entre las nueve tribus y media, tal y como el Señor se lo ordenó a Moisés.(A) 3 Antes de eso Moisés les había dado su parte de las tierras a las dos tribus y media, al otro lado del Jordán.(B) 4 Los hijos de José se dividieron en dos tribus, la de Manasés y la de Efraín, y a los levitas no se les dieron tierras. No tuvieron parte en la repartición, aunque sí recibieron ciudades en las cuales vivir, junto con ejidos para sus ganados y rebaños. 5 La tierra se repartió entre los hijos de Israel, tal y como el Señor se lo había ordenado a Moisés.

Caleb recibe Hebrón

6 Los hijos de Judá fueron a Gilgal para ver a Josué, y Caleb hijo de Yefune, el quenizita, le dijo:

«Tú bien sabes lo que el Señor le dijo a Moisés, el varón de Dios, en Cadés Barnea, en cuanto a nosotros.(C) 7 Cuando Moisés, el siervo del Señor, me envió a reconocer la tierra, yo tenía cuarenta años; y a mi regreso le di las noticias, según mi sentir.(D) 8 También sabes que los hermanos que me acompañaron desanimaron al pueblo, pero yo me mantuve fiel al Señor mi Dios. 9 Ese día Moisés hizo este juramento: “La tierra donde has puesto el pie será tuya. Será la herencia perpetua de tus hijos, por cuanto seguiste con fidelidad al Señor mi Dios.”(E) 10 El Señor me ha dado cuarenta y cinco años más de vida, tal y como él se lo dijo a Moisés cuando Israel andaba por el desierto. Así que ahora tengo ochenta y cinco años, 11 pero aún me siento tan fuerte como el día en que Moisés me envió a reconocer la tierra. Tengo fuerzas para pelear, y para salir y entrar. 12 Por lo tanto, te pido que me des este monte, del cual habló el Señor aquel día. Tú eres testigo. Aquí viven los anaquitas, y tienen grandes ciudades fortificadas; pero con la ayuda del Señor puedo vencerlos y echarlos de estas tierras.»

13 Entonces Josué bendijo a Caleb hijo de Yefune, el quenizita, y como herencia le dio Hebrón. 14 Hasta el día de hoy es su herencia, porque siguió fielmente al Señor, Dios de Israel. 15 Antes, Hebrón se llamaba Quiriat Arbá,[a] porque Arba fue un hombre importante entre los anaquitas. Después de eso, hubo paz en la tierra.

Division of the Land West of the Jordan

14 Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance(A) in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar(B) the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel(C) allotted(D) to them.(E) 2 Their inheritances were assigned by lot(F) to the nine and a half tribes,(G) as the Lord had commanded through Moses. 3 Moses had granted the two and a half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan(H) but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest,(I) 4 for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim.(J) The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.(K) 5 So the Israelites divided the land, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.(L)

Allotment for Caleb

6 Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal,(M) and Caleb son of Jephunneh(N) the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God(O) at Kadesh Barnea(P) about you and me.(Q) 7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea(R) to explore the land.(S) And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,(T) 8 but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear.(U) I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.(V) 9 So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance(W) and that of your children(X) forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.’[a]

10 “Now then, just as the Lord promised,(Y) he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved(Z) about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!(AA) 11 I am still as strong(AB) today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous(AC) to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day.(AD) You yourself heard then that the Anakites(AE) were there and their cities were large and fortified,(AF) but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”

13 Then Joshua blessed(AG) Caleb son of Jephunneh(AH) and gave him Hebron(AI) as his inheritance.(AJ) 14 So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.(AK) 15 (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba(AL) after Arba,(AM) who was the greatest man among the Anakites.)

Then the land had rest(AN) from war.
