Die Amoriter wollen Gibeon bestrafen
10 Wie ein Lauffeuer verbreitete sich die Nachricht von der Eroberung und Zerstörung Ais. Auch Adoni-Zedek, der König von Jerusalem, erfuhr, dass die Stadt Ai und ihr König dasselbe Schicksal erlitten hatten wie Jericho. Man berichtete ihm, die Einwohner Gibeons hätten mit den Israeliten Frieden geschlossen und lebten nun in ihrem Gebiet. 2 Diese Neuigkeiten lösten große Angst aus. Denn Gibeon war eine bedeutende Stadt, so wie die anderen Königsstädte. Sie war noch größer als Ai und verfügte über ein starkes Heer.
3 Da sandte Adoni-Zedek Boten von Jerusalem zu den benachbarten Amoriterkönigen Hoham von Hebron, Piram von Jarmut, Jafia von Lachisch und Debir von Eglon. Er ließ ihnen sagen: 4 »Die Leute von Gibeon haben mit Israel Frieden geschlossen. Kommt und helft mir, sie anzugreifen!« 5 Die vier Könige folgten der Aufforderung und schlossen sich mit ihren Truppen dem Heer Adoni-Zedeks an. Sie zogen nach Gibeon, belagerten die Stadt und erklärten ihr den Krieg.
6 Die Einwohner Gibeons schickten sofort Boten zu Josua in das Lager bei Gilgal. »Wir flehen dich an«, sagten sie zu ihm, »lass uns nicht im Stich! Komm schnell und hilf uns! Alle Amoriterkönige aus dem Bergland haben sich gegen uns verschworen. Ihre Heere belagern unsere Stadt!«
7 Da brach Josua mit seinem ganzen Heer auf. 8 Der Herr sprach zu Josua: »Hab keine Angst vor ihnen! Ich gebe sie in deine Gewalt. Keiner von ihnen kann dir standhalten.«
Israel besiegt die Amoriter
9 Josua führte seine Truppen noch in der Nacht von Gilgal nach Gibeon. Die Gegner waren von ihrem Angriff völlig überrascht. 10 Der Herr ließ unter den Amoritern heillose Verwirrung ausbrechen, und so konnten die Israeliten ihnen bei Gibeon eine schwere Niederlage zufügen. Sie verfolgten die zurückweichenden Truppen entlang dem Weg, der zum Pass von Bet-Horon hinaufführt, und weiter bis Aseka und Makkeda. 11 Als die Fliehenden Bet-Horon erreichten und von dort ins Tal hinabstiegen, ließ der Herr sie durch ein schweres Hagelunwetter erschlagen. Die Hagelkörner waren so groß wie Kieselsteine und töteten mehr Menschen als die Schwerter der Israeliten.
12 An jenem Tag, als der Herr die Amoriter in die Gewalt der Israeliten gab, hatte Josua laut zum Herrn gebetet. Vor dem ganzen Volk hatte er gerufen: »Sonne, bleib stehen über Gibeon, und Mond über dem Tal Ajalon!«
13 Da waren die Sonne und der Mond stehen geblieben, bis die Israeliten sich an ihren Feinden gerächt hatten.
Dieses Ereignis wird auch im »Buch des Rechtschaffenen« beschrieben. Die Sonne stand fast einen Tag lang hoch am Himmel und lief nicht nach Westen. 14 Weder vorher noch nachher hat es je einen Tag gegeben, an dem der Herr so etwas auf die Bitte eines Menschen hin getan hätte. Damals aber tat er es, denn er kämpfte auf der Seite Israels.
15 Schließlich kehrte Josua mit dem ganzen Heer ins Lager bei Gilgal zurück.
Das Ende der fünf Amoriterkönige
16 Den fünf Amoriterkönigen aber war die Flucht gelungen. Sie versteckten sich in einer Höhle in der Nähe der Stadt Makkeda. 17 Es dauerte nicht lange, da wurde Josua gemeldet, dass man sie entdeckt hatte. 18 Er befahl den Israeliten: »Wälzt große Felsbrocken vor den Eingang der Höhle und sichert ihn mit einigen Wachposten. 19 Ihr Übrigen aber sollt nicht dortbleiben. Jagt wieder euren Feinden nach und versucht, ihre Nachhut zu schlagen! Lasst sie nicht in ihre Städte entkommen! Denn der Herr, euer Gott, gibt sie in eure Hand.«
20 Die Israeliten brachten den Amoritern an jenem Tag eine vernichtende Niederlage bei. Ihre Heere waren vollständig besiegt. Nur wenige Überlebende konnten sich in die befestigten Städte retten. 21 Nach der Schlacht kehrten die israelitischen Soldaten ungehindert zu Josua ins Lager von Makkeda zurück. Kein Feind wagte sich mehr an sie heran.
22 Josua befahl: »Öffnet den Eingang der Höhle! Holt die fünf Könige heraus und bringt sie zu mir!« 23 Man wälzte die Steine beiseite und holte die fünf aus ihrem Versteck: die Könige von Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmut, Lachisch und Eglon. 24 Sie wurden zu Josua gebracht. Der rief alle Israeliten zusammen und forderte seine Heerführer auf: »Kommt her! Setzt diesen Königen den Fuß auf den Nacken!« Sie gehorchten.
25 Dann rief Josua ihnen zu: »Ihr braucht euch vor niemandem zu fürchten; lasst euch nicht einschüchtern! Seid mutig und entschlossen! Denn jetzt seht ihr, was der Herr mit allen Feinden machen wird, gegen die ihr kämpft!«
26 Darauf tötete Josua die Könige und ließ ihre Leichen an fünf Bäumen aufhängen. Dort blieben sie bis zum Abend. 27 Als die Sonne unterging, befahl er, sie herabzunehmen und in die Höhle zu werfen, in der sie sich versteckt hatten. Der Eingang wurde mit großen Steinen verschlossen, die noch heute dort liegen.
Israel erobert das südliche Kanaan
28 Am selben Tag eroberte Josua die Stadt Makkeda. Er vollstreckte Gottes Urteil an ihrem König und an allen Einwohnern, indem er sie mit dem Schwert umbringen ließ. Niemand entkam. Der König von Makkeda fand das gleiche Ende wie der König von Jericho.
29 Dann führte Josua das israelitische Heer nach Libna und griff auch diese Stadt an. 30 Wieder verhalf der Herr den Israeliten zum Sieg. Alle Einwohner wurden getötet, niemand konnte fliehen. Der König von Libna fand das gleiche Ende wie der König von Jericho.
31 Von Libna zog Josua mit dem Heer nach Lachisch. Er belagerte die Stadt und griff an. 32 Am zweiten Tag schenkte der Herr ihm den Sieg. Josua eroberte die Stadt und ließ, wie schon in Libna, alle Einwohner umbringen. 33 Horam, der König von Geser, war Lachisch mit seinem Heer zu Hilfe geeilt. Doch Josua vernichtete auch ihn und seine Truppen, kein Soldat überlebte.
34 Von Lachisch führte Josua das israelitische Heer weiter nach Eglon. Er ließ die Stadt umzingeln und angreifen. 35 Noch am selben Tag eroberte er sie und vollstreckte Gottes Urteil an allen Einwohnern. Wie zuvor in Lachisch ließ er niemanden am Leben.
36 Dann zogen die Israeliten weiter nach Hebron. Sie eröffneten den Kampf gegen die Stadt 37 und nahmen sie ein. Wie in Eglon töteten sie den König und alle Einwohner mit dem Schwert, ohne einen einzigen entkommen zu lassen. Auch die Städte, die zu Hebron gehörten, wurden vernichtet.
38 Darauf wandten sich die Israeliten nach Debir, griffen es an 39 und bemächtigten sich der Stadt, ihres Königs und der umliegenden Orte. Alle Menschen dort wurden mit dem Schwert getötet. Wieder gab es kein Entrinnen. Debir traf das gleiche Schicksal wie Hebron und Libna.
40 Josua besiegte alle Könige des südlichen Kanaan und eroberte ihr ganzes Land: die Berge im Landesinnern, die Wüste Negev im Süden, das Hügelland im Westen und die Gebirgsausläufer im Osten. Niemand, der dort lebte, entging dem Gericht Gottes; Josua ließ sämtliche Bewohner töten, so wie es der Herr, der Gott Israels, angeordnet hatte.
41 Das eingenommene Gebiet erstreckte sich von Kadesch-Barnea bis Gaza und von Goschen[a] bis Gibeon. 42 Alle Königreiche dort eroberte Josua in einem einzigen Feldzug, denn der Herr kämpfte auf Israels Seite.
43 Schließlich kehrte Josua mit dem ganzen Heer ins Lager bei Gilgal zurück.

The Sun Stands Still
10 Now Adoni-Zedek(A) king of Jerusalem(B) heard that Joshua had taken Ai(C) and totally destroyed[a](D) it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon(E) had made a treaty of peace(F) with Israel and had become their allies. 2 He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters. 3 So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron,(G) Piram king of Jarmuth,(H) Japhia king of Lachish(I) and Debir(J) king of Eglon.(K) 4 “Come up and help me attack Gibeon,” he said, “because it has made peace(L) with Joshua and the Israelites.”
5 Then the five kings(M) of the Amorites(N)—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon—joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it.
6 The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal:(O) “Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.”
7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army,(P) including all the best fighting men. 8 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid(Q) of them; I have given them into your hand.(R) Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”(S)
9 After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. 10 The Lord threw them into confusion(T) before Israel,(U) so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon.(V) Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon(W) and cut them down all the way to Azekah(X) and Makkedah.(Y) 11 As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the Lord hurled large hailstones(Z) down on them,(AA) and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.
12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites(AB) over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:
“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.(AC)”
13 So the sun stood still,(AD)
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on[b] its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of Jashar.(AE)
The sun stopped(AF) in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting(AG) for Israel!
15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(AH)
Five Amorite Kings Killed
16 Now the five kings had fled(AI) and hidden in the cave at Makkedah. 17 When Joshua was told that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah, 18 he said, “Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave, and post some men there to guard it. 19 But don’t stop; pursue your enemies! Attack them from the rear and don’t let them reach their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.”
20 So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely,(AJ) but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities.(AK) 21 The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a word against the Israelites.
22 Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.” 23 So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. 24 When they had brought these kings(AL) to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, “Come here and put your feet(AM) on the necks of these kings.” So they came forward and placed their feet(AN) on their necks.
25 Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous.(AO) This is what the Lord will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.” 26 Then Joshua put the kings to death and exposed their bodies on five poles, and they were left hanging on the poles until evening.
27 At sunset(AP) Joshua gave the order and they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where they had been hiding. At the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks, which are there to this day.(AQ)
Southern Cities Conquered
28 That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors.(AR) And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.(AS)
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah(AT) and attacked it. 30 The Lord also gave that city and its king into Israel’s hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish;(AU) he took up positions against it and attacked it. 32 The Lord gave Lachish into Israel’s hands, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. 33 Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer(AV) had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left.
34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon;(AW) they took up positions against it and attacked it. 35 They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish.
36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron(AX) and attacked it. 37 They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone(AY) in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it.
38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir.(AZ) 39 They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron.(BA)
40 So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev,(BB) the western foothills and the mountain slopes,(BC) together with all their kings.(BD) He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.(BE) 41 Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea(BF) to Gaza(BG) and from the whole region of Goshen(BH) to Gibeon. 42 All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought(BI) for Israel.
43 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(BJ)

10 As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction,[a] (A)doing to Ai and its king (B)as he had done to Jericho and its king, and (C)how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, 2 (D)he[b] feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were warriors. 3 So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, 4 “Come up to me and help me, and let us strike Gibeon. For (E)it has made peace with Joshua and with the people of Israel.” 5 Then the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, (F)gathered their forces and went up with all their armies and encamped against Gibeon and made war against it.
6 And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua (G)at the camp in Gilgal, saying, “Do not relax your hand from your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country are gathered against us.” 7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and (H)all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. 8 And the Lord said to Joshua, (I)“Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands. (J)Not a man of them shall stand before you.” 9 So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all night from Gilgal. 10 (K)And the Lord threw them into a panic before Israel, who[c] struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and chased them by the way of (L)the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. 11 And as they fled before Israel, while they were (M)going down the ascent of Beth-horon, (N)the Lord threw down large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died because of the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword.
12 At that time Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel,
(O)“Sun, stand still at Gibeon,
and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.”
13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped,
until the nation took vengeance on their enemies.
Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day. 14 (P)There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for (Q)the Lord fought for Israel.
15 So (R)Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
Five Amorite Kings Executed
16 These five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at (S)Makkedah. 17 And it was told to Joshua, “The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.” 18 And Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave and set men by it to guard them, 19 but do not stay there yourselves. Pursue your enemies; (T)attack their rear guard. Do not let them enter their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.” 20 When Joshua and the sons of Israel had finished striking them with a great blow (U)until they were wiped out, and when the remnant that remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, 21 then all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah. (V)Not a man moved his tongue against any of the people of Israel.
22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me from the cave.” 23 And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 24 And when they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, “Come near; put your feet on the necks of these kings.” Then they came near and put their feet on their necks. 25 And Joshua said to them, (W)“Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous. (X)For thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.” 26 And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees. And (Y)they hung on the trees until evening. 27 But at the time of the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and (Z)they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.
28 As for (AA)Makkedah, Joshua captured it on that day and struck it, and its king, with the edge of the sword. He devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah (AB)just as he had done to the king of Jericho.
Conquest of Southern Canaan
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to (AC)Libnah and fought against Libnah. 30 And the Lord gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel. And he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left none remaining in it. And he did to its king (AD)as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Libnah to (AE)Lachish and laid siege to it and fought against it. 32 And the Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah.
33 Then Horam king of (AF)Gezer came up to help Lachish. And Joshua struck him and his people, until he left none remaining.
34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lachish to (AG)Eglon. And they laid siege to it and fought against it. 35 And they captured it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword. And he devoted every person in it to destruction that day, as he had done to Lachish.
36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to (AH)Hebron. And they fought against it 37 and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it. He left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and devoted it to destruction and every person in it.
38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned back to (AI)Debir and fought against it 39 and he captured it with its king and all its towns. And they struck them with the edge of the sword and devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. Just as he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and to its king.
40 So Joshua struck the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland (AJ)and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, (AK)but devoted to destruction all that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel commanded. 41 And Joshua struck them from (AL)Kadesh-barnea as far as Gaza, and all the country of (AM)Goshen, as far as Gibeon. 42 And Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, (AN)because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. 43 (AO)Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

7 So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.
8 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.
9 Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night.
10 And the Lord discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.
11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.
12 Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.
13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the Lord fought for Israel.
15 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
16 But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.
17 And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.
18 And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:
19 And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the Lord your God hath delivered them into your hand.
20 And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities.
21 And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
22 Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.
23 And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
24 And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.
26 And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.
27 And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave's mouth, which remain until this very day.
28 And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.
29 Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:
30 And the Lord delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.
31 And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:
32 And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.
33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.
34 And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:
35 And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
36 And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:
37 And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.
38 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:
39 And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.
40 So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel commanded.
41 And Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.
42 And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.
43 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
