Solen står stilla
10 När Adoni-Sedek, kungen i Jerusalem, hörde att Josua hade besegrat Ai och dödat kungen där, på samma sätt som han hade gjort i Jeriko, och hur invånarna i Gibeon hade lyckats få ett fredsfördrag med Israel och blivit dess allierade,
2 blev han fruktansvärt rädd. Gibeon var nämligen en stor stad, lika stor som någon av kungastäderna och mycket större än Ai, och dess män var kända för att vara verkliga krigare.
3 Adoni-Sedek skickade därför ett meddelande till kung Hoham i Hebron, kung Piram i Jarmut, kung Jafia i Lakis och kung Debir i Eglon.
4 Kom och hjälp mig att besegra gibeoniterna, skrev han. De har slutit fred med Josua och Israels folk.
5 Dessa fem amoreiska kungar slog alltså samman sina arméer och anföll gemensamt Gibeon.
6 Då sände männen i Gibeon omedelbart bud till Josua i Gilgal. Kom och hjälp dina tjänare! bad de. Skynda er! Alla amoreiska kungar som bor i bergsbygderna anfaller oss gemensamt med sina arméer.
7 Josua och israeliternas armé lämnade då Gilgal för att undsätta Gibeon.
8 Var inte rädd för dem, sa Herren till Josua. De är redan besegrade! Inte en enda av dem ska kunna stå emot dig.
9 Josua och armén marscherade hela natten och överrumplade fienden.
10 Herren lät det bli panik bland dem när de fick se israeliterna. De blev fullständigt besegrade, och israeliterna förföljde de överlevande ända bort till Bet-Horon, Aseka och Mackeda och dödade många av dem.
11 Och när de under sin flykt undan israeliterna rusade nerför sluttningen mot Bet-Horon, lät Herren en fruktansvärd hagelstorm komma över dem, och den följde dem hela vägen fram till Aseka. Fler blev dödade av hagel än av israeliternas svärd.
12 Medan israeliterna förföljde fienden bad Josua högt: Låt solen stå stilla över Gibeon och låt månen stå kvar i Ajalons dal!
13 Och solen och månen flyttade sig inte förrän Israels armé hade slagit fiendehärarna! Detta finns närmare skildrat i Den redliges bok. Solen stod kvar uppe på himlen nästan ett helt dygn!
14 Det har aldrig tidigare och inte heller senare hänt att Herren har hindrat solen att gå ner som svar på en mans bön. Det var Herren som stred för Israel den dagen.
15 Senare återvände Josua och israeliternas armé till Gilgal.
Fem kungar avrättas
16 Under striden flydde de fem kungarna och gömde sig i en grotta vid Mackeda.
17 När Josua nåddes av nyheten att man funnit kungarna
18 befallde han att en stor sten skulle rullas framför grottans ingång och att vakter skulle sättas dit, så att kungarna inte skulle kunna fly.
19 De övriga soldaterna fick följande order: Förfölj fienden och angrip dem bakifrån! Låt dem inte komma tillbaka till sina städer, för Herren ska hjälpa er att fullständigt förgöra dem.
20 Josua och Israels armé fortsatte att meja ner fienden och gjorde slut på de fem arméerna med undantag av det fåtal som lyckades komma tillbaka till sina befästa städer.
21 Då återvände alla israeliterna till sitt läger vid Mackeda, och efter detta vågade ingen längre anfalla Israel.
22-23 Josua gav nu sina män befallning om att flytta bort stenen från grottans öppning och föra ut de fem kungarna från Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmut, Lakis och Eglon.
24 Sedan sammankallade han hela armén och gav befälhavarna för armén order att sätta sina fötter på kungarnas nackar.
25 Var inte rädda, och tappa inte modet, sa Josua till sina män. Var bara starka och frimodiga, för så här kommer Herren att göra med alla era fiender.
26 Med de orden stack Josua sitt svärd i de fem kungarna och hängde upp deras döda kroppar på fem pålar, där de fick hänga tills det blev kväll.
27 Vid solnedgången gav Josua befallning om att kropparna skulle tas ner och kastas in i grottan där kungarna hade gömt sig. Framför grottan kastade man upp ett stort stenröse, som fortfarande finns kvar.
Israel utplånar städer i söder
28 Samma dag utplånade Josua staden Mackeda och dödade kungen och alla andra som bodde där, och inte en människa i hela staden kom undan med livet.
29 Därefter tågade israeliterna mot Libna.
30 Herren gav dem också den staden och dess kung, och alla dödades, precis som i Jeriko.
31 Från Libna fortsatte de till Lakis och anföll staden.
32 Herren gav också Lakis i Israels hand, så att de intog staden på andra dagen, och här gick det för invånarna på samma sätt som i Libna.
33 Under anfallet mot Lakis hade kung Horam från Geser kommit för att försöka hjälpa till att försvara staden, men Josuas män dödade också honom och slog hela hans armé.
34-35 Den israelitiska armén drog sedan vidare till Eglon och intog det redan första dagen, och alldeles som i Lakis dödade de alla invånarna.
36 Sedan lämnade de Eglon, fortsatte till Hebron,
37 intog det och alla dess förstäder och dödade hela befolkningen.
38 Därefter återvände de till Debir
39 och intog det såväl som de kringliggande byarna, och allt folk dödades, precis som i Libna.
40 På så sätt besegrade Josua och hans armé hela landet, folken och kungarna i bergsbygden, på syd- och låglandet och på bergssluttningarna. De dödade alla i hela landet, precis som Herren, Israels Gud, hade gett befallning om,
41 alla från Kades- Barnea till Gasa, och från Gosen ända till Gibeon.
42 Allt detta genomfördes i en följd, och Herren, Israels Gud, stred för sitt folk.
43 Sedan återvände Josua och hans armé till lägret vid Gilgal.

10 Now it came to pass when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem (A)heard how Joshua had taken (B)Ai and had utterly destroyed it—(C)as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to (D)Ai and its king—and (E)how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, 2 that they (F)feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty. 3 Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying, 4 “Come up to me and help me, that we may attack Gibeon, for (G)it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.” 5 Therefore the five kings of the (H)Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, (I)gathered together and went up, they and all their armies, and camped before Gibeon and made war against it.
6 And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp (J)at Gilgal, saying, “Do not forsake your servants; come up to us quickly, save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the mountains have gathered together against us.”
7 So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he and (K)all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. 8 And the Lord said to Joshua, (L)“Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hand; (M)not a man of them shall (N)stand before you.” 9 Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly, having marched all night from Gilgal. 10 So the Lord (O)routed them before Israel, killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, chased them along the road that goes (P)to Beth Horon, and struck them down as far as (Q)Azekah and Makkedah. 11 And it happened, as they fled before Israel and were on the descent of Beth Horon, (R)that the Lord cast down large hailstones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than the children of Israel killed with the sword.
12 Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel:
(S)“Sun, stand still over Gibeon;
And Moon, in the Valley of (T)Aijalon.”
13 So the sun stood still,
And the moon stopped,
Till the people had revenge
Upon their enemies.
(U)Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. 14 And there has been (V)no day like that, before it or after it, that the Lord heeded the voice of a man; for (W)the Lord fought for Israel.
15 (X)Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
The Amorite Kings Executed
16 But these five kings had fled and hidden themselves in a cave at Makkedah. 17 And it was told Joshua, saying, “The five kings have been found hidden in the cave at Makkedah.”
18 So Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them. 19 And do not stay there yourselves, but pursue your enemies, and attack their rear guard. Do not allow them to enter their cities, for the Lord your God has delivered them into your hand.” 20 Then it happened, while Joshua and the children of Israel made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they had finished, that those who escaped entered fortified cities. 21 And all the people returned to the camp, to Joshua at Makkedah, in peace.
(Y)No one [a]moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings to me from the cave.” 23 And they did so, and brought out those five kings to him from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
24 So it was, when they brought out those kings to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the captains of the men of war who went with him, “Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings.” And they drew near and (Z)put their feet on their necks. 25 Then Joshua said to [b]them, (AA)“Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage, for (AB)thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.” 26 And afterward Joshua struck [c]them and killed them, and hanged them on five trees; and they (AC)were hanging on the trees until evening. 27 So it was at the time of the going down of the sun that Joshua commanded, and they (AD)took them down from the trees, cast them into the cave where they had been hidden, and laid large stones against the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.
Conquest of the Southland
28 On that day Joshua took Makkedah, and struck it and its king with the edge of the sword. He utterly (AE)destroyed [d]them—all the people who were in it. He let none remain. He also did to the king of Makkedah (AF)as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29 Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to (AG)Libnah; and they fought against Libnah. 30 And the Lord also delivered it and its king into the hand of Israel; he struck it and all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword. He let none remain in it, but did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish; and they encamped against it and fought against it. 32 And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, who took it on the second day, and struck it and all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword, according to all that he had done to Libnah. 33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, until he left him none remaining.
34 From Lachish Joshua passed to Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it and fought against it. 35 They took it on that day and struck it with the edge of the sword; all the people who were in it he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
36 So Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, to (AH)Hebron; and they fought against it. 37 And they took it and struck it with the edge of the sword—its king, all its cities, and all the people who were in it; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon, but utterly destroyed it and all the people who were in it.
38 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to (AI)Debir; and they fought against it. 39 And he took it and its king and all its cities; they struck them with the edge of the sword and utterly destroyed all the people who were in it. He left none remaining; as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and its king, as he had done also to Libnah and its king.
40 So Joshua conquered all the land: the (AJ)mountain country and the [e]South and the lowland and the wilderness slopes, and (AK)all their kings; he left none remaining, but (AL)utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded. 41 And Joshua conquered them from (AM)Kadesh Barnea as far as (AN)Gaza, (AO)and all the country of Goshen, even as far as Gibeon. 42 All these kings and their land Joshua took at one time, (AP)because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. 43 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

10 As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction,[a] (A)doing to Ai and its king (B)as he had done to Jericho and its king, and (C)how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, 2 (D)he[b] feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were warriors. 3 So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, 4 “Come up to me and help me, and let us strike Gibeon. For (E)it has made peace with Joshua and with the people of Israel.” 5 Then the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, (F)gathered their forces and went up with all their armies and encamped against Gibeon and made war against it.

Come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country are gathered against us.” 7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and (H)all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. 8 And the Lord said to Joshua, (I)“Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands. (J)Not a man of them shall stand before you.” 9 So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all night from Gilgal. 10 (K)And the Lord threw them into a panic before Israel, who[c] struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and chased them by the way of (L)the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. 11 And as they fled before Israel, while they were (M)going down the ascent of Beth-horon, (N)the Lord threw down large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died because of the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword.
12 At that time Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel,
(O)“Sun, stand still at Gibeon,
and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.”
13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped,
until the nation took vengeance on their enemies.
Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day. 14 (P)There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for (Q)the Lord fought for Israel.
15 So (R)Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
Five Amorite Kings Executed
16 These five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at (S)Makkedah. 17 And it was told to Joshua, “The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.” 18 And Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave and set men by it to guard them, 19 but do not stay there yourselves. Pursue your enemies; (T)attack their rear guard. Do not let them enter their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.” 20 When Joshua and the sons of Israel had finished striking them with a great blow (U)until they were wiped out, and when the remnant that remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, 21 then all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah. (V)Not a man moved his tongue against any of the people of Israel.
22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me from the cave.” 23 And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 24 And when they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, “Come near; put your feet on the necks of these kings.” Then they came near and put their feet on their necks. 25 And Joshua said to them, (W)“Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous. (X)For thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.” 26 And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees. 28 As for (AA)Makkedah, Joshua captured it on that day and struck it, and its king, with the edge of the sword. He devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah (AB)just as he had done to the king of Jericho.
Conquest of Southern Canaan
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to (AC)Libnah and fought against Libnah. 30 And the Lord gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel. And he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left none remaining in it. And he did to its king (AD)as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Libnah to (AE)Lachish and laid siege to it and fought against it. 32 And the Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah.
33 Then Horam king of (AF)Gezer came up to help Lachish. And Joshua struck him and his people, until he left none remaining.
34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lachish to (AG)Eglon. And they laid siege to it and fought against it. 35 And they captured it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword. And he devoted every person in it to destruction that day, as he had done to Lachish.
36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to (AH)Hebron. And they fought against it 37 and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it. He left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and devoted it to destruction and every person in it.
38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned back to (AI)Debir and fought against it 39 and he captured it with its king and all its towns. And they struck them with the edge of the sword and devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. Just as he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and to its king.
40 So Joshua struck the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland (AJ)and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, (AK)but devoted to destruction all that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel commanded. 41 And Joshua struck them from (AL)Kadesh-barnea as far as Gaza, and all the country of (AM)Goshen, as far as Gibeon. 42 And Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, (AN)because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. 43 (AO)Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
