Astucia de los gabaonitas
9 Y aconteció que cuando se enteraron todos los reyes que estaban al otro lado del Jordán, en los montes, en los valles y en toda la costa del mar Grande(A) hacia el Líbano, los reyes de los hititas, amorreos, cananeos, ferezeos, heveos y jebuseos(B), 2 a una se reunieron y se pusieron de acuerdo[a](C) para pelear contra Josué y contra Israel.
3 Cuando los habitantes de Gabaón se enteraron de lo que Josué había hecho a Jericó y a Hai(D), 4 ellos también usaron de astucia y fueron como embajadores[b], y llevaron alforjas viejas sobre sus asnos, y odres de vino viejos, rotos y remendados[c], 5 y sandalias gastadas y remendadas en sus pies, y vestidos viejos sobre sí; y todo el pan de su provisión estaba seco y desmenuzado. 6 Vinieron a Josué al campamento en Gilgal(E), y le dijeron a él y a los hombres de Israel: Hemos venido de un país lejano; haced, pues, pacto con nosotros. 7 Y los hombres de Israel dijeron a los heveos(F): Quizá habitáis en nuestra tierra[d], ¿cómo, pues, haremos pacto con vosotros[e](G)? 8 Respondieron ellos a Josué: Somos tus siervos(H). Y Josué les dijo: ¿Quiénes sois, y de dónde venís? 9 Y le dijeron: Tus siervos han venido de un país muy lejano(I) a causa de la fama del Señor tu Dios; porque hemos oído hablar de Él, de todo lo que hizo en Egipto(J), 10 y de todo lo que hizo a los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán, a Sehón, rey de Hesbón, y a Og, rey de Basán, que estaba en Astarot. 11 Y nuestros ancianos y todos los habitantes de nuestro país nos hablaron, diciendo: «Tomad provisiones en vuestra mano para el camino, id a su encuentro y decidles: “Somos vuestros siervos(K); haced, pues, pacto con nosotros”». 12 Este nuestro pan estaba caliente cuando lo sacamos de nuestras casas para provisión el día que salimos para venir a vosotros; pero he aquí, ahora está seco y desmenuzado. 13 Estos odres de vino que llenamos eran nuevos, y he aquí, están rotos; y estos vestidos nuestros y nuestras sandalias están gastados a causa de lo muy largo del camino. 14 Y los hombres de Israel tomaron de sus provisiones, y no pidieron el consejo[f] del Señor(L). 15 Josué hizo paz con ellos y celebró pacto con ellos(M) para conservarles la vida; también los jefes de la congregación se lo juraron.
16 Y sucedió que al cabo de tres días después de haber hecho pacto con ellos, oyeron que eran vecinos y que habitaban en su tierra[g]. 17 Y partieron los hijos de Israel, y al tercer día llegaron a sus ciudades. Sus ciudades eran Gabaón(N), Cafira, Beerot y Quiriat-jearim. 18 Los hijos de Israel no los mataron[h] porque los jefes de la congregación les habían jurado por el Señor, Dios de Israel. Y toda la congregación murmuraba contra los jefes. 19 Pero todos los jefes dijeron a[i] la congregación: Nosotros les hemos jurado por el Señor, Dios de Israel, y ahora no podemos tocarlos. 20 Esto es lo que haremos con ellos: los dejaremos vivir, para que no venga sobre nosotros la ira por el juramento que les hemos hecho. 21 Y los jefes les dijeron: Dejadlos vivir. Y fueron leñadores y aguadores(O) para toda la congregación, tal como los jefes les habían dicho.
Juicio contra los gabaonitas
22 Entonces Josué los mandó llamar y les habló, diciendo: ¿Por qué nos habéis engañado, diciendo: «Habitamos muy lejos de vosotros», cuando habitáis en nuestra tierra[j](P)? 23 Ahora pues, malditos sois y nunca dejaréis de ser esclavos[k](Q), leñadores y aguadores para la casa de mi Dios. 24 Y ellos respondieron a Josué, y dijeron: Porque ciertamente tus siervos fueron informados de que el Señor tu Dios había mandado a su siervo Moisés que os diera toda la tierra, y que destruyera a todos los habitantes de la tierra delante de vosotros; por tanto, temimos en gran manera por nuestras vidas a causa de vosotros, y hemos hecho(R) esto. 25 Ahora pues, he aquí estamos en tus manos; haz con nosotros lo que te parezca bueno y justo(S). 26 Y así hizo él con ellos, y los libró de las manos de los hijos de Israel, y estos no los mataron. 27 Y aquel día Josué los hizo leñadores y aguadores para la congregación y para el altar del Señor, en el lugar que el Señor escogiera(T), hasta el día de hoy.

9 Cuando oyeron estas cosas todos los reyes que estaban a este lado del Jordán, así en las montañas como en los llanos, y en toda la costa del Mar Grande delante del Líbano, los heteos, amorreos, cananeos, ferezeos, heveos y jebuseos,
2 se concertaron para pelear contra Josué e Israel.
Engaño de los gabaonitas
3 Mas los moradores de Gabaón, cuando oyeron lo que Josué había hecho a Jericó y a Hay,
4 usaron de astucia; pues fueron y se fingieron embajadores, y tomaron sacos viejos sobre sus asnos, y cueros viejos de vino, rotos y remendados,
5 y sandalias viejas y recosidas en sus pies, con vestidos viejos sobre sí; y todo el pan que traían para el camino era seco y mohoso.
6 Y vinieron a Josué al campamento en Gilgal, y le dijeron a él y a los de Israel: Nosotros venimos de tierra muy lejana; haced, pues, ahora alianza con nosotros.
7 Y los de Israel respondieron a los heveos: Quizás habitáis en medio de nosotros. ¿Cómo, pues, podremos hacer alianza con vosotros?
8 Ellos respondieron a Josué: Nosotros somos tus siervos. Y Josué les dijo: ¿Quiénes sois vosotros, y de dónde venís?
9 Y ellos respondieron: Tus siervos han venido de tierra muy lejana, por causa del nombre de Jehová tu Dios; porque hemos oído su fama, y todo lo que hizo en Egipto,
10 y todo lo que hizo a los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán: a Sehón rey de Hesbón, y a Og rey de Basán, que estaba en Astarot.
11 Por lo cual nuestros ancianos y todos los moradores de nuestra tierra nos dijeron: Tomad en vuestras manos provisión para el camino, e id al encuentro de ellos, y decidles: Nosotros somos vuestros siervos; haced ahora alianza con nosotros.
12 Este nuestro pan lo tomamos caliente de nuestras casas para el camino el día que salimos para venir a vosotros; y helo aquí ahora ya seco y mohoso.
13 Estos cueros de vino también los llenamos nuevos; helos aquí ya rotos; también estos nuestros vestidos y nuestras sandalias están ya viejos a causa de lo muy largo del camino.
14 Y los hombres de Israel aceptaron sus provisiones, sin consultar el oráculo de Jehová.
15 Y Josué hizo paz con ellos, y celebró con ellos alianza concediéndoles la vida; y también lo juraron los príncipes de la congregación.
16 Pasados tres días después que hicieron alianza con ellos, oyeron que eran sus vecinos, y que habitaban en medio de ellos.
17 Y salieron los hijos de Israel, y al tercer día llegaron a las ciudades de ellos; y sus ciudades eran Gabaón, Cafirá, Beerot y Quiryat-jearim.
18 Y no los mataron los hijos de Israel, por cuanto los príncipes de la congregación les habían jurado por Jehová el Dios de Israel. Y toda la congregación murmuraba contra los príncipes.
19 Mas todos los príncipes respondieron a toda la congregación: Nosotros les hemos jurado por Jehová Dios de Israel; por tanto, ahora no les podemos tocar.
20 Esto haremos con ellos: les dejaremos vivir, para que no venga ira sobre nosotros por causa del juramento que les hemos hecho.
21 Dijeron, pues, de ellos los príncipes: Dejadlos vivir; pero que sean leñadores y aguadores para toda la congregación. Así les concedieron la vida, según les habían prometido los príncipes.
22 Y llamándolos Josué, les habló diciendo: ¿Por qué nos habéis engañado, diciendo: Habitamos muy lejos de vosotros, siendo así que moráis en medio de nosotros?
23 Ahora, pues, malditos sois, y no dejará de haber de entre vosotros siervos, y quien corte la leña y saque el agua para la casa de mi Dios.
24 Y ellos respondieron a Josué y dijeron: Como fue dado a entender a tus siervos que Jehová tu Dios había mandado a Moisés su siervo que os había de dar toda la tierra, y que había de destruir a todos los moradores de la tierra delante de vosotros, por esto temimos en gran manera por nuestras vidas a causa de vosotros, e hicimos esto.
25 Ahora, pues, henos aquí en tu mano; lo que te pareciere bueno y recto hacer de nosotros, hazlo.
26 Y él lo hizo así con ellos; pues los libró de la mano de los hijos de Israel, y no los mataron.
27 Y Josué los destinó aquel día a ser leñadores y aguadores para la congregación, y para el altar de Jehová en el lugar que Jehová eligiese, lo que son hasta hoy.

Niloko ng mga Taga-Gibeon ang mga Israelita
9 Narinig ng lahat ng hari sa kanluran ng Jordan ang pagtatagumpay ng mga Israelita. (Ito ay ang mga hari ng mga Heteo, Amoreo, Cananeo, Perezeo, Hiveo, at mga Jebuseo.) Nakatira sila sa mga kabundukan, kaburulan sa kanluran[a] at sa baybayin ng Dagat ng Mediteraneo hanggang sa Lebanon. 2 Nagtipon silang lahat para makipaglaban kay Josue at sa Israel.
3 Pero nang marinig ng mga taga-Gibeon ang ginawa ni Josue sa Jerico at Ai, 4 naghanap sila ng paraan para lokohin si Josue. Nagpadala sila ng mga tao kay Josue, ang mga asno nilaʼy may mga kargang lumang sako at mga sisidlang-balat ng alak na sira-sira at tagpi-tagpi. 5 Nagsuot sila ng mga lumang damit at mga sandalyas na pudpod at tagpi-tagpi. Nagbaon sila ng matitigas at inaamag na mga tinapay. 6 Pagkatapos, pumunta sila kay Josue sa kampo ng Israel sa Gilgal, at sinabi sa kanya at sa mga Israelita, “Pumunta kami rito galing sa malayong lugar para hilingin sa inyo na gumawa kayo ng kasunduan sa amin na hindi nʼyo gagalawin ang mga mamamayan namin.” 7 Pero sumagot ang mga Israelita, “Baka taga-rito rin kayo malapit sa amin. Kaya hindi kami maaaring gumawa ng kasunduan sa inyo.” 8 Nagmakaawa sila kay Josue, “Handa po kaming maging lingkod ninyo.” Nagtanong si Josue sa kanila, “Sino kayo at saan kayo nanggaling?” 9 Sumagot sila, “Galing po kami sa napakalayong lugar. Pumunta kami rito dahil narinig namin ang tungkol sa Panginoon na inyong Dios. Nabalitaan din namin ang lahat ng kanyang ginawa sa Egipto, 10 at sa dalawang hari na Amoreo sa silangan ng Jordan na sina Haring Sihon ng Heshbon, at Haring Og ng Bashan na nakatira sa Ashtarot. 11 Kaya inutusan kami ng mga tagapamahala at mga kababayan namin na maghanda ng pagkain at pumunta rito, at makipagkita sa inyo para sabihin na handa kaming maglingkod sa inyo bastaʼt gumawa lang kayo ng kasunduan sa amin na hindi nʼyo kami gagalawin. 12 Tingnan nʼyo po ang tinapay namin, mainit pa ito pag-alis namin, pero ngayon matigas na at durug-durog pa. 13 Itong mga sisidlang-balat ay bago pa nang salinan namin ng alak, pero tingnan nʼyo po, sira-sira na ito. Ang mga damit at sandalyas namin ay naluma na dahil sa malayong paglalakbay.”
14 Naniwala at tinanggap ng mga Israelita ang mga ebidensya na dala nila, pero hindi sila nagtanong sa Panginoon tungkol dito. 15 Gumawa si Josue ng kasunduan sa kanila, na hindi niya sila gagalawin o kayaʼy papatayin. At nanumpa ang mga pinuno ng mga kapulungan ng Israel sa kasunduang ito.
16 Pagkalipas ng tatlong araw pagkatapos pagtibayin ang kasunduan, nabalitaan ng mga Israelita na malapit lang pala sa kanila ang tinitirhan ng mga taong iyon. 17 Kaya umalis ang mga Israelita, at matapos ang tatlong araw, nakarating sila sa mga lungsod na tinitirhan ng mga taong iyon. Itoʼy ang mga lungsod ng Gibeon, Kefira, Beerot at Kiriat Jearim. 18 Pero hindi sila nilusob ng mga Israelita dahil may sinumpaan silang kasunduan sa mga pinuno ng Israel sa pangalan ng Panginoon, ang Dios ng Israel.
Nagreklamo ang mga Israelita sa mga pinuno nila, 19 pero sumagot ang lahat ng pinuno, “May sinumpaan na tayo sa kanila sa pangalan ng Panginoon, ang Dios ng Israel, kaya ngayon ay hindi natin sila pwedeng galawin. 20 Ganito ang gagawin natin: Hindi natin sila papatayin dahil baka parusahan tayo ng Dios kapag sinira natin ang sumpaan natin sa kanila. 21 Pabayaan natin silang mabuhay, pero gawin natin silang tagapangahoy at tagaigib ng buong mamamayan.” At ganito nga ang nangyari sa mga taga-Gibeon ayon sa sinabi ng mga pinuno tungkol sa kanila.
22 Ipinatawag ni Josue ang mga taga-Gibeon at sinabi, “Bakit nʼyo kami niloko? Bakit nʼyo sinabing galing pa kayo sa malayong lugar pero taga-rito lang pala kayo malapit sa amin? 23 Dahil sa ginawa nʼyo, isusumpa kayo ng Dios: Mula ngayon, maglilingkod kayo bilang tagapangahoy at tagaigib para sa bahay ng aking Dios.” 24 Sumagot sila kay Josue, “Ginawa namin ito dahil natatakot po kami na baka patayin nʼyo kami. Dahil nabalitaan po namin na inutusan ng Panginoon na inyong Dios si Moises na kanyang lingkod, na ibigay sa inyo ang lupaing ito at patayin ang lahat ng nakatira rito. 25 Ngayon, nandito kami sa ilalim ng kapangyarihan nʼyo, kayo ang masusunod kung ano po ang dapat ninyong gawin sa amin.” 26 Hindi pinahintulutan ni Josue na patayin sila ng mga Israelita. 27 Pero ginawa niya silang mga tagapangahoy at tagaigib para sa mga Israelita at sa altar ng Panginoon. Hanggang ngayon, ginagawa nila ang gawaing ito sa lugar na pinili ng Panginoon kung saan siya sasambahin.

The Gibeonites Act with Cunning
9 Now[a] when all the kings who were beyond the Jordan in the hill country and in the Shephelah,[b] and on all the coast of the great sea toward Lebanon[c]—the Hittites,[d] the Amorites,[e] the Canaanites,[f] the Perizzites,[g] the Hivites,[h] and the Jebusites[i]—heard of this, 2 they gathered themselves together to fight with one accord against[j] Joshua and Israel.
3 But the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua did to Jericho and Ai, 4 and they acted on their part with cunning: they went and prepared provisions,[k] and took worn-out sacks[l] for their donkeys and old wineskins that were torn and mended. 5 The sandals on their feet were patched and old, their clothes were old, and their food was dry and crumbled. 6 And they went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far land; so then make a covenant with us.”[m] 7 And the men of Israel said to the Hivites,[n] “Perhaps you are living among us; how can we make a covenant[o] with you?” 8 They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” And Joshua said to them, “Who are you, and from where do you come?” 9 And they said to him, “Your servants have come from a very far land because of the name of Yahweh your God; we have heard of his reputation, of all that he did in Egypt, 10 and of all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan—to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was in Ashtaroth. 11 So our elders said to us and all the inhabitants of our land, ‘Take in your hand provisions for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, “We are your servants; so then make a covenant with us.”’[p] 12 This is our bread; it was hot when we took it from our houses as provisions on the day we set out to come to you. But now, look, it is dry and crumbled. 13 These are the wineskins that we filled new, but look, they have burst; and these are our clothes and sandals that have worn out from the very long journey.” 14 So the leaders[q] took from their provisions, but they did not ask direction from Yahweh.[r] 15 And Joshua made peace with them, and he made a covenant with them[s] to allow them to live happily, and the leaders of the congregation swore an oath to them.
16 And it happened that at the end of three days, after they made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors[t] and living among them. 17 And the Israelites[u] set out and went to their cities on the third day (their cities were Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim). 18 But the Israelites[v] did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by Yahweh the God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against their leaders.[w] 19 But all the leaders of the congregation said, “We have sworn to them by Yahweh the God of Israel, and so we cannot touch them. 20 This we will do to them: we will let them live so that wrath will not be on us because of the oath we swore to them.” 21 And the leaders[x] said to them, “Let them live.” So they became woodcutters and water carriers for all the congregation, just as the leaders had said to them.
22 And Joshua summoned them and said, “Why have you deceived us saying, ‘We are very far from you’ when you are living among us? 23 Therefore you are cursed; some of you will always be slaves as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.” 24 And they answered Joshua and said, “Because it was told with certainty to your servants that Yahweh your God commanded Moses his servant to give to you all the land and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land before you, so we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and so we did this thing. 25 So then, look, we are in your hand; do with us whatever seems good and right in your eyes.” 26 So he did this to them: he saved them from the hand of the Israelites,[y] and they did not kill them. 27 And that day Joshua made them woodcutters and water carriers for the congregation and for the altar of Yahweh, to this day, in the place that he should choose.
