Aan de overkant

4 Toen iedereen aan de overkant was, zei de Heer tegen Jozua: 2 "Zeg nu tegen de twaalf mannen die jullie uit de twaalf stammen hebben uitgekozen: 3 'Haal twaalf stenen hier uit het midden van de Jordaan, van de plek waar de priesters staan. Neem die twaalf stenen mee naar het tentenkamp dat jullie voor de nacht zullen opzetten.' "

4 Toen riep Jozua de twaalf Israëlieten die waren aangewezen, uit elke stam één. 5 Hij zei tegen hen: "Ga naar het midden van de Jordaan, waar de priesters met de kist van het verbond van jullie Heer God staan. Til daar allemaal één steen op je schouder, zodat er evenveel stenen als stammen van Israël zullen zijn. 6 Die stenen zullen voor jullie een teken zijn. Als jullie kinderen later vragen: 'Waarom liggen die stenen daar?' 7 dan moeten jullie tegen hen zeggen: 'Die liggen daar als bewijs dat de Jordaan droogviel toen de kist van het verbond van de Heer de Jordaan overstak. Deze stenen zijn een herinnering daaraan. Zo zullen de Israëlieten het nooit vergeten.' " 8 De Israëlieten deden wat Jozua gezegd had. Ze tilden twaalf stenen uit het midden van de Jordaan, zoals de Heer tegen Jozua gezegd had. Net zoveel stenen als dat er stammen van Israël zijn. En ze namen die stenen mee naar het tentenkamp dat ze voor de nacht hadden opgezet. 9 Ook stapelde Jozua twaalf stenen midden in de Jordaan op, op de plaats waar de priesters hadden gestaan die de kist van het verbond van de Heer droegen. Die stenen liggen daar nog steeds.

10 De priesters die de kist van het verbond droegen, bleven midden in de Jordaan staan. Totdat het volk alles had gedaan wat de Heer tegen Jozua gezegd had. (Ze gehoorzaamden Jozua omdat hij door Mozes was aangewezen als zijn opvolger.) Haastig stak het volk de rivier over. 11 Toen iedereen aan de overkant was, keken ze toe hoe ook de priesters met de kist van het verbond van de Heer naar de overkant kwamen. 12 Ook de stammen van Ruben en Gad en de halve stam van Manasse staken over, klaar voor de strijd, zoals Mozes met hen had afgesproken. 13 Het waren ongeveer 40.000 gewapende mannen. Voor de ogen van de Heer staken ze over naar de vlakte van Jericho, klaar voor de strijd. 14 Op die dag heeft de Heer ervoor gezorgd dat het hele volk groot ontzag voor Jozua kreeg. Zijn leven lang hadden ze voor hem net zoveel ontzag als ze voor Mozes hadden gehad.

15 En de Heer zei tegen Jozua: 16 "Zeg tegen de priesters die de kist met de platte stenen van het verbond dragen, dat ze op de kant moeten komen." 17 En Jozua beval de priesters: "Kom uit de Jordaan." 18 De priesters die de kist van het verbond van de Heer droegen, stapten uit het water van de Jordaan. Zodra hun voeten op de kant stonden, kwam het water van de Jordaan terug naar zijn plaats. Het stroomde net als vroeger langs de hele oever. 19 Het was de tiende dag van de eerste maand toen het volk de Jordaan overstak. En ze zetten hun tentenkamp op bij Gilgal, aan de oostkant van Jericho.

20 Bij Gilgal stapelde Jozua de twaalf stenen op die ze uit de Jordaan hadden meegenomen. 21 En hij zei tegen de Israëlieten: "Als jullie kinderen later aan hun vader vragen: 'Waarom liggen die stenen daar?' 22 dan moeten jullie tegen hen zeggen: 'Hier is Israël over het droge de Jordaan overgestoken. 23 Want jullie Heer God heeft de Jordaan voor ons laten opdrogen, totdat we waren overgestoken. Net zoals jullie Heer God vroeger heeft gedaan met de Rietzee.[a] 24 Hij deed dat omdat Hij wilde dat alle volken van de aarde zouden weten dat jullie Heer God een machtig God is. En ook omdat jullie dan voor altijd diep ontzag voor Hem zouden hebben.' "

Israel Commemorates the Crossing

4 When the entire nation was on the other side,[a] the Lord told Joshua, 2 “Select for yourselves twelve men from the people, one per tribe. 3 Instruct them, ‘Pick up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests[b] stand firmly, and carry them over with you and put them in the place where you camp tonight.’”

4 Joshua summoned the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one per tribe. 5 Joshua told them, “Go in front of the ark of the Lord your God to the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to put a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the Israelite tribes. 6 The stones[c] will be a reminder to you.[d] When your children ask someday, ‘Why are these stones important to you?’ 7 tell them how the water of the Jordan stopped flowing[e] before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the water of the Jordan stopped flowing.[f] These stones will be a lasting memorial for the Israelites.”

8 The Israelites did just as Joshua commanded. They picked up twelve stones, according to the number of the Israelite tribes, from the middle of the Jordan as the Lord had instructed Joshua. They carried them over with them to the camp and put them there. 9 Joshua also set up twelve stones[g] in the middle of the Jordan in the very place where the priests carrying the ark of the covenant stood. They remain there to this very day.

10 Now the priests carrying the ark of the covenant were standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything the Lord had commanded Joshua to tell the people was accomplished, in accordance with all that Moses had commanded Joshua. The people went across quickly, 11 and when all the people had finished crossing, the ark of the Lord and the priests crossed as the people looked on.[h] 12 The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed for battle ahead of the Israelites, just as Moses had instructed them. 13 About 40,000 battle-ready troops[i] marched past the Lord to fight[j] on the rift valley plains[k] of Jericho. 14 That day the Lord brought honor to Joshua before all Israel. They respected[l] him all his life,[m] just as they had respected[n] Moses.

15 The Lord told Joshua, 16 “Instruct the priests carrying the ark of the covenantal laws[o] to come up from the Jordan.” 17 So Joshua instructed the priests, “Come up from the Jordan!” 18 The priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord came up from the middle of the Jordan, and as soon as they set foot on dry land,[p] the water of the Jordan flowed again and returned to flood stage.[q]

19 The people went up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month[r] and camped in Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho. 20 Now Joshua set up in Gilgal the[s] twelve stones they had taken from the Jordan. 21 He told the Israelites, “When your children someday ask their fathers, ‘What do these stones represent?’[t] 22 explain to[u] your children, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan River[v] on dry ground.’ 23 For the Lord your God dried up the water of the Jordan before you while you crossed over. It was just like when the Lord your God dried up the Red Sea before us while we crossed it.[w] 24 He has done this so[x] all the nations[y] of the earth might recognize the Lord’s power[z] and so you might always obey[aa] the Lord your God.”

The region is characterized by gently sloping plains which descend about 450 feet over the five miles from Jericho to the Jordan. Many translation say simply the “plains of Jericho” for the portion west of the Jordan and “plains of Moab” for the eastern portion. The translation here clarifies that the plains are part of the rift valley basin.

4 And it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed (A)over the Jordan, that the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying: 2 (B)“Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from every tribe, 3 and command them, saying, ‘Take for yourselves twelve stones from here, out of the midst of the Jordan, from the place where (C)the priests’ feet stood firm. You shall carry them over with you and leave them in (D)the lodging place where you lodge tonight.’ ”

4 Then Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the children of Israel, one man from every tribe; 5 and Joshua said to them: “Cross over before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the Jordan, and each one of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, 6 that this may be (E)a sign among you (F)when your children ask in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ 7 Then you shall answer them that (G)the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for (H)a memorial to the children of Israel forever.”

8 And the children of Israel did so, just as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones from the midst of the Jordan, as the Lord had spoken to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them to the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. 9 Then Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood; and they are there to this day.

10 So the priests who bore the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished that the Lord had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua; and the people hurried and crossed over. 11 Then it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed over, that the (I)ark of the Lord and the priests crossed over in the presence of the people. 12 And (J)the men of Reuben, the men of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses had spoken to them. 13 About forty thousand [a]prepared for war crossed over before the Lord for battle, to the plains of Jericho. 14 On that day the Lord (K)exalted[b] Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they had feared Moses, all the days of his life.

15 Then the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying, 16 “Command the priests who bear (L)the ark of the Testimony to come up from the Jordan.” 17 Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, “Come up from the Jordan.” 18 And it came to pass, when the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord had come from the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet touched the dry land, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place (M)and overflowed all its banks as before.

19 Now the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they camped (N)in Gilgal on the east border of Jericho. 20 And (O)those twelve stones which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal. 21 Then he spoke to the children of Israel, saying: (P)“When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What are these stones?’ 22 then you shall let your children know, saying, (Q)‘Israel crossed over this Jordan on (R)dry land’; 23 for the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, (S)which He dried up before us until we had crossed over, 24 (T)that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of the Lord, that it is (U)mighty, that you may (V)fear the Lord your God [c]forever.”
