10 Y sucedió que cuando Adonisedec, rey de Jerusalén, oyó que Josué había capturado a Hai y que la había destruido por completo[a](A) (como había hecho con Jericó y con su rey, así había hecho con Hai y con su rey), y que los habitantes de Gabaón habían concertado la paz con Israel y estaban dentro de su tierra[b](B), 2 tuvo[c] gran temor(C), porque Gabaón era una gran ciudad, como una de las ciudades reales, y porque era más grande que Hai, y todos sus hombres eran valientes. 3 Por tanto, Adonisedec, rey de Jerusalén, envió mensaje a Hoham, rey de Hebrón, a Piream, rey de Jarmut, a Jafía, rey de Laquis y a Debir, rey de Eglón(D), diciendo: 4 Subid a mí y ayudadme, y ataquemos[d] a Gabaón, porque ha hecho paz con Josué y con los hijos de Israel(E). 5 Se reunieron, pues, los cinco reyes de los amorreos(F), el rey de Jerusalén, el rey de Hebrón, el rey de Jarmut, el rey de Laquis y el rey de Eglón, y subieron ellos con todos sus ejércitos, y acamparon junto a Gabaón y lucharon contra ella.
6 Entonces los hombres de Gabaón enviaron mensaje a Josué al campamento de Gilgal, diciendo: No abandones a[e] tus siervos; sube rápidamente a nosotros, sálvanos y ayúdanos, porque todos los reyes de los amorreos que habitan en los montes se han reunido contra nosotros. 7 Y Josué subió de Gilgal, él y toda la gente de guerra con él, y todos los valientes guerreros(G). 8 Y el Señor dijo a Josué: No les tengas miedo, porque los he entregado en tus manos; ninguno[f] de ellos te podrá resistir(H). 9 Vino, pues, Josué sobre ellos de repente, habiendo marchado[g] toda la noche desde Gilgal. 10 Y el Señor los desconcertó delante de Israel, y los hirió con gran matanza en Gabaón(I), y los persiguió por el camino de la subida de Bet-horón, y los hirió hasta Azeca y Maceda. 11 Y sucedió que mientras huían delante de Israel, cuando estaban en la bajada de Bet-horón, el Señor arrojó desde el cielo grandes piedras sobre ellos(J) hasta Azeca, y murieron; y fueron más los que murieron por las piedras del granizo que los que mataron a espada los hijos de Israel.
12 Entonces Josué habló al Señor el día en que el Señor entregó a los amorreos delante de los hijos de Israel, y dijo en presencia de Israel:
Sol, detente en Gabaón,
y tú luna, en el valle de Ajalón(K).
13 Y el sol se detuvo, y la luna se paró(L),
hasta que la nación se vengó de sus enemigos.
¿No está esto escrito en el libro de Jaser(M)? Y el sol se detuvo en medio del cielo y no se apresuró a ponerse(N) como por un día entero. 14 Y ni antes ni después hubo día como aquel, cuando el Señor prestó atención a la voz de un hombre; porque el Señor peleó por Israel(O). 15 Entonces Josué, y todo Israel con él, volvió al campamento en Gilgal.
Captura y muerte de los cinco reyes
16 Y aquellos cinco reyes(P) habían huido y se habían escondido en la cueva de Maceda. 17 Y fue dado aviso a Josué, diciendo: Los cinco reyes han sido hallados escondidos en la cueva de Maceda. 18 Y Josué dijo: Rodad piedras grandes hacia la entrada[h] de la cueva, y poned junto a ella hombres que los vigilen, 19 pero vosotros no os quedéis ahí; perseguid a vuestros enemigos y atacadlos[i] por la retaguardia. No les permitáis entrar en sus ciudades, porque el Señor vuestro Dios los ha entregado en vuestras manos. 20 Y sucedió que cuando Josué y los hijos de Israel terminaron de herirlos con gran matanza, hasta que fueron destruidos, y que los sobrevivientes que de ellos quedaron habían[j] entrado en las ciudades fortificadas(Q), 21 todo el pueblo volvió en paz al campamento y a Josué en Maceda. Nadie profirió palabra alguna[k] contra ninguno de los hijos de Israel.
22 Entonces Josué dijo: Abrid la entrada[l] de la cueva y sacadme de ella[m] a esos cinco reyes. 23 Así lo hicieron, y le trajeron[n] de la cueva a estos cinco reyes(R): el rey de Jerusalén, el rey de Hebrón, el rey de Jarmut, el rey de Laquis y el rey de Eglón. 24 Y sucedió que cuando llevaron[o] estos reyes a Josué, Josué llamó a todos los hombres de Israel, y dijo a los jefes de los hombres de guerra que habían ido con él: Acercaos, poned vuestro pie sobre el cuello de estos reyes. Ellos se acercaron y pusieron los pies sobre sus cuellos(S). 25 Entonces Josué les dijo: No temáis ni os acobardéis. Sed fuertes y valientes, porque así hará el Señor a todos vuestros enemigos con quienes lucháis(T). 26 Después Josué los hirió, les dio muerte y los colgó de cinco árboles, y quedaron colgados de los árboles hasta la tarde(U). 27 Y sucedió que a la hora de la puesta[p] del sol, Josué dio órdenes y los bajaron de los árboles, y los echaron en la cueva donde se habían escondido; y sobre la boca de la cueva pusieron grandes piedras(V) que permanecen hasta el día de hoy.
28 Y aquel día Josué conquistó a Maceda, y la hirió a filo de espada junto con su rey; la[q] destruyó por completo[r] con todas las personas[s] que había en ella. No dejó ningún sobreviviente(W); e hizo con el rey de Maceda como había hecho con el rey de Jericó.
Otras conquistas de Josué
29 Josué, y todo Israel con él, pasó de Maceda a Libna, y peleó contra Libna(X); 30 y el Señor la entregó también, junto con su rey, en manos de Israel, que la hirió a filo de espada con todas las personas que había en ella. No dejó ningún sobreviviente en ella, e hizo con su rey como había hecho con el rey de Jericó.
31 Josué, y todo Israel con él, pasó de Libna a Laquis, acampó cerca de ella y la atacó. 32 Y el Señor entregó a Laquis en manos de Israel, la cual conquistó al segundo día, y la hirió a filo de espada con todas las personas que había en ella, conforme a todo lo que había hecho a Libna.
33 Entonces Horam, rey de Gezer(Y), subió en ayuda de Laquis, y Josué lo derrotó[t] a él y a su pueblo, hasta no dejar sobreviviente alguno.
34 Josué, y todo Israel con él, pasó de Laquis a Eglón, y acamparon cerca de ella y la atacaron. 35 La conquistaron aquel mismo día y la hirieron a filo de espada; y destruyó por completo aquel día a todas las personas que había en ella, conforme a todo lo que había hecho a Laquis.
36 Entonces subió Josué, y todo Israel con él, de Eglón a Hebrón(Z), y pelearon contra ella. 37 La conquistaron y la hirieron a filo de espada, con su rey, todas sus ciudades y todas las personas que había en ella. No dejó ningún sobreviviente, conforme a todo lo que había hecho a Eglón. La destruyó por completo con todas las personas que había en ella.
38 Después Josué, y todo Israel con él, se volvió contra Debir(AA) y peleó contra ella. 39 La conquistó, con su rey y todas sus ciudades, hiriéndolas a filo de espada; y destruyó por completo a todas las personas que había en ella. No dejó sobreviviente alguno. Como había hecho con Hebrón, y como había hecho también con Libna y su rey, así hizo con Debir y su rey.
40 Hirió, pues, Josué toda la tierra: la región montañosa, el Neguev[u](AB), la tierra baja[v] y las laderas, y a todos sus reyes. No dejó ningún sobreviviente, sino que destruyó por completo(AC) a todo el que tenía vida[w], tal como el Señor, Dios de Israel, había mandado(AD). 41 Josué los hirió desde Cades-barnea hasta Gaza, y todo el territorio de Gosén(AE) hasta Gabaón. 42 A todos estos reyes y sus territorios los capturó Josué de una vez, porque el Señor, Dios de Israel, combatía por Israel(AF). 43 Y volvió Josué, y todo Israel con él, al campamento en Gilgal.

10 Cuando Adonisedec rey de Jerusalén oyó que Josué había tomado a Hay, y que la había asolado (como había hecho a Jericó y a su rey, así hizo a Hay y a su rey), y que los moradores de Gabaón habían hecho paz con los israelitas, y que estaban entre ellos,
2 tuvo gran temor; porque Gabaón era una gran ciudad, como una de las ciudades reales, y mayor que Hay, y todos sus hombres eran fuertes.
3 Por lo cual Adonisedec rey de Jerusalén envió a Hoham rey de Hebrón, a Piream rey de Jarmut, a Jafía rey de Laquís y a Debir rey de Eglón, diciendo:
4 Subid a mí y ayudadme, y combatamos a Gabaón; porque ha hecho paz con Josué y con los hijos de Israel.
5 Y cinco reyes de los amorreos, el rey de Jerusalén, el rey de Hebrón, el rey de Jarmut, el rey de Laquís y el rey de Eglón, se juntaron y subieron, ellos con todos sus ejércitos, y acamparon cerca de Gabaón, y pelearon contra ella.
6 Entonces los moradores de Gabaón enviaron a decir a Josué al campamento en Gilgal: No niegues ayuda a tus siervos; sube prontamente a nosotros para defendernos y ayudarnos; porque todos los reyes de los amorreos que habitan en las montañas se han unido contra nosotros.
7 Y subió Josué de Gilgal, él y todo el pueblo de guerra con él, y todos los hombres valientes.
8 Y Jehová dijo a Josué: No tengas temor de ellos; porque yo los he entregado en tu mano, y ninguno de ellos prevalecerá delante de ti.
9 Y Josué vino a ellos de repente, habiendo subido toda la noche desde Gilgal.
El socorro de lo alto
10 Y Jehová los llenó de consternación delante de Israel, y los batió con gran mortandad en Gabaón; y los siguió por el camino que sube a Bet-horón, y los hirió hasta Azecá y Maquedá.
11 Y mientras iban huyendo de los israelitas, a la bajada de Bet-horón, Jehová arrojó desde el cielo grandes piedras sobre ellos hasta Azecá, y murieron; y fueron más los que murieron por las piedras del granizo que los que los hijos de Israel mataron a espada.
12 Entonces Josué habló a Jehová el día en que Jehová entregó al amorreo delante de los hijos de Israel, y dijo en presencia de los israelitas:
Sol, detente en Gabaón;
Y tú, luna, en el valle de Ajalón.
13 Y el sol se detuvo y la luna se paró,
Hasta que el pueblo se hubo vengado de sus enemigos.
¿No está escrito esto en el libro de Jaser? Y el sol se paró en medio del cielo, y no se apresuró a ponerse casi un día entero.
14 Y no hubo día como aquel, ni antes ni después de él, habiendo atendido Jehová a la voz de un hombre; porque Jehová peleaba por Israel.
15 Y Josué, y todo Israel con él, volvió al campamento en Gilgal.
Los cinco reyes de la cueva de Maquedá
16 Y los cinco reyes huyeron, y se escondieron en una cueva en Maquedá.
17 Y fue dado aviso a Josué que los cinco reyes habían sido hallados escondidos en una cueva en Maquedá.
18 Entonces Josué dijo: Rodad grandes piedras a la entrada de la cueva, y poned hombres junto a ella para que los guarden;
19 y vosotros no os detengáis, sino seguid a vuestros enemigos, y heridles la retaguardia, sin dejarles entrar en sus ciudades; porque Jehová vuestro Dios los ha entregado en vuestra mano.
20 Y aconteció que cuando Josué y los hijos de Israel acabaron de herirlos con gran mortandad hasta destruirlos, los que quedaron de ellos se metieron en las ciudades fortificadas.
21 Todo el pueblo volvió sano y salvo a Josué, al campamento en Maquedá; y nadie osó hablar contra los hijos de Israel.
22 Entonces dijo Josué: Abrid la entrada de la cueva, y sacad de ella a esos cinco reyes.
23 Y lo hicieron así, y sacaron de la cueva a aquellos cinco reyes: al rey de Jerusalén, al rey de Hebrón, al rey de Jarmut, al rey de Laquís y al rey de Eglón.
24 Y cuando los hubieron llevado a Josué, llamó Josué a todos los varones de Israel, y dijo a los principales de la gente de guerra que habían venido con él: Acercaos, y poned vuestros pies sobre los cuellos de estos reyes. Y ellos se acercaron y pusieron sus pies sobre los cuellos de ellos.
25 Y Josué les dijo: No temáis, ni os atemoricéis; sed fuertes y valientes, porque así hará Jehová a todos vuestros enemigos contra los cuales peleáis.
26 Acto seguido, Josué los hirió y los mató, y los hizo colgar en cinco árboles, de los que quedaron colgados hasta caer la noche.
27 Y cuando el sol se iba a poner, mandó Josué que los quitasen de los árboles, y los echasen en la cueva donde se habían escondido; y pusieron grandes piedras a la entrada de la cueva, y allí están todavía hoy.
28 En aquel mismo día tomó Josué a Maquedá, y la hirió a filo de espada, y mató a su rey; por completo los destruyó, con todo lo que en ella tenía vida, sin dejar nada; e hizo al rey de Maquedá como había hecho al rey de Jericó.
29 Y de Maquedá pasó Josué, y todo Israel con él, a Libná; y peleó contra Libná;
30 y Jehová la entregó también a ella y a su rey en manos de Israel; y la hirió a filo de espada, con todo lo que en ella tenía vida, sin dejar nada; e hizo a su rey de la manera como había hecho al rey de Jericó.
31 Y Josué, y todo Israel con él, pasó de Libná a Laquís, y acampó cerca de ella, y la combatió;
32 y Jehová entregó a Laquís en mano de Israel, y la tomó al día siguiente, y la hirió a filo de espada, con todo lo que en ella tenía vida, así como había hecho en Libná.
33 Entonces Horam rey de Gézer subió en ayuda de Laquís; mas a él y a su pueblo destruyó Josué, hasta no dejar a ningún superviviente.
34 De Laquís pasó Josué, y todo Israel con él, a Eglón; y acamparon cerca de ella, y la combatieron;

36 Subió luego Josué, y todo Israel con él, de Eglón a Hebrón, y la combatieron.
37 Y tomándola, la hirieron a filo de espada, a su rey y a todas sus ciudades, con todo lo que en ella tenía vida, sin dejar nada; como había hecho a Eglón, así la destruyeron con todo lo que en ella tenía vida.
38 Después volvió Josué, y todo Israel con él, sobre Debir, y combatió contra ella;
39 y la tomó, y a su rey, y a todas sus ciudades; y las hirieron a filo de espada, y destruyeron todo lo que allí dentro tenía vida, sin dejar uno solo; como había hecho a Hebrón, y como había hecho a Libná y a su rey, así hizo a Debir y a su rey.
40 Hirió, pues, Josué toda la región de las montañas, del Négueb, de los llanos y de las laderas, y a todos sus reyes, sin dejar nada; todo lo que tenía vida lo mató, como Jehová Dios de Israel se lo había mandado.
41 Y los hirió Josué desde Cadés-barnea hasta Gaza, y toda la tierra de Gosén hasta Gabaón.
42 Todos estos reyes y sus tierras los tomó Josué de una vez; porque Jehová el Dios de Israel peleaba por Israel.

10 Nabalitaan ni Haring Adoni Zedek ng Jerusalem na inagaw ni Josue ang Ai at nilipol nang lubusan at pinatay ang hari nito, gaya ng ginawa niya sa Jerico at sa hari nito. Nabalitaan din niya na ang mga taga-Gibeon ay nakipagkaibigan na sa mga Israelita at namuhay kasama nila. 2 Natakot siya at ang mga tao sa kanyang nasasakupan dahil alam niya na ang Gibeon ay isang makapangyarihang lungsod na may sarili ring hari. Mas malaki pa ito sa Ai at ang mga sundalo nitoʼy mahuhusay makipaglaban. 3 Kaya nagpadala ng mensahe si Adoni Zedek kina Haring Hoham ng Hebron, Haring Piram ng Jarmut, Haring Jafia ng Lakish, at Haring Debir ng Eglon. 4 Ito ang mensahe niya, “Tulungan nʼyo akong lusubin ang Gibeon dahil nakipagkaibigan ito kay Josue at sa mga Israelita.” 5 Kaya nagkaisa ang limang hari ng mga Amoreo: ang hari ng Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmut, Lakish at Eglon. Tinipon nila ang mga sundalo nila at nilusob ang Gibeon.
6 Nagpadala ng mensahe ang mga taga-Gibeon kay Josue sa kampo nito sa Gilgal. Sinabi nila, “Huwag nʼyo kaming pabayaan, kaming mga lingkod ninyo. Pumunta po kayo agad dito at iligtas kami. Tulungan nʼyo kami dahil pinagtutulungan kami ng lahat ng hari ng mga Amoreo na nakatira sa mga kabundukan.” 7 Kaya umalis si Josue kasama ang lahat ng sundalo niya, pati ang lahat ng mahuhusay makipaglaban. 8 Sinabi ng Panginoon kay Josue, “Huwag kang matakot sa kanila. Ibibigay ko sila sa iyo. Wala kahit isa sa kanila ang makakatalo sa iyo.”
9 Buong gabing naglakad sina Josue mula sa Gilgal, at nilusob nila ang mga kalaban na walang kamalay-malay. 10 Sinindak ng Panginoon ang mga kalaban nang makaharap nila ang mga Israelita, at marami sa kanila ang pinatay doon sa Gibeon. Ang iba sa kanilaʼy hinabol at pinatay sa daang paakyat sa Bet Horon hanggang sa Azeka at Makeda. 11 Patuloy ang paghabol sa kanila ng mga Israelita habang bumababa sila galing sa Bet Horon. At nang papunta sila sa Azeka, pinaulanan sila ng Panginoon ng malalaking yelo at namatay sila. Mas marami pang namatay sa kanila sa yelo kaysa sa espada ng mga Israelita.
12 Nang araw na pinagtagumpay ng Panginoon ang mga Israelita laban sa mga Amoreo, nanalangin si Josue sa Panginoon. Pagkatapos, sinabi niya habang nakikinig ang mga Israelita, “Araw, tumigil ka sa taas ng Gibeon! Ikaw naman buwan, tumigil ka sa taas ng Lambak ng Ayalon.” 13 Kaya tumigil ang araw at ang buwan hanggang sa natalo ng mga Israelita ang mga kalaban nila.
Ang pangyayaring ito ay nakasulat sa Aklat ni Jashar. Tumigil ang araw sa gitna ng langit, at hindi ito lumubog sa buong araw. 14 Hindi pa nangyari ang ganito mula noon, mula noon, na sumagot ang Panginoon sa panalangin ng tao na kagaya nito. Tunay na nakikipaglaban ang Panginoon para sa Israel.
15 Pagkatapos, bumalik si Josue at ang lahat ng mga Israelita sa kampo nila sa Gilgal.

16 Nakatakas ang limang hari at nagtago sa kweba sa Makeda. 17 Pero may nakakita sa kanila na doon sila nagtatago, at sinabi nila ito kay Josue. 18 Kaya sinabi ni Josue, “Tabunan nʼyo ng malalaking bato ang bukana ng kweba at bantayan ninyo. 19 Pero huwag kayong manatili roon kundi habulin nʼyo at lusubin ang mga naiwang kalaban. Siguraduhin ninyong hindi sila makakapasok sa mga lungsod nila. Dahil ibibigay sila sa inyo ng Panginoon na inyong Dios.”
20 Halos naubos ni Josue at ng mga Israelita ang mga kalaban nila. Pero mayroon ding nakaligtas at nakapasok sa mga napapaderang lungsod nito. 21 At bumalik ang lahat ng sundalo kay Josue sa kampo nila sa Makeda. Mula noon, wala nang nagtangkang magsalita laban sa mga Israelita.
22 At nag-utos si Josue, “Buksan nʼyo ang kweba at dalhin dito sa akin ang limang hari.” 23 Kaya pinalabas nila sa kweba ang limang hari: ang hari ng Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmut, Lakish at Eglon. 24 Nang madala na ang limang hari kay Josue, tinipon ni Josue ang lahat ng mga Israelita at sinabi niya sa mga kumander ng mga sundalo niya, “Halikayo, at tapakan nʼyo ang leeg ng mga haring ito.” Kaya lumapit sila at tinapakan nila ang leeg ng mga haring iyon. 25 Sinabi sa kanila ni Josue, “Huwag kayong matakot o kayaʼy panghinaan ng loob. Magpakatatag kayo at magpakatapang. Ito ang gagawin ng Panginoon sa lahat ng kalaban ninyo.” 26 At pinatay ni Josue ang limang hari at ipinabitin sa limang puno hanggang hapon. 27 Nang lumubog na ang araw, ipinakuha ni Josue ang mga bangkay nila at ipinatapon sa kweba na pinagtaguan nila. Tinakpan nila ang bunganga ng kweba ng malalaking bato na hanggang ngayon ay naroon pa.
Sinakop ni Josue ang Iba pang mga Lugar ng mga Amoreo
28 Nang araw na iyon, sinakop ni Josue ang Makeda. Pinapatay niya ang lahat ng naninirahan dito, pati na ang hari nito. Nilipol niya ito nang lubusan, at walang naiwang buhay. Ginawa ni Josue sa hari ng Makeda ang ginawa rin niya sa hari ng Jerico. 29 Mula sa Makeda, pumunta si Josue at ang mga Israelita sa Libna at nilusob ito. 30 Ibinigay din sa kanila ng Panginoon ang lungsod at ang hari nito. Pinatay nila ang lahat ng naninirahan dito, at walang naiwang buhay. Ginawa ni Josue sa hari ng Libna ang ginawa niya sa hari ng Jerico.
31 Mula sa Libna, pumunta si Josue at ang mga Israelita sa Lakish. Pinalibutan nila ito at nilusob. 32 Ibinigay ng Panginoon ang Lakish sa mga Israelita sa ikalawang araw ng labanan. Gaya ng ginawa nila sa Libna, pinatay din nila ang lahat ng naninirahan sa Lakish. 33 Habang nilulusob nila ang Lakish, si Haring Horam ng Gezer at ang mga sundalo nito ay tumulong sa Lakish, pero natalo sila ni Josue, at walang naiwang buhay sa kanila.
34 Mula sa Lakish, pumunta si Josue at ang mga Israelita sa Eglon. Pinalibutan din nila ito at nilusob. 35 Sa mismong araw na iyon, nasakop nila ang Eglon at pinatay ang lahat ng naninirahan dito. Nilipol nila ito nang lubusan gaya ng ginawa nila sa Lakish.
36 Mula sa Eglon, umahon si Josue at ang mga Israelita sa Hebron at nilusob ito. 37 Sinakop nila ang lungsod, at pinatay nila ang hari at ang lahat ng naninirahan dito, pati na ang mga tao sa karatig baryo. Walang naiwang buhay. Winasak nila nang lubusan ang buong lungsod gaya ng ginawa nila sa Eglon.

The Sun Stands Still at Gibeon
10 And it happened that when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua captured Ai and had utterly destroyed it (just as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he did to Ai and its king) and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, 2 he[a] became very afraid because Gibeon was a very large city, like one of the royal cities,[b] and because it was larger than Ai, and all its men were mighty warriors. 3 So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hohman king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, 4 “Come up and help me, and let us attack Gibeon, because it has made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.”[c] 5 And the five kings of the Amorites,[d] the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered together and went up, they and all their forces, and they laid siege to Gibeon[e] and made war against it.
6 And the men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, saying, “Do not abandon[f] your servant. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, for all the kings of the Amorites[g] who dwell in the hill country have gathered against us.” 7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the fighting men[h] with him, all the best warriors.[i] 8 And Yahweh said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for I have given them into your hand; no one will withstand you.[j] 9 Joshua came upon them suddenly by marching up[k] all night from Gilgal. 10 And Yahweh threw them into panic before Israel, who[l] struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and pursued them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. 11 And as they were fleeing from Israel, they were on the slope of Beth-horon, and Yahweh threw huge stones from the heavens on them as far as Azekah; and more died by the hail stones than those whom the Israelites[m] killed by the sword.
12 Then Joshua spoke to Yahweh, on the day Yahweh gave the Amorites[n] over to the Israelites,[o] and he said in the sight of Israel,
“Sun in Gibeon, stand still,
and moon, in the valley of Aijalon.”
13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped,
until the nation took vengeance on its enemies.
Is it not written in the scroll of Jashar? The sun stood still in the middle of the heaven and was not in haste to set for about a full day. 14 There has not been a day like this before it or after, that Yahweh listened to the voice of a man; for Yahweh fought for Israel. 15 And Joshua returned and all Israel with him to the camp at Gilgal.
The Kings of the Amorites Are Killed
16 But these five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. 17 And it was told to Joshua, saying, “The five kings were found hidden in the cave at Makkedah.” 18 And Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and set men in front of it to guard them. 19 But do not stay there; pursue after your enemies and attack them from the rear. Do not allow them to go into their cities, for Yahweh your God has given them into your hand.” 20 When Joshua and the Israelites[p] had finished striking them with a very great blow, until they perished, those of them who survived[q] went into the fortified cities, 21 and all the people returned to the camp safely[r] to Joshua at Makkedah. No one spoke[s] against the Israelites.[t]
22 And Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave, and bring to me those five kings from the cave.” 23 And they did so, and brought him these five kings from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 24 And when they brought these kings to Joshua, Joshua called all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the fighting men[u] who had gone with him, “Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So they came near and put their feet on their necks. 25 And Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid or dismayed! Be strong and bold, for thus Yahweh will do to all your enemies whom you are about to fight. 26 And after this Joshua struck them down and killed them, and he hanged them on five trees. And they were hanging on the trees until the evening. 27 And it happened at the time of sunset,[v] Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they put large stones against the mouth of the cave, which are there to this very day.
28 Joshua captured Makkedah on that day, and he struck it and its king with the edge of the sword;[w] he utterly destroyed it and everyone that was in it. He did not leave behind a survivor. So he did to the king of Makkedah just as he did to the king of Jericho.
Joshua’s Conquest of the South
29 And Joshua passed on, and all of Israel with him, from Makkedah to Libnah, and he fought against Libnah. 30 And Yahweh also gave it into the hand of Israel, and its king and all the people in it he struck with the edge of the sword.[x] He left in it no survivor. He did to its king just as he did to the king of Jericho.
31 And Joshua passed on, and all of Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish, and he laid siege to it[y] and fought against it. 32 And Yahweh gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day. He struck it with the edge of the sword,[z] and everyone in it, just as he did to Libnah.
33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish, and Joshua struck him and his people until he left no survivor behind.
34 And Joshua passed on, and all of Israel with him, from Lachish to Eglon, and they laid siege to it[aa] and fought against it. 35 And they captured it on that day, and he struck it with the edge of the sword,[ab] and all the people that were in it on that day he utterly destroyed as he had done to Lachish.
36 And Joshua went up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron, and they fought against it 37 and captured it, and they struck it with the edge of the sword,[ac] its king and all its cities, and all the people that were in it; he left behind no survivor, as he had done to Eglon, and he utterly destroyed it and all the people that were in it. 38 Then Joshua returned to Debir, and all of Israel with him, and they fought against it, 39 and he captured it and its king and all its cities, and they struck them with the the edge of the sword,[ad] and they utterly destroyed all the people that were in it; he left behind no survivor, just as he had done to Hebron. Thus he did to Debir and its king what he had done to Libnah and its king.
40 So Joshua struck all the land—the hill country, the Negev,[ae] the Shephelah,[af] and the slopes[ag]—and all their kings; he left behind no survivor, and all that breathed[ah] he utterly destroyed as Yahweh the God of Israel commanded. 41 Joshua struck them from Kadesh Barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen up to Gibeon; 42 all of these kings and their land Joshua captured at one time, because Yahweh the God of Israel fought for Israel. 43 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
