The Inheritance West of the Jordan

14 These are the inheritances that the people of Israel received in the land of Canaan, which (A)Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the people of Israel gave them to inherit. Their inheritance was (B)by lot, just as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses for the nine and one-half tribes. (C)For Moses had given an inheritance to the two and one-half tribes beyond the Jordan, (D)but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them. For (E)the people of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion was given to the Levites in the land, but only cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and their substance. The people of Israel did (F)as the Lord commanded Moses; they allotted the land.

Caleb's Request and Inheritance

Then the people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the (G)Kenizzite said to him, “You know (H)what the Lord said to Moses the man of God in Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord (I)sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him word again as it was in my heart. But (J)my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholly followed the Lord my God. And Moses swore on that day, saying, (K)‘Surely the land (L)on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.’ 10 And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, (M)just as he said, these (N)forty-five years since the time that the Lord spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, I am this day (O)eighty-five years old. 11 (P)I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me; my strength now is as my strength was then, for war and (Q)for going and coming. 12 So now give me this hill country of which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the (R)Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the Lord said.”

13 Then Joshua (S)blessed him, and he gave (T)Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. 14 Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, (U)because he wholly followed the Lord, the God of Israel. 15 (V)Now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba.[a] (Arba[b] was the greatest man among the Anakim.) (W)And the land had rest from war.

The Allotment for Judah

15 The allotment for the tribe of the people of Judah according to their clans reached southward (X)to the boundary of Edom, to (Y)the wilderness of Zin at the farthest south. And their south boundary ran from the end of the (Z)Salt Sea, from the bay that faces southward. It goes out southward of (AA)the ascent of Akrabbim, passes along to Zin, and goes up south of Kadesh-barnea, along by Hezron, up to Addar, turns about to Karka, passes along to Azmon, goes out by (AB)the Brook of Egypt, and comes to its end at the sea. This shall be your south boundary. And the east boundary is the (AC)Salt Sea, to the mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary on the north side runs from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary goes up to (AD)Beth-hoglah and passes along north of (AE)Beth-arabah. And the boundary goes up to (AF)the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. And the boundary goes up to Debir from (AG)the Valley of Achor, and so northward, turning toward Gilgal, which is opposite (AH)the ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the valley. And the boundary passes along to the waters of (AI)En-shemesh and ends at (AJ)En-rogel. Then the boundary goes up by (AK)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom at the southern shoulder of the Jebusite ((AL)that is, Jerusalem). And the boundary goes up to the top of the mountain that lies over against the Valley of Hinnom, on the west, at the northern end of the Valley (AM)of Rephaim. Then the boundary extends from the top of the mountain (AN)to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and from there to the cities of Mount Ephron. Then the boundary bends around to Baalah ((AO)that is, Kiriath-jearim). 10 And the boundary circles west of Baalah to Mount Seir, passes along to the northern shoulder of Mount Jearim (that is, Chesalon), and goes down to (AP)Beth-shemesh and passes along by (AQ)Timnah. 11 The boundary goes out (AR)to the shoulder of the hill north of Ekron, then the boundary bends around to Shikkeron and passes along to Mount (AS)Baalah and goes out to Jabneel. Then the boundary comes to an end at the sea. 12 And the west boundary was (AT)the Great Sea with its coastline. This is the boundary around the people of Judah according to their clans.

13 According to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, he gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh a portion among the people of Judah, (AU)Kiriath-arba, that is, (AV)Hebron (Arba was the father of Anak). 14 And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak, (AW)Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, the descendants of Anak. 15 And he went up from there against the inhabitants of Debir. (AX)Now the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher. 16 And Caleb said, “Whoever strikes Kiriath-sepher and captures it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife.” 17 (AY)And Othniel the son of Kenaz, (AZ)the brother of Caleb, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife. 18 When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she got off her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” 19 She said to him, “Give me a blessing. Since you have given me the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.” And he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

20 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the people of Judah according to their clans. 21 The cities belonging to the tribe of the people of Judah in the extreme south, toward the boundary of Edom, were Kabzeel, (BA)Eder, Jagur, 22 Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah, 23 Kedesh, Hazor, Ithnan, 24 (BB)Ziph, Telem, Bealoth, 25 Hazor-hadattah, Kerioth-hezron (that is, Hazor), 26 Amam, Shema, Moladah, 27 Hazar-gaddah, Heshmon, Beth-pelet, 28 Hazar-shual, (BC)Beersheba, Biziothiah, 29 Baalah, Iim, Ezem, 30 Eltolad, Chesil, Hormah, 31 (BD)Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah, 32 Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain, and Rimmon: in all, twenty-nine cities with their villages.

Report of the Spies

25 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26 And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at (A)Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It (B)flows with milk and honey, (C)and this is its fruit. 28 (D)However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 (E)The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. (F)And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.”

30 But (G)Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31 (H)Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 32 So (I)they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and (J)all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the (K)Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the (L)Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves (M)like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

The People Rebel

14 Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people (N)wept that night. And all the people of Israel (O)grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or (P)would that we had died in this wilderness! Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? (Q)Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” And they said to one another, (R)“Let us choose a leader and (S)go back to Egypt.”

Then (T)Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel. (U)And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, (V)“The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. If (W)the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, (X)a land that flows with milk and honey. Only (Y)do not rebel against the Lord. And (Z)do not fear the people of the land, for (AA)they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.” 10 (AB)Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But (AC)the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.

11 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people (AD)despise me? And how long will they not (AE)believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I (AF)will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”

Moses Intercedes for the People

13 But (AG)Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, 14 and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. (AH)They have heard that you, O Lord, are in the midst of this people. For you, O Lord, are seen face to face, and (AI)your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say, 16 ‘It is because the Lord (AJ)was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’ 17 And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying, 18 (AK)‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, (AL)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’ 19 Please (AM)pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just (AN)as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.”

God Promises Judgment

20 Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, (AO)according to your word. 21 But truly, as I live, and as all (AP)the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord, 22 (AQ)none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these (AR)ten times and have not obeyed my voice, 23 (AS)shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. 24 But my servant (AT)Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has (AU)followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. 25 (AV)Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, (AW)turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”

26 And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 27 “How long shall (AX)this wicked congregation grumble against me? (AY)I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. 28 Say to them, (AZ)‘As I live, declares the Lord, (BA)what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: 29 (BB)your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and (BC)of all your number, listed in the census (BD)from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, 30 not one shall come into the land where I (BE)swore that I would make you dwell, (BF)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
