6. IL TRATTATO TRA ISRAELE E GLI ABITANTI DI GABAON
Coalizione contro Israele
9 Non appena ebbero udito questi fatti, tutti i re che si trovavano oltre il Giordano, nella zona montuosa, nel bassopiano collinoso e lungo tutto il litorale del Mar Mediterraneo verso il Libano, gli Hittiti, gli Amorrei, i Cananei, i Perizziti, gli Evei, i Gebusei, 2 si allearono per far guerra di comune accordo contro Giosuè e Israele.
Astuzia degli abitanti di Gàbaon
3 Invece gli abitanti di Gàbaon, quando ebbero sentito ciò che Giosuè aveva fatto a Gerico e ad Ai, 4 ricorsero da parte loro ad un'astuzia: andarono a rifornirsi di vettovaglie, presero sacchi sdrusciti per i loro asini, otri di vino consunti, rotti e rappezzati, 5 si misero ai piedi sandali strappati e ricuciti, addosso vestiti logori. Tutto il pane della loro provvigione era secco e sbriciolato. 6 Andarono poi da Giosuè all'accampamento di Gàlgala e dissero a lui e agli Israeliti: «Veniamo da un paese lontano; stringete con noi un'alleanza». 7 La gente di Israele rispose loro: «Forse abitate in mezzo a noi e come possiamo stringere alleanza con voi?». 8 Risposero a Giosuè: «Noi siamo tuoi servi!» e Giosuè chiese loro: «Chi siete e da dove venite?». 9 Gli risposero: «I tuoi servi vengono da un paese molto lontano, a causa del nome del Signore Dio tuo, poiché abbiamo udito della sua fama, di quanto ha fatto in Egitto, 10 di quanto ha fatto ai due re degli Amorrei, che erano oltre il Giordano, a Sicon, re di Chesbon, e ad Og, re di Basan, che era ad Astarot. 11 Ci dissero allora i nostri vecchi e tutti gli abitanti del nostro paese: Rifornitevi di provviste per la strada, andate loro incontro e dite loro: Noi siamo servi vostri, stringete dunque un'alleanza con noi. 12 Questo è il nostro pane: caldo noi lo prendemmo come provvista nelle nostre case quando uscimmo per venire da voi e ora eccolo secco e ridotto in briciole; 13 questi otri di vino, che noi riempimmo nuovi, eccoli rotti e questi nostri vestiti e i nostri sandali sono consunti per il cammino molto lungo». 14 La gente allora prese le loro provviste senza consultare l'oracolo del Signore. 15 Giosuè fece pace con loro e stipulò l'alleanza di lasciarli vivere; i capi della comunità s'impegnarono verso di loro con giuramento.
16 Tre giorni dopo avere stipulato con essi il patto, gli Israeliti vennero a sapere che quelli erano loro vicini e abitavano in mezzo a loro. 17 Allora gli Israeliti partirono e il terzo giorno entrarono nelle loro città: le loro città erano Gàbaon, Chefira, Beerot e Kiriat-Iarim. 18 Ma gli Israeliti non li uccisero, perché i capi della comunità avevano loro giurato per il Signore, Dio di Israele, e tutta la comunità si lamentò dei capi.

19 Dissero allora tutti i capi dell'intera comunità: «Noi abbiamo loro giurato per il Signore, Dio di Israele, e ora non possiamo colpirli. 20 Faremo loro questo: li lasceremo vivere e così non ci sarà su di noi lo sdegno, a causa del giuramento che abbiamo loro prestato». 21 Ma aggiunsero i capi: «Vivano pure, siano però tagliatori di legna e portatori d'acqua per tutta la comunità». Come i capi ebbero loro parlato, 22 Giosuè chiamò i Gabaoniti e disse loro: «Perché ci avete ingannati, dicendo: Noi abitiamo molto lontano da voi, mentre abitate in mezzo a noi? 23 Orbene voi siete maledetti e nessuno di voi cesserà di essere schiavo e di tagliar legna e di portare acqua per la casa del mio Dio». 24 Risposero a Giosuè e dissero: «Era stato riferito ai tuoi servi quanto il Signore Dio tuo aveva ordinato a Mosè suo servo, di dare cioè a voi tutto il paese e di sterminare dinanzi a voi tutti gli abitanti del paese; allora abbiamo avuto molto timore per le nostre vite a causa vostra e perciò facemmo tal cosa. 25 Ora eccoci nelle tue mani, trattaci pure secondo quanto è buono e giusto ai tuoi occhi». 26 Li trattò allora in questo modo: li salvò dalla mano degli Israeliti, che non li uccisero; 27 e in quel giorno, Giosuè li costituì tagliatori di legna e portatori di acqua per la comunità e per l'altare del Signore, nel luogo che Egli avrebbe scelto, fino ad oggi.

9 Ora, appena seppero queste cose, tutti i re che erano di qua dal Giordano, nella regione montuosa, nella pianura e lungo tutta la costa del Mar grande verso il Libano, lo Hitteo, l'Amoreo, il Cananeo, il Perezeo, lo Hivveo e il Gebuseo,
2 si radunarono insieme di comune accordo per far guerra a Giosuè e a Israele.
3 Quando però gli abitanti di Gabaon vennero a sapere ciò che Giosuè aveva fatto a Gerico e ad Ai,
4 giocarono d'astuzia e si misero in viaggio spacciandosi per ambasciatori; essi caricarono sui loro asini sacchi consunti e vecchi otri di vino strappati e rappezzati,
5 si misero ai piedi sandali vecchi e strappati e addosso vesti logore; e tutto il pane delle loro provviste era duro e sbriciolato.
6 Andarono così da Giosuè all'accampamento di Ghilgal, e dissero a lui e agli uomini d'Israele: «Noi siamo venuti da un paese lontano; or dunque fate alleanza con noi».
7 Ma gli uomini d'Israele risposero agli Hivvei: «Forse abitate in mezzo a noi; come possiamo stringere alleanza con voi?».
8 Essi dissero a Giosuè: «Noi siamo tuoi servi!». Giosuè disse loro: «Chi siete e da dove venite?».
9 Allora essi gli risposero: «I tuoi servi sono venuti da un paese molto lontano, a motivo del nome dell'Eterno, il tuo DIO, perché abbiamo sentito parlare di lui e di tutto ciò che ha fatto in Egitto,
10 come pure di tutto ciò che ha fatto ai due re degli Amorei di là dal Giordano, a Sihon re di Heshbon e a Og re di Bashan, che abitava ad Ashtaroth.
11 Perciò i nostri anziani e tutti gli abitanti del nostro paese ci dissero: Prendete con voi delle provviste per il viaggio, andate loro incontro e dite loro: "Noi siamo vostri servi; fate dunque alleanza con noi".
12 Questo è il nostro pane che prendemmo come provvista caldo dalle nostre case il giorno che partimmo per venire da voi, e ora eccolo duro e sbriciolato;
13 e questi sono gli otri di vino che riempimmo nuovi, ed eccoli rotti; e questi i nostri abiti e i nostri sandali, che si sono logorati a motivo del viaggio molto lungo».
14 Allora gli uomini d'Israele presero alcune delle loro provviste, ma non consultarono l'Eterno.
15 Così Giosuè fece pace con loro e stipulò con loro il patto di lasciarli in vita; e i capi dell'assemblea si obbligarono verso di loro con giuramento.
16 Ma tre giorni dopo che avevano stipulato il patto con loro, vennero a sapere che quelli erano loro vicini e abitavano in mezzo a loro.
17 Allora i figli d'Israele partirono e giunsero alle loro città il terzo giorno; or le loro città erano Gabaon, Kefirah, Beeroth e Kiriath-Jearim.
18 Ma i figli d'Israele non li uccisero, perché i capi dell'assemblea avevano loro giurato nel nome dell'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele. Tutta l'assemblea però mormorò contro i capi.
19 Allora i capi dissero all'intera assemblea: «Noi abbiamo giurato loro nel nome dell'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele; perciò non li possiamo toccare.
20 Questo faremo loro: li lasceremo in vita per non attirarci addosso l'ira dell'Eterno, a motivo del giuramento che abbiamo fatto loro».
21 I capi dissero loro: «Vivano pure, ma siano taglialegna e portatori d'acqua per tutta l'assemblea, come i capi avevano loro detto».
22 Poi Giosuè li chiamò e parlò loro, dicendo: «Perché ci avete ingannati, dicendo: "Noi abitiamo molto lontano da voi", mentre abitate in mezzo a noi?
23 Ora dunque siete maledetti, e non cesserete mai di essere schiavi, spaccalegna e portatori di acqua per la casa del mio DIO».
24 Allora essi risposero a Giosuè e dissero: «Era stato chiaramente riferito ai tuoi servi che il tuo DIO, l'Eterno, aveva comandato al suo servo Mosè di darvi tutto il paese e di sterminare davanti a voi tutti gli abitanti del paese. Perciò noi abbiamo grandemente temuto per le nostre vite a causa vostra, e abbiamo fatto questo.
25 Ed ora eccoci nelle tue mani; fa' a noi come ti sembra buono e giusto».
26 Giosuè li trattò dunque così: li liberò dalle mani dei figli d'Israele, perché questi non li uccidessero;
27 ma in quel giorno li destinò ad essere spaccalegna e portatori d'acqua per l'assemblea e per l'altare dell'Eterno, nel luogo che egli avrebbe scelto, fino al giorno d'oggi.

9 Lúc ấy, tất cả các vua ở tây bộ sông Giô-đanh đều nghe các việc này, các vua vùng rừng núi, vùng đồi thấp dưới chân núi miền tây và vùng ven Biển Lớn đến tận Li-ban (tức là vua dân Hê-tít, dân A-mô-rít, dân Ca-na-an, dân Phê-rê-sít, dân Hê-vít và dân Giê-bu-sít) 2 đều họp nhau để giao chiến với Giô-suê và dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.
3 Nhưng khi dân Ga-ba-ôn nghe tin những điều Giô-suê đã làm cho Giê-ri-cô và A-hi, 4 bèn dùng mưu kế: họ cử một phái đoàn cưỡi lừa chở đầy những bao cũ mòn và bầu rượu cũ nứt, vá lại. 5 Nhân viên phái đoàn mang dép mòn chắp vá và mặc quần áo cũ kỹ; tất cả bánh mang theo đều khô cứng và nổi mốc. 6 Họ đến gặp Giô-suê tại trại quân Ghinh-ganh và thưa với ông và người Y-sơ-ra-ên: “Chúng tôi từ một xứ xa xôi, bây giờ xin quý ngài lập hòa ước với chúng tôi.”
7 Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đáp với người Hê-vít: “Biết đâu các ông ở gần chúng tôi đây. Làm thế nào lập hòa ước với các ông được.”
8 Họ nói với Giô-suê: “Chúng tôi là đầy tớ của ông.” Nhưng Giô-suê chất vấn: “Các ông là ai? Từ đâu đến đây?”
9 Họ đáp: “Đầy tớ các ông từ một xứ rất xa đến đây vì nghe danh tiếng của CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời các ông. Chúng tôi cũng đã nghe báo cáo về Ngài: tất cả những việc Ngài đã làm tại Ai-cập, 10 và tất cả những điều Ngài làm cho hai vua dân A-mô-rít ở đông bộ sông Giô-đanh, tức là Si-hôn, vua Hết-bôn, và Óc, vua Ba-san, trị vì tại Ách-ta-rốt. 11 Các trưởng lão và tất cả dân chúng trong nước chúng tôi bảo chúng tôi: Hãy lấy lương thực dùng dọc đường rồi đi gặp họ và nói: Chúng tôi là đầy tớ quý vị; bây giờ xin quý vị lập hòa ước với chúng tôi. 12 Bánh mì của chúng tôi còn nóng hổi ngày chúng tôi rời nhà và mang theo, mà ngày nay đã khô và mốc meo. 13 Những bầu rượu này còn mới khi chúng tôi đổ rượu vào, mà nay đã nứt bể; áo quần và giầy dép chúng tôi đã cũ mòn vì đi đường rất xa.”
14 Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên thử lương thực của họ nhưng không cầu vấn CHÚA. 15 Giô-suê bèn lập hòa ước với họ, bảo đảm để cho họ sống và các nhà lãnh đạo hội chúng thề nguyện để thông qua hòa ước ấy.
16 Ba ngày sau khi lập ước với người Ga-ba-ôn, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên mới nghe rằng họ là người lân cận và ở gần mình. 17 Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên lên đường và đến ngày thứ ba đã đến các thành: Ga-ba-ôn, Kê-phi-ra, Bê-ê-rốt, và Ki-ri-át Giê-a-rim. 18 Nhưng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên không tấn công họ, vì các nhà lãnh đạo của hội chúng đã thề nguyện với dân này trước mặt CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên.
Cả hội chúng lằm bằm nghịch cùng các nhà lãnh đạo; 19 nhưng tất cả các nhà lãnh đạo đáp: “Chúng tôi đã nhân danh CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, mà thề nguyện cùng dân đó, nên bây giờ chúng ta không thể nào động đến họ nữa. 20 Đây là cách chúng ta đối xử với họ: phải để cho họ sống, đừng vì lời thề nguyện mà chuốc lấy cơn phẫn nộ của CHÚA trên chúng ta.” 21 Các nhà lãnh đạo Y-sơ-ra-ên tiếp: “Hãy để cho họ sống nhưng phải làm dân công đốn củi xách nước cho cả hội chúng.” Vậy, họ giữ lời hứa của các nhà lãnh đạo.
22 Lúc ấy Giô-suê triệu tập dân Ga-ba-ôn và bảo: “Tại sao các ngươi lừa gạt chúng ta rằng: chúng tôi ở rất xa các ông mà thật ra các ngươi ở gần chúng ta? 23 Bây giờ các ngươi bị rủa sả: các ngươi không bao giờ thôi làm nô lệ, mãi mãi đốn củi và xách nước cho nhà của Đức Chúa Trời ta.”
24 Họ thưa cùng Giô-suê: “Đầy tớ của ông được nghe rõ rằng: CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của các ông, đã phán dặn Môi-se, đầy tớ Ngài, ban cho quý vị toàn xứ này và tiêu diệt tất cả dân cư trong xứ trước mặt mình. Vì sợ quý vị giết hại mạng sống nên chúng tôi mới làm như thế. 25 Bây giờ, chúng tôi ở trong tay quý vị; quý vị cứ đối xử với chúng tôi theo điều quý vị thấy là tốt và phải lẽ.”
26 Vậy, Giô-suê giải cứu họ khỏi bị dân Y-sơ-ra-ên giết. 27 Từ ngày đó, ông cắt đặt dân Ga-ba-ôn làm người đốn củi và xách nước cho hội chúng và cho bàn thờ CHÚA tại nơi nào Ngài sẽ chọn. Đó là việc họ làm cho đến ngày nay.

9 And it came to pass when all the kings who were on this side of the Jordan, in the hills and in the valleys and in all the borders of the Great Sea over against Lebanon — the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite — heard thereof,
2 that they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel with one accord.
3 And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,
4 they worked cunningly, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wineskins, old and rent and bound up,
5 and old and patched shoes upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and moldy.
6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country. Now therefore make ye a league with us.”
7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, “Perhaps ye dwell among us. Then how shall we make a league with you?”
8 And they said unto Joshua, “We are thy servants.” And Joshua said unto them, “Who are ye? And from whence come ye?”
9 And they said unto him, “From a very far country thy servants have come because of the name of the Lord thy God; for we have heard the fame of him and all that he did in Egypt,
10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan — to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.
11 Therefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take provisions with you for the journey, and go to meet them and say unto them, “We are your servants. Therefore now make ye a league with us.”’
12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry and it is moldy.
13 And these skins of wine which we filled were new, and behold, they are rent; and these our garments and our shoes have become old by reason of the very long journey.”
14 And the men took of their provisions, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.
15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them to let them live; and the princes of the congregation swore unto them.
16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors and that they dwelt among them.
17 And the children of Israel journeyed and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim.
18 And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.
19 But all the princes said unto all the congregation, “We have sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel. Now therefore we may not touch them.
20 This we will do to them: we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us because of the oath which we swore unto them.”
21 And the princes said unto them, “Let them live, but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation, as the princes had promised them.”
22 And Joshua called for them, and he spoke unto them, saying, “Why have ye beguiled us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when ye dwell among us?
23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.”
24 And they answered Joshua and said, “Because it was certainly told thy servants how the Lord thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
25 And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.”
26 And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.
27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the Lord, even unto this day, in the place which He should choose.

The Gibeonite Deception
9 Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things—the kings in the hill country,(A) in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea(B) as far as Lebanon(C) (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites,(D) Hivites(E) and Jebusites)(F)— 2 they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel.
3 However, when the people of Gibeon(G) heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,(H) 4 they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded[a] with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. 5 They put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy. 6 Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal(I) and said to him and the Israelites, “We have come from a distant country;(J) make a treaty(K) with us.”
7 The Israelites said to the Hivites,(L) “But perhaps you live near us, so how can we make a treaty(M) with you?”
8 “We are your servants,(N)” they said to Joshua.
But Joshua asked, “Who are you and where do you come from?”
9 They answered: “Your servants have come from a very distant country(O) because of the fame of the Lord your God. For we have heard reports(P) of him: all that he did in Egypt,(Q) 10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan—Sihon king of Heshbon,(R) and Og king of Bashan,(S) who reigned in Ashtaroth.(T) 11 And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, “We are your servants; make a treaty with us.”’ 12 This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is. 13 And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey.”
14 The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire(U) of the Lord. 15 Then Joshua made a treaty of peace(V) with them to let them live,(W) and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.
16 Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near(X) them. 17 So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth(Y) and Kiriath Jearim.(Z) 18 But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath(AA) to them by the Lord, the God of Israel.
The whole assembly grumbled(AB) against the leaders, 19 but all the leaders answered, “We have given them our oath by the Lord, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now. 20 This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that God’s wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath(AC) we swore to them.” 21 They continued, “Let them live,(AD) but let them be woodcutters and water carriers(AE) in the service of the whole assembly.” So the leaders’ promise to them was kept.
22 Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, “Why did you deceive us by saying, ‘We live a long way(AF) from you,’ while actually you live near(AG) us? 23 You are now under a curse:(AH) You will never be released from service as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”
24 They answered Joshua, “Your servants were clearly told(AI) how the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this. 25 We are now in your hands.(AJ) Do to us whatever seems good and right(AK) to you.”
26 So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them. 27 That day he made the Gibeonites(AL) woodcutters and water carriers(AM) for the assembly, to provide for the needs of the altar of the Lord at the place the Lord would choose.(AN) And that is what they are to this day.
