Conquest of Ai
8 The Lord said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged.(A) Take all the troops with you and go and attack Ai. Look, I have handed over to you the king of Ai, his people, city, and land.(B) 2 Treat Ai and its king as you did Jericho and its king,(C) except that you may plunder its spoil and livestock for yourselves.(D) Set an ambush behind the city.’(E)
3 So Joshua and all the troops set out to attack Ai. Joshua selected thirty thousand of his best soldiers and sent them out at night. 4 He commanded them, ‘Pay attention. Lie in ambush behind the city, not too far from it, and all of you be ready.(F) 5 Then I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. When they come out against us as they did the first time, we will flee from them. 6 They will come after us until we have drawn them away from the city, for they will say, “They are fleeing from us as before.” While we are fleeing from them, 7 you are to come out of your ambush and seize the city. The Lord your God will hand it over to you. 8 After taking the city, set it on fire. Follow the Lord’s command – see that you do as I have ordered you.’ 9 So Joshua sent them out, and they went to the ambush site and waited between Bethel and Ai, to the west of Ai. But he spent that night with the troops.
10 Joshua started early the next morning and mobilised them. Then he and the elders of Israel led the people up to Ai. 11 All the troops who were with him went up and approached the city, arriving opposite Ai, and camped to the north of it, with a valley between them and the city. 12 Now Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city. 13 The troops were stationed in this way: the main[a] camp to the north of the city and its rear guard to the west of the city. And that night Joshua went into the valley.
14 When the king of Ai saw the Israelites, the men of the city hurried and went out early in the morning so that he and all his people could engage Israel in battle at a suitable place facing the Arabah. But he did not know there was an ambush waiting for him behind the city. 15 Joshua and all Israel pretended to be beaten back by them and fled towards the wilderness.(G) 16 Then all the troops of Ai were summoned to pursue them, and they pursued Joshua and were drawn away from the city. 17 Not a man was left in Ai or Bethel who did not go out after Israel, leaving the city exposed while they pursued Israel.
18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Hold out the javelin in your hand towards Ai, for I will hand the city over to you.’ So Joshua held out his javelin towards it. 19 When he held out his hand, the men in ambush rose quickly from their position. They ran, entered the city, captured it, and immediately set it on fire.
20 The men of Ai turned and looked back, and smoke from the city was rising to the sky! They could not escape in any direction, and the troops who had fled to the wilderness now became the pursuers. 21 When Joshua and all Israel saw that the men in ambush had captured the city and that smoke was rising from it, they turned back and struck down the men of Ai. 22 Then men in ambush came out of the city against them, and the men of Ai were trapped between the Israelite forces, some on one side and some on the other. They struck them down until no survivor or fugitive remained,(H) 23 but they captured the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua.
24 When Israel had finished killing everyone living in Ai who had pursued them into the open country, and when every last one of them had fallen by the sword, all Israel returned to Ai and struck it down with the sword. 25 The total of those who fell that day, both men and women, was twelve thousand – all the people of Ai. 26 Joshua did not draw back his hand that was holding the javelin until all the inhabitants of Ai were completely destroyed.(I) 27 Israel plundered only the cattle and spoil of that city for themselves, according to the Lord’s command that he had given Joshua.
28 Joshua burned Ai and left it a permanent ruin, still desolate today.(J) 29 He hung[b] the body of the king of Ai on a tree[c] until evening, and at sunset Joshua commanded that they take his body down from the tree.(K) They threw it down at the entrance of the city gate and put a large pile of rocks over it, which still remains today.
Renewed Commitment to the Law
30 At that time Joshua built an altar on Mount Ebal(L) to the Lord, the God of Israel, 31 just as Moses the Lord’s servant had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the book of the law of Moses: an altar of uncut stones on which no iron tool has been used.(M) Then they offered burnt offerings to the Lord and sacrificed fellowship offerings on it. 32 There on the stones, Joshua copied the law of Moses, which he had written in the presence of the Israelites.(N) 33 All Israel – resident foreigner and citizen alike – with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on either side of the ark of the Lord’s covenant facing the Levitical priests who carried it. Half of them were in front of Mount Gerizim and half in front of Mount Ebal,(O) as Moses the Lord’s servant had commanded earlier concerning blessing the people of Israel.(P) 34 Afterwards, Joshua read aloud all the words of the law – the blessings as well as the curses – according to all that is written in the book of the law. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read before the entire assembly of Israel, including the women, the dependents, and the resident foreigners who lived among them.(Q)

Israel utplånar Ai
8 Du ska inte vara rädd eller modlös, sa Herren till Josua. Samla nu hela armén och gå till Ai, för nu är det dags att besegra folket där. Jag har gett dig både kungen och allt folket.
2 Ni ska göra med dem på samma sätt som ni gjorde med Jeriko och kungen där, men den här gången ska ni få ta byte åt er själva, boskap och allt annat. Lägg er i bakhåll på andra sidan staden.
3-4 Innan huvuddelen av styrkan gav sig iväg till Ai, skickade Josua 30.000 av sina modigaste soldater för att lägga sig i bakhåll på andra sidan staden beredda att ingripa.
5 Det här är vår plan, förklarade han. När huvudstyrkan går till anfall, kommer männen i Ai att ge sig ut för att strida, precis som de gjorde förra gången.
6 Vi ska då fly för dem och på så sätt lura dem att lämna staden, för då tänker de: 'Israeliterna flyr igen, precis som förra gången!'
7 Då ska ni rusa fram från ert bakhåll och springa in i staden, för Herren ska ge er den.
8 Sätt eld på staden, som Herren har befallt! Verkställ nu min order!
9 Samma kväll marscherade de iväg och lade sig i bakhåll mellan Betel och västra sidan av Ai, medan Josua och resten av armén stannade kvar i lägret vid Jeriko.
10 Tidigt morgonen därpå mönstrade Josua sina trupper och begav sig iväg mot Ai, följd av de äldste i Israel.
11-13 De stannade vid dalen som ligger norr om staden. Den kvällen sände Josua ytterligare 5.000 man att förena sig med dem som låg i bakhåll väster om staden. Själv stannade han kvar i dalen över natten.
14 När kungen i Ai såg israeliterna på andra sidan dalen gick han och hans män tidigt på morgonen till anfall mot dem på Arabas slätt. Men han visste inte att det fanns män som låg i bakhåll på andra sidan staden.
15 Josua och israeliterna flydde genom öknen som de planerat,
16 och alla soldater i staden fick order om att förfölja dem, vilket betydde att staden blev helt utan försvar.
17 Det fanns inte en enda soldat kvar i Ai eller Betel, och stadsportarna stod vidöppna.
18 Då sa Herren till Josua: Räck ut ditt spjut mot Ai, för jag ska ge dig staden. Josua gjorde som Herren sagt,
19 och när männen som låg i bakhåll såg denna signal, rusade de upp och in i staden och tände eld på den.
20-21 När männen från Ai då vände sig om fick de se rök bolma upp från staden, och de hade ingenstans att ta vägen. Men när Josua och de trupper han hade med sig såg röken inifrån staden visste de att deras män var där. De vände sig då om och gick till anfall mot sina förföljare och dödade dem.
22 Då kom också de israeliter som var inne i staden ut och började anfalla fienden bakifrån. Männen från Ai hamnade på så sätt i en fälla och allesammans dödades. Inte en enda kom undan.
23 Kungen däremot togs till fånga levande och fördes fram inför Josua.
24 När sedan Israels armé hade dödat alla som fanns utanför staden vände de tillbaka och dödade dem som ännu fanns kvar innanför stadsmurarna.
25 Hela Ais befolkning, 12.000 personer, utplånades den dagen.
26 Josua höll nämligen sitt spjut riktat mot Ai till dess den siste av dem som bodde där var död.
27 Endast boskapen fick leva, och israeliterna behöll bytet för sig själva. Herren hade nämligen sagt till Josua att de skulle göra detta.
28 Det blev således ingenting kvar av Ai, och än i dag ligger staden i ruiner.
29 Josua hängde upp kungen från Ai på en påle och lät honom hänga där till kvällen. Vid solnedgången tog han ner kroppen och slängde den framför stadsporten, och man kastade ett stenröse över den, vilket finns där än i dag.
Josua läser lagen för folket
30 Josua byggde ett altare åt Herren Gud på berget Ebal,
31 som Mose hade befallt i sin lagbok: Gör mig ett altare av stenar som varken är tillhuggna eller bearbetade med verktyg, hade Herren sagt om altaret på berget Ebal. Prästerna offrade där brännoffer och tackoffer till Herren,
32 och medan folket såg på, ristade Josua in vart och ett av de tio budorden i stenarna.
33 Allt folket i Israel, även de från andra folk som levde bland dem, och de äldste, ledare och domare, delade sig i två grupper. Den ena gruppen ställde sig vid foten av berget Gerissim och den andra vid Ebal. Mellan dem stod prästerna med arken, beredda att uttala välsignelsen. Allt gjordes enligt de föreskrifter som Mose långt tidigare hade gett dem.
34 Josua läste sedan upp hela lagen för folket med välsignelsen och förbannelsen, precis som Mose hade skrivit i Guds lagbok.
35 Varje befallning som Mose hade gett lästes inför hela församlingen, där både kvinnor och barn och alla övriga som bodde tillsammans med israeliterna var med.
