Los israelitas toman la ciudad de Ai
8 El Señor le dijo a Josué: «No tengas miedo ni te desanimes. Toma a todo tu ejército y ponte en marcha contra la ciudad de Ai, pues yo te daré la victoria sobre el rey de Ai y su gente. Su ciudad y sus territorios serán tuyos, 2 y tú harás con Ai y su rey lo mismo que hiciste con Jericó y su rey, aunque en este caso podrán ustedes quedarse con las cosas y los animales de los vencidos. Prepara un ataque por sorpresa, por la parte de atrás de la ciudad.»
3 Josué se preparó con todo su ejército para marchar contra Ai. Escogió treinta mil guerreros, a los cuales envió de noche 4 con esta orden: «Oigan bien: vayan por la parte de atrás de la ciudad, escóndanse cerca de ella y manténganse listos para atacar. 5 El resto de la gente se acercará conmigo a la ciudad, y cuando los de la ciudad salgan a atacarnos, nosotros huiremos de ellos, como la vez pasada. 6 Ellos nos perseguirán cuando huyamos de la ciudad, pues pensarán que otra vez nos han puesto en fuga. 7 Entonces ustedes saldrán de su escondite y tomarán la ciudad, pues el Señor su Dios se la va a entregar. 8 Una vez que la hayan tomado, quémenla, tal como el Señor lo ha dicho. Es una orden.»
9 Entonces Josué les dio la orden de partir, y ellos fueron y se escondieron entre Betel y Ai, al oeste de Ai, mientras que Josué pasó la noche en el campamento. 10 Al día siguiente, Josué se levantó muy temprano y pasó revista a su gente. Luego se puso al frente de ellos, junto con los ancianos de Israel, y se dispuso a atacar Ai. 11 Todos sus hombres se acercaron a la ciudad por la parte de delante, y acamparon al norte de ella, teniendo el valle entre ellos y la ciudad. 12 Josué escondió unos cinco mil hombres entre Betel y Ai, al oeste de la ciudad, 13 de modo que el ejército quedó repartido en dos grupos, uno escondido al oeste de la ciudad, y el otro en el campamento, al norte. Josué se adelantó aquella noche hasta la mitad del valle.
14 Cuando el rey de Ai vio la situación, se dio prisa y salió con todo su ejército para luchar contra los israelitas en el valle del Jordán, sin saber que otros israelitas estaban escondidos detrás de la ciudad. 15 Josué y sus hombres fingieron ponerse en fuga, y huyeron de los de Ai por el camino del desierto. 16 Entonces todo el ejército de Ai recibió órdenes de perseguirlos, y al perseguir a Josué se alejaron de la ciudad. 17 No hubo un solo hombre de Ai ni de Betel que no saliera a perseguir a los israelitas; pero en sus ansias por perseguirlos dejaron indefensa la ciudad. 18 Entonces el Señor le dijo a Josué: «Da ya la señal de atacar la ciudad de Ai, que yo te la voy a entregar.»
Josué dio la señal, ordenando el ataque. 19 Entonces los que estaban escondidos salieron rápidamente de su escondite, se lanzaron contra la ciudad y la tomaron, prendiéndole fuego en seguida.
20 Cuando los hombres de Ai volvieron atrás la mirada, vieron que el humo de su ciudad subía hasta el cielo. No tenían escape por ningún lado, porque los israelitas que antes huían hacia el desierto, ahora se lanzaban al ataque. 21 En efecto, al ver Josué y todos los israelitas que los que se habían escondido habían tomado ya la ciudad, y que le habían prendido fuego, se volvieron y atacaron a los de Ai. 22 Luego, los que habían tomado la ciudad salieron de ella, de modo que los de Ai quedaron atrapados entre las dos fuerzas israelitas, las cuales atacaron a los de Ai hasta matarlos a todos. 23 Sólo dejaron con vida al rey de Ai, al cual capturaron y llevaron ante Josué.
24 Después de matar a filo de espada a todos los de Ai que habían salido a perseguirlos, los israelitas regresaron a Ai y mataron a los que quedaban. 25 Aquel día murieron los doce mil habitantes de Ai, hombres y mujeres, 26 pues Josué mantuvo la orden de atacar la ciudad hasta que los destruyeron a todos por completo. 27 Los israelitas se quedaron con los animales y las cosas que había en la ciudad, como el Señor le había dicho a Josué, 28 y Josué quemó Ai y la dejó en ruinas para siempre, tal como se ve todavía. 29 Al rey de Ai lo colgó Josué de un árbol hasta el atardecer, y cuando el sol se puso, mandó que lo bajaran y echaran su cadáver a la entrada de la ciudad, y que amontonaran piedras encima de él. El montón de piedras está allí todavía.
Josué lee la ley en el monte Ebal
30 Entonces Josué construyó en el monte Ebal un altar al Señor, el Dios de Israel, 31 tal como Moisés, el siervo del Señor, se lo había ordenado a los israelitas, y conforme a lo que está escrito en el libro de la ley de Moisés: «Un altar de piedras sin labrar.» Entonces los israelitas ofrecieron holocaustos sobre el altar, y presentaron sacrificios de reconciliación. 32 Luego, en presencia de los israelitas, Josué grabó en las piedras del altar la ley que Moisés les había dado. 33 Entonces todo el pueblo, tanto los descendientes de Israel como los extranjeros, y todos los ancianos, oficiales y jueces, se pusieron a los lados del arca de la alianza del Señor, frente a los sacerdotes levitas que la llevaban en hombros. Para la bendición del pueblo de Israel, la mitad de ellos estaba del lado del monte Guerizim, y la otra mitad del lado del monte Ebal, tal como lo había ordenado desde el principio Moisés, el siervo del Señor.
34 Después Josué leyó cada una de las palabras del libro de la ley, tanto las bendiciones como las maldiciones. 35 No hubo una sola palabra de todo lo que Moisés había mandado, que no leyera Josué ante toda la comunidad de Israel, incluyendo a las mujeres y niños, y aun a los extranjeros que vivían entre ellos.

8 Now the Lord said to Joshua: (A)“Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed; take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, (B)I have given into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land. 2 And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to (C)Jericho and its king. Only (D)its spoil and its cattle you shall take as booty for yourselves. Lay an ambush for the city behind it.”
3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai; and Joshua chose thirty thousand mighty men of valor and sent them away by night. 4 And he commanded them, saying: “Behold, (E)you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Do not go very far from the city, but all of you be ready. 5 Then I and all the people who are with me will approach the city; and it will come about, when they come out against us as at the first, that (F)we shall flee before them. 6 For they will come out after us till we have drawn them from the city, for they will say, ‘They are fleeing before us as at the first.’ Therefore we will flee before them. 7 Then you shall rise from the ambush and seize the city, for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hand. 8 And it will be, when you have taken the city, that you shall set the city on fire. According to the commandment of the Lord you shall do. (G)See, I have commanded you.”
9 Joshua therefore sent them out; and they went to lie in ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai; but Joshua lodged that night among the people. 10 Then Joshua rose up early in the morning and mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai. 11 (H)And all the people of war who were with him went up and drew near; and they came before the city and camped on the north side of Ai. Now a valley lay between them and Ai. 12 So he took about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of [a]the city. 13 And when they had set the people, all the army that was on the north of the city, and its rear guard on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.
14 Now it happened, when the king of Ai saw it, that the men of the city hurried and rose early and went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at an appointed place before the plain. But he (I)did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city. 15 And Joshua and all Israel (J)made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness. 16 So all the people who were in Ai were called together to pursue them. And they pursued Joshua and were drawn away from the city. 17 There was not a man left in Ai or Bethel who did not go out after Israel. So they left the city open and pursued Israel.
18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Stretch out the spear that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” And Joshua stretched out the spear that was in his hand toward the city. 19 So those in ambush arose quickly out of their place; they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and they entered the city and took it, and hurried to set the city on fire. 20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended to heaven. So they had no power to flee this way or that way, and the people who had fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.
21 Now when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that the smoke of the city ascended, they turned back and struck down the men of Ai. 22 Then the others came out of the city against them; so they were caught in the midst of Israel, some on this side and some on that side. And they struck them down, so that they (K)let none of them remain or escape. 23 But the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.
24 And it came to pass when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness where they pursued them, and when they all had fallen by the edge of the sword until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword. 25 So it was that all who fell that day, both men and women, were twelve thousand—all the people of Ai. 26 For Joshua did not draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the spear, until he had (L)utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. 27 (M)Only the livestock and the spoil of that city Israel took as booty for themselves, according to the word of the Lord which He had (N)commanded Joshua. 28 So Joshua burned Ai and made it (O)a heap forever, a desolation to this day. 29 (P)And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until evening. (Q)And as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his corpse down from the tree, cast it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and (R)raise over it a great heap of stones that remains to this day.
Joshua Renews the Covenant(S)
30 Now Joshua built an altar to the Lord God of Israel (T)in Mount Ebal, 31 as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses: (U)“an altar of whole stones over which no man has wielded an iron tool.” And (V)they offered on it burnt offerings to the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings. 32 And there, in the presence of the children of Israel, (W)he wrote on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written. 33 Then all Israel, with their elders and officers and judges, stood on either side of the ark before the priests, the Levites, (X)who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, (Y)the stranger as well as he who was born among them. Half of them were in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, (Z)as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel. 34 And afterward (AA)he read all the words of the law, (AB)the blessings and the cursings, according to all that is written in the (AC)Book of the Law. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded which Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel, (AD)with the women, the little ones, (AE)and the strangers who were living among them.

But Joshua spent that night in the valley. 14 And as soon as the king of Ai saw this, he and all his people, the men of the city, hurried and went out early to the appointed place[a] toward (J)the Arabah to meet Israel in battle. (K)But he did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city. 15 And Joshua and all Israel (L)pretended to be beaten before them and fled in the direction of the wilderness. 16 So all the people who were in the city were called together to pursue them, and as they pursued Joshua they (M)were drawn away from the city. 17 Not a man was left in Ai or Bethel who did not go out after Israel. They left the city open and pursued Israel.
18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, (N)“Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city. 19 And the men in the ambush rose quickly out of their place, and as soon as he had stretched out his hand, they ran and entered the city and captured it. And they hurried to set the city on fire. 20 So when the men of Ai looked back, behold, the smoke of the city went up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that, for the people who fled to the wilderness turned back against the pursuers. 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had captured the city, and that the smoke of the city went up, then they turned back and struck down the men of Ai. 22 And the others came out from the city against them, so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side. And Israel struck them down, until there was (O)left none that survived or escaped. 23 But the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him near to Joshua.
24 When Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the open wilderness where they pursued them, and all of them to the very last had fallen by the edge of the sword, all Israel returned to Ai and struck it down with the edge of the sword. 25 And all who fell that day, both men and women, were 12,000, all the people of Ai. 26 But Joshua did not draw back his hand with which he (P)stretched out the javelin until he had devoted all the inhabitants of Ai to destruction.[b] 27 Only the livestock and the spoil of that city Israel took as their plunder, according to the word of the Lord that he (Q)commanded Joshua. 28 So Joshua burned Ai and made it forever a (R)heap of ruins, as it is to this day. 29 (S)And he hanged the king of Ai on a tree until evening. (T)And at sunset Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city and (U)raised over it a great heap of stones, which stands there to this day.
