Israel Is Defeated at Ai
7 (A)But the sons of Israel acted unfaithfully regarding the things designated for destruction, for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, took some of the designated things; therefore the anger of the Lord burned against the sons of Israel.
2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near (B)Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “[a]Go up and spy out the land.” So the men went up and spied out Ai. 3 Then they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not have all the people go up; have only about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai; do not trouble all the people there, for they are few.” 4 So about three thousand men from the people went up there, but (C)they fled [b]from the men of Ai. 5 And the men of Ai struck and killed about thirty-six of their men, and pursued them [c]from the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them on the mountainside; and the (D)hearts of the people melted and became like water.
6 Then Joshua (E)tore his clothes and fell to the ground on his face before the ark of the Lord until the evening, both he and the elders of Israel; and (F)they put dust on their heads. 7 And Joshua said, “Oh, Lord [d]God! Why did You ever bring this people across the Jordan, only to hand us over to the Amorites, to eliminate us? If only we had been willing [e]to live beyond the Jordan! 8 O Lord, what can I say since Israel has turned their [f]back before their enemies? 9 (G)For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear about it, and they will surround us and eliminate our name from the earth. And what will You do for Your great name?”
10 So the Lord said to Joshua, “Stand up! Why is it that you have fallen on your face? 11 Israel has sinned, and (H)they have also violated My covenant which I commanded them. And they have even taken some of the things designated for destruction, and have both stolen and kept it a secret. Furthermore, they have also put them among their own things. 12 Therefore the (I)sons of Israel cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their [g]backs before their enemies, because they have become designated for destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you eliminate from your midst the things designated for destruction. 13 Stand up! (J)Consecrate the people and say, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, because the Lord, the God of Israel, has said this: “(K)There are things designated for destruction in your midst, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you have removed the designated things from your midst.” 14 So in the morning you shall come forward by your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which (L)the Lord selects by lot shall come forward by families, and the family which the Lord selects shall come forward by households, and the household which the Lord selects shall come forward man by man. 15 And (M)it shall be that the one who is selected with the things designated for destruction shall be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because he has violated the covenant of the Lord, and because he (N)has committed a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”
The Sin of Achan
16 So Joshua got up early in the morning and brought Israel forward by [h]tribes, and the tribe of Judah was selected. 17 So he brought the family of Judah forward, and he selected the family of the Zerahites; then he brought the family of the Zerahites forward man by man, and Zabdi was selected. 18 And he brought his household forward man by man; and (O)Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was selected. 19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I implore you, (P)give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel, and give praise to Him; and tell me now what you have done. Do not hide it from me.” 20 So Achan answered Joshua and said, “Truly, I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel, and [i]this is what I did: 21 when I saw among the spoils a beautiful robe from Shinar, two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold fifty shekels in weight, then I (Q)wanted them and took them; and behold, they are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”
22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent with the silver underneath it. 23 So they took them from inside the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the sons of Israel; and they [j]laid them out before the Lord. 24 Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons, his daughters, his [k]oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that belonged to him; and they brought them up to (R)the Valley of [l]Achor. 25 And Joshua said, “Why have you (S)brought disaster on us? The Lord will bring disaster on you this day.” And all Israel stoned [m]them with stones; and they burned them with fire [n]after they had stoned them with stones. 26 Then they erected over him a large heap of stones that stands to this day, and the Lord turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called (T)the Valley of [o]Achor to this day.

7 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against the children of Israel.
2 And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.
3 And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.
4 So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.
5 And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
6 And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the Lord until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
7 And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord God, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!
8 O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!
9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?
10 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
11 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.
12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.
13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.
14 In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the Lord taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the Lord shall take shall come by households; and the household which the Lord shall take shall come man by man.
15 And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.
16 So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:
17 And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:
18 And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.
20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.
23 And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord.
24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.
25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the Lord shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.
26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the Lord turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.

El pecado de Acán
7 Sin embargo, los israelitas desobedecieron al Señor conservando lo que él había decidido que fuera destinado a la destrucción, pues Acán, hijo de Carmí, nieto de Zabdí y bisnieto de Zera, guardó para sí parte del botín que Dios había destinado al exterminio. Este hombre de la tribu de Judá provocó la ira del Señor contra los israelitas.
La derrota en Hai
2 Josué envió a unos hombres de Jericó hacia Hai, lugar cercano a Bet Avén, frente a Betel, y les dijo: «Vayan a explorar la tierra». Fueron, pues, a explorar la ciudad de Hai.
3 Poco después regresaron y dieron el siguiente informe a Josué: «No es necesario que todo el pueblo vaya a la batalla. Dos o tres mil soldados serán suficientes para que tomemos Hai. Esa población tiene muy pocos hombres y no hay necesidad de cansar a todo el pueblo». 4 Por esa razón, solo fueron a la batalla tres mil soldados, pero estos salieron huyendo ante los de Hai. 5 El ejército israelita sufrió treinta y seis bajas, y fue perseguido desde la puerta de la ciudad hasta las canteras. Allí, en una pendiente, fueron vencidos. Como resultado, todo el pueblo se acobardó y se llenó de miedo.
6 Ante esto, Josué rompió sus ropas y se postró rostro en tierra ante el arca del Señor y permaneció allí hasta la tarde. Los jefes de Israel hicieron lo mismo y echaron ceniza sobre su cabeza.[a] 7 Josué reclamó a Dios:
—Señor y Dios, ¿por qué hiciste que este pueblo cruzara el Jordán y luego lo entregaste en manos de los amorreos para que lo destruyeran? ¡Mejor nos hubiéramos quedado al otro lado del río! 8 Dime, Señor, ¿qué puedo decir ahora que Israel ha huido de sus enemigos? 9 Los cananeos se enterarán y llamarán a los pueblos de la región; entonces nos rodearán y nos exterminarán. ¡Qué será de tu gran prestigio para tu nombre!
10 Y el Señor le contestó:
—¡Levántate! ¿Qué haces allí postrado? 11 Los israelitas han pecado y han violado el pacto que concerté con ellos. Se han apropiado del botín de guerra que debía ser destruido y lo han escondido entre sus posesiones. 12 Por eso los israelitas no podrán hacerles frente a sus enemigos, sino que tendrán que huir de sus adversarios. Ellos mismos acarrearon su destrucción. Y, si no destruyen ese botín que está en medio de ustedes, yo no seguiré a su lado.
13 »¡Levántate! ¡Consagra al pueblo! Diles que se consagren para presentarse ante mí mañana y que yo, el Señor, Dios de Israel, declaro: “¡Lo que ordené destruir continúa en medio de ti, Israel! No podrás hacer frente a tus enemigos hasta que hayas destruido esas cosas.
14 »”Mañana por la mañana se presentarán por tribus. La tribu que yo señale por suertes presentará a sus clanes; el clan que el Señor señale presentará a sus familias; y la familia que el Señor señale presentará a sus varones. 15 El que sea sorprendido en posesión del botín de guerra destinado a la destrucción será quemado junto con su familia y sus posesiones, pues ha violado el pacto del Señor y ha causado una gran vergüenza a Israel”».
El castigo de Acán
16 Al día siguiente, muy de madrugada, Josué ordenó que se presentaran una por una las tribus de Israel y la suerte cayó sobre Judá. 17 Todos los clanes de Judá se acercaron y la suerte cayó sobre el clan de Zera. Del clan de Zera la suerte cayó sobre la familia de Zabdí. 18 Josué, entonces, hizo pasar a cada uno de los varones de la familia de Zabdí y la suerte cayó sobre Acán, hijo de Carmí, nieto de Zabdí y bisnieto de Zera. 19 Entonces Josué dijo a Acán:
—Hijo mío, honra y alaba al Señor, Dios de Israel. Cuéntame lo que has hecho. ¡No me ocultes nada!
20 Acán respondió:
—Es cierto que he pecado contra el Señor, Dios de Israel. Esta es mi falta: 21 Vi en el botín un hermoso manto de Sinar,[b] doscientos siclos de plata y una barra de oro que pesaba cincuenta siclos.[c] Los codicié y me apropié de ellos. Entonces los escondí en un hoyo que cavé en medio de mi tienda de campaña. La plata está también allí, debajo de todo.
22 Enseguida, Josué envió a unos mensajeros, los cuales fueron corriendo a la tienda de Acán. Allí encontraron todo lo que Acán había escondido, 23 lo recogieron y se lo llevaron a Josué y a los israelitas, quienes se lo presentaron al Señor.
24 Y Josué y todos los israelitas tomaron a Acán, bisnieto de Zera, y lo llevaron al valle de Acor, junto con la plata, el manto y el oro; también llevaron a sus hijos, sus hijas, el ganado, su tienda de campaña y todas sus posesiones. Cuando llegaron al valle de Acor, 25 Josué exclamó:
—¿Por qué has traído esta desgracia sobre nosotros? ¡Que el Señor haga caer sobre ti esa misma desgracia!
Entonces todos los israelitas apedrearon a Acán y a los suyos, y los quemaron. 26 Luego colocaron sobre ellos un gran montón de piedras que sigue en pie hasta el día de hoy. Por eso aquel lugar se llama valle de Acor.[d] Así aplacó el Señor el ardor de su ira.
