Defeat at Ai
7 But the children of Israel [a]committed a (A)trespass regarding the (B)accursed[b] things, for (C)Achan the son of Carmi, the son of [c]Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the Lord burned against the children of Israel.
2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and spy out the country.” So the men went up and spied out Ai. 3 And they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not weary all the people there, for the people of Ai are few.” 4 So about three thousand men went up there from the people, (D)but they fled before the men of Ai. 5 And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men, for they chased them from before the gate as far as Shebarim, and struck them down on the descent; therefore (E)the[d] hearts of the people melted and became like water.
6 Then Joshua (F)tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they (G)put dust on their heads. 7 And Joshua said, “Alas, Lord [e]God, (H)why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all—to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh, that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan! 8 O Lord, what shall I say when Israel turns its [f]back before its enemies? 9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear it, and surround us, and (I)cut off our name from the earth. Then (J)what will You do for Your great name?”
The Sin of Achan
10 So the Lord said to Joshua: “Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face? 11 Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. (K)For they have even taken some of the [g]accursed things, and have both stolen and (L)deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff. 12 (M)Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because (N)they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you. 13 Get up, (O)sanctify[h] the people, and say, (P)‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the Lord God of Israel: “There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you.” 14 In the morning therefore you shall be brought according to your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which (Q)the Lord takes shall come according to families; and the family which the Lord takes shall come by households; and the household which the Lord takes shall come man by man. 15 (R)Then it shall be that he who is taken with the accursed thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has (S)transgressed[i] the covenant of the Lord, and because he (T)has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.’ ”
16 So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken. 17 He brought the clan of Judah, and he took the family of the Zarhites; and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man, and Zabdi was taken. 18 Then he brought his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, (U)was taken.
19 Now Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I beg you, (V)give glory to the Lord God of Israel, (W)and make confession to Him, and (X)tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.”
20 And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed (Y)I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I have done: 21 When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I [j]coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.”
22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver under it. 23 And they took them from the midst of the tent, brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord. 24 Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and (Z)all that he had, and they brought them to (AA)the Valley of Achor. 25 And Joshua said, (AB)“Why have you troubled us? The Lord will trouble you this day.” (AC)So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones.
26 Then they (AD)raised over him a great heap of stones, still there to this day. So (AE)the Lord turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called (AF)the Valley of [k]Achor to this day.

El pecado de Acán y sus consecuencias
7 Pero los israelitas cometieron un gran delito con lo consagrado al exterminio. Acán, hijo de Carmí, hijo de Zabdí, hijo de Céraj, de la tribu de Judá, se quedó con algo de lo consagrado, y el Señor se encolerizó contra los israelitas.
2 Josué mandó unos hombres desde Jericó hasta Ay, que está junto a Bet Avén, al oriente de Betel, con este encargo:
— Vayan a explorar la comarca.
Los hombres fueron y exploraron Ay. 3 Cuando regresaron, dijeron a Josué:
— Que no suba todo el pueblo; para atacar a Ay basta con que vayan dos o tres mil guerreros. No molestes a todo el pueblo haciendo que suba hasta allí, porque ellos son pocos.
4 Subieron, pues, unos tres mil guerreros, pero tuvieron que huir ante los hombres de Ay 5 que mataron a unos treinta y seis israelitas y persiguieron a los demás desde la puerta de la ciudad hasta Sebarín, batiéndolos en la bajada. Entonces el pueblo se desalentó y se sintió desfallecer.
Oración de Josué y respuesta del Señor
6 Josué se rasgó los vestidos, se postró en adoración delante del Arca del Señor hasta la tarde, y con él los ancianos de Israel; todos esparcieron polvo sobre sus cabezas. 7 Dijo Josué:
— ¡Ah, Señor mi Dios! ¿Por qué has hecho cruzar el Jordán a este pueblo? ¿Lo has hecho para entregarnos en manos de los amorreos y acabar con nosotros? ¡Ojalá hubiésemos seguido viviendo al otro lado del Jordán! 8 Ahora que Israel ha huido ante sus enemigos, ¿qué puedo decir yo? 9 Cuando se enteren los cananeos y todos los habitantes de este país, se aliarán contra nosotros y borrarán nuestro nombre de la tierra. ¿Qué harás tú entonces para salvaguardar el honor de tu nombre?
10 El Señor respondió a Josué:
— ¡Levántate! ¡Vamos! ¿Por qué permaneces así postrado en tierra? 11 Israel ha pecado. Ha violado la alianza que yo había establecido para ellos. Se han quedado con algo de lo consagrado al exterminio; lo han robado y lo han escondido metiéndolo entre su ajuar. 12 Los israelitas no podrán hacer frente a sus enemigos; huirán ante ellos, porque se han convertido en objeto de maldición. Yo no estaré ya con ustedes, a no ser que hagan desaparecer de en medio de ustedes lo consagrado al exterminio. 13 Así que purifica al pueblo y diles: “Purifíquense para mañana, porque así dice el Señor, el Dios de Israel: Hay dentro de ti, Israel, algo consagrado al exterminio; no podrás hacer frente a tus enemigos mientras no lo extirpen de entre ustedes. 14 Mañana por la mañana se presentarán por tribus: la tribu que el Señor señale mediante el sorteo se presentará por clanes, el clan que el Señor señale se presentará por familias, y la familia que el Señor señale se presentará individuo por individuo. 15 A quien la suerte señale como poseedor de lo consagrado al exterminio será entregado al fuego con todo lo que le pertenece, por haber quebrantado la alianza del Señor y haber cometido una infamia en Israel”.
Descubrimiento y castigo del culpable
16 Josué se levantó de madrugada y mandó que Israel se presentara tribu por tribu, quedando señalada mediante sorteo la tribu de Judá. 17 Mandó que se presentaran los clanes de Judá, y el sorteo designó al clan de Céraj. Mandó que se presentara el clan de Céraj por familias, y el sorteo designó a la familia de Zabdí. 18 Mandó que se presentara la familia de Zabdí, individuo por individuo, y el sorteo designó a Acán, hijo de Carmí, hijo de Zabdí, hijo de Céraj, de la tribu de Judá.
19 Dijo entonces Josué a Acán:
— Hijo mío, da gloria al Señor, Dios de Israel, y ríndele alabanza; confiésame lo que has hecho, no me lo ocultes.
20 Acán respondió a Josué:
— Es cierto, yo soy el que ha pecado contra el Señor, Dios de Israel, haciendo lo siguiente: 21 vi entre el botín un manto precioso de Senaar, doscientos siclos de plata y un lingote de oro de cincuenta siclos de peso, me gustaron y me quedé con ellos. Están escondidos bajo tierra en medio de mi tienda; la plata está debajo.
22 Josué envió unos emisarios, que fueran corriendo a la tienda y, en efecto, todo estaba escondido en la tienda y la plata debajo. 23 Lo sacaron de la tienda y lo llevaron ante Josué y ante todos los israelitas, depositándolo delante del Señor.
24 Entonces Josué tomó a Acán, hijo de Céraj, con la plata, el manto y el lingote de oro; tomó también a los hijos e hijas de Acán, junto con su buey, su asno, sus ovejas, su tienda y todas sus pertenencias, llevándolo todo al valle de Acor. El pueblo entero acompañaba a Josué. 25 Dijo entonces Josué:
— ¿Por qué nos has acarreado la desgracia? Que el Señor descargue sobre ti esa misma desgracia en este día.
Así que los israelitas lo apedrearon, y los quemaron en la hoguera y los apedrearon, 26 y levantaron sobre él un gran montón de piedras, que existe todavía hoy. Así se calmó el furor de la cólera del Señor. Por eso aquel lugar se llama todavía hoy valle de Acor.

7 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against the children of Israel.
2 And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.
3 And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.
4 So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.
5 And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
6 And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the Lord until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
7 And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord God, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!
8 O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!
9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?
10 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
11 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.
12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.
13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.
14 In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the Lord taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the Lord shall take shall come by households; and the household which the Lord shall take shall come man by man.
15 And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.
16 So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:

21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.
23 And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord.
24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.
25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the Lord shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.
26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the Lord turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.
