The Fall of Jericho
6 Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in. 2 And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, (A)I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valour. 3 You shall march round the city, all the men of war going round the city once. Thus shall you do for six days. 4 Seven priests shall bear seven (B)trumpets of (C)rams' horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march round the city seven times, and (D)the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5 And when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat,[a] and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.” 6 So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord.” 7 And he said to the people, “Go forward. March round the city and let (E)the armed men pass on before the ark of the Lord.”
8 And just as Joshua had commanded the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the Lord went forward, blowing the trumpets, with the ark of the covenant of the Lord following them. 9 The armed men were walking before the priests who were blowing the trumpets, and the (F)rearguard was walking after the ark, while the trumpets blew continually. 10 But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.” 11 So he caused the ark of the Lord to circle the city, going round it once. And they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp.
12 Then Joshua rose early in the morning, and (G)the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13 And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord walked on, and they blew the trumpets continually. And the armed men were walking before them, and the rearguard was walking after the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets blew continually. 14 And the second day they marched round the city once, and returned into the camp. So they did for six days.
15 On the seventh day they rose early, at the dawn of day, and marched around the city in the same manner seven times. It was only on that day that they marched around the city seven times. 16 And at the seventh time, when the priests had blown the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city. 17 And the city and all that is within it shall be (H)devoted to the Lord for destruction.[b] Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall live, because she (I)hid the messengers whom we sent. 18 But you, keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction, lest when you have devoted them you take any of the devoted things and make the camp of Israel (J)a thing for destruction and (K)bring trouble upon it. 19 But all silver and gold, and every vessel of bronze and iron, are holy to the Lord; they shall go into the treasury of the Lord.” 20 So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted a great shout, and (L)the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they captured the city. 21 Then they (M)devoted all in the city to destruction, both men and women, young and old, oxen, sheep, and donkeys, with the edge of the sword.
22 But to the two men who had spied out the land, Joshua said, “Go into the prostitute's house and bring out from there the woman and all who belong to her, (N)as you swore to her.” 23 So the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab and (O)her father and mother and brothers and all who belonged to her. And they brought all her relatives and put them outside the camp of Israel. 24 And they burned the city with fire, and everything in it. (P)Only the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord. 25 But Rahab the prostitute and her father's household and all who belonged to her, Joshua saved alive. And (Q)she has lived in Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
26 Joshua laid an oath on them at that time, saying, (R)“Cursed before the Lord be the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho.
“At the cost of his firstborn shall he
lay its foundation,
and at the cost of his youngest son
shall he set up its gates.”
27 (S)So the Lord was with Joshua, and (T)his fame was in all the land.

19 But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the Lord: they shall come into the treasury of the Lord.
20 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.
22 But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot's house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.
23 And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.
24 And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord.
25 And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father's household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
26 And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the Lord, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.
27 So the Lord was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.

6 Portarna till Jeriko hölls stängda, därför att stadens invånare var rädda för israeliterna, och ingen tilläts passera varken ut eller in.
2 Jeriko med dess kung och alla soldater är redan besegrat, sa Herren till Josua. Jag har gett dem i din hand!
3-4 Hela er armé ska gå runt staden en gång om dagen i sex dagar. Sju präster ska gå framför arken, och var och en av dessa ska ha en basun av horn att blåsa i. På den sjunde dagen ska ni gå runt staden sju gånger, och prästerna ska blåsa i sina basuner.
5 Och när de blåser en långt utdragen ton, ska folket ropa allt vad de orkar. Då kommer stadens murar att rasa, och var och en ska då gå rakt in i staden.
6-9 Josua sammankallade prästerna och gav order. De beväpnade männen skulle leda processionen, följda av sju präster som skulle blåsa i basunerna. Efter dem skulle prästerna komma med arken, följda av en eftertrupp.
10 Ni måste vara alldeles tysta, sa Josua till folket. Det är bara basunerna som ska höras, och ni får inte ge ifrån er ett enda ljud förrän jag befaller er att ropa högt, men då ska ni också ropa så det verkligen hörs!
11 Den dagen bars arken runt staden en enda gång, och därefter vände alla tillbaka till lägret för natten.
12-14 I gryningen följande dag gick de ännu en gång runt staden och vände sedan tillbaka. Så höll de på i sex dagar.
15 I gryningen den sjunde dagen började de sin vandring som vanligt, men nu gick de runt staden inte bara en gång utan sju gånger.
16 Under det sjunde varvet blåste prästerna en långt utdragen ton i basunerna, och Josua gav följande order: Ropa högt för Herren har gett oss staden!
17 Döda alla utom Rahab och dem som är i hennes hus, för hon skyddade våra spioner.
18 Ni ska inte ta något byte, för allt ska förstöras. Om ni inte gör som jag säger, kommer olycka att drabba oss alla.
19 Men allt silver och guld och sådant som är gjort av koppar eller av järn ska helgas åt Herren och läggas i hans skattkammare.
20 När folket hörde den långa tonen från basunerna ropade de så mycket de orkade. Då rasade Jerikos murar plötsligt ihop framför ögonen på dem, och folket trängde in i staden och intog den.
21 De utplånade allt levande, kvinnor och män, unga och gamla, oxar, får, åsnor, ja, allt.
Rahab och hennes familj räddas
22 Håll nu ert löfte, sa Josua till de båda spionerna. Gå och befria Rahab och alla som är hos henne.
23 De unga männen fann Rahab och räddade henne tillsammans med hennes föräldrar och bröder och andra släktingar som befann sig i huset. Man hade ordnat det så att de fördes till en plats utanför Israels läger.
24 Sedan brände israeliterna hela staden, men silvret och guldet och allt av järn och koppar fördes till Herrens skattkammare.
25 Och därför att Rahab hade gömt spionerna som Josua hade sänt till Jeriko räddade han henne och hennes släktingar, som fanns i huset där hon bodde, och deras ättlingar bor fortfarande bland israeliterna.
26 Därefter uttalade Josua en förbannelse över den som skulle komma på tanken att bygga upp Jeriko på nytt. Han förutsa att när grunden var lagd skulle hans äldste son dö, och när stadsportarna sattes upp hans yngste son.
27 Herren var med Josua, och hans namn blev berömt vida omkring.
