6 Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.
2 And the Lord said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.
3 And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.
4 And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams' horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.
5 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.
6 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord.
7 And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the Lord.
8 And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns passed on before the Lord, and blew with the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the Lord followed them.
9 And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the trumpets, and the rereward came after the ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.
10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.
11 So the ark of the Lord compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.
12 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the Lord.
13 And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord went on continually, and blew with the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rereward came after the ark of the Lord, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.
14 And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.
15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.
16 And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the Lord hath given you the city.
17 And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the Lord: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.
18 And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.
19 But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the Lord: they shall come into the treasury of the Lord.
20 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.
22 But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot's house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.
23 And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.
24 And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord.
25 And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father's household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
26 And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the Lord, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.
27 So the Lord was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.

(B)I have given Jericho into your hand, its (C)king, and the mighty men of valor. 3 You shall march around the city, all you men of war; you shall go all around the city once. This you shall do six days. 4 And seven priests shall bear seven (D)trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. But the seventh day you shall march around the city (E)seven times, and (F)the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5 It shall come to pass, when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up every man straight before him.”
6 Then Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the Lord.” 7 And he said to the people, “Proceed, and march around the city, and let him who is armed advance before the ark of the Lord.”
8 So it was, when Joshua had spoken to the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the Lord advanced and blew the trumpets, and the ark of the covenant of the Lord followed them. 9 The armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, (G)and the rear guard came after the ark, while the priests continued blowing the trumpets. 10 Now Joshua had commanded the people, saying, “You shall not shout or make any noise with your voice, nor shall a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I say to you, ‘Shout!’ Then you shall shout.” 11 So he had (H)the ark of the Lord circle the city, going around it once. Then they came into the camp and [a]lodged in the camp.

20 So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that (O)the wall fell down flat. 22 But Joshua had said to the two men who had spied out the country, “Go into the harlot’s house, and from there bring out the woman and all that she has, (Q)as you swore to her.” 23 And the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab, (R)her father, her mother, her brothers, and all that she had. So they brought out all her relatives and left them outside the camp of Israel. 24 But they burned the city and all that was in it with fire. Only the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze and iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord. 25 And Joshua spared Rahab the harlot, her father’s household, and all that she had. So (S)she dwells in Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
26 Then Joshua [d]charged them at that time, saying, (T)“Cursed be the man before the Lord who rises up and builds this city Jericho; he shall lay its foundation with his firstborn, and with his youngest he shall set up its gates.”
27 So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout all the country.

6 Omdat de Israëlieten waren overgestoken, had Jericho de stadspoorten dicht gedaan. Niemand kon de stad nog in of uit. 2 De engel zei namens de Heer tegen Jozua: "Let op, Ik geef Jericho met zijn koning en zijn helden in je macht. 3 Loop met je hele leger één keer om de stad heen. Doe dat zes dagen lang. 4 Zeven priesters moeten ieder een ramshoorn dragen. Daarmee moeten ze voor de kist van het verbond uit lopen. Op de zevende dag moeten jullie zeven keer om de stad heen trekken. De priesters moeten op de ramshorens blazen. 5 Als jullie horen dat er een lange toon op de ramshorens wordt geblazen, moet het hele volk zo hard mogelijk gaan juichen. Dan zal de muur van de stad instorten. Laat iedereen recht voor zich uit over de muur klimmen."
Het volk trekt rond Jericho
6 Jozua riep de priesters en zei tegen hen: "Neem de kist van het verbond van de Heer. Laat zeven priesters met ramshorens voor de kist van het verbond van de Heer uit lopen." 7 Tegen het volk zei hij: "Loop om de stad heen. Voorop loopt een deel van het leger. Daarachter de priesters met de ramshorens. Daarachter de kist van het verbond, en daarachter de rest van het leger." 8 De zeven priesters die de zeven ramshorens droegen, begonnen te lopen. Ze bliezen op de ramshorens. Ze werden gevolgd door de kist van het verbond van de Heer. 9 Een deel van het leger liep voor de priesters met de ramshorens uit. De rest van het leger kwam achter de kist van het verbond aan. Er werd aldoor op de ramshorens geblazen. 10 Jozua had het volk bevolen: "Jullie mogen niet juichen en zelfs niet praten. Jullie mogen geen woord zeggen tot op de dag dat ik zeg: 'Juich!' Dán moeten jullie juichen." 11 Zo liet hij de kist van het verbond van de Heer één keer om de stad heen trekken. Toen kwam iedereen in het tentenkamp terug. Daar overnachtten ze.
12 De volgende morgen stond Jozua vroeg op. De priesters tilden de kist van het verbond weer op. 13 De zeven priesters liepen met de ramshorens voor de kist van het verbond uit en bliezen onderweg op de horens. Voor hen uit liep een deel van het leger en de anderen kwamen achter de kist van het verbond aan. 14 Zo trokken ze op de tweede dag weer één keer om de stad heen en kwamen daarna terug in het tentenkamp. Dat deden ze zes dagen.
15 Op de zevende dag stonden ze op zodra het licht begon te worden. Ze trokken op dezelfde manier om de stad heen, maar nu zeven keer. Alleen op die dag trokken ze zeven keer om de stad heen. 16 Toen de priesters bij de zevende keer op de horens bliezen, zei Jozua tegen het volk: "Juich, want de Heer heeft jullie de stad gegeven! 17 Maar denk erom: de hele stad en alles wat er in de stad is, is voor de Heer en moet gedood worden. Alleen Rachab mag in leven blijven, met alle mensen die bij haar in huis zijn. Want zij heeft de spionnen verborgen die wij gestuurd hadden. 18 Denk erom dat alles voor de Heer is. Jullie mogen niets als buit meenemen naar het tentenkamp. Als jullie dat tóch doen, komt er een vloek over het tentenkamp van Israël. 19 Alles wat van zilver, goud, koper of ijzer is, is voor de Heer en zal bij de schat van de Heer komen."
Jericho wordt veroverd
20 Toen begonnen de priesters op de ramshorens te blazen. Zodra het volk het geluid van de ramshorens hoorde, begon het te juichen. Toen stortte de stadsmuur in. En het volk klom de stad binnen, ieder recht voor zich uit. Zo veroverden ze de stad. 21 Ze doodden iedereen: mannen en vrouwen, jong en oud. Zelfs de koeien, schapen en ezels doodden ze. 22 Maar tegen de twee mannen die het land hadden verkend, zei Jozua: "Ga naar het huis van Rachab. Breng haar en alle mensen die bij haar horen naar buiten, zoals jullie haar gezworen hebben." 23 De twee verkenners gingen naar binnen en haalden Rachab op met haar vader, haar moeder, haar broers en iedereen die bij haar hoorde, haar hele familie. En ze wezen hun buiten het tentenkamp van Israël een plaats aan waar ze mochten gaan wonen. 24 Maar de stad werd verbrand met alles wat er in was. Alleen alles wat van zilver, goud, koper en ijzer was, werd meegenomen. Het werd bij de schat van het heiligdom van de Heer gelegd. 25 Zo redde Jozua Rachab en haar hele familie. En haar familie heeft altijd bij de Israëlieten gewoond. En daar woont haar familie nu nog steeds, omdat Rachab de verkenners verborgen had die Jozua had gestuurd om Jericho te verkennen. 26 Toen zwoer Jozua: "Vervloekt is de man die de stad Jericho herbouwt. Als hij de stad herbouwt, zal dat zijn oudste zoon het leven kosten. En als hij de poortdeuren inzet, zal dat zijn jongste zoon het leven kosten."[a]
27 En de Heer was met Jozua en in het hele land werden zijn grote daden bekend.

Thus shall you do for six days. 4 Seven priests shall bear seven (B)trumpets of (C)rams' horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and (D)the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5 And when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat,[a] and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.” 6 So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord.” 7 And he said to the people, “Go forward. March around the city and let (E)the armed men pass on before the ark of the Lord.”
8 And just as Joshua had commanded the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the Lord went forward, blowing the trumpets, with the ark of the covenant of the Lord following them. 9 The armed men were walking before the priests who were blowing the trumpets, and the (F)rear guard was walking after the ark, while the trumpets blew continually. 10 But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.” 11 So he caused the ark of the Lord to circle the city, going about it once. And they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp.

As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted a great shout, and (L)the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they captured the city. 21 Then they (M)devoted all in the city to destruction, both men and women, young and old, oxen, sheep, and donkeys, with the edge of the sword.
22 But to the two men who had spied out the land, Joshua said, “Go into the prostitute's house and bring out from there the woman and all who belong to her, (N)as you swore to her.” 23 So the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab and (O)her father and mother and brothers and all who belonged to her. and at the cost of his youngest son
shall he set up its gates.”
27 (S)So the Lord was with Joshua, and (T)his fame was in all the land.
