The Voice
6 The citizens of Jericho had barricaded themselves behind its high walls because of the Israelite forces. No one could get in or out.
Eternal One (to Joshua): 2 I have given Jericho, its king, and all its soldiers into your hands. 3 Every day for the next six days, you will march once around the city walls with all your fighting force. 4 Seven priests will go in front of the covenant chest, each carrying a trumpet made from a ram’s horn. On the seventh day, you will march around the city walls seven times, and the priests will blow their trumpets. 5 When they play a long final blast, then all the people will give a mighty shout. The city walls will collapse in front of you, and all the Israelites will charge in and take the city.
6 So Joshua, the son of Nun, summoned the priests and instructed them.
Joshua: Take up the chest and have seven priests, each carrying a ram’s horn trumpet, march in front of the covenant chest of the Eternal.
7 Then he gave orders to the people.
Joshua: March around the city with the fighting men marching ahead of the chest of the Eternal.
8-9 So they all proceeded as Joshua had commanded them. The fighting men led the way; the seven priests marched after them, blowing their horns continually in front of the covenant chest of the Eternal, and the rear guard followed behind.
10 Joshua gave the Israelites very strict instructions.
Joshua: Don’t yell or shout. Don’t let your voice be heard until the day I tell you. And then I want you to shout with all your might.
11 So they circled the city once, carrying the covenant chest of the Eternal, and that night they returned to their camp. 12 The next morning, Joshua rose early, the priests carried the chest of the Eternal, 13-14 and they all marched around the city in exactly the same order as they had the day before: the armed men, seven trumpeting priests, the chest of the Eternal, and the rear guard, all making one complete circuit around the city with its great walls. That night they returned to their camp, and the next four days proceeded just like the first two.
15 But on the seventh day, they rose with the sun and the procession marched around the city walls seven times; that was the only day they made seven circuits around the city walls. 16 After the seventh and final circuit, when the priests had raised a mighty noise on their trumpets, Joshua turned to the people.
Joshua: Shout! Shout! For the Eternal One has given you the city! 17 The city and all who are in it will be destroyed completely as an offering to Him, except for the prostitute Rahab and those who are with her in her house. Her life will be spared as a reward for sheltering our two spies.
18 Be sure to stay away from these things that He has devoted to complete destruction so that you won’t be tempted to pick something up and carry it away. Anyone who disobeys God in this matter will bring destruction on all of us.
19 Any silver or gold, any bronze or iron vessels should not be burned; instead, they should be set aside for the Eternal’s treasury.
20 Then the people shouted, and the trumpets blasted. The noise of the voices and trumpets rose higher and higher, and the thick walls of Jericho collapsed, just as God had promised. When the wall fell before them, they rushed straight ahead and took the city, 21 killing everyone—all the men and women and children, all the cattle and livestock—with their swords.
Joshua (to the two spies): 22 Go back to the house of the prostitute, and bring her out with all of those who have hidden there so that you can keep your word.
23 So they set off through the destruction, found Rahab’s house, and brought her and all she had—father and mother, brothers and sisters, and all her relatives—out of the fallen city to a place outside the camp of Israel.
24 So Jericho was destroyed completely, burned to the ground except for the precious metals and iron and bronze vessels that were put into the treasury of the Eternal’s house. 25 But Joshua spared the life of Rahab the prostitute, all her family, and all she had because she was faithful to the spies he had sent, and she lived among the Israelites from that day on.
26 When the city lay in smoke and ashes, Joshua pronounced a curse.
Joshua: May the Eternal curse anyone who ever rebuilds this city, this Jericho! If he lays new foundations, it will be over the grave of his firstborn; if he raises new gates, it will be to contain the corpse of his youngest!
27 The Eternal One had helped Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.

6 Now the gates of Jericho(A) were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.
2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered(B) Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns(C) in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.(D) 5 When you hear them sound a long blast(E) on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout;(F) then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”
6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.”(G) 7 And he ordered the army, “Advance(H)! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark(I) of the Lord.”
8 When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them. 9 The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard(J) followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had commanded the army, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!(K)” 11 So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there.
12 Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13 The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.
15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times.(L) 16 The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city!(M) 17 The city and all that is in it are to be devoted[a](N) to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute(O) and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid(P) the spies we sent. 18 But keep away from the devoted things,(Q) so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction(R) and bring trouble(S) on it. 19 All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(T) are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.”
20 When the trumpets sounded,(U) the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout,(V) the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.(W) 21 They devoted(X) the city to the Lord and destroyed(Y) with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.
22 Joshua said to the two men(Z) who had spied out(AA) the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.(AB)” 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her.(AC) They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.
24 Then they burned the whole city(AD) and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(AE) into the treasury of the Lord’s house.(AF) 25 But Joshua spared(AG) Rahab the prostitute,(AH) with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho(AI)—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.
26 At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath:(AJ) “Cursed(AK) before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:
“At the cost of his firstborn son
he will lay its foundations;
at the cost of his youngest
he will set up its gates.”(AL)
27 So the Lord was with Joshua,(AM) and his fame spread(AN) throughout the land.

4 Och sju präster skola bära de sju jubelbasunerna framför arken; men på sjunde dagen skolen I tåga omkring staden sju gånger; och prästerna skola stöta i basunerna.
5 Och när det blåses i jubelhornet med utdragen ton, och I hören basunljudet, skall allt folket upphäva ett stort härskri; då skola stadsmurarna falla på stället, och folket skall draga in över dem, var och en rätt fram.»
6 Då kallade Josua, Nuns son, till sig prästerna och sade till dem: »Tagen förbundsarken, och sju präster skola bära sju jubelbasuner framför HERRENS ark.»
7 Och till folket blev sagt: »Dragen ut och tågen omkring staden; och den väpnade skaran skall draga framför HERRENS ark.»
8 Då nu Josua hade sagt detta till folket, drogo de sju präster som buro jubelbasunerna framför HERREN åstad och stötte i basunerna; och HERRENS förbundsark följde efter dem.
9 Och den väpnade skaran gick framför prästerna som stötte i basunerna, och den övriga hopen slutade tåget och följde efter arken, under det att man alltjämt stötte i basunerna.
10 Men Josua hade bjudit folket och sagt: »I skolen icke upphäva något härskri eller låta höra eder röst eller ens låta något ord utgå av eder mun, förrän den dag då jag säger till eder: 'Häven upp ett härskri'; då skolen I upphäva ett härskri.»
11 Och när han så hade låtit bära HERRENS ark omkring staden, runt omkring den en gång, gingo de in i lägret och stannade i lägret över natten.
12 Och följande morgon stod Josua bittida upp, och prästerna togo HERRENS ark.
13 Och de sju präster som buro de sju jubelbasunerna framför HERRENS ark gingo alltjämt och stötte i basunerna; och den väpnade skaran gick framför dem, och den övriga hopen slutade tåget och följde efter HERRENS ark, under det att man alltjämt stötte i basunerna.

16 Och när prästerna sjunde gången stötte i basunerna, sade Josua till folket: »Häven upp ett härskri, ty HERREN har givit eder staden.
17 Men staden med allt vad däri är skall givas till spillo åt HERREN; allenast skökan Rahab skall få leva, jämte alla som äro inne i hennes hus, därför att hon gömde de utskickade som vi hade sänt åstad.
18 Men tagen eder väl till vara för det tillspillogivna, så att I icke, sedan I haven givit det till spillo, ändå tagen något av det tillspillogivna och därigenom kommen Israels läger att hemfalla åt tillspillogivning, och så dragen olycka över det.
19 Allt silver och guld och allt som är av koppar eller järn skall vara helgat åt HERREN och ingå till HERRENS skatt.»
20 Då hov folket upp ett härskri, och man stötte i basunerna. Ja, när folket hörde basunljudet, hov det upp ett stort härskri; då föllo murarna på stället, och folket drog över dem in i staden, var och en rätt fram; så intogo de staden.
21 Och de gåvo till spillo allt vad som fanns i staden, både män och kvinnor, både unga och gamla, så ock oxar, får och åsnor, och slogo dem med svärdsegg.
22 Men till de båda män som hade bespejat landet sade Josua: »Gån in i skökans hus och fören kvinnan, jämte alla som tillhöra henne, ut därifrån, såsom I med ed haven lovat henne.»
23 Då gingo de unga män som hade varit där såsom spejare ditin och förde ut Rahab, jämte hennes fader och moder och hennes bröder och alla som tillhörde henne; hela hennes släkt förde de ut. Och de släppte dem utanför Israels läger.
24 Men staden med allt vad som fanns däri brände de upp i eld; allenast silvret och guldet och det som var av koppar eller järn lade de till skatten i HERRENS hus.
25 Men skökan Rahab och hennes faders hus och alla som tillhörde henne lät Josua leva, och hon fick bo bland Israels folk, intill denna dag; detta därför att hon gömde de utskickade som Josua hade sänt åstad för att bespeja Jeriko.
26 På den tiden lät Josua folket svärja denna ed: »Förbannad vare inför HERREN den man som tager sig före att åter bygga upp denna stad, Jeriko. När han lägger dess grund, må detta kosta honom hans äldste son, och när han sätter upp dess portar, må detta kosta honom hans yngste son.»
27 Och HERREN var med Josua, så att ryktet om honom gick ut över hela landet.
