The Conquest of Jericho
6 Now Jericho was strongly fortified because of the Israelites—no one leaving or entering. 2 The Lord said to Joshua, “Look, I have handed Jericho, its king, and its best soldiers over to you.(A) 3 March around the city with all the men of war, circling the city one time. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry seven ram’s-horn trumpets in front of the ark. But on the seventh day, march around the city seven times, while the priests blow the rams’ horns.(B) 5 When there is a prolonged blast of the horn and you hear its sound, have all the troops give a mighty shout. Then the city wall will collapse, and the troops will advance, each man straight ahead.”
6 So Joshua son of Nun summoned the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant and have seven priests carry seven rams’ horns in front of the ark of the Lord.” 7 He said to the troops, “Move forward, march around the city, and have the armed men go ahead of the ark of the Lord.”
8 After Joshua had spoken to the troops, seven priests carrying seven rams’ horns before the Lord moved forward and blew the rams’ horns; the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them. 9 While the rams’ horns were blowing, the armed men went in front of the priests who blew the rams’ horns, and the rear guard went behind the ark.(C) 10 But Joshua had commanded the troops, “Do not shout or let your voice be heard. Don’t let one word come out of your mouth until the time I say, ‘Shout!’ Then you are to shout.” 11 So the ark of the Lord was carried around the city, circling it once. They returned to the camp and spent the night there.[a]
12 Joshua got up early the next morning. The priests took the ark of the Lord, 13 and the seven priests carrying seven rams’ horns marched in front of the ark of the Lord. While the rams’ horns were blowing, the armed men went in front of them, and the rear guard went behind the ark of the Lord. 14 On the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.
15 Early on the seventh day, they started at dawn and marched around the city seven times in the same way. That was the only day they marched around the city seven times. 16 After the seventh time, the priests blew the rams’ horns, and Joshua said to the troops, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city. 17 But the city and everything in it are set apart to the Lord for destruction.(D) Only Rahab the prostitute and everyone with her in the house will live,(E) because she hid the messengers we sent. 18 But keep yourselves from the things set apart, or you will be set apart for destruction. If you[b] take any of those things, you will set apart the camp of Israel for destruction and make trouble for it. 19 For all the silver and gold, and the articles of bronze and iron, are dedicated to the Lord and must go into the Lord’s treasury.”(F)
20 So the troops shouted, and the rams’ horns sounded. When they heard the blast of the ram’s horn, the troops gave a great shout, and the wall collapsed.(G) The troops advanced into the city, each man straight ahead, and they captured the city. 21 They completely destroyed(H) everything in the city with the sword—every man and woman, both young and old, and every ox, sheep, and donkey.
Rahab and Her Family Spared
22 Joshua said to the two men who had scouted the land, “Go to the prostitute’s house and bring the woman out of there, and all who are with her, just as you swore to her.”(I) 23 So the young men who had scouted went in and brought out Rahab and her father, mother, brothers, and all who belonged to her. They brought out her whole family and settled them outside the camp of Israel.
24 They burned the city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lord’s house. 25 However, Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, her father’s family, and all who belonged to her, because she hid the messengers Joshua had sent to spy on Jericho, and she still lives in Israel(J) today.(K)
26 At that time Joshua imposed this curse:
The man who undertakes
the rebuilding of this city, Jericho,
is cursed before the Lord.(L)
He will lay its foundation
at the cost of his firstborn;
he will finish its gates
at the cost of his youngest.(M)
27 And the Lord was with Joshua,(N) and his fame spread throughout the land.

2 ”Jag har överlämnat Jeriko med dess kung och alla soldater åt dig”, sa Herren till Josua. 3 ”Hela armén ska gå runt staden en gång om dagen i sex dagar. 4 Sju präster ska gå framför arken och var och en av dem ska bära ett vädurshorn att blåsa i. På den sjunde dagen ska ni gå runt staden sju gånger och prästerna ska blåsa i sina horn. 5 När ni hör dem blåsa en lång utdragen ton, ska folket häva upp ett kraftigt stridsrop. Då kommer stadens murar att rasa och var och en ska kunna gå rakt in i staden.”
6 Josua, Nuns son, sammankallade prästerna och sa: ”Ta Herrens förbundsark och låt sju präster bära vädurshornen framför den!” 7 Och till folket sa han: ”Gå, tåga runt staden! De beväpnade männen ska gå framför Herrens ark.”
8 Efter att Josua talat till folket gick de sju prästerna med de sju vädurshornen framför Herren och blåste i hornen. Herrens förbundsark följde efter dem. 9 Den beväpnade styrkan gick framför prästerna som blåste i hornen och eftertruppen följde efter arken medan man blåste i hornen.
10 ”Ni måste vara alldeles tysta”, sa Josua till folket. ”Ni får inte ge ifrån er ett enda ljud förrän jag befaller er att ropa högt. Då ska ni ge upp ett stridsrop!”
11 Då lät han Herrens ark bäras runt staden en enda gång och därefter vände alla tillbaka till lägret för natten. 12 Josua gick upp tidigt följande dag och prästerna tog Herrens ark. 13 De sju prästerna som bar de sju vädurshornen gick framför Herrens ark och blåste i sina horn. Den beväpnade styrkan gick framför dem och eftertruppen kom efter Herrens ark, medan man hela tiden blåste i hornen. 14 De gick en gång runt staden på den andra dagen och vände sedan tillbaka. Så höll de på i sex dagar.
15 I gryningen den sjunde dagen började de sin vandring som vanligt, men nu gick de runt staden sju gånger. 16 Under det sjunde varvet blåste prästerna en lång utdragen ton i hornen, och Josua sa till folket: ”Ropa nu högt, för Herren har gett er staden! 17 Förinta staden och allt som finns där, det ska vigas åt Herren, men låt den prostituerade Rachav och dem som finns i hennes hus leva, för hon skyddade våra spioner. 18 Ni ska hålla er borta från det som är vigt åt förintelse, så att ni inte viger något åt förintelse och tar av det. Då viger ni också Israels läger åt förintelse och drar olycka över det. 19 Allt silver och guld och sådant som är gjort av koppar eller järn ska avskiljas åt Herren och läggas i hans skattkammare.”
20 När den långa tonen från vädurshornen ljöd, ropade folket så mycket de orkade. Då rasade murarna, och folket trängde in i staden och intog den. 21 De vigde allt levande åt förintelse, kvinnor och män, unga och gamla, oxar, får och åsnor, och slog dem med svärd.
Rachav och hennes familj räddas
22 Josua sa till de båda männen som varit i landet och spionerat: ”Gå till den prostituerade kvinnans hus och för ut henne och hennes närmaste, så som ni med ed lovat henne!”
23 De unga männen, spionerna, gick och förde ut Rachav och hennes föräldrar och bröder och andra släktingar. Man förde hela hennes släkt till en plats utanför Israels läger. 24 Efter det brände de hela staden och allt som fanns där, men silvret och guldet och allt av järn och koppar fördes till skattkammaren i Herrens hus. 25 Rachav, den prostituerade kvinnan med hennes familj och släkt, räddades av Josua, eftersom hon gömde spionerna som Josua hade sänt till Jeriko. Hon fick bo bland israeliterna och där bor hennes ättlingar än idag.[a]
26 Vid den tiden uttalade Josua en ed:
”Förbannad inför Herren vare den man
som företar sig att bygga upp denna stad, Jeriko, på nytt.
När han lägger dess grund,
ska det kosta honom hans förstfödde son,
och när han sätter upp dess portar,
ska det kosta honom hans yngste son.”
27 Herren var med Josua och hans namn blev berömt vida omkring.

6 Now the gates of Jericho(A) were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.
2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered(B) Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns(C) in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.(D) 5 When you hear them sound a long blast(E) on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout;(F) then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”
6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.”(G) 7 And he ordered the army, “Advance(H)! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark(I) of the Lord.”
8 When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them. 9 The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard(J) followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had commanded the army, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!(K)” 11 So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there.
12 Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13 The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.
15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times.(L) 16 The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city!(M) 17 The city and all that is in it are to be devoted[a](N) to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute(O) and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid(P) the spies we sent. 18 But keep away from the devoted things,(Q) so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction(R) and bring trouble(S) on it. 19 All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(T) are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.”
20 When the trumpets sounded,(U) the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout,(V) the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.(W) 21 They devoted(X) the city to the Lord and destroyed(Y) with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.
22 Joshua said to the two men(Z) who had spied out(AA) the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.(AB)” 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her.(AC) They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.
24 Then they burned the whole city(AD) and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(AE) into the treasury of the Lord’s house.(AF) 25 But Joshua spared(AG) Rahab the prostitute,(AH) with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho(AI)—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.
26 At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath:(AJ) “Cursed(AK) before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:
“At the cost of his firstborn son
he will lay its foundations;
at the cost of his youngest
he will set up its gates.”(AL)
27 So the Lord was with Joshua,(AM) and his fame spread(AN) throughout the land.
