So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord.” And he said to the people, “Go forward. March round the city and let (A)the armed men pass on before the ark of the Lord.”

And just as Joshua had commanded the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the Lord went forward, blowing the trumpets, with the ark of the covenant of the Lord following them. The armed men were walking before the priests who were blowing the trumpets, and the (B)rearguard was walking after the ark, while the trumpets blew continually. 10 But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.” 11 So he caused the ark of the Lord to circle the city, going round it once. And they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp.

12 Then Joshua rose early in the morning, and (C)the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13 And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord walked on, and they blew the trumpets continually. And the armed men were walking before them, and the rearguard was walking after the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets blew continually. 14 And the second day they marched round the city once, and returned into the camp. So they did for six days.

15 On the seventh day they rose early, at the dawn of day, and marched around the city in the same manner seven times. It was only on that day that they marched around the city seven times. 16 And at the seventh time, when the priests had blown the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city. 17 And the city and all that is within it shall be (D)devoted to the Lord for destruction.[a] Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall live, because she (E)hid the messengers whom we sent. 18 But you, keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction, lest when you have devoted them you take any of the devoted things and make the camp of Israel (F)a thing for destruction and (G)bring trouble upon it. 19 But all silver and gold, and every vessel of bronze and iron, are holy to the Lord; they shall go into the treasury of the Lord.” 20 So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted a great shout, and (H)the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they captured the city. 21 Then they (I)devoted all in the city to destruction, both men and women, young and old, oxen, sheep, and donkeys, with the edge of the sword.

22 But to the two men who had spied out the land, Joshua said, “Go into the prostitute's house and bring out from there the woman and all who belong to her, (J)as you swore to her.” 23 So the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab and (K)her father and mother and brothers and all who belonged to her. And they brought all her relatives and put them outside the camp of Israel. 24 And they burned the city with fire, and everything in it. (L)Only the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord. 25 But Rahab the prostitute and her father's household and all who belonged to her, Joshua saved alive. And (M)she has lived in Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

26 Joshua laid an oath on them at that time, saying, (N)“Cursed before the Lord be the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho.

“At the cost of his firstborn shall he
    lay its foundation,
and at the cost of his youngest son
    shall he set up its gates.”

27 (O)So the Lord was with Joshua, and (P)his fame was in all the land.

Your Name, O Lord, Endures For Ever

135 (A)Praise the Lord!
Praise the name of the Lord,
    give praise, O (B)servants of the Lord,
who (C)stand in the house of the Lord,
    in (D)the courts of the house of our God!
Praise the Lord, for (E)the Lord is good;
    sing to his name, (F)for it is pleasant![a]
For the Lord has (G)chosen Jacob for himself,
    Israel as his (H)own possession.
For I know that (I)the Lord is great,
    and that our Lord is above all gods.
(J)Whatever the Lord pleases, he does,
    in heaven and on earth,
    in the seas and all deeps.
(K)He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth,
    who (L)makes lightnings for the rain
    and brings forth the wind from his (M)storehouses.
He it was who (N)struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
    both of man and of beast;
who in your midst, O Egypt,
    sent (O)signs and wonders
    against Pharaoh and all his servants;
10 (P)who struck down many nations
    and killed mighty kings,
11 (Q)Sihon, king of the Amorites,
    and (R)Og, king of Bashan,
    and (S)all the kingdoms of Canaan,
12 and (T)gave their land as a heritage,
    a heritage to his people Israel.
13 (U)Your name, O Lord, endures for ever,
    (V)your renown,[b] O Lord, throughout all ages.
14 (W)For the Lord will vindicate his people
    and (X)have compassion on his servants.
15 (Y)The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
    the work of human hands.
16 They have mouths, but do not speak;
    they have eyes, but do not see;
17 they have ears, but do not hear,
    nor is there any breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them become like them,
    so do all who trust in them!
19 (Z)O house of Israel, bless the Lord!
    O house of Aaron, bless the Lord!
20 O house of Levi, bless the Lord!
    You who fear the Lord, bless the Lord!
21 Blessed be the Lord (AA)from Zion,
    he who (AB)dwells in Jerusalem!
(AC)Praise the Lord!

    for his steadfast love endures for ever;
25 he who (V)gives food to all flesh,

The Humble and Contrite in Spirit

66 (A)Thus says the Lord:
(B)“Heaven is my throne,
    and the earth is my footstool;
what is the house that you would build for me,
    and what is the place of my rest?
(C)All these things my hand has made,
    and so all these things came to be,
declares the Lord.
(D)But this is the one to whom I will look:
    he who is humble and contrite in spirit
    and trembles at my word.
(E)“He who slaughters an ox is like one who kills a man;
    he who sacrifices a lamb, like one who breaks a dog's neck;
he who presents a grain offering, like one who offers (F)pig's blood;
    he who makes a memorial offering of frankincense, like one who blesses an idol.
(G)These have chosen their own ways,
    and their soul delights in their abominations;
(H)I also will choose harsh treatment for them
    and bring (I)their fears upon them,
(J)because when I called, no one answered,
    when I spoke, they did not listen;
(K)but they did what was evil in my eyes
    and chose that in which I did not delight.”
Hear the word of the Lord,
    you who tremble at his word:
“Your brothers who hate you
    and cast you out for my name's sake
have said, (L)‘Let the Lord be glorified,
    that we may see your joy’;
    but it is they who shall be put to shame.
“The sound of an uproar from the city!
    A sound from the temple!
The sound of the Lord,
    (M)rendering recompense to his enemies!

Rejoice with Jerusalem

(N)“Before she was in labour
    she gave birth;
before her pain came upon her
    she delivered a son.
Who has heard such a thing?
    Who has seen such things?
Shall a land be born in one day?
    Shall a nation be brought forth in one moment?
For (O)as soon as Zion was in labour
    she brought forth her children.
Shall I bring to the point of birth and not cause to bring forth?”
    says the Lord;
“shall I, who cause to bring forth, shut the womb?”
    says your God.
10 (P)“Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,
    all you who love her;
rejoice with her in joy,
    all you who mourn over her;
11 that you may nurse and be satisfied
    from her consoling breast;
that you may drink deeply with delight
    from her glorious abundance.”[a]
12 For thus says the Lord:
(Q)“Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,
    and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
and (R)you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip,
    and bounced upon her knees.
13 As one whom his mother comforts,
    so (S)I will comfort you;
    you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
14 You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice;
    (T)your bones shall flourish like the grass;
and (U)the hand of the Lord shall be known to his servants,
    and he shall show his indignation against his enemies.

Final Judgement and Glory of the Lord

15 “For behold, (V)the Lord will come in fire,
    and (W)his chariots like the whirlwind,
to render his anger in fury,
    and his rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For (X)by fire (Y)will the Lord enter into judgement,
    and by his sword, with all flesh;
    and those slain by the Lord shall be many.

17 (Z)“Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, (AA)eating pig's flesh and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together, declares the Lord.

18 “For I know[b] their works and their thoughts, and the time is coming[c] (AB)to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and shall see my glory, 19 and I will set a sign among them. And from them (AC)I will send survivors to the nations, to (AD)Tarshish, (AE)Pul, and (AF)Lud, who draw the bow, to (AG)Tubal and (AH)Javan, (AI)to the coastlands far away, (AJ)that have not heard my fame or seen my glory. And they shall declare my glory among the nations. 20 (AK)And they shall bring all your brothers from all the nations (AL)as an offering to the Lord, on horses and in chariots and in litters and on mules and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the Lord, just as the Israelites bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the Lord. 21 (AM)And some of them also I will take for priests and for Levites, says the Lord.

22 “For as (AN)the new heavens and the new earth
    that I make
shall remain before me, says the Lord,
    so (AO)shall your offspring and your name remain.
23 (AP)From new moon to new moon,
    and from Sabbath to Sabbath,
all flesh shall come to worship before me,
declares the Lord.

24 “And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For (AQ)their worm shall not die, (AR)their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”
