Footnotes

  1. 6:25 The genealogy of Jesus in Matthew (1:2–16) presents Rahab the prostitute as the wife of Salmon (1:5) and so the ancestor of David (Ru 4:18–22) and of Jesus.
  2. 6:26 At the cost of his firstborn…its gates: this curse was fulfilled when Hiel rebuilt Jericho as a fortified city during the reign of Ahab, king of Israel; cf. 1 Kgs 16:34.

25 But Joshua spared(A) Rahab the prostitute,(B) with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho(C)—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.

26 At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath:(D) “Cursed(E) before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:

“At the cost of his firstborn son
    he will lay its foundations;
at the cost of his youngest
    he will set up its gates.”(F)

27 So the Lord was with Joshua,(G) and his fame spread(H) throughout the land.
