The New Generation Circumcised

As soon as all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites (A)who were by the sea, (B)heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over, their hearts (C)melted and (D)there was no longer any spirit in them because of the people of Israel.

At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make (E)flint knives and circumcise the sons of Israel a second time.” So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the sons of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth.[a] And this is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: (F)all the males of the people who came out of Egypt, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way after they had come out of Egypt. Though all the people who came out had been circumcised, yet all the people who were born on the way in the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt had not been circumcised. For the people of Israel walked (G)forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, the men of war who came out of Egypt, perished, because they did not obey the voice of the Lord; the Lord (H)swore to them that he would not let them see the land that the Lord had sworn to their fathers to give to us, (I)a land flowing with milk and honey. So it was (J)their children, whom he raised up in their place, that Joshua circumcised. For they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way.

When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they remained in their places in the camp until they were healed. And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the (K)reproach of Egypt from you.” And so the name of that place is called (L)Gilgal[b] to this day.

First Passover in Canaan

10 While the people of Israel were encamped at Gilgal, they kept the Passover (M)on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening on the plains of Jericho. 11 And the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. 12 And (N)the manna ceased the day after they ate of the produce of the land. And there was no longer manna for the people of Israel, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

The Commander of the Lord's Army

13 When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, (O)a man was standing before him (P)with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?” 14 And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come.” And Joshua (Q)fell on his face to the earth and worshipped and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?” 15 And the commander of the Lord's army said to Joshua, (R)“Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

The Fall of Jericho

Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in. And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, (S)I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valour. You shall march round the city, all the men of war going round the city once. Thus shall you do for six days. Seven priests shall bear seven (T)trumpets of (U)rams' horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march round the city seven times, and (V)the priests shall blow the trumpets. And when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat,[c] and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.”

The Lord Has Chosen Zion

A Song of (A)Ascents.

132 Remember, O Lord, in David's favour,
    all (B)the hardships he endured,
how he swore to the Lord
    and (C)vowed to (D)the Mighty One of Jacob,
“I will not enter my house
    or get into my bed,
I will not (E)give sleep to my eyes
    or slumber to my eyelids,
until I (F)find a place for the Lord,
    a dwelling place for (G)the Mighty One of Jacob.”
Behold, we heard of it in (H)Ephrathah;
    we found it in (I)the fields of Jaar.
“Let us go to his dwelling place;
    let us (J)worship at his (K)footstool!”
(L)Arise, O Lord, and go to your (M)resting-place,
    you and the ark of your (N)might.
Let your (O)priests be (P)clothed with righteousness,
    and let your (Q)saints shout for joy.
10 For the sake of your servant David,
    (R)do not turn away the face of (S)your anointed one.
11 (T)The Lord swore to David a sure oath
    (U)from which he will not turn back:
(V)“One of the sons of your body[a]
    I will set on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant
    and my testimonies that I shall teach them,
their sons also for ever
    shall (W)sit on your throne.”
13 For the Lord has (X)chosen Zion;
    he has (Y)desired it for his dwelling place:
14 “This is my (Z)resting-place for ever;
    here I will (AA)dwell, for I have desired it.
15 I will abundantly (AB)bless her provisions;
    I will (AC)satisfy her poor with bread.
16 Her (AD)priests I will clothe with salvation,
    and her (AE)saints will shout for joy.
17 There I will make (AF)a horn to sprout for David;
    I have prepared (AG)a lamp for (AH)my anointed.
18 His enemies I will (AI)clothe with shame,
    but on him his crown will shine.”

When Brothers Dwell in Unity

A Song of (AJ)Ascents. Of David.

133 Behold, how good and pleasant it is
    when (AK)brothers dwell in unity![b]
It is like the precious (AL)oil on (AM)the head,
    running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
    running down on (AN)the collar of his robes!
It is like (AO)the dew of (AP)Hermon,
    which falls on (AQ)the mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord (AR)has commanded the blessing,
    life for evermore.

Come, Bless the Lord

A Song of (AS)Ascents.

134 Come, bless the Lord, all you (AT)servants of the Lord,
    who (AU)stand (AV)by night in the house of the Lord!
(AW)Lift up your hands to (AX)the holy place
    and bless the Lord!
May the Lord (AY)bless you (AZ)from Zion,
    he who (BA)made heaven and earth!

Judgement and Salvation

65 (A)I was ready to be sought by (B)those who did not ask for me;
    I was ready to be found by those who did not seek me.
I said, “Here am I, here am I”,
    to a nation that was not called by[a] my name.
(C)I spread out my hands all the day
    to a rebellious people,
who walk in a way that is not good,
    following their own devices;
a people who provoke me
    to my face continually,
(D)sacrificing in gardens
    and making offerings on bricks;
who sit in tombs,
    and spend the night in secret places;
(E)who eat pig's flesh,
    and broth of tainted meat is in their vessels;
who say, “Keep to yourself,
    do not come near me, for I am too holy for you.”
(F)These are a smoke in my nostrils,
    a fire that burns all the day.
Behold, (G)it is written before me:
    (H)“I will not keep silent, but I will repay;
(I)I will indeed repay into their bosom
    both your iniquities (J)and your fathers' iniquities together,
says the Lord;
(K)because they made offerings on the mountains
    (L)and insulted me on the hills,
I will measure into their bosom
    payment for their former deeds.”[b]
Thus says the Lord:
(M)“As the new wine is found in the cluster,
    and they say, ‘Do not destroy it,
    for there is a blessing in it’,
so I will do for my servants' sake,
    (N)and not destroy them all.
(O)I will bring forth offspring from Jacob,
    and from Judah possessors of my mountains;
my chosen shall possess it,
    and my servants shall dwell there.
10 (P)Sharon shall become a pasture for flocks,
    and (Q)the Valley of Achor a place for herds to lie down,
    for my people (R)who have sought me.
11 But (S)you who forsake the Lord,
    who forget (T)my holy mountain,
who (U)set a table for Fortune
    and (V)fill cups of mixed wine for Destiny,
12 I will destine you to the sword,
    and all of you shall bow down to the slaughter,
(W)because, when I called, you did not answer;
    when I spoke, you did not listen,
(X)but you did what was evil in my eyes
    and chose what I did not delight in.”
13 Therefore thus says the Lord God:
“Behold, (Y)my servants shall eat,
    but you shall be hungry;
behold, my servants shall drink,
    but you shall be thirsty;
behold, my servants shall rejoice,
    but you shall be put to shame;
14 behold, (Z)my servants shall sing for gladness of heart,
    but you shall cry out for pain of heart
    and shall wail for breaking of spirit.
15 You shall leave your name to (AA)my chosen (AB)for a curse,
    and the Lord God will put you to death,
    but his servants (AC)he will call by another name.
16 So that he who (AD)blesses himself in the land
    shall bless himself by (AE)the God of truth,
and he who takes an oath in the land
    shall swear by (AF)the God of truth;
(AG)because the former troubles are forgotten
    and are hidden from my eyes.

New Heavens and a New Earth

17 “For behold, (AH)I create new heavens
    and a new earth,
and the former things shall not be remembered
    or come into mind.
18 But be glad and rejoice for ever
    in that which I create;
for behold, (AI)I create Jerusalem to be a joy,
    and her people to be a gladness.
19 (AJ)I will rejoice in Jerusalem
    and be glad in my people;
(AK)no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping
    and the cry of distress.
20 No more shall there be in it
    an infant who lives but a few days,
    or an old man who does not fill out his days,
for (AL)the young man shall die a hundred years old,
    and (AM)the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed.
21 (AN)They shall build houses and inhabit them;
    they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 (AO)They shall not build and another inhabit;
    they shall not plant and another eat;
(AP)for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be,
    and my chosen shall long enjoy[c] the work of their hands.
23 (AQ)They shall not labour in vain
    (AR)or bear children for calamity,[d]
for (AS)they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the Lord,
    and their descendants with them.
24 (AT)Before they call I will answer;
    (AU)while they are yet speaking I will hear.
25 (AV)The wolf and the lamb shall graze together;
    the lion shall eat straw like the ox,
    and (AW)dust shall be the serpent's food.
(AX)They shall not hurt or destroy
    in all my holy mountain,”
says the Lord.
