The Memorial Stones
4 And it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed (A)over the Jordan, that the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying: 2 (B)“Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from every tribe, 3 and command them, saying, ‘Take for yourselves twelve stones from here, out of the midst of the Jordan, from the place where (C)the priests’ feet stood firm. You shall carry them over with you and leave them in (D)the lodging place where you lodge tonight.’ ”
4 Then Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the children of Israel, one man from every tribe; 5 and Joshua said to them: “Cross over before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the Jordan, and each one of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, 6 that this may be (E)a sign among you (F)when your children ask in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ 7 Then you shall answer them that (G)the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for (H)a memorial to the children of Israel forever.”
8 And the children of Israel did so, just as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones from the midst of the Jordan, as the Lord had spoken to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them to the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. 9 Then Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood; and they are there to this day.
10 So the priests who bore the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished that the Lord had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua; and the people hurried and crossed over. 11 Then it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed over, that the (I)ark of the Lord and the priests crossed over in the presence of the people. 12 And (J)the men of Reuben, the men of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses had spoken to them. 13 About forty thousand [a]prepared for war crossed over before the Lord for battle, to the plains of Jericho. 14 On that day the Lord (K)exalted[b] Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they had feared Moses, all the days of his life.
15 Then the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying, 16 “Command the priests who bear (L)the ark of the Testimony to come up from the Jordan.” 17 Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, “Come up from the Jordan.” 18 And it came to pass, when the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord had come from the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet touched the dry land, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place (M)and overflowed all its banks as before.
19 Now the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they camped (N)in Gilgal on the east border of Jericho. 20 And (O)those twelve stones which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal. 21 Then he spoke to the children of Israel, saying: (P)“When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What are these stones?’ 22 then you shall let your children know, saying, (Q)‘Israel crossed over this Jordan on (R)dry land’; 23 for the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, (S)which He dried up before us until we had crossed over, 24 (T)that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of the Lord, that it is (U)mighty, that you may (V)fear the Lord your God [c]forever.”

Las doce piedras del Jordán
4 Cuando toda la gente terminó de cruzar el Jordán, el Señor le dijo a Josué:
2 «Elijan ustedes de entre el pueblo doce hombres, uno por cada tribu, 3 y díganles que tomen doce piedras de en medio del Jordán, de donde están parados los sacerdotes, y que se las lleven y las pongan donde van a pasar la noche.»
4 Josué llamó entonces a los doce hombres que había escogido de entre los hijos de Israel, uno por cada tribu, 5 y les dijo:
«Pasen ahora delante del arca del Señor nuestro Dios, hasta la mitad del Jordán, y tome cada uno de ustedes una piedra y échesela al hombro, una por cada tribu de los hijos de Israel. 6 Cada una de ellas será una señal. Y el día de mañana, cuando los hijos les pregunten a sus padres qué significan estas piedras, 7 ellos les responderán: “Cuando el pueblo cruzó el Jordán, las aguas del río se partieron en dos delante del arca del pacto del Señor. Así que estas piedras son para que los hijos de Israel recuerden siempre lo que aquí pasó.”»
8 Los hijos de Israel hicieron lo que Josué les mandó, tal y como el Señor se lo había dicho a Josué: tomaron doce piedras de en medio del Jordán, conforme al número de las tribus de los hijos de Israel, y las llevaron al lugar donde iban a acampar, y allí las pusieron. 9 Además, Josué tomó otras doce piedras de en medio del Jordán, de donde los sacerdotes que llevaban el arca del pacto plantaron sus pies, y las levantó como monumento. Hasta el día de hoy las piedras están allí. 10 Los sacerdotes que llevaban el arca se pararon en medio del Jordán hasta que el pueblo hizo todo lo que el Señor le había ordenado a Josué, cumpliendo así con todo lo que Moisés le había mandado hacer. El pueblo se apresuró a cruzar el río.
11 En cuanto el pueblo todo terminó de cruzar, cruzaron también el arca del Señor y los sacerdotes, en presencia del pueblo. 12 Delante de Israel pasaron también los hijos de Rubén y de Gad y la media tribu de Manasés, que iban armados en obediencia a lo que Moisés les había dicho. 13 Eran como cuarenta mil hombres armados y listos para la guerra, Pasaron delante del Señor y se dirigieron a la llanura de Jericó. 14 Ese día el Señor le dio plena autoridad a Josué delante de todo Israel. Y ellos lo respetaron durante toda su vida, como antes habían respetado a Moisés.
15 El Señor le dijo a Josué:
16 «Ordena a los sacerdotes que llevan el arca del testimonio, que salgan del Jordán.»
17 Y Josué les dio a los sacerdotes la orden de salir del Jordán, 18 y cuando los sacerdotes que llevaban el arca del pacto del Señor salieron de en medio del Jordán, y pisaron tierra seca, las aguas volvieron a su cauce y siguieron corriendo y desbordándose como antes.
19 El pueblo cruzó el Jordán el día diez del mes primero, y acampó en Gilgal, en el extremo oriental de Jericó. 20 Allí en Gilgal, Josué levantó las doce piedras que habían tomado del Jordán, 21 y les habló a los hijos de Israel de esta manera:
«El día de mañana, cuando los hijos pregunten a sus padres qué es lo que significan estas piedras, 22 ustedes les harán saber que Israel cruzó este río sin mojarse los pies, 23 porque el Señor nuestro Dios secó el río mientras nosotros lo cruzábamos, tal y como lo hizo con el Mar Rojo, que también lo secó delante de nosotros, hasta que lo cruzamos. 24 Lo hizo así, para que todos los pueblos de la tierra sepan que la mano del Señor es poderosa, y para que ustedes honren siempre al Señor nuestro Dios.»

4 When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan,(A) the Lord said to Joshua, 2 “Choose twelve men(B) from among the people, one from each tribe, 3 and tell them to take up twelve stones(C) from the middle of the Jordan,(D) from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.(E)”
4 So Joshua called together the twelve men(F) he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, 5 and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan.(G) Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 6 to serve as a sign(H) among you. In the future, when your children(I) ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’(J) 7 tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off(K) before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial(L) to the people of Israel forever.”
8 So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones(M) from the middle of the Jordan,(N) according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the Lord had told Joshua;(O) and they carried them over with them to their camp, where they put them down. 9 Joshua set up the twelve stones(P) that had been[a] in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.(Q)
10 Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything the Lord had commanded Joshua was done by the people, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried over, 11 and as soon as all of them had crossed, the ark of the Lord and the priests came to the other side while the people watched. 12 The men of Reuben,(R) Gad(S) and the half-tribe of Manasseh(T) crossed over, ready for battle, in front of the Israelites,(U) as Moses had directed them.(V) 13 About forty thousand armed for battle(W) crossed over(X) before the Lord to the plains of Jericho for war.
14 That day the Lord exalted(Y) Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they stood in awe of him all the days of his life, just as they had stood in awe of Moses.
15 Then the Lord said to Joshua, 16 “Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant law(Z) to come up out of the Jordan.”
17 So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up out of the Jordan.”
18 And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place(AA) and ran at flood stage(AB) as before.
19 On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal(AC) on the eastern border of Jericho. 20 And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones(AD) they had taken out of the Jordan. 21 He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’(AE) 22 tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’(AF) 23 For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea[b] when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over.(AG) 24 He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know(AH) that the hand of the Lord is powerful(AI) and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.(AJ)”

Twelve Memorial Stones from the Jordan
4 When all the nation had finished passing (A)over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, 2 (B)“Take twelve men from the people, from each tribe a man, 3 and command them, saying, ‘Take (C)twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan, from the very place (D)where the priests' feet stood firmly, and bring them over with you and lay them down in (E)the place where you lodge tonight.’” 4 Then Joshua called the twelve men from the people of Israel, whom he had appointed, a man from each tribe. 5 And Joshua said to them, “Pass on before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take up each of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, 6 that this may be a sign among you. (F)When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ 7 then you shall tell them that (G)the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel (H)a memorial forever.”
8 And the people of Israel did just as Joshua commanded and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, just as the Lord told Joshua. And they carried them over with them to the place where they lodged and laid them down[a] there. 9 And Joshua set up[b] twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, (I)in the place where the feet of the priests bearing the ark of the covenant had stood; and they are there to this day. 10 For the priests bearing the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished that the Lord commanded Joshua to tell the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua.
The people passed over in haste. 11 And when all the people had finished passing over, the ark of the Lord and the priests passed over before the people. 12 The sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh (J)passed over armed before the people of Israel, as Moses had told them. 13 About 40,000 ready for war passed over before the Lord for battle, to the plains of Jericho. 14 On that day the Lord (K)exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they stood in awe of him just as they had stood in awe of Moses, all the days of his life.
15 And the Lord said to Joshua, 16 “Command the priests bearing (L)the ark of the testimony to come up out of the Jordan.” 17 So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up out of the Jordan.” 18 And when the priests bearing the ark of the covenant of the Lord came up from the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up on dry ground, the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and overflowed all its banks, (M)as before.
19 The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they encamped at (N)Gilgal on the east border of Jericho. 20 And (O)those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal. 21 And he said to the people of Israel, (P)“When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22 then you shall let your children know, (Q)‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.’ 23 For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, (R)which he dried up for us until we passed over, 24 (S)so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is (T)mighty, that you may (U)fear the Lord your God forever.”[c]
