Joshua 3-4
New King James Version
Israel Crosses the Jordan
3Â Then Joshua rose early in the morning; and they set out (A)from [a]Acacia Grove and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they crossed over. 2Â So it was, (B)after three days, that the officers went through the camp; 3Â and they commanded the people, saying, (C)âWhen you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, (D)and the priests, the Levites, [b]bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it. 4Â (E)Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you must go, for you have not passed this way before.â
5Â And Joshua said to the people, (F)âSanctify[c] yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.â 6Â Then Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, (G)âTake up the ark of the covenant and cross over before the people.â
So they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people.
7Â And the Lord said to Joshua, âThis day I will begin to (H)exalt[d] you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, (I)as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. 8Â You shall command (J)the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, saying, âWhen you have come to the edge of the water of the Jordan, (K)you shall stand in the Jordan.â â
9Â So Joshua said to the children of Israel, âCome here, and hear the words of the Lord your God.â 10Â And Joshua said, âBy this you shall know that (L)the living God is among you, and that He will without fail (M)drive out from before you the (N)Canaanites and the Hittites and the Hivites and the Perizzites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Jebusites: 11Â Behold, the ark of the covenant of (O)the Lord of all the earth is crossing over before you into the Jordan. 12Â Now therefore, (P)take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man from every tribe. 13Â And it shall come to pass, (Q)as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the Lord, (R)the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, the waters that come down from upstream, and they (S)shall stand as a heap.â
14Â So it was, when the people set out from their camp to cross over the Jordan, with the priests bearing the (T)ark of the covenant before the people, 15Â and as those who bore the ark came to the Jordan, and (U)the feet of the priests who bore the ark dipped in the edge of the water (for the (V)Jordan overflows all its banks (W)during the whole time of harvest), 16Â that the waters which came down from upstream stood still, and rose in a heap very far away [e]at Adam, the city that is beside (X)Zaretan. So the waters that went down (Y)into the Sea of the Arabah, (Z)the Salt Sea, failed, and were cut off; and the people crossed over opposite Jericho. 17Â Then the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; (AA)and all Israel crossed over on dry ground, until all the people had crossed completely over the Jordan.
The Memorial Stones
4Â And it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed (AB)over the Jordan, that the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying: 2Â (AC)âTake for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from every tribe, 3Â and command them, saying, âTake for yourselves twelve stones from here, out of the midst of the Jordan, from the place where (AD)the priestsâ feet stood firm. You shall carry them over with you and leave them in (AE)the lodging place where you lodge tonight.â â
4Â Then Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the children of Israel, one man from every tribe; 5Â and Joshua said to them: âCross over before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the Jordan, and each one of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, 6Â that this may be (AF)a sign among you (AG)when your children ask in time to come, saying, âWhat do these stones mean to you?â 7Â Then you shall answer them that (AH)the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for (AI)a memorial to the children of Israel forever.â
8Â And the children of Israel did so, just as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones from the midst of the Jordan, as the Lord had spoken to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them to the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. 9Â Then Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood; and they are there to this day.
10Â So the priests who bore the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished that the Lord had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua; and the people hurried and crossed over. 11Â Then it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed over, that the (AJ)ark of the Lord and the priests crossed over in the presence of the people. 12Â And (AK)the men of Reuben, the men of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses had spoken to them. 13Â About forty thousand [f]prepared for war crossed over before the Lord for battle, to the plains of Jericho. 14Â On that day the Lord (AL)exalted[g] Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they had feared Moses, all the days of his life.
15Â Then the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying, 16Â âCommand the priests who bear (AM)the ark of the Testimony to come up from the Jordan.â 17Â Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, âCome up from the Jordan.â 18Â And it came to pass, when the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord had come from the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priestsâ feet touched the dry land, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place (AN)and overflowed all its banks as before.
19Â Now the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they camped (AO)in Gilgal on the east border of Jericho. 20Â And (AP)those twelve stones which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal. 21Â Then he spoke to the children of Israel, saying: (AQ)âWhen your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, âWhat are these stones?â 22Â then you shall let your children know, saying, (AR)âIsrael crossed over this Jordan on (AS)dry landâ; 23Â for the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, (AT)which He dried up before us until we had crossed over, 24Â (AU)that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of the Lord, that it is (AV)mighty, that you may (AW)fear the Lord your God [h]forever.â

Israel Crosses the Jordan
3Â Then Joshua got up early in the morning; and he and all the sons of Israel set out from (A)Shittim and came to the Jordan, and they spent the night there before they crossed. 2Â Then (B)at the end of three days the officers went through the midst of the camp; 3Â and they commanded the people, saying, âWhen you see the (C)ark of the covenant of the Lord your God with the Levitical priests carrying it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it. 4Â However, there shall be a distance between you and it of about [a]two thousand cubits by measurement. Do not come near it, so that you may know the way by which you shall go, for you have not passed this way before.â
5Â Then Joshua said to the people, â(D)Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do miracles among you.â 6Â And Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, âTake up the ark of the covenant and cross over ahead of the people.â So they took up the ark of the covenant and went ahead of the people.
7Â Now the Lord said to Joshua, âThis day I will begin to (E)exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so that they will know that just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you. 8Â So you shall command the priests who are carrying the ark of the covenant, saying, âWhen you come to the edge of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.ââ 9Â Then Joshua said to the sons of Israel, âCome here, and hear the words of the Lord your God.â 10Â And Joshua said, âBy this you will know that (F)the living God is among you, and that He will assuredly (G)drive out from you the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Hivite, the Perizzite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, and the Jebusite. 11Â Behold, the ark of the covenant of (H)the Lord of all the earth is crossing over ahead of you into the Jordan. 12Â Now then, (I)take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man for each tribe. 13Â And it will come about when the soles of the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan will be cut off, that is, the waters which are [b]flowing down from above; and they will (J)stand in one heap.â
14Â So when the people set out from their tents to cross the Jordan, with the priests carrying (K)the ark of the covenant before the people, 15Â and when those who were carrying the ark came up to the Jordan and the feet of the priests carrying the ark [c]stepped down into the edge of the water (for the (L)Jordan overflows all its banks all the days of harvest), 16Â then (M)the waters which were [d]flowing down from above stood and rose up in (N)one heap, a great distance away at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those which were [e]flowing down toward the sea of the (O)Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off. So the people crossed opposite Jericho. 17Â And the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm (P)on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan while all Israel crossed on dry ground, until all the nation had finished crossing the Jordan.
Memorial Stones from the Jordan
4Â Now when the entire nation had finished crossing the (Q)Jordan, the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying, 2Â â(R)Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe, 3Â and command them, saying, âTake up for yourselves twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priestsâ feet are standing firmly, and carry them over with you and lay them down in (S)the encampment where you will spend the night.ââ 4Â So Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of Israel, one man from each tribe; 5Â and Joshua said to them, â[f]Cross again to the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel. 6Â [g]This shall be a sign among you; (T)when your children ask [h]later, saying, âWhat do these stones mean to you?â 7Â then you shall say to them, âThat the (U)waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.â So these stones shall become a (V)memorial to the sons of Israel forever.â
8Â So the sons of Israel did exactly as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, just as the Lord spoke to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel; and they carried them over with them to (W)the encampment and put them down there. 9Â Then Joshua set up twelve (X)stones in the middle of the Jordan at the place where the feet of the priests who carried the ark of the covenant were standing, and they are there to this day. 10Â For the priests who carried the ark were standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything was completed that the Lord had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua. And the people hurried and crossed; 11Â and when all the people had finished crossing, then the ark of the Lord and the priests crossed in front of the people. 12Â (Y)The sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over in battle formation before the sons of Israel, just as Moses had spoken to them; 13Â about forty thousand equipped for war, crossed for battle before the Lord to the desert plains of Jericho.
14Â (Z)On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, so that they [i]revered him, just as they had [j]revered Moses all the days of his life.
15Â Now the Lord said to [k]Joshua, 16Â âCommand the priests who carry (AA)the ark of the testimony that they come up from the Jordan.â 17Â So Joshua commanded the priests, saying, âCome up from the Jordan.â 18Â It came about when the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord had come up from the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of the priestsâ feet were [l]lifted up to the dry ground, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place, and went over all its banks as before.
19Â Now the people came up from the Jordan on the (AB)tenth of the first month and camped at Gilgal, on the eastern edge of Jericho. 20Â As for [m](AC)those twelve stones which they had taken from the Jordan, Joshua set them up (AD)at Gilgal. 21Â And he said to the sons of [n]Israel, âWhen your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, âWhat are these stones?â 22Â then you shall inform your children, saying, âIsrael crossed this Jordan on (AE)dry ground.â 23Â For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed, just as the Lord your God had done to the [o]Red Sea, (AF)which He dried up before us until we had crossed; 24Â so that (AG)all the peoples of the earth may know that the (AH)hand of the Lord is mighty, so that you may [p](AI)fear the Lord your God [q]forever.â
