¹⁰ This is how you will know that the living God^(A) is among you^(B) and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites,^(C) Hivites, Perizzites,^(D) Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites.^(E)

Driving Out the Nations

7 When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess^(A) and drives out before you many nations^(B)—the Hittites,^(C) Girgashites,^(D) Amorites,^(E) Canaanites, Perizzites,^(F) Hivites^(G) and Jebusites,^(H) seven nations larger and stronger than you—

² I will send an angel^(A) before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.^(B)

³¹ It is a dreadful thing^(A) to fall into the hands^(B) of the living God.^(C)

²⁶ David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace^(A) from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised^(B) Philistine that he should defy^(C) the armies of the living^(D) God?”

⁴ It may be that the Lord your God will hear all the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule^(A) the living God, and that he will rebuke^(B) him for the words the Lord your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant^(C) that still survives.”

¹² When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you,^(A) mighty warrior.^(B)”

¹³ “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders^(C) that our ancestors told^(D) us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned^(E) us and given us into the hand of Midian.”
