Chapter 24
Covenant Ceremony. 1 (A)Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem, summoning the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel. When they stood in ranks before God, 2 Joshua addressed all the people: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: In times past your ancestors, down to Terah,(B) father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River[a] and served other gods. 3 But I brought your father Abraham from the region beyond the River and led him through the entire land of Canaan.(C) I made his descendants numerous, and gave him Isaac. 4 To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau.(D) To Esau I assigned the mountain region of Seir to possess, while Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.
5 “Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and struck Egypt with the plagues and wonders that I wrought in her midst.(E) Afterward I led you out. 6 And when I led your ancestors out of Egypt, you came to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued your ancestors to the Red Sea with chariots and charioteers.(F) 7 When they cried out to the Lord,(G) he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, upon whom he brought the sea so that it covered them. Your eyes saw what I did to Egypt. After you dwelt a long time in the wilderness, 8 (H)I brought you into the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I delivered them into your power. You took possession of their land, and I destroyed them at your approach. 9 (I)Then Balak, son of Zippor, king of Moab, prepared to war against Israel. He summoned Balaam, son of Beor, to curse you, 10 (J)but I would not listen to Balaam. Instead, he had to bless you, and I delivered you from his power. 11 Once you crossed the Jordan(K) and came to Jericho, the citizens of Jericho fought against you, but I delivered them also into your power. 12 And I sent the hornets[b] ahead of you which drove them—the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites—out of your way; it was not your sword or your bow.(L) 13 I gave you a land you did not till and cities you did not build, to dwell in; you ate of vineyards and olive groves you did not plant.(M)
14 (N)“Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve him completely and sincerely. Cast out the gods your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 (O)If it is displeasing to you to serve the Lord, choose today whom you will serve, the gods your ancestors served beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are dwelling. As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
16 But the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods. 17 For it was the Lord, our God, who brought us and our ancestors up out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. He performed those great signs before our very eyes and protected us along our entire journey and among all the peoples through whom we passed. 18 At our approach the Lord drove out all the peoples, including the Amorites who dwelt in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”
19 Joshua in turn said to the people, “You may not be able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God; he is a passionate God(P) who will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord and serve strange gods, he will then do evil to you and destroy you, after having done you good.”
21 But the people answered Joshua, “No! We will serve the Lord.” 22 Joshua therefore said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the Lord.” They replied, “We are witnesses!” 23 “Now, therefore, put away the foreign gods that are among you and turn your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.” 24 Then the people promised Joshua, “We will serve the Lord, our God, and will listen to his voice.”
25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem. 26 Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the terebinth that was in the sanctuary of the Lord.(Q) 27 And Joshua said to all the people, “This stone shall be our witness,(R) for it has heard all the words which the Lord spoke to us. It shall be a witness against you, should you wish to deny your God.” 28 Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to their own heritage.(S)
Death of Joshua. 29 (T)After these events, Joshua, son of Nun, servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten, 30 and they buried him within the borders of his heritage at Timnath-serah(U) in the mountain region of Ephraim north of Mount Gaash.[c] 31 Israel served the Lord during the entire lifetime of Joshua, and of those elders who outlived Joshua and who knew all the work the Lord had done for Israel. 32 (V)The bones of Joseph,[d] which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried in Shechem in the plot of ground Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred pieces of money. This was a heritage of the descendants of Joseph. 33 When Eleazar, son of Aaron, also died, he was buried on the hill which had been given to his son Phinehas(W) in the mountain region of Ephraim.

24 Jozua liet alle Israëlieten in Sichem bij zich komen met hun leiders, legeraanvoerders en rechters. Zij gaven gehoor aan zijn oproep en kwamen bijeen voor God. 2 Jozua sprak hen toe: ‘De Here, de God van Israël, zegt: “Uw voorouders hebben lang geleden ten oosten van de Eufraat gewoond. Zij vereerden andere goden, ook Terach, de vader van Abraham en Nachor. 3 Ik haalde uw voorvader Abraham weg uit dat land aan de overkant van de rivier, leidde hem naar het land Kanaän en gaf hem door zijn zoon Isaak vele nakomelingen. 4 De kinderen die Ik Isaak gaf, waren Jakob en Esau. Esau kreeg van Mij het gebied rond de berg Seïr en Jakob en zijn kinderen gingen naar Egypte. 5 Toen stuurde Ik Mozes en Aäron om vreselijke plagen over Egypte te brengen en bevrijdde Ik mijn volk uit dat land. 6 Maar toen u bij de Rietzee kwam, achtervolgd door de Egyptenaren met hun strijdwagens en ruiters, riep u Mij te hulp. 7 Ik legde duisternis tussen u en de Egyptenaren. De zee liet Ik op die Egyptenaren los, zodat zij verdronken. U zag wat Ik deed. De Israëlieten brachten daarna vele jaren door in de woestijn. 8 Ten slotte bracht Ik u naar het land van de Amorieten aan de overzijde van de Jordaan. Zij vielen u aan, maar Ik vernietigde hen en gaf hun land aan u.
9 Toen verklaarde koning Balak van Moab u de oorlog en hij vroeg Bileam, de zoon van Beor, of hij u wilde vervloeken. 10 Maar Ik weigerde naar hem te luisteren. In plaats daarvan zorgde Ik ervoor dat hij u zegende, zo redde Ik Israël uit zijn macht. 11 Daarna stak u de Jordaan over en bereikte Jericho. De mannen van Jericho streden tegen u, evenals vele anderen, de Perizzieten, de Kanaänieten, de Hethieten, de Girgasieten, de Chiwwieten en de Jebusieten. Eén voor één bonden zij de strijd met u aan, maar Ik vernietigde hen allemaal. 12 Ik stuurde horzels voor u uit die de twee Amoritische koningen en hun onderdanen verdreven. Het waren niet uw eigen wapens die u de overwinning bezorgden! 13 Ik gaf u land, waarvoor u niet had gewerkt en steden die u niet zelf had gebouwd, dezelfde steden waarin u nu woont. Ik gaf u wijngaarden en tuinen met olijfbomen om u van voedsel te voorzien, ook al plantte u ze niet.”
14 Heb daarom diep ontzag voor de Here en dien Hem oprecht en trouw. Doe de afgodsbeelden die uw voorouders aan de Eufraat en in Egypte vereerden, voor altijd weg. Aanbid alleen de Here. 15 Maar als u de Here niet wilt gehoorzamen, besluit dan vandaag nog wie u wel wilt gehoorzamen. Zullen dat de goden van uw voorouders aan de overzijde van de Eufraat zijn of de goden van de Amorieten in dit land? Maar ik en mijn gezin, wij zullen de Here dienen.’
16 Het hele volk antwoordde: ‘Wij zullen de Here nooit verlaten om andere goden te gaan vereren! 17 Want de Here is onze God. Hij heeft onze voorouders uit de slavernij in Egypte bevrijd. Hij is de God die machtige wonderen heeft gedaan voor de ogen van Israël, toen wij door de woestijn trokken. Hij heeft ons ook beschermd tegen onze vijanden, toen wij door hun land reisden. 18 De Here verdreef de Amorieten en de andere volken uit dit land. Ja, wij kiezen voor de Here, want alleen Hij is onze God.’
19 Maar Jozua antwoordde daarop: ‘U kunt de Here niet dienen, want Hij is heilig en wil u geheel en al, Hij zal uw opstandigheid en zonden niet vergeven. 20 Als u Hem de rug toekeert en andere goden gaat vereren, zal Hij Zich tegen u keren en u vernietigen, ook al heeft Hij al die tijd nog zo goed voor u gezorgd.’ 21 Maar het volk verklaarde opnieuw: ‘Wij kiezen voor de Here!’ 22 ‘U hebt het uzelf horen zeggen,’ zei Jozua, ‘u hebt ervoor gekozen de Here te dienen.’ ‘Ja,’ antwoordden zij, ‘wij zijn er getuigen van.’
23 ‘Goed,’ zei hij, ‘dan moet u alle afgodsbeelden die u bezit, vernietigen en voortaan de Here, de God van Israël, gehoorzamen.’ 24 Het volk herhaalde opnieuw: ‘Ja, wij zullen alleen de Here dienen en gehoorzamen.’ 25 Daarom sloot Jozua die dag bij Sichem een overeenkomst met hen, waarbij zij zich verbonden tot het houden van de wetten en rechten die Jozua vaststelde. 26 Jozua schreef het antwoord van het volk in het wetboek van God, nam een grote steen als gedenkteken en plaatste die onder de eik die naast de tabernakel stond. Dit was een heilige plaats voor de Here. 27 Toen zei Jozua tegen het hele volk: ‘Deze steen heeft alles gehoord wat de Here zei, daarom zal hij tegen u getuigen als u uw woord niet houdt.’ 28 Daarna stuurde Jozua de mensen terug naar hun eigen woonplaats.
29 Korte tijd later overleed Jozua op de leeftijd van honderdtien jaar. 30 Hij werd begraven in zijn eigen gebied bij Timnath-Serach, in het bergland van Efraïm, aan de noordkant van de berg Gaäs.
31 Israël gehoorzaamde de Here gedurende het hele leven van Jozua en van de leiders die hem overleefden, die persoonlijk getuige waren geweest van de machtige dingen die de Here voor Israël had gedaan. 32 De beenderen van Jozef, die het volk Israël uit Egypte had meegenomen, werden begraven in Sichem, in het stuk grond dat Jakob voor honderd zilverstukken had gekocht van de zonen van Chamor. Dat stuk grond lag in het gebied dat was toegewezen aan de stam van Jozef.
33 Ook Aärons zoon Eleazar stierf, hij werd begraven in het bergland van Efraïm op de berg die aan zijn zoon Pinechas was gegeven.

The Covenant Renewed at Shechem
24 Then Joshua assembled(A) all the tribes of Israel at Shechem.(B) He summoned(C) the elders,(D) leaders, judges and officials of Israel,(E) and they presented themselves before God.
2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor,(F) lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods.(G) 3 But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canaan(H) and gave him many descendants.(I) I gave him Isaac,(J) 4 and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau.(K) I assigned the hill country of Seir(L) to Esau, but Jacob and his family went down to Egypt.(M)
5 “‘Then I sent Moses and Aaron,(N) and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and I brought you out.(O) 6 When I brought your people out of Egypt, you came to the sea,(P) and the Egyptians pursued them with chariots and horsemen[a](Q) as far as the Red Sea.[b](R) 7 But they cried(S) to the Lord for help, and he put darkness(T) between you and the Egyptians; he brought the sea over them and covered them.(U) You saw with your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians.(V) Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.(W)
8 “‘I brought you to the land of the Amorites(X) who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands. I destroyed them from before you, and you took possession of their land.(Y) 9 When Balak son of Zippor,(Z) the king of Moab, prepared to fight against Israel, he sent for Balaam son of Beor(AA) to put a curse on you.(AB) 10 But I would not listen to Balaam, so he blessed you(AC) again and again, and I delivered you out of his hand.
11 “‘Then you crossed the Jordan(AD) and came to Jericho.(AE) The citizens of Jericho fought against you, as did also the Amorites, Perizzites,(AF) Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites,(AG) but I gave them into your hands.(AH) 12 I sent the hornet(AI) ahead of you, which drove them out(AJ) before you—also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword and bow.(AK) 13 So I gave you a land(AL) on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’(AM)
14 “Now fear the Lord(AN) and serve him with all faithfulness.(AO) Throw away the gods(AP) your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt,(AQ) and serve the Lord. 15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites,(AR) in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household,(AS) we will serve the Lord.”(AT)
16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake(AU) the Lord to serve other gods! 17 It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery,(AV) and performed those great signs(AW) before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled. 18 And the Lord drove out(AX) before us all the nations,(AY) including the Amorites, who lived in the land.(AZ) We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.(BA)”
19 Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God;(BB) he is a jealous God.(BC) He will not forgive(BD) your rebellion(BE) and your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord(BF) and serve foreign gods, he will turn(BG) and bring disaster(BH) on you and make an end of you,(BI) after he has been good to you.”
21 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the Lord.”
22 Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses(BJ) against yourselves that you have chosen(BK) to serve the Lord.”
“Yes, we are witnesses,(BL)” they replied.
23 “Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods(BM) that are among you and yield your hearts(BN) to the Lord, the God of Israel.”
24 And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and obey him.”(BO)
25 On that day Joshua made a covenant(BP) for the people, and there at Shechem(BQ) he reaffirmed for them decrees and laws.(BR) 26 And Joshua recorded(BS) these things in the Book of the Law of God.(BT) Then he took a large stone(BU) and set it up there under the oak(BV) near the holy place of the Lord.
27 “See!” he said to all the people. “This stone(BW) will be a witness(BX) against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue(BY) to your God.”(BZ)
28 Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to their own inheritance.(CA)
Buried in the Promised Land(CB)
29 After these things, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died(CC) at the age of a hundred and ten.(CD) 30 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Serah[c](CE) in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.(CF)
31 Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders(CG) who outlived him and who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel.
32 And Joseph’s bones,(CH) which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt,(CI) were buried at Shechem in the tract of land(CJ) that Jacob bought for a hundred pieces of silver[d] from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem. This became the inheritance of Joseph’s descendants.
33 And Eleazar son of Aaron(CK) died and was buried at Gibeah,(CL) which had been allotted to his son Phinehas(CM) in the hill country(CN) of Ephraim.
