¹² I sent the hornet^(A) ahead of you, which drove them out^(B) before you—also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword and bow.^{(C) 13} So I gave you a land^(D) on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’^(E)

¹⁴ “Now fear the Lord^(F) and serve him with all faithfulness.^(G) Throw away the gods^(H) your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt,^(I) and serve the Lord. ¹⁵ But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites,^(J) in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household,^(K) we will serve the Lord.”^(L)

¹⁶ Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake^(M) the Lord to serve other gods! ¹⁷ It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery,^(N) and performed those great signs^(O) before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled. ¹⁸ And the Lord drove out^(P) before us all the nations,^(Q) including the Amorites, who lived in the land.^(R) We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.^(S)”

¹⁹ Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God;^(T) he is a jealous God.^(U) He will not forgive^(V) your rebellion^(W) and your sins. ²⁰ If you forsake the Lord^(X) and serve foreign gods, he will turn^(Y) and bring disaster^(Z) on you and make an end of you,^(AA) after he has been good to you.”

²¹ But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the Lord.”

²² Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses^(AB) against yourselves that you have chosen^(AC) to serve the Lord.”

“Yes, we are witnesses,^(AD)” they replied.

²³ “Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods^(AE) that are among you and yield your hearts^(AF) to the Lord, the God of Israel.”

²⁴ And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and obey him.”^(AG)

Believers Who Have Died

¹³ Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed^(A) about those who sleep in death,^(B) so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.^{(C) 14} For we believe that Jesus died and rose again,^(D) and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.^{(E) 15} According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord,^(F) will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.^{(G) 16} For the Lord himself will come down from heaven,^(H) with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel^(I) and with the trumpet call of God,^(J) and the dead in Christ will rise first.^{(K) 17} After that, we who are still alive and are left^(L) will be caught up together with them in the clouds^(M) to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord^(N) forever. ¹⁸ Therefore encourage one another^(O) with these words.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like^(A) ten virgins who took their lamps^(B) and went out to meet the bridegroom.^{(C) 2} Five of them were foolish and five were wise.^{(D) 3} The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. ⁴ The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. ⁵ The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.^(E)

⁶ “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

⁷ “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. ⁸ The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’^(F)

⁹ “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

¹⁰ “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet.^(G) And the door was shut.

¹¹ “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’

¹² “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’^(H)

¹³ “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.^(I)
