Three Tribes Go Home
22 Then Joshua called a meeting of the people from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and ·East [L half-tribe of] Manasseh. 2 He said to them, “You have done everything Moses, the Lord’s servant, told you to do. You have also obeyed ·all my commands [L my voice in all I commanded you]. 3 For a long time you have ·supported [L not abandoned/forsaken] the other Israelites. You have been careful to ·obey the commands [or carry out the task] the Lord your God gave you [Deut. 3:18–20]. 4 The Lord your God promised to give the Israelites ·peace [rest], and he has kept his promise. Now you may go back to your homes, to the land that Moses, the Lord’s servant, gave you, ·on the east side of [L beyond] the Jordan River. 5 But be careful to obey the ·teachings [commandment] and laws Moses, the Lord’s servant, gave you: to love the Lord your God and ·obey his commands [L walk in his paths], to ·continue to follow [L hold fast to] him and serve him ·the very best you can [L with all your heart and with all your soul].”
6 Then Joshua ·said good-bye to [blessed] them, and ·they left and [L sent them away and they] went away to their ·homes [L tents]. 7 Moses had given the land of Bashan to ·East [the half-tribe of] Manasseh. Joshua gave land on the west side of the Jordan River to ·West Manasseh [L the other half]. And he sent them to their homes and he blessed them. 8 He said, “Go back to your homes with your riches. You have many animals, silver, gold, bronze, and iron, and many beautiful clothes. Divide among ·yourselves [L your brothers] the ·things [plunder] you have taken from your enemies.
9 So the people from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and ·East [the half-tribe of] Manasseh left the other ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] at Shiloh in Canaan and went back to Gilead. It was their own land, given to them by Moses as the Lord had commanded.
10 The people of Reuben, Gad, and ·East [the half-tribe of] Manasseh went to Geliloth, near the Jordan River in the land of Canaan. There they built a ·beautiful [or imposing; impressive] altar. 11 The ·other Israelites still at Shiloh [L sons/T children of Israel] heard about the altar these three tribes built at the border of Canaan at Geliloth, near the Jordan River on Israel’s side. 12 All the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] became very angry at these three tribes, so ·they [L the whole assembly/congregation] met together and decided to ·fight [wage war against] them [C because they considered this idolatry; Deut. 13:12–18].
13 The ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] sent Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest to Gilead to talk to the people of Reuben, Gad, and East Manasseh. 14 They also sent ·one leader [L ten leaders, one] from each of the ten tribes at Shiloh. Each of them was a leader ·of his family group [among the clans] of Israelites.
15 These leaders went to Gilead to talk to the people of Reuben, Gad, and ·East [L the half-tribe of] Manasseh. They said: 16 “·All the Israelites [L The whole assembly/congregation of the Lord] ask you: ‘Why did you ·turn against [break faith by turning away from] the God of Israel by building an altar for yourselves? You know that this is ·against God’s law [L rebellion this day against the Lord]. 17 ·Remember what happened at Peor [L Wasn’t the sin of Peor enough; Num. 24]? We still ·suffer today [L have not cleansed/purified ourselves] because of that sin, for which ·God made many Israelites very sick [L a plague came against the congregation/assembly of the Lord]. 18 And now are you turning against the Lord and refusing to follow him?
“‘If you ·don’t stop what you’re doing [L rebel against the Lord] today, the Lord will be angry with ·everyone in Israel [the whole congregation/assembly] tomorrow. 19 If your land is ·unclean [C in a ritual sense], come over into our land where the Lord’s ·Tent [T Tabernacle] is. Share it with us. But don’t ·turn [rebel] against the Lord and us by building another altar for the Lord our God. 20 ·Remember how [L Is it not true that…?] Achan son of Zerah refused to obey the command about ·what must be completely destroyed [L the devoted things; 7:1–26]. That one man broke God’s law, but ·all the Israelites [L the whole assembly/congregation] were punished. ·Achan died because of his sin, but others also died [L And he did not die alone for his sin].’”
21 The people from Reuben, Gad, and ·East [the half-tribe of] Manasseh answered [L the heads of the clans of Israel], 22 “·The Lord is God of gods! [or El, God, the Lord] ·The Lord is God of gods [or El, God, the Lord]! God knows, and we want you to know also. If we have ·done something wrong [L rebelled or broken faith with the Lord], ·you may kill us [L do not spare us today]. 23 If we have built our own altar to turn away from the Lord or to offer burnt offerings [1:1–17] or ·grain [L gift; tribute; Lev. 2:1] and ·fellowship [or peace; well-being] offerings [3:1], may the Lord himself punish us.
24 “We did not build it for that reason. We feared that someday your people would not accept us as part of your nation. Then they might say, ‘·You cannot worship [L What do you have to do with…?] the Lord, the God of Israel. 25 The Lord made the Jordan River a border between us and you people of Reuben and Gad. You ·cannot worship [L have no share/portion in] the Lord.’ So we feared that your children might make our ·children [descendants] stop ·worshiping [L fearing] the Lord.
26 “That is why we decided to build this altar. But it is not for burnt offerings [Lev. 1:1–17] and sacrifices. 27 This altar is ·proof to [witness between] you and us and to all our ·children [generations] who will come after us that we ·worship the Lord [L do the service of the Lord before him] with our whole burnt offerings, grain, and ·fellowship [or peace] offerings. This was so your ·children [descendants] would not say to our ·children [descendants], ‘You ·are not the Lord’s [L have no share/portion in the Lord].’
28 “In the future if ·your children [L they] say that to us or our ·children [generations], we can say, ‘See the altar made by our ancestors. It is ·exactly like [a copy/model of] the Lord’s altar, but we do not use it for burnt offerings or sacrifices. It ·shows that we are part of Israel [L is a witness between us and you].’
29 “·Truly, we don’t want to be [L Far be it from us to rebel] against the Lord or to ·stop following [turn away from] him by building an altar for burnt offerings [Lev. 1:1–17], grain [L gift; tribute] offerings [Lev. 2:1], or sacrifices. We know the only true altar to the Lord our God is in front of the ·Holy Tent [T Tabernacle].”
30 When Phinehas the priest and the ·ten leaders [L leaders of the congregation, the heads of the clans of the families of Israel,] heard the people of Reuben, Gad, and East Manasseh, they were ·pleased [satisfied]. 31 So Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest, said to the people of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, “·Now [L Today] we know the Lord is ·with us [L in our midst] ·and that you didn’t turn against [or because you have not broken faith with] him. Now ·the Israelites will not be punished by [L you have rescued the Israelites from the hand of] the Lord.”
32 Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the leaders left the people of Reuben and Gad in Gilead and went back to Canaan where they told the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] what had happened. 33 They were ·pleased [satisfied] and thanked God. So they ·decided not to fight [L talked no more about going to war against] the people of Reuben and Gad and destroy those lands.
34 And the people of Reuben and Gad named the altar ·Proof That We Believe the Lord Is God [L A Witness Between Us—That the Lord Is God; or Witness, “For,” they said, “it is a witness between us that the Lord is God”].

22 Luego Josué reunió a las tribus de Rubén, de Gad y a la media tribu de Manasés. 2 Les dijo: «Ustedes han obedecido todo lo que Moisés el siervo del SEÑOR les ordenó, y ustedes me han obedecido en todo lo que les he ordenado yo. 3 Hasta el día de hoy nunca han abandonado a sus hermanos, sino que han obedecido la orden del SEÑOR su Dios. 4 Ya sus hermanos tienen un lugar seguro porque se lo dio el SEÑOR su Dios tal como él se lo prometió. Ahora ustedes pueden dejarnos y volver a sus hogares, a su propia tierra que el SEÑOR les dio a ustedes al otro lado del Jordán. 5 Sólo les digo que pongan empeño en cumplir el mandamiento y la ley que les dio Moisés, el siervo del SEÑOR: que amen al SEÑOR su Dios, cumplan siempre su voluntad, obedezcan sus mandamientos, se mantengan unidos a él y le sirvan de todo corazón y con todo su ser».
6 Luego Josué los bendijo, se despidió de ellos y ellos se marcharon a sus hogares. 7 Moisés le había dado tierra en Basán a la media tribu de Manasés, y a la otra mitad Josué le había dado tierra junto a sus hermanos en el lado occidental del Jordán. A los primeros Josué los mandó a sus hogares y les dio una bendición. 8 Les dijo: «Regresen a sus hogares con gran riqueza, con mucho ganado, con plata, oro, bronce y hierro, y mucha ropa. Repartan con sus hermanos el botín de sus enemigos».
9 De tal manera que los rubenitas, los gaditas y la media tribu de Manasés dejaron a los israelitas en Siló en la tierra de Canaán, para volver a la tierra de Galaad, su propia tierra, que habían ganado de acuerdo al mandato del SEÑOR a través de Moisés.
10 Cuando llegaron a Guelilot cerca al Jordán en la tierra de Canaán, los rubenitas, los gaditas y la media tribu de Manasés construyeron un altar cerca al Jordán, un gran altar. 11 El resto de los israelitas oyeron que los rubenitas, los gaditas y la media tribu de Manasés habían construido un altar en el límite de la tierra de Canaán, en Guelilot, cerca del Jordán en el lado de los israelitas. 12 Cuando los israelitas se enteraron de eso, todos se reunieron en Siló para hacer la guerra contra ellos.
13 Luego los israelitas enviaron a Finés, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, a donde estaban los rubenitas, los gaditas y la media tribu de Manasés, en la tierra de Galaad. 14 Lo enviaron con diez líderes, uno por cada tribu de Israel. Cada uno de ellos era cabeza de familia entre las tribus de Israel. 15 Ellos fueron a donde estaban los rubenitas, los gaditas y la media tribu de Manasés en la tierra de Galaad, y les dijeron:
16 —Toda la asamblea del SEÑOR dice: “¿Qué es esto? Ustedes están cometiendo una traición contra el Dios de Israel. Al construir un altar están abandonando al SEÑOR, pues eso es una rebelión contra el SEÑOR. 17 ¿Es que el pecado de Peor[a] no fue lo bastante grave para nosotros? Todavía hoy estamos sufriendo por el pecado que cometimos. Dios le envió una enfermedad a la comunidad del SEÑOR. 18 ¿Y ahora ustedes se alejan del SEÑOR? Si ustedes hoy se rebelan contra el SEÑOR, mañana él se enojará con toda la comunidad de Israel. 19 Si necesitan un altar porque su propia tierra está impura, vengan a la tierra del SEÑOR donde está la Carpa Sagrada del SEÑOR, y tomen una parte del territorio entre nosotros. Pero no se rebelen contra el SEÑOR, ni contra nosotros, al construir para ustedes un altar distinto al altar del SEÑOR nuestro Dios. 20 ¿No se rebeló Acán, hijo de Zara, contra el mandato acerca de las cosas que debían ser destruidas, y por eso toda la nación de Israel fue castigada? Acán no fue el único que murió por su pecado”.
21 Entonces los rubenitas, los gaditas y la media tribu de Manasés dijeron en respuesta a los líderes de las tribus de Israel:
22 —El SEÑOR es el Dios de todos los dioses, y lo decimos otra vez, el SEÑOR es el Dios de todos los dioses. Él sabe por qué hicimos esto y queremos que Israel también lo sepa. Ustedes pueden juzgar lo que hemos hecho. Si nos hemos rebelado o hemos desobedecido al SEÑOR, entonces mátennos. 23 ¡Que el SEÑOR nos castigue si construimos un altar para abandonar al SEÑOR! ¡Que nos castigue si vamos a ofrecer aquí sacrificios que deben quemarse completamente, ofrendas de cereal u ofrendas para festejar! 24 Para ser sinceros, hicimos esto por miedo, pensando, “Algún día sus descendientes pueden decirles a nuestros descendientes, ¿Qué tienen que ver ustedes con el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel? 25 ¡El SEÑOR ha hecho al Jordán una frontera entre nosotros y ustedes los rubenitas y gaditas! Ustedes no tienen parte en el SEÑOR”. De esa manera sus descendientes pueden obligar a nuestros descendientes a que dejen de adorar al SEÑOR.
26 »Así que nosotros dijimos: “Actuemos por nosotros mismos, construyendo un altar, no para ofrecer sacrificios que deben quemarse completamente u otros sacrificios, 27 sino para que sea un testigo entre nosotros y ustedes, y entre nuestras generaciones después de nosotros. Será testigo de que nosotros adoraremos al SEÑOR en su presencia con sacrificios que deben quemarse completamente, sacrificios por el pecado y ofrendas para festejar. Así en el futuro sus descendientes no les dirán a nuestros descendientes: Ustedes no tienen nada que ver con el SEÑOR”. 28 Y nosotros dijimos: “Si alguna vez nos dicen esto a nosotros o a nuestros descendientes en el futuro, entonces nosotros diremos: Miren la réplica del altar del SEÑOR que nuestros antepasados hicieron, no para ofrendas ni sacrificios, sino como testigo entre nosotros y ustedes”.
29 »Nosotros nunca nos rebelaríamos contra el SEÑOR ni nos alejaríamos hoy de seguir al SEÑOR. Nunca construiríamos un altar para sacrificios que deben quemarse completamente, ofrendas de cereal u otros sacrificios. El altar que está en frente de la Carpa Sagrada es el altar del SEÑOR.
30 Cuando el sacerdote Finés y los líderes de la asamblea, los cabeza de familia de las tribus que estaban con él, escucharon lo que dijeron los rubenitas, los gaditas y la media tribu de Manasés, quedaron bien conformes con la explicación. 31 Luego Finés, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, dijo a los rubenitas, a los gaditas y a los de Manasés:
—Ahora nosotros sabemos que el SEÑOR está entre nosotros y que ustedes no desobedecieron al SEÑOR en este asunto. Ustedes les han evitado a los israelitas un castigo del SEÑOR.
32 Luego Finés, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, y los líderes volvieron de la tierra de los rubenitas y los gaditas en la tierra de Galaad, a donde viven los israelitas en la tierra de Canaán, y les informaron lo acontecido. 33 El informe fue del agrado de los israelitas. Los israelitas agradecieron a Dios, y ya no hablaron de ir a la guerra contra ellos ni de destruir la tierra donde estaban viviendo.
34 Los rubenitas y los gaditas llamaron al altar Testigo porque decían: «Es un testigo entre nosotros de que el SEÑOR es nuestro Dios».

22 Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh 2 and said to them, “You have done all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded,(A) and you have obeyed me in everything I commanded. 3 For a long time now—to this very day—you have not deserted your fellow Israelites but have carried out the mission the Lord your God gave you. 4 Now that the Lord your God has given them rest(B) as he promised, return to your homes(C) in the land that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan.(D) 5 But be very careful to keep the commandment(E) and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you: to love the Lord(F) your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands,(G) to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.(H)”
6 Then Joshua blessed(I) them and sent them away, and they went to their homes. 7 (To the half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given land in Bashan,(J) and to the other half of the tribe Joshua gave land on the west side(K) of the Jordan along with their fellow Israelites.) When Joshua sent them home, he blessed them,(L) 8 saying, “Return to your homes with your great wealth—with large herds of livestock,(M) with silver, gold, bronze and iron,(N) and a great quantity of clothing—and divide(O) the plunder(P) from your enemies with your fellow Israelites.”
9 So the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh left the Israelites at Shiloh(Q) in Canaan to return to Gilead,(R) their own land, which they had acquired in accordance with the command of the Lord through Moses.
10 When they came to Geliloth(S) near the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an imposing altar(T) there by the Jordan. 11 And when the Israelites heard that they had built the altar on the border of Canaan at Geliloth near the Jordan on the Israelite side, 12 the whole assembly of Israel gathered at Shiloh(U) to go to war against them.
13 So the Israelites sent Phinehas(V) son of Eleazar,(W) the priest, to the land of Gilead—to Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh. 14 With him they sent ten of the chief men, one from each of the tribes of Israel, each the head of a family division among the Israelite clans.(X)
15 When they went to Gilead—to Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh—they said to them: 16 “The whole assembly of the Lord says: ‘How could you break faith(Y) with the God of Israel like this? How could you turn away from the Lord and build yourselves an altar in rebellion(Z) against him now? 17 Was not the sin of Peor(AA) enough for us? Up to this very day we have not cleansed ourselves from that sin, even though a plague fell on the community of the Lord! 18 And are you now turning away from the Lord?
“‘If you rebel against the Lord today, tomorrow he will be angry with the whole community(AB) of Israel. 19 If the land you possess is defiled, come over to the Lord’s land, where the Lord’s tabernacle(AC) stands, and share the land with us. But do not rebel against the Lord or against us by building an altar(AD) for yourselves, other than the altar of the Lord our God. 20 When Achan son of Zerah was unfaithful in regard to the devoted things,[a](AE) did not wrath(AF) come on the whole community(AG) of Israel? He was not the only one who died for his sin.’”(AH)
21 Then Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh replied to the heads of the clans of Israel: 22 “The Mighty One, God, the Lord! The Mighty One, God,(AI) the Lord!(AJ) He knows!(AK) And let Israel know! If this has been in rebellion or disobedience to the Lord, do not spare us this day. 23 If we have built our own altar to turn away from the Lord and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings,(AL) or to sacrifice fellowship offerings on it, may the Lord himself call us to account.(AM)
24 “No! We did it for fear that some day your descendants might say to ours, ‘What do you have to do with the Lord, the God of Israel? 25 The Lord has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you—you Reubenites and Gadites! You have no share in the Lord.’ So your descendants might cause ours to stop fearing the Lord.
26 “That is why we said, ‘Let us get ready and build an altar—but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.’ 27 On the contrary, it is to be a witness(AN) between us and you and the generations that follow, that we will worship the Lord at his sanctuary with our burnt offerings, sacrifices and fellowship offerings.(AO) Then in the future your descendants will not be able to say to ours, ‘You have no share in the Lord.’
28 “And we said, ‘If they ever say this to us, or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the replica of the Lord’s altar, which our ancestors built, not for burnt offerings and sacrifices, but as a witness(AP) between us and you.’
29 “Far be it from us to rebel(AQ) against the Lord and turn away from him today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings and sacrifices, other than the altar of the Lord our God that stands before his tabernacle.(AR)”
30 When Phinehas the priest and the leaders of the community—the heads of the clans of the Israelites—heard what Reuben, Gad and Manasseh had to say, they were pleased. 31 And Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, said to Reuben, Gad and Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is with us,(AS) because you have not been unfaithful to the Lord in this matter. Now you have rescued the Israelites from the Lord’s hand.”
32 Then Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, and the leaders returned to Canaan from their meeting with the Reubenites and Gadites in Gilead and reported to the Israelites.(AT) 33 They were glad to hear the report and praised God.(AU) And they talked no more about going to war against them to devastate the country where the Reubenites and the Gadites lived.
34 And the Reubenites and the Gadites gave the altar this name: A Witness(AV) Between Us—that the Lord is God.
