Spies Sent to Jericho
2 Then Joshua son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, ‘Go, view the land, especially Jericho.’ So they went, and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and spent the night there. 2 The king of Jericho was told, ‘Some Israelites have come here tonight to search out the land.’ 3 Then the king of Jericho sent orders to Rahab, ‘Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come only to search out the whole land.’ 4 But the woman took the two men and hid them. Then she said, ‘True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they came from. 5 And when it was time to close the gate at dark, the men went out. Where the men went I do not know. Pursue them quickly, for you can overtake them.’ 6 She had, however, brought them up to the roof and hidden them with the stalks of flax that she had laid out on the roof. 7 So the men pursued them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. As soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut.
8 Before they went to sleep, she came up to them on the roof 9 and said to the men: ‘I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt in fear before you. 10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea[a] before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. 11 As soon as we heard it, our hearts failed, and there was no courage left in any of us because of you. The Lord your God is indeed God in heaven above and on earth below. 12 Now then, since I have dealt kindly with you, swear to me by the Lord that you in turn will deal kindly with my family. Give me a sign of good faith 13 that you will spare my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.’ 14 The men said to her, ‘Our life for yours! If you do not tell this business of ours, then we will deal kindly and faithfully with you when the Lord gives us the land.’
15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the outer side of the city wall and she resided within the wall itself. 16 She said to them, ‘Go towards the hill country, so that the pursuers may not come upon you. Hide yourselves there for three days, until the pursuers have returned; then afterwards you may go on your way.’ 17 The men said to her, ‘We will be released from this oath that you have made us swear to you 18 if we invade the land and you do not tie this crimson cord in the window through which you let us down, and you do not gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your family. 19 If any of you go out of the doors of your house into the street, they shall be responsible for their own death, and we shall be innocent; but if a hand is laid upon any who are with you in the house, we shall bear the responsibility for their death. 20 But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be released from this oath that you made us swear to you.’ 21 She said, ‘According to your words, so be it.’ She sent them away and they departed. Then she tied the crimson cord in the window.
22 They departed and went into the hill country and stayed there for three days, until the pursuers returned. The pursuers had searched all along the way and found nothing. 23 Then the two men came down again from the hill country. They crossed over, came to Joshua son of Nun, and told him all that had happened to them. 24 They said to Joshua, ‘Truly the Lord has given all the land into our hands; moreover, all the inhabitants of the land melt in fear before us.’

2 Und Josua, der Sohn Nuns, sandte von Sittim heimlich zwei Männer als Kundschafter aus und sprach: Geht hin, seht euch das Land an und [besonders] Jericho[a]! Und sie gingen hin und kamen in das Haus einer Hure namens Rahab und übernachteten dort.
2 Es wurde aber dem König von Jericho berichtet: Siehe, in dieser Nacht sind Männer von den Kindern Israels hierhergekommen, um das Land auszukundschaften!
3 Da sandte der König von Jericho [Boten] zu Rahab und ließ ihr sagen: Gib die Männer heraus, die zu dir gekommen und in dein Haus eingekehrt sind; denn sie sind gekommen, um das ganze Land auszukundschaften!
4 Die Frau aber hatte die beiden Männer genommen und verborgen und sprach nun: Es sind freilich Männer zu mir hereingekommen; aber ich wusste nicht, woher sie waren;
5 und als man die Tore schließen musste bei Einbruch der Dunkelheit, da gingen die Männer hinaus. Ich weiß nicht, wohin die Männer gegangen sind. Jagt ihnen rasch nach, denn ihr werdet sie einholen!
6 Sie aber hatte [die Männer] auf das Dach steigen lassen und sie unter den Flachsstängeln versteckt, die sie für sich auf dem Dach ausgebreitet hatte.
7 Die Leute nun jagten ihnen nach auf dem Weg zum Jordan bis zu den Furten; und man schloss das Tor zu, als die, welche ihnen nachjagten, hinausgegangen waren.
8 Ehe aber die Männer sich schlafen legten, stieg sie zu ihnen auf das Dach hinauf
9 und sprach zu ihnen: Ich weiß, dass der Herr euch das Land gegeben hat; denn es hat uns Furcht vor euch überfallen, und alle Einwohner des Landes sind vor euch verzagt.
10 Denn wir haben gehört, wie der Herr das Wasser des Schilfmeeres vor euch ausgetrocknet hat, als ihr aus Ägypten gezogen seid, und was ihr den beiden Königen der Amoriter, Sihon und Og, jenseits des Jordan, getan habt, an denen ihr den Bann vollstreckt habt.
11 Und als wir dies hörten, da wurde unser Herz verzagt, und es ist kein rechter Mut mehr in irgendjemand vor euch; denn der Herr, euer Gott, ist Gott oben im Himmel und unten auf Erden!
12 Und nun schwört mir doch bei dem Herrn, dass, so wie ich an euch Güte erwiesen habe, auch ihr am Haus[b] meines Vaters Güte erweisen werdet; und gebt mir ein sicheres Zeichen,
13 dass ihr meinen Vater, meine Mutter, meine Brüder und meine Schwestern samt allen ihren Angehörigen am Leben lassen und unsere Seelen vom Tod erretten werdet!
14 Und die Männer sprachen zu ihr: Wir bürgen mit unserem Leben für das eurige, sofern ihr diese unsere Sache nicht verratet! Und es soll geschehen: Wenn der Herr uns dieses Land gibt, so wollen wir an dir Güte und Treue erweisen!
15 Da ließ sie dieselben an einem Seil durch das Fenster hinunter; denn ihr Haus war an der Stadtmauer,[c] und sie wohnte an der Mauer.
16 Und sie sprach zu ihnen: Geht in das Bergland, dass euch eure Verfolger nicht begegnen, und verbergt euch dort drei Tage lang, bis eure Verfolger zurückgekehrt sind; danach geht eures Weges!
17 Und die Männer antworteten ihr: [Unter diesen Bedingungen] werden wir frei sein von deinem Eid, den du uns hast schwören lassen:
18 Siehe, wenn wir in das Land kommen, so sollst du diese Schnur aus karmesinrotem Faden in das Fenster knüpfen, durch das du uns hinabgelassen hast, und deinen Vater, deine Mutter, deine Brüder und das ganze Haus deines Vaters zu dir in das Haus versammeln.
19 Und wer dann zur Tür deines Hauses hinaus auf die Straße geht, dessen Blut sei auf seinem Haupt, wir aber unschuldig; wenn aber Hand gelegt wird an jemand von denen, die bei dir im Haus sind, so soll ihr Blut auf unserem Haupt sein.
20 Und wenn du etwas von dieser unserer Sache verraten wirst, so werden wir frei sein von deinem Eid, den du uns hast schwören lassen.
21 Da sprach sie: Es sei, wie ihr sagt!, und ließ sie gehen. Und sie gingen hin; sie aber knüpfte die karmesinrote Schnur ins Fenster.
22 Und jene gingen in das Bergland und blieben drei Tage lang dort, bis ihre Verfolger zurückgekehrt waren; und die Verfolger hatten sie auf dem ganzen Weg gesucht und doch nicht gefunden.
23 Und die beiden Männer kehrten zurück und stiegen vom Bergland hinunter; und sie setzten über und kamen zu Josua, dem Sohn Nuns, und erzählten ihm alles, was ihnen begegnet war.
24 Und sie sprachen zu Josua: Der Herr hat das ganze Land in unsere Hand gegeben; auch sind alle Einwohner des Landes verzagt vor uns!

2 Josué, fils de Nun, fit partir secrètement de Sittim deux espions en leur disant: «Allez explorer le pays, en particulier Jéricho.» Ils partirent et arrivèrent dans la maison d'une prostituée du nom de Rahab, et ils y couchèrent. 2 On dit au roi de Jéricho: «Des Israélites sont arrivés ici, cette nuit, pour explorer le pays.» 3 Le roi de Jéricho envoya dire à Rahab: «Fais sortir les hommes qui sont venus chez toi, qui sont entrés dans ta maison. En effet, c'est pour explorer tout le pays qu'ils sont venus.» 4 La femme prit les deux hommes et les cacha. Puis elle dit: «Il est vrai que ces hommes sont arrivés chez moi, mais je ne savais pas d'où ils étaient 5 et, au moment où l’on allait fermer la porte, à la tombée de la nuit, ils sont sortis. J'ignore où ils sont allés. Dépêchez-vous de les poursuivre et vous les rattraperez.» 6 Elle avait fait monter les espions sur le toit et les avait cachés sous des tiges de lin qu'elle y avait arrangées. 7 Ces hommes les poursuivirent par le chemin qui mène au gué du Jourdain et l'on ferma la porte après leur départ.
8 Avant que les espions se couchent, Rahab monta vers eux sur le toit 9 et leur dit: «Je le sais, l’Eternel vous a donné ce pays. La terreur que vous inspirez s’est emparée de nous et tous les habitants du pays tremblent devant vous. 10 En effet, nous avons appris comment, à votre sortie d'Egypte, l'Eternel a asséché devant vous l’eau de la mer des Roseaux et comment vous avez traité les deux rois des Amoréens de l'autre côté du Jourdain, Sihon et Og, que vous avez exterminés. 11 En l’apprenant, nous avons perdu courage et notre esprit est abattu devant vous, car c'est l'Eternel, votre Dieu, qui est Dieu en haut dans le ciel et en bas sur la terre. 12 Et maintenant, je vous en prie, jurez-moi par l'Eternel que vous aurez pour ma famille la même bonté que moi pour vous. Donnez-moi l'assurance que 13 vous laisserez vivre mon père, ma mère, mes frères, mes sœurs et tous les leurs et que vous nous sauverez de la mort.»
14 Ces hommes lui répondirent: «Nous le jurons sur notre propre vie si vous ne divulguez pas ce qui nous concerne. Et quand l'Eternel nous donnera le pays, nous agirons envers toi avec bonté et fidélité.»
15 Elle les fit descendre avec une corde par la fenêtre, car la maison qu'elle habitait était sur la muraille de la ville. 16 Elle leur dit: «Allez du côté de la montagne, sinon vos poursuivants risqueraient de vous rencontrer. Cachez-vous là pendant trois jours, jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient rentrés. Après cela, vous poursuivrez votre chemin.» 17 Ces hommes lui dirent: «Voici de quelle manière nous nous acquitterons du serment que tu nous as fait faire. 18 A notre entrée dans le pays, attache ce cordon de fil rouge à la fenêtre par laquelle tu nous fais descendre et rassemble avec toi dans la maison ton père, ta mère, tes frères et toute ta famille. 19 Si l’un d'eux passe la porte de ta maison pour aller dehors, son sang retombera sur sa tête et nous en serons innocents. En revanche, si l’on porte la main contre l'un de ceux qui seront avec toi dans la maison, quel qu’il soit, son sang retombera sur notre tête. 20 Si par ailleurs tu divulgues ce qui nous concerne, nous serons quittes du serment que tu nous as fait faire.» 21 Elle répondit: «Qu'il en soit comme vous l’avez dit.» Elle prit ainsi congé d'eux et ils s'en allèrent. Puis elle attacha le cordon rouge à la fenêtre.
22 Ils partirent et arrivèrent à la montagne, où ils restèrent trois jours, jusqu'à ce que ceux qui les poursuivaient soient rentrés. Ceux qui les poursuivaient les cherchèrent dans toute la région, mais sans les trouver. 23 Les deux hommes redescendirent de la montagne et passèrent le Jourdain. Ils vinrent vers Josué, fils de Nun, et lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était arrivé. 24 Ils lui dirent: «C’est certain, l'Eternel a livré tout le pays entre nos mains, et même tous les habitants du pays tremblent devant nous.»

2 Or Giosuè, figlio di Nun, mandò due, uomini da Scittim per spiare di nascosto, dicendo: Andate, ispezionate il paese e Gerico». Così essi andarono ed entrarono in casa di una prostituta, chiamata Rahab, e là alloggiarono.
2 La cosa fu riferita al re di Gerico, e gli fu detto: Ecco, alcuni dei figli d'Israele sono venuti qui questa notte per esplorare il paese».
3 Allora il re di Gerico mandò a dire a Rahab: Fa' uscire gli uomini che sono venuti da te e sono entrati in casa tua, perché sono venuti a esplorare tutto il paese».
4 Ma la donna prese i due uomini e li nascose; poi disse: E' vero quegli uomini sono venuti da me, ma non sapevo di dove fossero.
5 Al momento in cui si chiudeva la porta della città, quando era buio, quegli uomini sono usciti; dove siano andati non lo so; inseguiteli subito, perché li potete raggiungere».
6 (Essa invece li aveva fatti salire sul tetto e li aveva nascosti fra gli steli di lino, che aveva disteso sul tetto).
7 Essi allora li inseguirono sulla strada del Giordano, verso i guadi; e non appena gli inseguitori furono usciti la porta fu chiusa.
8 Or prima che le spie si addormentassero, Rahab salì da loro sul tetto,
9 e disse a quegli uomini: lo so che l'Eterno vi ha dato il paese, che il terrore di voi è caduto su di noi, e che tutti gli abitanti del paese vengono meno dalla paura davanti a voi.
10 Poiché noi abbiamo udito come l'Eterno asciugò le acque del Mar Rosso davanti a voi quando usciste dall'Egitto, e ciò che faceste ai due re degli Amorei, di là dal Giordano, Sihon e Og, che votaste allo sterminio.
11 All'udire queste cose, il nostro cuore è venuto meno e non è piú rimasto coraggio in alcuno a motivo di voi perché l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, è DIO lassú nei cieli e quaggiú sulla terra.
12 Or dunque, vi prego, giuratemi per l'Eterno che, come io vi ho usato clemenza, anche voi userete clemenza con la casa di mio padre; datemi quindi un segno sicuro
13 che lascerete in vita mio padre, mia madre, i miei fratelli, le mie sorelle e tutto ciò che appartiene loro, e che risparmierete le nostre vite dalla morte».
14 Quegli uomini le risposero: «Le nostre vite per le vostre, purché non sveliate questo nostro affare; e quando l'Eterno ci darà il paese, noi ti tratteremo con clemenza e lealtà».
15 Allora ella li calò dalla finestra con una corda, perché la sua casa si trovava sulle mura della città, ed essa abitava sulle mura.
16 E disse loro: «Andate verso il monte, affinché i vostri inseguitori non vi abbiano a trovare; e rimanete nascosti là tre giorni, finché i vostri inseguitori siano ritornati; poi andrete per la vostra strada».
17 Allora quegli uomini le dissero: «Noi saremo sciolti dal giuramento che ci hai fatto fare,
18 a meno che, quando entreremo nel paese, tu attacchi alla finestra per la quale ci fai scendere questa cordicella di filo scarlatto e raduni in casa presso di te tuo padre, tua madre, i tuoi fratelli e tutta la famiglia di tuo padre.
19 Se però qualcuno esce fuori dalla porta di casa tua, il suo sangue ricadrà sul suo capo, e noi non ne avremo colpa; ma il sangue di chiunque sarà con te in casa ricadrà sul nostro capo, se qualcuno gli metterà le mani addosso.
20 Ma se tu riveli questo nostro affare, saremo sciolti dal giuramento che ci hai fatto fare».
21 Ella disse: «Sia come avete detto». Poi li congedò, e quelli se ne andarono. Essa allora legò la cordicella scarlatta alla finestra.
22 Quelli dunque partirono e andarono sul monte, dove rimasero tre giorni, finché furono ritornati gli inseguitori; gli inseguitori li avevano cercati per tutta la strada, senza però trovarli.
23 Così i due uomini ritornarono, scesero dal monte, passarono il Giordano e vennero da Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e gli raccontarono tutto quanto era loro accaduto.
24 E dissero a Giosuè: «Certamente l'Eterno ha dato in nostra mano tutto il paese; e già tutti gli abitanti del paese vengono meno dalla paura davanti a noi».
