Land for Simeon's tribe

19 The second part of the land was for Simeon's tribe, clan by clan. Their land was in the middle of Judah's land. It included these towns:

Beersheba (also called Sheba), Moladah, Hazar-Shual, Balah, Ezem, Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah, Ziklag, Beth Marcaboth, Hazar-Susah, Beth Lebaoth and Sharuhen.

There were 13 towns and their villages.

He also gave them Ain, Rimmon, Ether and Ashan.

There were four towns and their villages. This included all the villages near them as far as Baalath Beer (also called Ramah, in the Negev).

That was the land that Joshua gave to the families of Simeon's tribe. Because Judah had received more land than they needed, Joshua took some of their land for Simeon. So Simeon's tribe lived inside the land that Joshua had given to Judah.[a]

Land for Zebulun's tribe

10 The next part of the land was for Zebulun's tribe, clan by clan. The border of their land went as far as Sarid. 11 Then it went west to Maralah, it touched Dabbesheth, and it went to the valley near Jokneam. 12 From Sarid their border went east to the land of Kisloth Tabor. Then it went to Daberath and it continued up to Japhia. 13 From there, it went east to Gath Hepher and Eth Kazin. It went on to Rimmon, and turned to go to Neah. 14 The border went north to Hannathon and stopped at the valley of Iphtah El. 15 Their land included these towns: Kattath, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah and Bethlehem.

There were 12 towns and their villages.

16 That was the land that Joshua gave to the families of Zebulun's tribe, as well as the towns and their villages.

Land for Issachar's tribe

17 The next part of the land was for Issachar's tribe, clan by clan. 18 Their land included Jezreel, Kesulloth, Shunem, 19 Hapharaim, Shion, Anaharath, 20 Rabbith, Kishion, Ebez, 21 Remeth, En Gannim, En Haddah and Beth Pazzez. 22 The border of their land touched Tabor, Shahazumah and Beth Shemesh. It ended at the Jordan River.

There were 16 towns and their villages.

23 That was the land that Joshua gave to the families of Issachar's tribe, as well as the towns and their villages.

Land for Asher's tribe

24 The next part of the land was for Asher's tribe, clan by clan. 25 Their land included Helkath, Hali, Beten, Acshaph, 26 Allammelech, Amad and Mishal. The west border of their land touched Carmel and Shihor Libnath. 27 Then it went east towards Beth Dagon, to touch Zebulun and the valley of Iphtah El. Then their border went north to Beth Emek and Neiel. It continued to Cabul in the north. 28 It went to Abdon, Rehob, Hammon and Kanah, as far as Great Sidon. 29 Then the border turned towards Ramah, and it went as far as the strong city of Tyre. Then it turned to Hosah and it ended at the Mediterranean Sea. Their towns included Hebel, Aczib, 30 Ummah, Aphek and Rehob. They received 22 towns and their villages.

31 That was the land that Joshua gave to the families of Asher's tribe, as well as the towns and their villages.

Land for Naphtali's tribe

32 The sixth part of the land was for Naphtali's tribe, clan by clan.

33 The border of their land went from Heleph and the big oak tree in Zaanannim. It went to Adami Nekeb and Jabneel, and it continued to Lakkum. It ended at the Jordan River. 34 The border turned west to Aznoth Tabor and it continued to Hukkok. It touched Zebulun's land on its south side, Asher's land on its west side and the Jordan River on its east side. 35 Their land included these strong cities: Ziddim, Zer, Hammath, Rakkath and Kinnereth, 36 Adamah, Ramah, Hazor, 37 Kedesh, Edrei, En Hazor, 38 Iron, Migdal El, Horem, Beth Anath and Beth Shemesh. They received 19 towns and their villages.

39 That was the land that Joshua gave to the families of Naphtali's tribe, as well as the towns and their villages.

Land for Dan's tribe

40 The seventh part of the land was for Dan's tribe, clan by clan. 41 Their land included Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir Shemesh, 42 Shaalabbin, Aijalon, Ithlah, 43 Elon, Timnah, Ekron, 44 Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath, 45 Jehud, Bene Berak, Gath-Rimmon, 46 Me Jarkon and Rakkon. They also received land in front of Joppa.

47 (But later, the people of Dan failed to take their land and keep it. So they went to attack Leshem. They took the town and they killed its people. Then they lived there themselves. They called the city Dan, after their ancestor.)

48 That was the land that Joshua gave to the families of Dan's tribe, as well as the towns and their villages.

Land for Joshua

49 When all the tribes had received their part of the land, the Israelites gave to Joshua, son of Nun, some land for himself. 50 This is what the Lord had told them to do. Joshua asked to have Timnah Serah in the hill country of Ephraim. So they gave it to him. He built up the town and he lived in it.

51 That is the list of all the pieces of land that each tribe received. Eleazar the priest, Joshua, son of Nun, and the Israelite leaders used lots to decide which part of the land was for each tribe. They did this in Shiloh, in front of the Tent of Meeting. The Lord was there with them. In that way, they finished giving each tribe a part of the land.

Footnotes

  1. 19:9 Simeon was the smallest tribe.

19 The second allotment went to the tribe of the Simeonites, clan by clan, and its inheritance lay within the lands of the people of Judah. Simeon had for its inheritance Beersheba, Sheba, Moladah, Hazar-shual, Balah, Ezem, Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah, Ziklag, Beth-marcaboth, Hazar-susah, Beth-lebaoth, and Sharuhen—13 cities with their surrounding villages; also Ain, Rimmon, Ether, and Ashan—four towns with their surrounding villages; also all the villages surrounding these towns as far as Baalath-beer, Ramah of the Negev. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the Simeonites, clan by clan. The inheritance of the people of Simeon was taken from the people of Judah because the allotment of the people of Judah was too large for them. So the tribe of Simeon received an inheritance within Judah’s inheritance.

Simeon receives no land allotment for himself. He is to be scattered within Judah’s territory.

10 The third lot fell to the people of Zebulun, clan by clan. The boundary of its inheritance stretched as far as Sarid, 11 then it climbed up westward to Maralah and brushed Dabbesheth, then on to the wadi that is east of Jokneam. 12 From Sarid it turned in the other direction eastward toward the sunrise to the frontier of Chisloth-tabor; and from there it went to Daberath, then up to Japhia. 13 From there it went eastward to Gath-hepher, then Eth-kazin, and going on to Rimmon, it curved toward Neah. 14 Then on the north, the boundary curved toward Hannathon and ended at the valley of Iphtahel 15 with Kattah, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem—12 cities with their surrounding villages. 16 This, then, was the land granted to the people of Zebulun, clan by clan: these cities with their surrounding villages.

17 The fourth lot went to the people of Issachar, clan by clan. 18 The territory that they inherited included Jezreel, Chesulloth, Shunem, 19 Hapharaim, Shion, Anaharath, 20 Rabbith, Kishion, Ebez, 21 Remeth, En-gannim, En-haddah, Beth-pazzez. 22 The boundary extended up to Tabor, Shahazumah, and Beth-shemesh, and ended at the Jordan—16 cities with their surrounding villages. 23 This, then, was the land granted to the tribe of the Issacharites, clan by clan: these cities with their surrounding villages.

24 The fifth lot was drawn for the tribe of the Asherites, clan by clan. 25 The boundary of its inheritance included Helkath, Hali, Beten, Achshaph, 26 Allammelech, Amad, and Mishal. It reached Carmel on the west and the brook Shihor-libnath, 27 then it turned eastward toward Beth-dagon and brushed Zebulun and the valley of Iphtahel north to Beth-emek and Neiel; then it continued on north passing by Cabul on the left, 28 to Ebron,[a] Rehob, Hammon, Kanah, as far as Sidon the Great. 29 The border turned to Ramah and the fortified city of Tyre. Then it turned to Hosah and ended at the sea near the region of Achzib; 30 also, Ummah, Aphek, and Rehob—22 cities with their surrounding villages. 31 This, then, was the land allotted to the tribe of the Asherites, clan by clan: these cities and their surrounding villages.

32 The sixth lot was drawn for the people of the Naphtalites, clan by clan; 33 and its boundary ran from Heleph and the oak in Zaanannim, with Adami-nekeb and Jabneel, as far as Lakkum; it ended at the Jordan. 34 The western boundary ran from Heleph to Aznoth-tabor and went from there to Hukkok, brushing the inheritance of Zebulun to the south, Asher on the west, and Judah on the east at the Jordan. 35 The fortified cities were Ziddim, Zer, Hammath, Rakkath, Chinnereth, 36 Adamah, Ramah, Hazor, 37 Kedesh, Edrei, En-hazor, 38 Yiron, Migdal-el, Horem, Beth-anath, and Beth-shemesh—19 cities in all with their surrounding villages. 39 This, then, was the land granted to the tribe of the Naphtalites, clan by clan: these cities with their surrounding villages.

40 The seventh lot fell to the tribe of the Danites, clan by clan; 41 and the territory of its inheritance included Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir-shemesh, 42 Shaalabbin, Aijalon, Ithlah, 43 Elon, Timnah, Ekron, 44 Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath, 45 Jehud, Bene-berak, Gath-rimmon, 46 and Me-jarkon and Rakkon on the border opposite Joppa. 47 The people of Dan had a difficult time subduing their allotted territory so they went up and attacked Leshem, and when they had captured it and killed its inhabitants, they settled there, renaming Leshem “Dan,” after their ancestor. 48 This, then, was the land granted to the tribe of the Danites, clan by clan: these cities with their surrounding villages.

49 When at last they had finished distributing the territories of the land as inheritances, the Israelites gave Joshua, son of Nun, a special inheritance among them. 50 As the Eternal had commanded, they gave Joshua the town he had asked for, Timnath-serah in the highlands of Ephraim. So he built a city and settled there.

51 These, then, are the inheritances that the priest Eleazar, Joshua (son of Nun), and the heads of the leaders of the Israelite tribes distributed by drawing lots at Shiloh. All this was done in the presence of the Eternal at the entrance of the congregation tent. And the division of the land was complete.

Simeon’s Inheritance

19 The second lot came out for Simeon, for the tribe of his descendants by their clans, but their inheritance was within the inheritance given to Judah’s descendants. Their inheritance included

Beer-sheba (or Sheba(A)), Moladah, Hazar-shual, Balah, Ezem, Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah, Ziklag, Beth-marcaboth, Hazar-susah, Beth-lebaoth, and Sharuhen – thirteen cities, with their settlements; Ain, Rimmon, Ether, and Ashan – four cities, with their settlements; and all the settlements surrounding these cities as far as Baalath-beer (Ramah in the south[a]).

This was the inheritance of the tribe of Simeon’s descendants by their clans. The inheritance of Simeon’s descendants was within the territory of Judah’s descendants, because the share for Judah’s descendants was too large. So Simeon’s descendants received an inheritance within Judah’s portion.

Zebulun’s Inheritance

10 The third lot came up for Zebulun’s descendants by their clans.

The territory of their inheritance stretched as far as Sarid; 11 their border went up westwards to Maralah, reached Dabbesheth, and met the brook east of Jokneam. 12 From Sarid, it turned due east along the border of Chisloth-tabor, went to Daberath, and went up to Japhia. 13 From there, it went due east to Gath-hepher and to Eth-kazin; it extended to Rimmon, curving around to Neah. 14 The border then circled round Neah on the north to Hannathon and ended at Iphtah-el Valley, 15 along with Kattath, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem – twelve cities, with their settlements.

16 This was the inheritance of Zebulun’s descendants by their clans, these cities, with their settlements.

Issachar’s Inheritance

17 The fourth lot came out for the tribe of Issachar’s descendants by their clans.

18 Their territory went to Jezreel, and included Chesulloth, Shunem,(B) 19 Hapharaim, Shion, Anaharath, 20 Rabbith, Kishion, Ebez, 21 Remeth, En-gannim, En-haddah, and Beth-pazzez. 22 The border reached Tabor, Shahazumah, and Beth-shemesh, and ended at the Jordan – sixteen cities, with their settlements.

23 This was the inheritance of the tribe of Issachar’s descendants by their clans, the cities, with their settlements.

Asher’s Inheritance

24 The fifth lot came out for the tribe of Asher’s descendants by their clans.

25 Their boundary included Helkath, Hali, Beten, Achshaph, 26 Allammelech, Amad, and Mishal and reached westwards to Carmel and Shihor-libnath. 27 It turned eastwards to Beth-dagon, reached Zebulun and Iphtah-el Valley, north towards Beth-emek and Neiel, and went north to Cabul,(C) 28 Ebron, Rehob, Hammon, and Kanah, as far as greater Sidon. 29 The boundary then turned to Ramah as far as the fortified city of Tyre; it turned back to Hosah and ended at the Mediterranean Sea, including Mahalab, Achzib,[b] 30 Ummah, Aphek, and Rehob – twenty-two cities, with their settlements.

31 This was the inheritance of the tribe of Asher’s descendants by their clans, these cities with their settlements.

Naphtali’s Inheritance

32 The sixth lot came out for Naphtali’s descendants by their clans.

33 Their boundary went from Heleph and from the oak in Zaanannim, including Adami-nekeb and Jabneel, as far as Lakkum, and ended at the Jordan. 34 To the west, the boundary turned to Aznoth-tabor and went from there to Hukkok, reaching Zebulun on the south, Asher on the west, and Judah[c] at the Jordan on the east. 35 The fortified cities were Ziddim, Zer, Hammath, Rakkath, Chinnereth, 36 Adamah, Ramah, Hazor, 37 Kedesh, Edrei, En-hazor, 38 Iron, Migdal-el, Horem, Beth-anath, and Beth-shemesh – nineteen cities, with their settlements.

39 This was the inheritance of the tribe of Naphtali’s descendants by their clans, the cities with their settlements.

Dan’s Inheritance

40 The seventh lot came out for the tribe of Dan’s descendants by their clans.

41 The territory of their inheritance included Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir-shemesh, 42 Shaalabbin, Aijalon,(D) Ithlah, 43 Elon, Timnah, Ekron, 44 Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath, 45 Jehud, Bene-berak, Gath-rimmon, 46 Me-jarkon, and Rakkon, with the territory facing Joppa.(E)

47 When the territory of the descendants of Dan slipped out of their control, they went up and fought against Leshem, captured it, and struck it down with the sword. So they took possession of it, lived there, and renamed Leshem after their ancestor Dan.(F) 48 This was the inheritance of the tribe of Dan’s descendants by their clans, these cities with their settlements.

Joshua’s Inheritance

49 When they had finished distributing the land into its territories, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them. 50 By the Lord’s command, they gave him the city Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim,(G) which he requested. He rebuilt the city and lived in it.

51 These were the portions that the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the family heads distributed to the Israelite tribes by lot at Shiloh in the Lord’s presence at the entrance to the tent of meeting.(H) So they finished dividing up the land.
