Rest of the Land Divided

18 Then the whole congregation of the sons of Israel assembled themselves at ^(A)Shiloh, and set up the tent of meeting there; and the land was subdued before them.

² There remained among the sons of Israel seven tribes who had not divided their inheritance. ³ So Joshua said to the sons of Israel, “^(B)How long will you put off entering to take possession of the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you? ⁴ Provide for yourselves three men from ^[a]each tribe that I may send them, and that they may arise and walk through the land and write a description of it according to their inheritance; then they shall ^[b]return to me. ⁵ They shall divide it into seven portions; ^(C)Judah shall stay in its territory on the south, and the house of Joseph shall stay in their territory on the north. ⁶ You shall describe the land in seven divisions, and bring the description here to me. ^(D)I will cast lots for you here before the Lord our God. ⁷ For ^(E)the Levites have no portion among you, because the priesthood of the Lord is ^[c]their inheritance. Gad and Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh also have received their inheritance eastward beyond the Jordan, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave them.”

⁸ Then the men arose and went, and Joshua commanded those who went to describe the land, saying, “Go and walk through the land and describe it, and return to me; then I will cast lots for you here before the Lord in ^(F)Shiloh.” ⁹ So the men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities in seven divisions in a book; and they came to Joshua to the camp at Shiloh. ¹⁰ And ^(G)Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the Lord, and there Joshua divided the land to the sons of Israel according to their divisions.

The Territory of Benjamin

¹¹ Now the lot of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin came up according to their families, and the territory of their lot ^[d]lay between the sons of Judah and the sons of Joseph. ^12 (H)Their border on the north side was from the Jordan, then the border went up to the side of Jericho on the north, and went up through the hill country westward, and ^[e]it ended at the wilderness of Beth-aven. ¹³ From there the border continued to ^(I)Luz, to the side of Luz (that is, Bethel) southward; and the border went down to Ataroth-addar, near the hill which lies on the south of ^(J)lower Beth-horon. ¹⁴ The border extended from there and turned round on the west side southward, from the hill which lies before Beth-horon southward; and ^[f]it ended at Kiriath-baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the west side. ¹⁵ Then the ^(K)south side was from the edge of Kiriath-jearim, and the border went westward and went to the fountain of the waters of Nephtoah. ¹⁶ The border went down to the edge of the hill which is in the ^(L)valley of Ben-hinnom, which is in the valley of Rephaim northward; and it went down to the valley of Hinnom, to the slope of the Jebusite southward, and went down to En-rogel. ¹⁷ It extended northward and went to En-shemesh and went to Geliloth, which is opposite the ascent of Adummim, and it went down to the ^(M)stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. ¹⁸ It continued to the side in front of the Arabah northward and went down to the Arabah. ¹⁹ The border continued to the side of Beth-hoglah northward; and the ^[g]border ended at the north bay of the Salt Sea, at the south end of the Jordan. This was the south border. ²⁰ Moreover, the Jordan was its border on the east side. This was the inheritance of the sons of Benjamin, according to their families and according to its borders all around.

²¹ Now the cities of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin according to their families were Jericho and Beth-hoglah and Emek-keziz, ²² and Beth-arabah and Zemaraim and Bethel, ²³ and Avvim and Parah and Ophrah, ²⁴ and Chephar-ammoni and Ophni and ^(N)Geba; twelve cities with their villages. ²⁵ Gibeon and Ramah and Beeroth, ²⁶ and Mizpeh and Chephirah and Mozah, ²⁷ and Rekem and Irpeel and Taralah, ²⁸ and ^(O)Zelah, Haeleph and the Jebusite (that is, Jerusalem), Gibeah, Kiriath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the ^(P)sons of Benjamin according to their families.

Territory of Simeon

19 Then the second lot ^[h]fell to Simeon, to the tribe of the sons of Simeon according to their families, and their inheritance was in the midst of the inheritance of the sons of Judah. ² So they had as their inheritance Beersheba or ^[i]Sheba and Moladah, ³ and Hazar-shual and Balah and Ezem, ⁴ and Eltolad and Bethul and Hormah, ⁵ and Ziklag and Beth-marcaboth and Hazar-susah, ⁶ and Beth-lebaoth and Sharuhen; thirteen cities with their villages; ⁷ Ain, Rimmon and Ether and Ashan; four cities with their villages; ⁸ and all the villages which were around these cities as far as Baalath-beer, Ramah of the ^[j]Negev. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Simeon according to their families. ⁹ The inheritance of the sons of Simeon was taken from the portion of the sons of Judah, for the share of the sons of Judah was too large for them; so the sons of Simeon received an inheritance in the midst of ^[k]Judah’s inheritance.

Territory of Zebulun

¹⁰ Now the third lot came up for the sons of Zebulun according to their families. And the territory of their inheritance was as far as Sarid. ¹¹ Then their border went up to the west and to Maralah, it then ^[l]touched Dabbesheth and reached to the ^[m]brook that is before Jokneam. ¹² Then it turned from Sarid to the east toward the sunrise as far as the border of Chisloth-tabor, and it proceeded to Daberath and ^[n]up to Japhia. ¹³ From there it continued eastward toward the sunrise to Gath-hepher, to Eth-kazin, and it proceeded to Rimmon ^[o]which stretches to Neah. ¹⁴ The border circled around it on the north to Hannathon, and ^[p]it ended at the valley of Iphtahel. ¹⁵ Included also were Kattah and Nahalal and Shimron and Idalah and Bethlehem; twelve cities with their villages. ¹⁶ This was the inheritance of the sons of Zebulun according to their families, these cities with their villages.

Territory of Issachar

¹⁷ The fourth lot ^[q]fell to Issachar, to the sons of Issachar according to their families. ¹⁸ Their territory was to Jezreel and included Chesulloth and ^(Q)Shunem, ¹⁹ and Hapharaim and Shion and Anaharath, ²⁰ and Rabbith and Kishion and Ebez, ²¹ and Remeth and En-gannim and En-haddah and Beth-pazzez. ²² The border reached to ^(R)Tabor and Shahazumah and Beth-shemesh, and ^[r]their border ended at the Jordan; sixteen cities with their villages. ²³ This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Issachar according to their families, the cities with their villages.

Territory of Asher

²⁴ Now the fifth lot ^[s]fell to the tribe of the sons of Asher according to their families. ²⁵ Their territory was Helkath and Hali and Beten and Achshaph, ²⁶ and Allammelech and Amad and Mishal; and it reached to Carmel on the west and to Shihor-libnath. ²⁷ It turned toward the ^[t]east to Beth-dagon and reached to Zebulun, and to the valley of Iphtahel northward to Beth-emek and Neiel; then it proceeded on ^[u]north to ^(S)Cabul, ²⁸ and Ebron and Rehob and Hammon and Kanah, as far as Great ^(T)Sidon. ²⁹ The border turned to Ramah and to the fortified city of Tyre; then the border turned to Hosah, and ^[v]it ended at the sea by the region of ^(U)Achzib. ³⁰ Included also were Ummah, and Aphek and Rehob; twenty-two cities with their villages. ³¹ This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages.

Territory of Naphtali

³² The sixth lot ^[w]fell to the sons of Naphtali; to the sons of Naphtali according to their families. ³³ Their border was from Heleph, from the oak in Zaanannim and Adami-nekeb and Jabneel, as far as Lakkum, and ^[x]it ended at the Jordan. ³⁴ Then the border turned westward to Aznoth-tabor and proceeded from there to Hukkok; and it reached to Zebulun on the south and ^[y]touched Asher on the west, and to Judah at the Jordan toward the ^[z]east. ³⁵ The fortified cities were Ziddim, Zer and ^(V)Hammath, Rakkath and ^(W)Chinnereth, ³⁶ and Adamah and Ramah and Hazor, ³⁷ and Kedesh and Edrei and En-hazor, ³⁸ and Yiron and Migdal-el, Horem and Beth-anath and Beth-shemesh; nineteen cities with their villages. ³⁹ This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Naphtali according to their families, the cities with their villages.

Territory of Dan

⁴⁰ The seventh lot ^[aa]fell to the tribe of the sons of Dan according to their families. ⁴¹ The territory of their inheritance was Zorah and Eshtaol and Ir-shemesh, ⁴² and Shaalabbin and Aijalon and Ithlah, ⁴³ and Elon and Timnah and Ekron, ⁴⁴ and Eltekeh and Gibbethon and Baalath, ⁴⁵ and Jehud and Bene-berak and Gath-rimmon, ⁴⁶ and Me-jarkon and Rakkon, with the territory over against ^[ab]Joppa. ⁴⁷ The territory of the ^(X)sons of Dan proceeded ^[ac]beyond them; for the sons of Dan went up and fought with Leshem and captured it. Then they struck it with the edge of the sword and possessed it and ^[ad]settled in it; and they called ^[ae](Y)Leshem Dan after the name of Dan their father. ⁴⁸ This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.

⁴⁹ When they finished apportioning the land for inheritance by its borders, the sons of Israel gave an inheritance in their midst to Joshua the son of Nun. ⁵⁰ In accordance with the ^[af]command of the Lord they gave him the city for which he asked, ^(Z)Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim. So he built the city and ^[ag]settled in it.

^51 (AA)These are the inheritances which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the ^[ah]households of the tribes of the sons of Israel distributed by lot in Shiloh before the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting. So they finished dividing the land.

Six Cities of Refuge

20 Then the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying, ² “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘^[ai]Designate ^(AB)the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you ^[aj]through Moses, ³ that the manslayer who ^[ak]kills any person unintentionally, without premeditation, may flee there, and they shall become your refuge from the avenger of blood. ⁴ He shall flee to one of these cities, and shall stand at the entrance of the ^(AC)gate of the city and state his case in the hearing of the elders of that city; and they shall ^[al]take him into the city to them and give him a place, so that he may dwell among them. ⁵ Now ^(AD)if the avenger of blood pursues him, then they shall not deliver the manslayer into his hand, because he struck his neighbor without premeditation and did not hate him beforehand. ⁶ He shall dwell in that city ^(AE)until he stands before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the one who is high priest in those days. Then the manslayer shall ^[am]return to his own city and to his own house, to the city from which he fled.’”

⁷ So they ^[an]set apart ^(AF)Kedesh in ^[ao]Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali and Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in ^(AG)the hill country of Judah. ⁸ Beyond the Jordan east of Jericho, they ^[ap]designated Bezer in the wilderness on the plain from the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan from the tribe of Manasseh. ^9 (AH)These were the appointed cities for all the sons of Israel and for the stranger who sojourns among them, that whoever ^[aq]kills any person unintentionally may flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood until he stands before the congregation.

The Deity of Jesus Christ

1 ^(A)In the beginning was ^(B)the Word, and the Word was ^(C)with God, and ^(D)the Word was God. ^2 [a]He was in the beginning with God. ^3 (E)All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. ^4 (F)In Him was life, and the life was ^(G)the Light of men. ^5 (H)The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not ^[b]comprehend it.

The Witness John

⁶ There ^[c]came a man sent from God, whose name was ^(I)John. ^7 [d]He came ^[e](J)as a witness, to testify about the Light, ^(K)so that all might believe through him. ^8 [f](L)He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

⁹ There was ^(M)the true Light ^[g]which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. ¹⁰ He was in the world, and ^(N)the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. ¹¹ He came to His ^[h]own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. ¹² But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become ^(O)children of God, even ^(P)to those who believe in His name, ^13 (Q)who were ^[i]born, not of ^[j]blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

The Word Made Flesh

¹⁴ And ^(R)the Word ^(S)became flesh, and ^[k](T)dwelt among us, and ^(U)we saw His glory, glory as of ^[l]the only begotten from the Father, full of ^(V)grace and ^(W)truth. ¹⁵ John *^(X)testified about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘^(Y)He who comes after me ^[m]has a higher rank than I, ^(Z)for He existed before me.’” ¹⁶ For of His ^(AA)fullness ^[n]we have all received, and ^[o]grace upon grace. ¹⁷ For ^(AB)the Law was given through Moses; ^(AC)grace and ^(AD)truth ^[p]were realized through Jesus Christ. ^18 (AE)No one has seen God at any time; ^(AF)the only begotten God who is ^(AG)in the bosom of the Father, ^(AH)He has explained Him.

The Testimony of John

¹⁹ This is ^(AI)the testimony of John, when ^(AJ)the Jews sent to him priests and Levites ^(AK)from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” ²⁰ And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “^(AL)I am not ^[q]the Christ.” ²¹ They asked him, “What then? Are you ^(AM)Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you ^(AN)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” ²² Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” ²³ He said, “I am ^(AO)a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

²⁴ Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. ²⁵ They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the ^[r]Christ, nor Elijah, nor ^(AP)the Prophet?” ²⁶ John answered them saying, “^(AQ)I baptize ^[s]in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. ²⁷ It is ^(AR)He who comes after me, the ^(AS)thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” ²⁸ These things took place in Bethany ^(AT)beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

²⁹ The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, “Behold, ^(AU)the Lamb of God who ^(AV)takes away the sin of the world! ³⁰ This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘^(AW)After me comes a Man who ^[t]has a higher rank than I, ^(AX)for He existed before me.’ ³¹ I did not recognize ^[u]Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing ^[v]in water.” ³² John ^(AY)testified saying, “^(AZ)I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. ³³ I did not recognize ^[w]Him, but He who sent me to baptize ^[x]in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, ^(BA)this is the One who baptizes ^[y]in the Holy Spirit.’ ³⁴ I myself have seen, and have testified that this is ^(BB)the Son of God.”

Jesus’ Public Ministry, First Converts

³⁵ Again ^(BC)the next day John was standing ^[z]with two of his disciples, ³⁶ and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, ^(BD)the Lamb of God!” ³⁷ The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. ³⁸ And Jesus turned and saw them following, and *said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “^(BE)Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” ³⁹ He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the ^[aa]tenth hour. ^40 (BF)One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. ⁴¹ He *found first his own brother Simon and *said to him, “We have found the ^(BG)Messiah” (which translated means ^[ab]Christ). ⁴² He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of ^[ac](BH)John; you shall be called ^(BI)Cephas” (which is translated ^[ad](BJ)Peter).

^43 (BK)The next day He purposed to go into ^(BL)Galilee, and He *found ^(BM)Philip. And Jesus *said to him, “^(BN)Follow Me.” ⁴⁴ Now ^(BO)Philip was from ^(BP)Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. ^45 (BQ)Philip *found ^(BR)Nathanael and *said to him, “We have found Him of whom ^(BS)Moses in the Law and also ^(BT)the Prophets wrote—Jesus of ^(BU)Nazareth, ^(BV)the son of Joseph.” ⁴⁶ Nathanael said to him, “^(BW)Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” ^(BX)Philip *said to him, “Come and see.” ⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said of him, “Behold, an ^(BY)Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” ⁴⁸ Nathanael *said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before ^(BZ)Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” ⁴⁹ Nathanael answered Him, “^(CA)Rabbi, You are ^(CB)the Son of God; You are the ^(CC)King of Israel.” ⁵⁰ Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” ⁵¹ And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see ^(CD)the heavens opened and ^(CE)the angels of God ascending and descending on ^(CF)the Son of Man.”
