17 This was the allotment for the tribe of Manasseh(A) as Joseph’s firstborn,(B) that is, for Makir,(C) Manasseh’s firstborn. Makir was the ancestor of the Gileadites, who had received Gilead(D) and Bashan(E) because the Makirites were great soldiers. 2 So this allotment was for the rest of the people of Manasseh(F)—the clans of Abiezer,(G) Helek, Asriel,(H) Shechem, Hepher(I) and Shemida.(J) These are the other male descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph by their clans.
3 Now Zelophehad son of Hepher,(K) the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons but only daughters,(L) whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. 4 They went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance along with the brothers of their father, according to the Lord’s command.(M) 5 Manasseh’s share consisted of ten tracts of land besides Gilead and Bashan east of the Jordan,(N) 6 because the daughters of the tribe of Manasseh received an inheritance among the sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the descendants of Manasseh.
7 The territory of Manasseh extended from Asher(O) to Mikmethath(P) east of Shechem.(Q) The boundary ran southward from there to include the people living at En Tappuah. 8 (Manasseh had the land of Tappuah, but Tappuah(R) itself, on the boundary of Manasseh, belonged to the Ephraimites.) 9 Then the boundary continued south to the Kanah Ravine.(S) There were towns belonging to Ephraim lying among the towns of Manasseh, but the boundary of Manasseh was the northern side of the ravine and ended at the Mediterranean Sea. 10 On the south the land belonged to Ephraim, on the north to Manasseh. The territory of Manasseh reached the Mediterranean Sea and bordered Asher(T) on the north and Issachar(U) on the east.(V)
11 Within Issachar(W) and Asher, Manasseh also had Beth Shan,(X) Ibleam(Y) and the people of Dor,(Z) Endor,(AA) Taanach(AB) and Megiddo,(AC) together with their surrounding settlements (the third in the list is Naphoth[a]).(AD)
12 Yet the Manassites were not able(AE) to occupy these towns, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that region. 13 However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labor but did not drive them out completely.(AF)
14 The people of Joseph said to Joshua, “Why have you given us only one allotment and one portion for an inheritance? We are a numerous people, and the Lord has blessed us abundantly.”(AG)
15 “If you are so numerous,” Joshua answered, “and if the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go up into the forest(AH) and clear land for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzites(AI) and Rephaites.(AJ)”
16 The people of Joseph replied, “The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who live in the plain have chariots fitted with iron,(AK) both those in Beth Shan(AL) and its settlements and those in the Valley of Jezreel.”(AM)
17 But Joshua said to the tribes of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh—“You are numerous and very powerful. You will have not only one allotment(AN) 18 but the forested hill country(AO) as well. Clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours; though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron(AP) and though they are strong, you can drive them out.”

El territorio de Manasés
17 También a la tribu de Manasés se le asignó su propio territorio, porque él era el primogénito de José. A Maquir, primogénito de Manasés y antepasado de los galaaditas, se le concedió Galaad y Basán por ser hombre de guerra. 2 Los demás clanes de la tribu de Manasés también recibieron sus territorios: Abiezer, Jélec, Asriel, Siquén, Héfer y Semidá. Estos eran descendientes de Manasés, hijo de José.
3 Sucedió que Zelofejad, hijo de Héfer, hijo de Galaad, hijo de Maquir e hijo de Manasés, solo tuvo hijas, cuyos nombres eran Majlá, Noa, Joglá, Milca y Tirsá. 4 Ellas se presentaron ante el sacerdote Eleazar, ante Josué, hijo de Nun, y ante los jefes de Israel y dijeron: «El Señor ordenó a Moisés que nos diera tierras en los territorios asignados como herencia a nuestro clan». Entonces Josué hizo tal como el Señor había ordenado. 5 La tribu de Manasés recibió diez porciones de tierra, además de los territorios de Galaad y Basán, que están al lado oriental del Jordán. 6 Esto se debió a que las hijas de Manasés recibieron tierras como herencia, además de las repartidas a los descendientes varones. Galaad fue asignada a los otros descendientes de Manasés.
7 El territorio de Manasés abarcaba desde Aser hasta Micmetat, ubicada al este de Siquén. De allí la frontera seguía hacia el sur, hasta las tierras pertenecientes a los habitantes de En Tapúaj. 8 A Manasés le pertenecían también las tierras de Tapúaj, pero la ciudad de Tapúaj, ubicada en los límites de Manasés, era de los descendientes de Efraín. 9 La frontera continuaba hacia el sur, por el lado norte del arroyo de Caná, hasta llegar al mar Mediterráneo. En esa zona, varias ciudades de la tribu de Efraín se mezclaban con ciudades pertenecientes a Manasés. 10 Los territorios del sur pertenecían a Efraín y los del norte, a Manasés. El territorio de Manasés llegaba hasta el mar Mediterráneo y bordeaba, por el norte, con la tribu de Aser, y por el este, con la de Isacar.
11 Dentro de las fronteras de Isacar y Aser, la tribu de Manasés tenía las siguientes ciudades con sus poblaciones: Betseán, Ibleam, Dor, Endor, Tanac y Meguido. La tercera ciudad de la lista era Nafot.
12 Los miembros de la tribu de Manasés no pudieron habitar estas ciudades, porque los cananeos estaban decididos a vivir en ellas. 13 Cuando los israelitas se hicieron fuertes, redujeron a los cananeos a trabajos forzados, pero no los expulsaron totalmente de esas tierras.
14 Las tribus de José reprocharon a Josué:
—¿Por qué nos has dado solo una parte del territorio? Nosotros somos numerosos y el Señor nos ha bendecido ricamente.
15 Entonces Josué respondió:
—Ya que son tan numerosos y encuentran que la región montañosa de Efraín es demasiado pequeña para ustedes, vayan a la zona de los bosques que están en territorio ferezeo y refaíta y limpien el terreno para que habiten allá.
16 Los descendientes de José replicaron:
—La región montañosa nos queda muy pequeña y los cananeos que viven en el llano poseen carros de hierro, tanto los de Betseán y sus poblaciones como los del valle de Jezrel.
17 Pero Josué animó a las tribus de Efraín y Manasés, descendientes de José:
—Ustedes son numerosos y tienen mucho poder. No se quedarán con un solo territorio, 18 sino que poseerán la región de los bosques. Limpien esa región y ocúpenla hasta sus límites más lejanos. Y a pesar de que los cananeos tengan carros de hierro y sean muy fuertes, ustedes los podrán expulsar.
