The Sun Stands Still
10 As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction,[a] (A)doing to Ai and its king (B)as he had done to Jericho and its king, and (C)how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, 2 (D)he[b] feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were warriors. 3 So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, 4 “Come up to me and help me, and let us strike Gibeon. For (E)it has made peace with Joshua and with the people of Israel.” 5 Then the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, (F)gathered their forces and went up with all their armies and encamped against Gibeon and made war against it.
6 And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua (G)at the camp in Gilgal, saying, “Do not relax your hand from your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country are gathered against us.” 7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and (H)all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. 8 And the Lord said to Joshua, (I)“Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands. (J)Not a man of them shall stand before you.” 9 So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all night from Gilgal. 10 (K)And the Lord threw them into a panic before Israel, who[c] struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and chased them by the way of (L)the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. 11 And as they fled before Israel, while they were (M)going down the ascent of Beth-horon, (N)the Lord threw down large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died because of the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword.
12 At that time Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel,
(O)“Sun, stand still at Gibeon,
and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.”
13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped,
until the nation took vengeance on their enemies.
Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day. 14 (P)There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for (Q)the Lord fought for Israel.
15 So (R)Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
Five Amorite Kings Executed
16 These five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at (S)Makkedah. 17 And it was told to Joshua, “The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.” 18 And Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave and set men by it to guard them, 19 but do not stay there yourselves. Pursue your enemies; (T)attack their rear guard. Do not let them enter their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.” 20 When Joshua and the sons of Israel had finished striking them with a great blow (U)until they were wiped out, and when the remnant that remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, 21 then all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah. (V)Not a man moved his tongue against any of the people of Israel.
22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me from the cave.” 23 And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 24 And when they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, “Come near; put your feet on the necks of these kings.” Then they came near and put their feet on their necks. 25 And Joshua said to them, (W)“Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous. (X)For thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.” 26 And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees. And (Y)they hung on the trees until evening. 27 But at the time of the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and (Z)they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.
28 As for (AA)Makkedah, Joshua captured it on that day and struck it, and its king, with the edge of the sword. He devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah (AB)just as he had done to the king of Jericho.
Conquest of Southern Canaan
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to (AC)Libnah and fought against Libnah. 30 And the Lord gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel. And he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left none remaining in it. And he did to its king (AD)as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Libnah to (AE)Lachish and laid siege to it and fought against it. 32 And the Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah.
33 Then Horam king of (AF)Gezer came up to help Lachish. And Joshua struck him and his people, until he left none remaining.
34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lachish to (AG)Eglon. And they laid siege to it and fought against it. 35 And they captured it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword. And he devoted every person in it to destruction that day, as he had done to Lachish.
36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to (AH)Hebron. And they fought against it 37 and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it. He left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and devoted it to destruction and every person in it.
38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned back to (AI)Debir and fought against it 39 and he captured it with its king and all its towns. And they struck them with the edge of the sword and devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. Just as he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and to its king.
40 So Joshua struck the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland (AJ)and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, (AK)but devoted to destruction all that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel commanded. 41 And Joshua struck them from (AL)Kadesh-barnea as far as Gaza, and all the country of (AM)Goshen, as far as Gibeon. 42 And Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, (AN)because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. 43 (AO)Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

10 Cuando Adonisedec, el rey de Jerusalén, supo que Josué había tomado la ciudad de Hai, y que la había dejado en ruinas (como lo había hecho con Jericó y con su rey, lo mismo que con Hai), y que los habitantes de Gabaón habían hecho la paz con los israelitas y que vivían entre ellos, 2 se llenó de temor. Y es que Gabaón era una ciudad real, mucho más grande que Hai, y sus hombres eran muy fuertes. 3 Por eso el rey Adonisedec envió mensajes a Hoán, Pirán, Jafía y Debir, que eran los reyes de Hebrón, Jarmut, Laquis y Eglón, en ese orden, en los que les decía:
4 «Vengan en mi ayuda. Vamos a combatir a Gabaón, porque ha hecho una alianza de paz con Josué y con el pueblo de Israel.»
5 Entonces los reyes de Jerusalén, Hebrón, Jarmut, Laquis y Eglón, que eran los cinco reyes de los amorreos, se aliaron y con todos sus ejércitos fueron y acamparon cerca de Gabaón, para pelear contra ella. 6 Por su parte, los habitantes de Gabaón enviaron mensajeros al campamento de Josué en Gilgal, para decirle:
«No nos niegues tu ayuda, pues somos tus siervos. Ven pronto a defendernos, pues todos los reyes de los amorreos, que habitan en las montañas, se han aliado contra nosotros.»
7 Josué salió entonces de Gilgal con su ejército de guerreros y con sus hombres más aguerridos. 8 Y el Señor le dijo a Josué:
«No les tengas miedo, que yo te los he entregado. Ninguno de ellos podrá vencerte.»
9 Josué avanzó toda esa noche desde Gilgal, y les cayó por sorpresa. 10 Cuando los reyes vieron al pueblo de Israel, el Señor hizo que ellos se llenaran de gran aflicción, y así el Señor los hirió de muerte en Gabaón y los persiguió por el camino que lleva a Bet Jorón, y hasta Azeca y Maceda. 11 Mientras estos reyes huían de los israelitas, el Señor hizo que en la bajada de Bet Jorón, y hasta Azeca, cayeran granizos tan grandes como piedras, y muchos murieron. Fueron más los que murieron por causa del granizo que los que los hijos de Israel mataron a filo de espada.
12 El día en que los amorreos fueron vencidos, Josué le habló al Señor en presencia de los israelitas, y dijo:
«Sol, deténte en Gabaón;
Y tú, luna, en el valle de Ayalón.
13 Y el sol y la luna se detuvieron.
Y el pueblo se vengó de sus enemigos.»
¿Acaso esto no está escrito en el libro de Jaser?(A) El sol se detuvo en medio del cielo, y durante casi un día entero no se apresuró a ocultarse. 14 Nunca antes hubo un día como ése, ni lo habrá después, en que el Señor atendió a la voz de un hombre y peleó a favor de Israel, su pueblo.
15 Después de esto, Josué y el pueblo de Israel volvieron al campamento en Gilgal. 16 Los cinco reyes huyeron y se escondieron en una cueva en Maceda, 17 pero cuando le avisaron a Josué que habían hallado a los cinco reyes escondidos en esa cueva, 18 dijo:
«Tapen la entrada de la cueva con grandes piedras, y pongan guardias frente a ella. 19 Y ustedes, no se detengan; sigan a sus enemigos y atáquenlos por la retaguardia. No los dejen entrar a sus ciudades, porque el Señor nuestro Dios los ha entregado en sus manos.»
20 Josué y el pueblo de Israel hirieron a los amorreos hasta destruirlos, pero algunos de ellos lograron entrar en las ciudades fortificadas. 21 Después, todo el pueblo volvió sano y salvo al campamento en Maceda, donde estaba Josué, y no hubo nadie que hablara mal de los hijos de Israel. 22 Entonces Josué dijo:
«Abran la entrada de la cueva donde están los cinco reyes amorreos, y sáquenlos.»
23 Así lo hicieron, y sacaron a los reyes de Jerusalén, Hebrón, Jarmut, Laquis y Eglón, 24 y los llevaron ante Josué. Entonces él llamó a todos los hombres de Israel y a los jefes de los guerreros que lo habían acompañado, y les dijo:
«Pongan sus pies sobre el cuello de estos reyes.»
Ellos se acercaron y se pararon sobre su cuello, 25 y entonces Josué les dijo:
«No tengan miedo. No se atemoricen, sino sean fuertes y valientes, porque así hará el Señor con todos sus enemigos, contra quienes ustedes peleen.»
26 Después de eso, Josué los hirió de muerte e hizo que los colgaran en cinco árboles, en donde se quedaron colgados hasta que cayó la noche. 27 Cuando el sol estaba por ocultarse, mandó que los bajaran de los árboles y que los arrojaran dentro de la cueva donde se habían ocultado; luego se tapó la entrada de la cueva con grandes piedras, y éstas permanecen hasta el día de hoy.
28 Ese mismo día Josué tomó Maceda y mató a su rey y a sus habitantes a filo de espada. Los destruyó por completo, y arrasó con todo lo que tenía vida; hizo con el rey de Maceda lo mismo que había hecho con el rey de Jericó. 29 Luego Josué y el pueblo de Israel salieron de Maceda y fueron a pelear contra Libna, 30 y el Señor también la entregó en sus manos, junto con su rey, y mataron a filo de espada todo lo que tenía vida, como antes lo había hecho con el rey de Jericó. 31 Después salieron de Libna y se dirigieron a Laquis, y acamparon cerca de ella y también la combatieron. 32 Al día siguiente el Señor entregó a Laquis en manos de Israel, y la tomaron y mataron a filo de espada todo lo que tenía vida, como antes lo había hecho con el rey de Libna.
33 Horán, el rey de Guézer, fue en ayuda de Laquis, pero él y su pueblo fueron derrotados por Josué, y ni uno solo de ellos quedó con vida. 34 De Laquis, Josué y todo Israel pasaron a Eglón y acamparon cerca de allí, y también la combatieron. 35 Ese mismo día la tomaron, y mataron a filo de espada todo lo que tenía vida, como lo hicieron en Laquis. 36 Después salieron de Eglón para combatir a Hebrón, 37 y ese mismo día la tomaron, matando a filo de espada a su rey y a sus habitantes, y a todo lo que tenía vida, como antes lo habían hecho con Eglón. Nada quedó con vida.
38 Cuando Josué y el pueblo de Israel volvieron, se dirigieron a Debir para atacarla, 39 y la tomaron junto con su rey y sus ciudades, matando a filo de espada todo lo que tenía vida, como antes lo habían hecho con los reyes de Hebrón y Libna. 40 Además, Josué asoló toda la región montañosa del Néguev, los llanos y las laderas, y mató a todos sus reyes. Tal y como el Señor Dios de Israel lo había ordenado, no dejó nada con vida: 41 desde Cadés Barnea hasta Gaza, y por toda la tierra de Gosén hasta Gabaón, mató a los reyes de esos lugares 42 y tomó posesión de sus tierras porque el Señor y Dios de Israel peleaba en su favor. 43 Después, Josué y todo el pueblo de Israel volvieron a su campamento en Gilgal.

The Sun Stands Still
10 Now Adoni-Zedek(A) king of Jerusalem(B) heard that Joshua had taken Ai(C) and totally destroyed[a](D) it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon(E) had made a treaty of peace(F) with Israel and had become their allies. 2 He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters. 3 So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron,(G) Piram king of Jarmuth,(H) Japhia king of Lachish(I) and Debir(J) king of Eglon.(K) 4 “Come up and help me attack Gibeon,” he said, “because it has made peace(L) with Joshua and the Israelites.”
5 Then the five kings(M) of the Amorites(N)—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon—joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it.
6 The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal:(O) “Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.”
7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army,(P) including all the best fighting men. 8 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid(Q) of them; I have given them into your hand.(R) Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”(S)
9 After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. 10 The Lord threw them into confusion(T) before Israel,(U) so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon.(V) Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon(W) and cut them down all the way to Azekah(X) and Makkedah.(Y) 11 As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the Lord hurled large hailstones(Z) down on them,(AA) and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.
12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites(AB) over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:
“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.(AC)”
13 So the sun stood still,(AD)
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on[b] its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of Jashar.(AE)
The sun stopped(AF) in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting(AG) for Israel!
15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(AH)
Five Amorite Kings Killed
16 Now the five kings had fled(AI) and hidden in the cave at Makkedah. 17 When Joshua was told that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah, 18 he said, “Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave, and post some men there to guard it. 19 But don’t stop; pursue your enemies! Attack them from the rear and don’t let them reach their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.”
20 So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely,(AJ) but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities.(AK) 21 The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a word against the Israelites.
22 Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.” 23 So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. 24 When they had brought these kings(AL) to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, “Come here and put your feet(AM) on the necks of these kings.” So they came forward and placed their feet(AN) on their necks.
25 Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous.(AO) This is what the Lord will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.” 26 Then Joshua put the kings to death and exposed their bodies on five poles, and they were left hanging on the poles until evening.
27 At sunset(AP) Joshua gave the order and they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where they had been hiding. At the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks, which are there to this day.(AQ)
Southern Cities Conquered
28 That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors.(AR) And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.(AS)
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah(AT) and attacked it. 30 The Lord also gave that city and its king into Israel’s hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish;(AU) he took up positions against it and attacked it. 32 The Lord gave Lachish into Israel’s hands, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. 33 Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer(AV) had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left.
34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon;(AW) they took up positions against it and attacked it. 35 They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish.
36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron(AX) and attacked it. 37 They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone(AY) in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it.
38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir.(AZ) 39 They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron.(BA)
40 So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev,(BB) the western foothills and the mountain slopes,(BC) together with all their kings.(BD) He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.(BE) 41 Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea(BF) to Gaza(BG) and from the whole region of Goshen(BH) to Gibeon. 42 All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought(BI) for Israel.
43 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(BJ)

7 So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he and (K)all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. 8 And the Lord said to Joshua, (L)“Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hand; (M)not a man of them shall (N)stand before you.” 9 Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly, having marched all night from Gilgal. 10 So the Lord (O)routed them before Israel, killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, chased them along the road that goes (P)to Beth Horon, and struck them down as far as (Q)Azekah and Makkedah. 11 And it happened, as they fled before Israel and were on the descent of Beth Horon, (R)that the Lord cast down large hailstones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than the children of Israel killed with the sword.
12 Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel:
(S)“Sun, stand still over Gibeon;
And Moon, in the Valley of (T)Aijalon.”
13 So the sun stood still,
And the moon stopped,
Till the people had revenge
Upon their enemies.
(U)Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. 14 And there has been (V)no day like that, before it or after it, that the Lord heeded the voice of a man; for (W)the Lord fought for Israel.
15 (X)Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

(Y)No one [a]moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings to me from the cave.” 23 And they did so, and brought out those five kings to him from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
24 So it was, when they brought out those kings to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the captains of the men of war who went with him, “Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings.” And they drew near and (Z)put their feet on their necks. 25 Then Joshua said to [b]them, (AA)“Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage, for (AB)thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.” 26 And afterward Joshua struck [c]them and killed them, and hanged them on five trees; and they (AC)were hanging on the trees until evening. 27 So it was at the time of the going down of the sun that Joshua commanded, and they (AD)took them down from the trees, cast them into the cave where they had been hidden, and laid large stones against the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.
Conquest of the Southland
28 On that day Joshua took Makkedah, and struck it and its king with the edge of the sword. He utterly (AE)destroyed [d]them—all the people who were in it. He let none remain. He also did to the king of Makkedah (AF)as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29 Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to (AG)Libnah; and they fought against Libnah. 30 And the Lord also delivered it and its king into the hand of Israel; he struck it and all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword. He let none remain in it, but did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish; and they encamped against it and fought against it. 32 And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, who took it on the second day, and struck it and all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword, according to all that he had done to Libnah. 33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, until he left him none remaining.
34 From Lachish Joshua passed to Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it and fought against it. 35 They took it on that day and struck it with the edge of the sword; all the people who were in it he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
36 So Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, to (AH)Hebron; and they fought against it. 37 And they took it and struck it with the edge of the sword—its king, all its cities, and all the people who were in it; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon, but utterly destroyed it and all the people who were in it.
38 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to (AI)Debir; and they fought against it. 39 And he took it and its king and all its cities; they struck them with the edge of the sword and utterly destroyed all the people who were in it. He left none remaining; as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and its king, as he had done also to Libnah and its king.
40 So Joshua conquered all the land: the (AJ)mountain country and the [e]South and the lowland and the wilderness slopes, and (AK)all their kings; he left none remaining, but (AL)utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded. 41 And Joshua conquered them from (AM)Kadesh Barnea as far as (AN)Gaza, (AO)and all the country of Goshen, even as far as Gibeon. 42 All these kings and their land Joshua took at one time, (AP)because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. 43 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
