10 When Adoni-Tzedek king of Yerushalayim heard how Y’hoshua had taken ‘Ai and utterly destroyed it — he had done the same to ‘Ai and its king as he had done to Yericho and its king — and how the inhabitants of Giv‘on had made peace with Isra’el and were living among them, 2 his people became greatly alarmed; because Giv‘on was as large as one of the royal cities, larger than ‘Ai, and all its men were courageous. 3 So Adoni-Tzedek king of Yerushalayim sent this message to Hoham king of Hevron, Pir’am king of Yarmut, Yafia king of Lakhish and D’vir king of ‘Eglon: 4 “Come up and help me, and we’ll attack Giv‘on, because it has made peace with Y’hoshua and the people of Isra’el.” 5 So the five kings of the Emori — the kings of Yerushalayim, Hevron, Yarmut, Lakhish and ‘Eglon — got together, went up with all their armies, pitched camp against Giv‘on and made war against it.
6 The people of Giv‘on sent a message to Y’hoshua at their camp in Gilgal that said, “Don’t ignore your servants! Come up to us quickly, and save us! Help us, because all the kings of the Emori living in the hills have gotten together to fight us.” 7 Y’hoshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the fighting men with him, including all the bravest ones. 8 Adonai said to Y’hoshua, “Don’t be afraid of them, for I have handed them over to you; not one of their men will stand against you.”
9 Having spent the entire night marching up from Gilgal, Y’hoshua fell upon them, taking them by surprise. 10 Adonai threw them into confusion before Isra’el and defeated them in a great slaughter at Giv‘on, pursuing them along the road that goes up from Beit-Horon, and beating them back to ‘Azekah and all the way to Makkedah. 11 As they fled before Isra’el down the road to Beit-Horon, Adonai threw huge hailstones down on them all the way to ‘Azekah, and they died; more died because of the hail than because Isra’el had killed them with the sword.
12 Then, on the day Adonai handed over the Emori to the people of Isra’el, Y’hoshua spoke to Adona i; in the sight of Isra’el he said,
“Sun, stand motionless over Giv‘on!
Moon, you too, over Ayalon Valley!”
13 So the sun stood still and the moon stayed put,
till Isra’el took vengeance on their enemies.
This is written in the book of Yashar. The sun stood still in the sky and was in no rush to set for nearly a whole day. 14 There has never been a day like that before or since, when Adonai listened to the voice of a man; it happened because Adonai was fighting on Isra’el’s behalf.
15 Y’hoshua returned with all Isra’el to the camp at Gilgal. 16 But those five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah, 17 and it was reported to Y’hoshua that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah. 18 Y’hoshua said, “Roll big stones to the mouth of the cave, and put men there to guard them. 19 However, you, don’t wait, but keep chasing your enemies, and attack those farthest in the rear. Don’t allow them to return to their cities, because Adonai has handed them over to you.” 20 After Y’hoshua and the people of Isra’el had finished killing them off in a very great slaughter, till they had been destroyed, and the remaining remnant had entered the fortified cities, 21 all the people returned safely to Y’hoshua at the camp in Makkedah; and no one said a word against any of the people of Isra’el.
22 Then Y’hoshua said, “Open up the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out of the cave to me. 23 They did it; they brought the five kings out to him — the kings of Yerushalayim, Hevron, Yarmut, Lakhish and ‘Eglon. 24 After they had brought the five kings to Y’hoshua, he summoned all the men of Isra’el and said to the commanders of the soldiers who had gone with him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” They came and put their feet on their necks. 25 Y’hoshua said to them, “Don’t be afraid or confused, but be strong and bold, because this is what Adonai will do to all your enemies that you fight against.” 26 With that, Y’hoshua struck them and put them to death, hanging them on five trees, where they remained hanging until evening. 27 At sunset Y’hoshua gave an order, and they lowered them from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, then laid big stones at the mouth of the cave; and there they remain to this day.
28 Y’hoshua captured Makkedah that day, defeating it and its king by the sword. He completely destroyed them, everyone there — he left no one; and he did to the king of Makkedah what he had done to the king of Yericho.
29 Y’hoshua went on from Makkedah, and all Isra’el with him, to Livnah; and he fought against Livnah. 30 Adonai also handed it and its king over to Isra’el. He defeated it with the sword, everyone there — he left no one, and he did to its king what he had done to the king of Yericho.
31 Y’hoshua went on from Livnah, and all Isra’el with him, to Lakhish; and he pitched camp against it and fought against it. 32 Adonai handed it over to Isra’el; he captured it the second day. He defeated it with the sword, everyone there, exactly as he had done to Livnah. 33 But then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lakhish; so Y’hoshua attacked him and his people, until he had no one left with him.
34 Y’hoshua went on from Lakhish, and all Isra’el with him, to ‘Eglon; and he pitched camp against it and fought against it. 35 They captured it that very day. He defeated it with the sword, completely destroying everyone there, exactly as he had done to Lakhish.
36 Y’hoshua went up from ‘Eglon, and all Isra’el with him, to Hevron; and they fought against it. 37 They captured it, defeating it with the sword, including its king, its villages and everyone there; he left no one, exactly as he had done to ‘Eglon; but he completely destroyed it and everyone there.
38 Y’hoshua turned back, and all Isra’el with him, to D’vir and fought against it. 39 They captured it, its king and all its villages, defeating them with the sword and utterly destroying everyone there; he left no one. He did to D’vir and it king as he had done to Hevron and as he had done to Livnah and its king.
40 So Y’hoshua attacked all the land — the hills, the Negev, the Sh’felah and the mountain slopes — and all their kings; he left none but completely destroyed everything that breathed, as Adonai the God of Isra’el had ordered. 41 Y’hoshua attacked them from Kadesh-Barnea to ‘Azah and all the land of Goshen, as far as Giv‘on. 42 Y’hoshua captured all these kings and their land all at the same time, because Adonai the God of Isra’el fought on Isra’el’s behalf. 43 Then Y’hoshua returned, and all Isra’el with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

10 When Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai and devoted it to destruction, and that Joshua had done to Ai and its king exactly what he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were allied with them, 2 then he and those with him were very afraid because Gibeon was a large city, like one of the royal capital cities. It was larger than Ai, and all its men were warriors. 3 So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon. He said, 4 “Come up, join me, and help me. We must attack Gibeon, because it made peace with Joshua and with the Israelites.”
5 So the five kings of the Amorites—namely, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon—gathered together and went up with all their divisions.[a] They set up camp around Gibeon and waged war against it.
6 The men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, saying, “Do not withdraw your hand from your servants. Come up to us quickly! Save us! Help us, because all the kings of the Amorites living in the hill country have united themselves against us.”
7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal—he and all the military forces with him, including all the strong warriors.
8 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, because I have given them into your hand. Not a man among them will be able to stand in your presence.”
9 So Joshua came upon them unexpectedly by marching up from Gilgal all night. 10 The Lord threw them into a panic before Israel, and he struck a powerful blow against them at Gibeon. Then he chased them on the road that goes up to Beth Horon, and he struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. 11 While they were fleeing from Israel on the descent from Beth Horon, the Lord hurled large stones from the heavens on them all the way to Azekah. So they died. Those who died from the hailstones were many more than those whom the Israelites killed by the sword.
12 Then Joshua spoke to the Lord on the day that the Lord gave the Amorites into the power of Israel ⎣when he struck them down at Gibeon, and they were struck down before the people of Israel⎦.[b] He said in the sight of Israel:
Sun, rest at Gibeon.
Moon, rest at the Valley of Aijalon.
13 The sun rested,
and the moon stood still
until a nation could avenge itself on its enemies.
Is this not written in the Book of Jashar?[c] The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and did not hurry to set for about a whole day. 14 There has never been a day like that day either before it or after it, a day when the Lord listened to the voice of a man, for the Lord was fighting for Israel.
15 Then Joshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp at Gilgal.
16 Those five kings fled and hid in the cave at Makkedah. 17 It was reported to Joshua: “The five kings have been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah.”
18 So Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and station men over it to guard them. 19 But you—do not stand still. Chase your enemies and attack them from the rear.[d] Do not give them a chance to get to their cities, because the Lord your God has given them into your hand.”
20 When Joshua and the people of Israel had inflicted a devastating blow upon them, to the point that they were almost wiped out (though a small group of survivors escaped into the fortified cities), 21 then all the people returned safely to the camp of Joshua at Makkedah. No one dared to speak a word against[e] the people of Israel—against any one of them!
22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out to me from the cave.” 23 They did so and brought those five kings out to him from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 24 When they had brought those kings out to Joshua, he summoned every man of Israel and said to the commanders of the fighting men who had gone with him, “Come, put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So they came and put their feet on their necks.
25 Then Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid. Do not be overwhelmed. Be strong and courageous because the Lord will do these same things to all your enemies against whom you are waging war.” 26 Joshua struck them down after that, and after he had killed them, he hung them on five trees. They were hung on the trees until evening.
27 At sunset Joshua gave the command, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves. They placed large stones over the mouth of the cave, which remain there to this very day.
28 Joshua captured Makkedah on that day and struck it and its king with the edge of the sword. He devoted it to destruction, together with every living thing that was in it. He did not leave a survivor. So he did to the king of Makkedah just as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah and waged war against Libnah. 30 The Lord gave it into the hand of Israel, together with its king. He struck Libnah with the edge of the sword, together with every living thing that was in it. He did not leave a survivor in it. So he did to its king just as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Next Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish. He set up camp against it and waged war against it. 32 The Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel. He captured it on the second day, and he struck it with the edge of the sword, together with every living thing that was in it, exactly as he had done to Libnah.
33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish, but Joshua struck him and his people until he did not leave one survivor for him.
34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved from Lachish to Eglon. They set up camp against it and waged war against it. 35 They captured it on that day and struck it with the edge of the sword, together with every living thing that was in it. On that day he devoted it to destruction, exactly as he had done to Lachish.
36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron, and they waged war against it. 37 They captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword together with its king and all its settlements and every living thing that was in it. He did not leave a survivor, exactly as he had done to Eglon. He devoted it to destruction, along with every living thing in it.
38 Next Joshua and all Israel with him turned back to Debir and waged war against it. 39 He captured it, together with its king and all its settlements. They struck them with the edge of the sword and devoted to destruction every living thing that was in it. He did not leave a survivor. Just as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and its king, just as he had done to Libnah and its king.
40 In this way Joshua struck the whole land: the hill country,[f] the Negev,[g] the Shephelah,[h] and the slopes,[i] together with all their kings. He did not leave a survivor. Every breathing thing he devoted to destruction, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded him. 41 Joshua struck them from Kadesh Barnea all the way to Gaza and from the whole land of Goshen[j] all the way to Gibeon. 42 All of these kings and their land Joshua captured at one time because the Lord, the God of Israel, was fighting for Israel. 43 Then Joshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp at Gilgal.

10 Da kong Adonitzedek af Jerusalem hørte, hvordan Josva havde erobret og fuldstændig ødelagt Aj og Jeriko og dræbt de to byers konger, og at gibeonitterne havde sluttet fred med Israels folk, så de nu var deres allierede, 2 blev han skrækslagen. Gibeon var nemlig en stor by, lige så stor som de andre kongers byer og større end Aj, og dens mænd var kendt som stærke krigere. 3 Derfor sendte kong Adonitzedek bud til en række af sine nabokonger: kong Hoham af Hebron, kong Piram af Jarmut, kong Jafia af Lakish og kong Debir af Eglon.

9 Samme nat marcherede Josva og hæren fra Gilgal til Gibeon, hvor de overrumplede amoritterne. 10 Herren gjorde dem så panikslagne, at de led et stort nederlag. De, der tog flugten, blev indhentet og dræbt neden for bjergpasset ved Bet-Horon og længere sydpå helt til Azeka og Makkeda. 11 Da de flygtende amoritter kom til skråningen ved Bet-Horon lod Herren store hagl falde ned over dem fra himlen hele vejen til Azeka, så mange af dem døde. Haglene dræbte flere, end israelitterne gjorde med deres sværd. 12 Den dag, da Herren gav israelitterne sejr over amoritterne, bad Josva højt til Herren: „Lad solen stå stille over Gibeon, og lad månen standse i sin bane over Ajjalons dal.” 13 Og solen og månen stod stille, indtil israelitterne havde tilintetgjort deres fjender. Er det ikke sådan, der står i „Den Retskafnes Bog”?
Den dag stod solen stille midt på himlen og ventede næsten en hel dag med at gå ned. 14 Aldrig før eller siden har der været en dag, hvor Herren adlød sådan en bøn fra et menneske. Det var, fordi Herren kæmpede på Israels side, 15 at Josva og hele hæren senere kunne vende uskadt tilbage til lejren i Gilgal.
16 På et tidspunkt under slaget ved Gibeon undslap de fem konger og gemte sig i en hule ved byen Makkeda. 17 Så snart Josva fik det at vide, 18 gav han følgende befaling: „Rul store sten for indgangen og sæt vagtposter udenfor. 19 Resten af hæren skal følge efter fjenderne og hugge dem ned bagfra. De må ikke nå at slippe ind i deres byer. Hug dem ned, for Herren, jeres Gud, har overgivet dem til jer.”
20 Så genoptog Josva og den israelitiske hær forfølgelsen og huggede de fem kongers hære ned med undtagelse af nogle enkelte krigere, der nåede i sikkerhed i de befæstede byer. 21 Israelitterne vendte derefter uskadte tilbage til lejren ved Makkeda. Fra da af var der ingen, som vovede at gøre oprør imod dem.
22 Da kampen var overstået, sagde Josva til sine mænd: „Fjern stenene fra hulens indgang og før de fem konger ud til mig.” 23 Så førte mændene de fem konger ud til Josva, 24 og han sagde til sine hærførere: „Sæt jeres fødder på kongernes nakke.” Det gjorde de.
25 „Lad aldrig frygt og mismod overmande jer,” sagde Josva. „Vær altid stærke og modige, for sådan her vil Herren gøre med alle jeres fjender.” 26 Så blev kongerne henrettet og hængt op på hver sin pæl indtil aften.
27 Ved solnedgang gav Josva ordre til, at deres lig skulle tages ned og kastes ind i hulen, hvor de havde gemt sig. Hulens indgang blev stoppet til med store sten, som ligger der den dag i dag.
De øvrige byer i sydlandet indtages og ødelægges
28 Samme dag indtog Josva Makkeda. Han ødelagde byen og huggede både kongen og indbyggerne ned. Ikke en eneste i byen blev skånet. Det gik Makkeda, som det var gået Jeriko.
29 Senere drog Josva og israelitterne videre fra Makkeda til Libna og angreb den. 30 Herren overgav byen og dens konge til israelitterne. Alle blev hugget ned uden skånsel, og kongen af Libna fik samme behandling som kongen af Jeriko.
31 Så tog Josva og israelitterne videre fra Libna til Lakish og gik til angreb på den. 32 Efter kun en dag overgav Herren byen til dem, så de kunne gå ind og hugge befolkningen ned ligesom i Libna.
33 Under angrebet på Lakish dukkede kong Horam af Gezer op med sin hær for at komme byen til undsætning, men Josva og hans mænd slog kongen ihjel og udslettede fuldstændigt hans hær.
34-35 Derefter forlod israelitterne Lakish og gik imod Eglon. De løb byen over ende allerede den første dag. Også her blev samtlige indbyggere hugget ned. 36 Fra Eglon tog de videre til Hebron, 37 angreb og indtog byen. Alle indbyggerne i byen og i de omliggende landsbyer fik samme medfart som deres konge. De blev alle hugget ned. 38 Så vendte de sig mod Debir. 39 Byen og dens omliggende landsbyer blev hurtigt indtaget, og alle indbyggerne hugget ned som i Libna og Hebron.
40 Således indtog Josva og hans hær hele området og dræbte de folk og konger, der boede på bakkeskråningerne mod vest, i højlandet, i Negev mod syd og på skråningerne mod øst. De udryddede hele landets befolkning, sådan som Herren, Israels Gud, havde befalet. 41 De huggede dem ned fra Kadesh-Barnea til Gaza, og fra Goshen til Gibeon. 42 Alle disse konger og deres landområder blev erobret i et enkelt felttog, for Herren, Israels Gud, kæmpede for sit folk. 43 Derefter vendte Josva og hæren tilbage til lejren ved Gilgal.
