The Sun Stands Still
10 Now Adoni-Zedek(A) king of Jerusalem(B) heard that Joshua had taken Ai(C) and totally destroyed[a](D) it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon(E) had made a treaty of peace(F) with Israel and had become their allies. 2 He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters. 3 So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron,(G) Piram king of Jarmuth,(H) Japhia king of Lachish(I) and Debir(J) king of Eglon.(K) 4 “Come up and help me attack Gibeon,” he said, “because it has made peace(L) with Joshua and the Israelites.”
5 Then the five kings(M) of the Amorites(N)—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon—joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it.
6 The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal:(O) “Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.”
7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army,(P) including all the best fighting men. 8 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid(Q) of them; I have given them into your hand.(R) Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”(S)
9 After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. 10 The Lord threw them into confusion(T) before Israel,(U) so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon.(V) Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon(W) and cut them down all the way to Azekah(X) and Makkedah.(Y) 11 As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the Lord hurled large hailstones(Z) down on them,(AA) and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.
12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites(AB) over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:
“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.(AC)”
13 So the sun stood still,(AD)
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on[b] its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of Jashar.(AE)
The sun stopped(AF) in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting(AG) for Israel!
15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(AH)
Five Amorite Kings Killed
16 Now the five kings had fled(AI) and hidden in the cave at Makkedah. 17 When Joshua was told that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah, 18 he said, “Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave, and post some men there to guard it. 19 But don’t stop; pursue your enemies! Attack them from the rear and don’t let them reach their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.”
20 So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely,(AJ) but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities.(AK) 21 The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a word against the Israelites.
22 Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.” 23 So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. 24 When they had brought these kings(AL) to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, “Come here and put your feet(AM) on the necks of these kings.” So they came forward and placed their feet(AN) on their necks.
25 Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous.(AO) This is what the Lord will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.” 26 Then Joshua put the kings to death and exposed their bodies on five poles, and they were left hanging on the poles until evening.
27 At sunset(AP) Joshua gave the order and they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where they had been hiding. At the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks, which are there to this day.(AQ)
Southern Cities Conquered
28 That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors.(AR) And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.(AS)
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah(AT) and attacked it. 30 The Lord also gave that city and its king into Israel’s hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish;(AU) he took up positions against it and attacked it. 32 The Lord gave Lachish into Israel’s hands, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. 33 Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer(AV) had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left.
34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon;(AW) they took up positions against it and attacked it. 35 They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish.
36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron(AX) and attacked it. 37 They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone(AY) in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it.
38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir.(AZ) 39 They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron.(BA)
40 So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev,(BB) the western foothills and the mountain slopes,(BC) together with all their kings.(BD) He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.(BE) 41 Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea(BF) to Gaza(BG) and from the whole region of Goshen(BH) to Gibeon. 42 All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought(BI) for Israel.
43 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(BJ)

2 That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.
3 Wherefore Adonizedec king of Jerusalem, sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,
4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.
5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.
6 And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.
7 So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.
8 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.
9 Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night.
10 And the Lord discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.
11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.
12 Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.
13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the Lord fought for Israel.
15 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
16 But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.
17 And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.
18 And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:
19 And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the Lord your God hath delivered them into your hand.
20 And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities.
21 And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
22 Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.
23 And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
24 And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.
26 And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.
27 And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave's mouth, which remain until this very day.
28 And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.
29 Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:
30 And the Lord delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.
31 And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:
32 And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.
33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.
34 And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:
35 And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
36 And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:
37 And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.
38 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:
39 And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.
40 So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel commanded.
41 And Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.
42 And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.
43 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

10 (A)Quando Adoni-Sedec, re di Gerusalemme, udì che Giosuè aveva preso Ai e l’aveva votata allo sterminio, che aveva trattato Ai e il suo re nel modo in cui aveva trattato Gerico e il suo re, che gli abitanti di Gabaon avevano fatto la pace con gli Israeliti ed erano in mezzo a loro, 2 fu tutto spaventato. Infatti Gabaon era una città grande come una delle città regali, anche più grande di Ai, e tutti gli uomini suoi erano valorosi. 3 Perciò Adoni-Sedec, re di Gerusalemme, mandò a dire a Oam, re di Ebron, a Piram, re di Iarmut, a Iafia, re di Lachis e a Debir, re di Eglon: 4 «Salite da me, soccorretemi e noi batteremo Gabaon, perché ha fatto la pace con Giosuè e con i figli d’Israele». 5 Cinque re degli Amorei, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon si radunarono, salirono con tutti i loro eserciti, si accamparono di fronte a Gabaon e l’attaccarono.
6 Allora i Gabaoniti mandarono a dire a Giosuè, all’accampamento di Ghilgal: «Non negare ai tuoi servi il tuo aiuto; affrèttati a salire da noi, liberaci, soccorrici, perché tutti i re degli Amorei che abitano la regione montuosa si sono radunati contro di noi».
7 Giosuè dunque salì da Ghilgal, con tutta la gente di guerra e con tutti gli uomini segnalati per valore. 8 E il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Non li temere, perché io li ho dati in tuo potere; nessuno di loro potrà resistere di fronte a te». 9 Così Giosuè piombò loro addosso all’improvviso: aveva marciato tutta la notte da Ghilgal. 10 E il Signore li mise in rotta davanti a Israele, che inflisse loro una grande sconfitta presso Gabaon, li inseguì per la via che sale a Bet-Oron, e li batté fino ad Azeca e a Maccheda. 11 Mentre fuggivano davanti a Israele ed erano alla discesa di Bet-Oron, il Signore fece cadere dal cielo su di loro delle grosse pietre fino ad Azeca, ed essi perirono: quelli che morirono per le pietre della grandinata furono più numerosi di quelli che i figli d’Israele uccisero con la spada.
12 (B)Allora Giosuè parlò al Signore, il giorno che il Signore diede gli Amorei in mano ai figli d’Israele, e disse in presenza d’Israele: «Sole, fermati su Gabaon, e tu, luna, sulla valle di Aialon!»
13 E il sole si fermò, e la luna rimase al suo posto, finché la nazione si fu vendicata dei suoi nemici. Questo non sta forse scritto nel libro del Giusto? E il sole si fermò in mezzo al cielo e non si affrettò a tramontare per quasi un giorno intero.
14 E mai, né prima né poi, c’è stato un giorno simile a quello, nel quale il Signore abbia esaudito la voce di un uomo; perché il Signore combatteva per Israele. 15 Poi Giosuè, con tutto Israele, tornò all’accampamento di Ghilgal.
16 (C)Or i cinque re erano fuggiti, e si erano nascosti nella caverna di Maccheda. 17 La cosa fu riferita a Giosuè e gli fu detto: «I cinque re sono stati trovati nascosti nella caverna di Maccheda». 18 Allora Giosuè disse: «Rotolate delle grosse pietre all’imboccatura della caverna, e mettetevi degli uomini per far loro la guardia; 19 ma voi non vi fermate; inseguite i vostri nemici e colpite le retroguardie; non li lasciate entrare nelle loro città, perché il Signore, il vostro Dio, li ha dati in vostro potere».
20 Quando Giosuè e i figli d’Israele ebbero finito d’infliggere loro una completa disfatta, e quelli che scamparono si furono rifugiati nelle città fortificate, 21 tutto il popolo tornò tranquillamente a Giosuè, all’accampamento di Maccheda, senza che nessuno osasse fiatare contro i figli d’Israele.
22 Allora Giosuè disse: «Aprite l’imboccatura della caverna e conducetemi fuori quei cinque re». 23 Quelli agirono così: fecero uscire dalla caverna quei cinque re, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis, il re di Eglon, e glieli condussero. 24 E quando quei re furono tolti dalla caverna e condotti da Giosuè, Giosuè chiamò tutti gli uomini d’Israele e disse ai capi dei guerrieri che erano andati con lui: «Avvicinatevi, mettete il piede sul collo di questi re». Quelli si avvicinarono e misero il piede sul loro collo. 25 Giosuè disse loro: «Non temete, non vi sgomentate, siate forti e coraggiosi, perché così farà il Signore a tutti i vostri nemici contro i quali dovrete combattere». 26 Dopo ciò Giosuè li colpì e li uccise; quindi li appese a cinque alberi; e quelli rimasero appesi agli alberi fino alla sera. 27 Al tramonto, Giosuè ordinò che fossero calati dagli alberi e gettati nella caverna dove si erano nascosti, e che all’imboccatura della caverna fossero messe delle grosse pietre. Esse sono rimaste lì fino a oggi.
28 In quel medesimo giorno Giosuè prese Maccheda e fece passare a fil di spada la città e il suo re; li votò allo sterminio con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non ne lasciò scampare una, e trattò il re di Maccheda come aveva trattato il re di Gerico.
Conquiste nel mezzogiorno
29 (D)Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Maccheda a Libna, e l’attaccò. 30 Il Signore diede anche quella città con il suo re nelle mani d’Israele, e Giosuè la mise a fil di spada con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non ne lasciò scampare una, e trattò il suo re come aveva trattato il re di Gerico.
31 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Libna a Lachis; si accampò di fronte a questa e l’attaccò. 32 Il Signore diede Lachis nelle mani d’Israele, che la prese il secondo giorno, e la mise a fil di spada, con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, esattamente come aveva fatto a Libna. Allora Oram, re di Ghezer, salì in soccorso di Lachis. 33 Ma Giosuè batté lui e il suo popolo senza lasciarne scampare alcuno.
34 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Lachis a Eglon; si accamparono di fronte a questa e l’attaccarono. 35 La presero quel medesimo giorno e la misero a fil di spada. In quel giorno Giosuè votò allo sterminio tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, esattamente come aveva fatto a Lachis.
36 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele salì da Eglon a Ebron e l’attaccarono. 37 La presero, la misero a fil di spada insieme con il suo re, con tutte le sue città e con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non ne lasciò sfuggire una, esattamente come aveva fatto a Eglon; la votò allo sterminio con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano.
38 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele tornò verso Debir e l’attaccò. 39 La prese con il suo re e con tutte le sue città; la misero a fil di spada e votarono allo sterminio tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, senza che ne scampasse una. Egli trattò Debir e il suo re come aveva trattato Ebron, come aveva trattato Libna e il suo re.
40 Giosuè dunque batté tutto il paese, la contrada montuosa, la regione meridionale, la regione bassa, le pendici e tutti i loro re; non lasciò scampare nessuno, ma votò allo sterminio tutto ciò che aveva vita, come il Signore, il Dio d’Israele, aveva comandato. 41 Così Giosuè li batté da Cades-Barnea fino a Gaza, e batté tutto il paese di Goscen fino a Gabaon. 42 Giosuè prese in una volta sola tutti quei re e i loro paesi, perché il Signore, il Dio d’Israele, combatteva per Israele. 43 Poi Giosuè, con tutto Israele, tornò all’accampamento di Ghilgal.
