Joshua Addresses the Israelites
1 After the death of Moses the servant of Yahweh, Yahweh said to Joshua son of Nun, the assistant[a] of Moses, saying, 2 “My servant Moses is dead. Get up and cross the Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the Israelites.[b] 3 Every place that the soles of your feet will tread, I have given it to you, as I promised[c] to Moses. 4 From the wilderness and the Lebanon,[d] up to the great river, the river Euphrates, all of the land of the Hittites, and up to the great sea in the west,[e] will be your territory. 5 No one will stand before you[f] all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will not fail you, and I will not forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous, for you will give the people this land as an inheritance that I swore to their ancestors[g] to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous to observe diligently the whole law[h] that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn aside from it, to the right or left, so that you may succeed wherever you go.[i] 8 The scroll of this law will not depart from your mouth; you will meditate on it day and night so that you may observe diligently all that is written[j] in it. For then you will succeed in your ways and prosper. 9 Did I not command you? Be strong and courageous! Do not fear or be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”[k] 10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, 11 “Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people: ‘Prepare your provisions;[l] in[m] three days you are to cross the Jordan to go possess the land that Yahweh your God is giving you to possess.’”
12 To the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh Joshua said, 13 “Remember the word that Moses Yahweh’s servant commanded you, saying, ‘Yahweh your God is giving rest to you, and he is giving[n] you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your little children, and your livestock, they will remain in the land that Moses gave to you beyond the Jordan. All of the best fighting men[o] will cross armed in front of your families; they will help you 15 until Yahweh gives rest to your families as well as to you. They will take possession of the land that Yahweh your God is giving to them. Then you will return to your own land and take possession of it, the land that Moses the servant of Yahweh gave you beyond the Jordan to the east.”[p] 16 And they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you will send us we will go. 17 Just as we obeyed Moses, so will we obey you. Only may Yahweh your God be with you, as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your orders[q] and does not obey your words according to what you commanded us will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.”

1 Na de dood van zijn dienaar Mozes sprak de Here tot Jozua, de zoon van Nun, die de rechterhand van Mozes was geweest. Hij zei tegen hem: 2 ‘Nu mijn dienaar Mozes is gestorven, bent u de nieuwe leider van Israël. Leid mijn volk over de Jordaan het beloofde land binnen. 3 Wat Ik tegen Mozes heb gezegd, zeg Ik ook tegen u: “Elk stuk grond dat u betreedt, zal deel gaan uitmaken van het land Israël. 4 Dit gebied zal zich uitstrekken van de Negev-woestijn in het zuiden tot het gebergte van de Libanon in het noorden en van de Middellandse Zee in het westen tot aan de rivier de Eufraat in het oosten. Ook het land van de Hethieten valt daaronder.” 5 Niemand zal u kunnen tegenhouden zolang u leeft, want Ik zal u helpen, zoals Ik Mozes heb geholpen. Ik laat u nooit in de steek, Ik zal altijd bij u blijven. 6 Wees sterk en moedig, want u zult de leider van mijn volk zijn en u zult het helpen al het land te veroveren dat Ik aan zijn voorouders beloofde. 7 U hoeft alleen sterk en moedig te zijn en heel de wet die Mozes u gaf, letterlijk te gehoorzamen. Als u dat doet, zal alles wat u onderneemt, gelukken. 8 Houd het volk deze wetten steeds voor en denk er zelf dag en nacht over na, zodat u zeker weet dat u ze volledig naleeft. Want alleen dan zult u slagen. 9 Ja, wees moedig en sterk! Ban angst en twijfel uit uw hart. Onthoud dat de Here, uw God, u overal zal helpen.’
10,11 Toen gaf Jozua de leiders van Israël opdracht het volk te zeggen dat het zich moest klaarmaken voor de overtocht over de Jordaan. ‘Binnen drie dagen zullen wij oversteken en het land dat God ons heeft gegeven, veroveren en er gaan wonen!’ vertelde hij hun. 12,13 Toen riep hij de leiders van de stammen Ruben, Gad en Manasse bij zich en herinnerde hen aan de opdracht die Mozes had gegeven: ‘De Here, uw God, geeft u rust in uw eigen land aan deze zijde van de Jordaan. 14 Daarom mogen uw vrouwen, kinderen en het vee hier blijven, maar uw troepen moeten volledig bewapend de andere stammen over de Jordaan leiden en hen helpen het land aan de overzijde van de rivier te veroveren, 15 blijf bij hen tot de verovering is voltooid en uw broeders zich ook in alle rust kunnen vestigen. Pas dan mag u zich hier aan de oostzijde van de Jordaan vestigen.’ 16 Zij stemden daarmee in en beloofden Jozua als hun legeraanvoerder te gehoorzamen. 17,18 ‘Net zoals wij Mozes hebben gehoorzaamd, zullen wij u gehoorzamen,’ verzekerden zij hem, ‘en moge de Here, uw God, u net zo helpen als Hij Mozes deed. Als ook maar iemand tegen uw bevelen in opstand komt, zal hij sterven. Ga ons voor en wees sterk en moedig!’

1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord it came to pass, that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister, saying,
2 Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.
3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.
4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.
7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest.
8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,
11 Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the Lord your God giveth you to possess it.
12 And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, spake Joshua, saying,
13 Remember the word which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, The Lord your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land.
14 Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them;
15 Until the Lord have given your brethren rest, as he hath given you, and they also have possessed the land which the Lord your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses the Lord's servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the sunrising.
16 And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go.
17 According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the Lord thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.
18 Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.
