Dios llama a Josué
1 Después que murió Moisés, el siervo del Señor, habló el Señor con Josué, hijo de Nun y ayudante de Moisés, y le dijo:
2 «Como mi siervo Moisés ha muerto, ahora eres tú quien debe cruzar el río Jordán con todo el pueblo de Israel, para ir a la tierra que voy a darles a ustedes. 3 Tal como se lo prometí a Moisés, yo les daré toda la tierra en donde ustedes pongan el pie. 4 Les daré el territorio que va desde el desierto y la sierra del Líbano hasta el gran río Éufrates, con todo el territorio de los hititas, y hasta el mar Mediterráneo. 5 Nadie te podrá derrotar en toda tu vida, y yo estaré contigo así como estuve con Moisés, sin dejarte ni abandonarte jamás. 6 Ten valor y firmeza, que tú vas a repartir la tierra a este pueblo, pues es la herencia que yo prometí a sus antepasados. 7 Lo único que te pido es que tengas mucho valor y firmeza, y que cumplas toda la ley que mi siervo Moisés te dio. Cúmplela al pie de la letra para que te vaya bien en todo lo que hagas. 8 Repite siempre lo que dice el libro de la ley de Dios, y medita en él de día y de noche, para que hagas siempre lo que éste ordena. Así todo lo que hagas te saldrá bien. 9 Yo soy quien te manda que tengas valor y firmeza. No tengas miedo ni te desanimes porque yo, tu Señor y Dios, estaré contigo dondequiera que vayas.»
Josué se prepara para la conquista
10 Entonces Josué les dio órdenes a los jefes del pueblo: 11 «Vayan por todo el campamento y ordenen a todos que preparen provisiones, porque dentro de tres días vamos a cruzar el río Jordán para tomar posesión de la tierra que el Señor nuestro Dios nos va a dar.»
12 Josué habló también a las tribus de Rubén y de Gad y a la media tribu de Manasés, y les dijo:
13 —Acuérdense de lo que les mandó Moisés, el siervo del Señor, cuando les dijo que el Señor, el Dios de ustedes, les daría esta tierra para que pudieran descansar. 14 Dejen aquí sus mujeres, niños y animales, en esta tierra que Moisés les dio de este lado del Jordán. Pero todos los hombres aptos para la guerra tomen sus armas y vayan delante de sus hermanos, para ayudarlos, 15 hasta que el Señor les dé a ellos un lugar de descanso, como se lo dio a ustedes, y hasta que ellos también sean dueños de la tierra que el Señor les va a dar. Después, ustedes podrán regresar a sus tierras de este lado oriental del río, para tomar posesión definitiva de esta tierra que les dio Moisés, el siervo de Dios.
16 Y ellos contestaron:
—Haremos todo lo que nos has ordenado, e iremos a donde nos mandes. 17 Siempre te obedeceremos, como antes obedecimos a Moisés. Lo único que pedimos es que el Señor tu Dios te acompañe como acompañó a Moisés. 18 Todo el que se te oponga o no obedezca cuanto tú mandes, morirá. Sólo pedimos que tengas valor y firmeza.

Joshua Installed as Leader
1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord,(A) the Lord said to Joshua(B) son of Nun, Moses’ aide: 2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River(C) into the land(D) I am about to give to them(E)—to the Israelites. 3 I will give you every place where you set your foot,(F) as I promised Moses.(G) 4 Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon,(H) and from the great river, the Euphrates(I)—all the Hittite(J) country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.(K) 5 No one will be able to stand against you(L) all the days of your life. As I was with(M) Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake(N) you. 6 Be strong(O) and courageous,(P) because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors(Q) to give them.
7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey(R) all the law(S) my servant Moses(T) gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left,(U) that you may be successful wherever you go.(V) 8 Keep this Book of the Law(W) always on your lips;(X) meditate(Y) on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.(Z) 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid;(AA) do not be discouraged,(AB) for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”(AC)
10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people:(AD) 11 “Go through the camp(AE) and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions(AF) ready. Three days(AG) from now you will cross the Jordan(AH) here to go in and take possession(AI) of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.’”
12 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh,(AJ) Joshua said, 13 “Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you after he said, ‘The Lord your God will give you rest(AK) by giving you this land.’ 14 Your wives,(AL) your children and your livestock may stay in the land(AM) that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, ready for battle,(AN) must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites.(AO) You are to help them 15 until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.”(AP)
16 Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.(AQ) 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you.(AR) Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey(AS) it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!(AT)”
