New English Translation
5 They had worn-out, patched sandals on their feet and dressed in worn-out clothes. All their bread[a] was dry and hard.[b] 6 They came to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land. Make a treaty with us.” 7 The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you live near us.[c] So how can we make a treaty with you?”

5 They put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy. 6 Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal(A) and said to him and the Israelites, “We have come from a distant country;(B) make a treaty(C) with us.”
7 The Israelites said to the Hivites,(D) “But perhaps you live near us, so how can we make a treaty(E) with you?”
