¹⁴ In the morning then you shall come near by your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which ^(A)the Lord takes by lot shall come near by families, and the family which the Lord takes shall come near by households, and the household which the Lord takes shall come near man by man. ^15 (B)It shall be that the one who is taken with the things under the ban shall be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he ^(C)has committed a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”

The Sin of Achan

¹⁶ So Joshua arose early in the morning and brought Israel near by ^[a]tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken. ¹⁷ He brought the family of Judah near, and he took the family of the Zerahites; and he brought the family of the Zerahites near man by man, and Zabdi was taken. ¹⁸ He brought his household near man by man; and ^(D)Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was taken.

²⁰ Thus Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. ²¹ Then he brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its families, and the Matrite family was taken. And Saul the son of Kish was taken; but when they looked for him, he could not be found.

⁴¹ Therefore, Saul said to the Lord, the God of Israel, “^(A)Give a perfect lot.” And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped. ⁴² Saul said, “Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.” And Jonathan was taken.

²³ So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and ^(A)Matthias. ²⁴ And they ^(B)prayed and said, “You, Lord, ^(C)who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two You have chosen ²⁵ to ^[a]occupy ^(D)this ministry and ^(E)apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” ²⁶ And they ^[b](F)drew lots for them, and the lot fell ^[c]to ^(G)Matthias; and he was ^[d]added to ^(H)the eleven apostles.
