The New Generation Circumcised
5 When all the kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted, and there was no longer any spirit in them, because of the Israelites.
2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites a second time.” 3 So Joshua made flint knives, and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath-haaraloth.[a] 4 This is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: all the males of the people who came out of Egypt, all the warriors, had died during the journey through the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt. 5 Although all the people who came out had been circumcised, yet all the people born on the journey through the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt had not been circumcised. 6 For the Israelites traveled forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, the warriors who came out of Egypt, perished, not having listened to the voice of the Lord. To them the Lord swore that he would not let them see the land that he had sworn to their ancestors to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. 7 So it was their children, whom he raised up in their place, that Joshua circumcised; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way.
8 When the circumcising of all the nation was done, they remained in their places in the camp until they were healed. 9 The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away from you the disgrace of Egypt.” And so that place is called Gilgal[b] to this day.
The Passover at Gilgal
10 While the Israelites were camped in Gilgal they kept the passover in the evening on the fourteenth day of the month in the plains of Jericho. 11 On the day after the passover, on that very day, they ate the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. 12 The manna ceased on the day they ate the produce of the land, and the Israelites no longer had manna; they ate the crops of the land of Canaan that year.
Joshua’s Vision
13 Once when Joshua was by Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing before him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you one of us, or one of our adversaries?” 14 He replied, “Neither; but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and he said to him, “What do you command your servant, my lord?” 15 The commander of the army of the Lord said to Joshua, “Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.

Circoncisione della nuova generazione
2 (A)In quel tempo il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Fatti dei coltelli di pietra e torna di nuovo a circoncidere i figli d’Israele». 3 E Giosuè si fece dei coltelli di pietra e circoncise i figli d’Israele sul colle di Aralot. 4 Questo fu il motivo per cui li circoncise: tutti i maschi del popolo uscito dall’Egitto, cioè tutti gli uomini di guerra, erano morti nel deserto durante il viaggio dopo essere usciti dall’Egitto. 5 Tutto il popolo uscito dall’Egitto era circonciso, ma tutto il popolo nato nel deserto durante il viaggio, dopo l’uscita dall’Egitto, non era stato circonciso. 6 Infatti i figli d’Israele avevano camminato per quarant’anni nel deserto, finché tutta la nazione, cioè tutti gli uomini di guerra che erano usciti dall’Egitto, furono distrutti, perché non avevano ubbidito alla voce del Signore. 9 (B)Allora il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Oggi vi ho tolto di dosso[a] l’infamia d’Egitto». E quel luogo fu chiamato Ghilgal[b], nome che dura fino ad oggi. 10 I figli d’Israele si accamparono a Ghilgal e, sulla sera del quattordicesimo giorno del mese, celebrarono la Pasqua nelle pianure di Gerico. 11 L’indomani della Pasqua, in quello stesso giorno, mangiarono i prodotti del paese: pani azzimi e grano arrostito. 12 E la manna cessò l’indomani del giorno in cui mangiarono i prodotti del paese; e i figli d’Israele non ebbero più manna, ma mangiarono, quell’anno stesso, il frutto del paese di Canaan.
Il capo dell’esercito del Signore
13 (C)Mentre Giosuè era presso Gerico, egli alzò gli occhi, guardò, ed ecco un uomo in piedi che gli stava davanti, tenendo in mano la spada sguainata. Giosuè andò verso di lui e gli disse: «Sei tu dei nostri o dei nostri nemici?» 14 E quello rispose: «No, io sono il capo dell’esercito del Signore; arrivo adesso». Allora Giosuè cadde con la faccia a terra, si prostrò e gli disse: «Che cosa vuol dire il mio Signore al suo servo?» 15 Il capo dell’esercito del Signore disse a Giosuè: «Togliti i calzari dai piedi; perché il luogo dove stai è santo». E Giosuè fece così.

5 Als nun alle Könige der Amoriter, die diesseits des Jordan gegen Westen wohnten, und alle Könige der Kanaaniter am Meer hörten, wie der Herr das Wasser des Jordan vor den Söhnen Israels ausgetrocknet hatte, bis sie hinübergezogen waren, da verzagte[a] ihr Herz, und es blieb kein Mut mehr in ihnen vor den Söhnen Israels.
2 Zu der Zeit sprach der Herr zu Josua: Mache dir scharfe Messer[b] und beschneide die Söhne Israels wiederum, zum zweiten Mal!
3 Da machte sich Josua scharfe Messer und beschnitt die Söhne Israels auf dem Hügel Aralot.[c]
4 Und das ist der Grund, warum Josua sie beschnitt: Alles Volk männlichen Geschlechts, das aus Ägypten gezogen war, alle Kriegsleute waren in der Wüste auf dem Weg gestorben, nachdem sie aus Ägypten gezogen waren.
5 Das ganze Volk, das ausgezogen war, war zwar beschnitten; aber das ganze Volk, das auf dem Weg in der Wüste geboren war, nach ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten, war nicht beschnitten worden.
6 Denn die Kinder Israels wanderten 40 Jahre lang in der Wüste, bis das ganze Volk der Kriegsleute umgekommen war, die aus Ägypten gezogen waren, weil sie der Stimme des Herrn nicht gehorcht hatten; wie denn der Herr ihnen geschworen hatte, dass sie das Land nicht sehen sollten, von dem der Herr ihren Vätern geschworen hatte, dass er es uns geben würde — ein Land, in dem Milch und Honig fließt.
7 Ihre Söhne nun, die Er an ihrer Stelle erweckt hatte,[d] die beschnitt Josua; denn sie waren unbeschnitten, weil man sie auf dem Weg nicht beschnitten hatte.
8 Als nun das ganze Volk beschnitten war, blieben sie an ihrem Ort im Lager, bis sie heil wurden.
9 Und der Herr sprach zu Josua: Heute habe ich die Schande Ägyptens von euch abgewälzt! Darum wird jener Ort Gilgal[e] genannt bis zu diesem Tag.
Die Passahfeier. Der Fürst über das Heer des Herrn
10 Während nun die Kinder Israels sich in Gilgal lagerten, hielten sie das Passah am vierzehnten Tag des Monats, am Abend, in den Ebenen von Jericho.
11 Und am Tag nach dem Passah aßen sie von dem Getreide des Landes, nämlich ungesäuertes Brot und geröstetes Korn, an ebendiesem Tag.
12 Und das Manna hörte auf am folgenden Tag, als sie von dem Getreide des Landes aßen; und es gab für die Kinder Israels kein Manna mehr, sondern in jenem Jahr aßen sie vom Ertrag des Landes Kanaan.
13 Es geschah aber, als Josua bei Jericho war, da erhob er seine Augen und sah sich um; und siehe, ein Mann stand ihm gegenüber, der hatte ein blankes Schwert in seiner Hand. Und Josua ging zu ihm und sprach zu ihm: Bist du für uns oder für unsere Feinde?[f]
14 Er aber sprach: Nein, sondern ich bin der Fürst über das Heer des Herrn; jetzt bin ich gekommen! Da fiel Josua auf sein Angesicht zur Erde und betete an und sprach zu ihm: Was redet mein Herr zu seinem Knecht?
15 Und der Fürst über das Heer des Herrn sprach zu Josua: Ziehe deine Schuhe aus von deinen Füßen; denn der Ort, auf dem du stehst, ist heilig! Und Josua tat es.

5 Az Örökkévaló tehát kiszárította a Jordánt, amíg Izráel népe átkelt rajta. Ennek híre ment, és megtudták az emóriak királyai, akik a Jordán nyugati oldalán uralkodtak, meg a kánaániak összes királya is, akik a Nagy-tenger partvidékén uralkodtak. Amikor ezt meghallották, minden bátorságuk elszállt, és rettegtek Izráeltől.
Körülmetélkedés és Páska ünnep az Ígéret Földjén
2 Az Örökkévaló szólt Józsuéhoz: „Készítsetek magatoknak kőkéseket, és végezzétek el Izráel népe között a körülmetélést ebben a második nemzedékben.” 3 Józsué tehát elrendelte, hogy készítsenek éles kőkéseket, és minden férfit metéljenek körül Izráelben. Ezt meg is tették, és azt a helyet, azóta így nevezik: „Körülmetélés-hegy”.
4 Erre pedig azért volt szükség, mert mindazok a felnőtt izráeli férfiak, akik kijöttek Egyiptomból, a pusztai vándorlás hosszú évei alatt már mind meghaltak. 5 Őket az Egyiptomból való kivonulás előtt körülmetélték, de azokat a fiúkat, akik a vándorlás alatt születtek, már nem. 6 Izráel népe 40 éven keresztül vándorolt a pusztában. Ezalatt azok, akik az Egyiptomból való kivonuláskor már hadköteles felnőtt férfiak voltak, mind meghaltak, mert nem engedelmeskedtek az Örökkévaló szavának. Emiatt az Örökkévaló megesküdött, hogy közülük senki sem fogja meglátni azt a tejjel és mézzel folyó földet, amely felől megesküdött őseiknek, hogy azt nekik adja. 7 Tehát most kellett Józsué felügyelete alatt körülmetélni az új nemzedék tagjait — akiket az Örökkévaló az előző nemzedék helyére állított. A vándorlás ideje alatt ugyanis a körülmetélést elmulasztották végrehajtani.
8 Miután az összes férfi körülmetélését befejezték, mindaddig a táborban maradtak, amíg mindenki fel nem gyúgyult.
9 Akkor az Örökkévaló ezt mondta Józsuénak: „Ma távolítottam el rólatok az egyiptomi szolgaság gyalázatát!” Emiatt nevezik azt a helyet mind a mai napig Gilgálnak.[a]
10 Éppen a jerikói síkságon, Gilgálban táboroztak, amikor elkövetkezett az első hónap 14. napja. Ennek estéjén Izráel megtartotta a Páska ünnepét. 11 A következő napon ettek először annak a földnek a terméséből készített ételeket: kovásztalan kenyereket és pörkölt gabonát. 12 A rákövetkező napon megszűnt a manna, és Izráel népe többé nem kapott belőle. Attól kezdve Kánaán földjének termését ették.
Józsué találkozik az Örökkévaló seregének fejedelmével
13 Ekkor történt, hogy Józsué Jerikó közelében meglátott egy férfit, aki kivont karddal a kezében megállt vele szemben. Józsué odalépett hozzá, és megkérdezte: „Közénk tartozol, vagy ellenségeinkhez?”
14 „Egyik sem — válaszolta ő —, hanem az Örökkévaló seregének a vezére vagyok. Most érkeztem.”
Ekkor Józsué nagy tisztelettel a földre borult előtte, és ezt mondta: „Szolgád vagyok, Uram! Mit parancsolsz a szolgádnak?”
15 Az Örökkévaló seregének fejedelme ezt válszolta Józsuénak: „Vedd le a sarudat, mert a föld, ahol vagy, szent!” Józsué engedelmeskedett.

Alors le courage leur manqua et ils perdirent tous leurs moyens en face des Israélites.
La circoncision de la nouvelle génération
2 A cette même époque, l’Eternel dit à Josué : Fais-toi des couteaux de silex et circoncis cette deuxième génération d’Israélites.
3 Josué se munit de couteaux de silex et circoncit les Israélites sur la colline d’Araloth.
4 Voici pourquoi Josué les circoncit : tous les hommes en âge de porter les armes qui étaient sortis d’Egypte étaient morts en chemin dans le désert après avoir quitté l’Egypte. 5 Ils étaient tous circoncis. Mais les garçons nés pendant la traversée du désert, après la sortie d’Egypte, ne l’avaient pas été. 6 Pendant quarante ans, les Israélites avaient marché dans le désert jusqu’à l’extinction de toute la génération des hommes en âge de porter les armes au moment de la sortie d’Egypte. En effet, parce qu’ils n’avaient pas obéi à l’Eternel, l’Eternel avait juré de ne pas leur laisser voir le pays qu’il avait promis par serment à leurs ancêtres de nous donner, ce pays ruisselant de lait et de miel. 7 Mais il leur substitua leurs fils : ce sont eux que Josué circoncit puisqu’ils ne l’avaient pas été pendant la marche dans le désert.
8 Après que tout le peuple eut été circoncis, ils restèrent sur place dans le camp jusqu’à leur guérison. 9 Puis l’Eternel dit à Josué : Aujourd’hui, j’ai fait rouler loin de vous l’opprobre de l’Egypte.
C’est pourquoi cet endroit fut appelé Guilgal (Le roulement), nom qu’il a conservé jusqu’à ce jour.
La célébration de la Pâque – fin de la manne
10 Pendant que les Israélites campaient à Guilgal, ils célébrèrent la Pâque le soir du quatorzième jour du mois, dans les plaines de Jéricho. 11 Le lendemain, ils mangèrent des produits du pays : des pains sans levain et des épis grillés. 12 A partir du lendemain de ce jour-là, la manne[a] cessa de tomber puisqu’ils pouvaient se nourrir des produits du pays ; il n’y eut plus de manne pour les Israélites qui vécurent des productions du pays de Canaan cette année-là.
L’arrivée du chef de l’armée de l’Eternel
13 Un jour où Josué se trouvait près de Jéricho, il vit soudain un individu qui se tenait debout devant lui, avec son épée dégainée à la main. Josué s’avança vers lui et lui demanda : Es-tu des nôtres ou de nos ennemis ?
14 – Non, répondit l’homme. Je suis le chef de l’armée de l’Eternel et je viens maintenant.
Alors Josué se prosterna, le visage contre terre, et lui dit : Seigneur, je suis ton serviteur, quels sont tes ordres ?
15 Le chef de l’armée de l’Eternel lui répondit : Ote tes sandales de tes pieds, car l’endroit où tu te tiens est un lieu saint.
Et Josué obéit.
