Rahab Shelters Spies
2 Then Joshua the son of Nun sent two men as spies secretly from (A)Shittim, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of (B)a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and rested there. 2 But it was told to the king of Jericho, saying, “Behold, men from the sons of Israel have come here tonight to spy out the land.” 3 And the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to spy out all the land.” 4 But the (C)woman had taken the two men and hidden them, and she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. 5 It came about, when it was time to shut the gate at dark, that the men went out; I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.” 6 But (D)she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them in the stalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof. 7 So the men pursued them on the road to the Jordan, to the crossing places; and as soon as those who were pursuing them had gone out, they shut the gate.
8 Now before [a]the spies lay down, she came up to them on the roof, 9 and said to the men, “(E)I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the (F)terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have despaired because of you. 10 (G)For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the [b]Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and (H)what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you [c]utterly destroyed. 11 When we heard these reports, (I)our hearts melted and no [d]courage remained in anyone any longer because of you; for the (J)Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth below. 12 Now then, please swear to me by the Lord, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father’s household, and give me a (K)pledge of [e]truth, 13 and [f]spare my father and my mother, and my brothers and my sisters, and all who belong to them, and save our [g]lives from death.” 14 So the men said to her, “Our [h]life [i]for yours if you do not tell this business of ours; and it shall come about when the Lord gives us the land that we will (L)deal kindly and [j]faithfully with you.”
The Promise to Rahab
15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the city wall, so that she was living on the wall. 16 And she said to them, “(M)Go to the hill country, so that the pursuers will not encounter you, and hide yourselves there for three days until the pursuers return. Then afterward you may go on your way.” 17 And the men said to her, “(N)We shall be exempt from this oath [k]to you which you have made us swear, 18 [l]unless, when we come into the land, you tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you let us down, and (O)gather into your house your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household. 19 And it shall come about that anyone who goes out of the doors of your house outside will have [m]his blood on his own head, and we will be innocent; but anyone who is with you in the house, (P)his blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on him. 20 But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be exempt from the oath which you have made us swear.” 21 She then said, “According to your words, so be it.” So she sent them away, and they departed; and she tied the scarlet cord in the window.
22 So they departed and came to the hill country, and remained there for three days, until the pursuers returned. Now the pursuers had searched for them [n]all along the road, but had not found them. 23 Then the two men returned and came down from the hill country, and they crossed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun. Then they reported to him all that had happened to them. 24 And they said to Joshua, “The Lord has indeed handed over to us all the land; furthermore, (Q)all the inhabitants of the land have despaired because of us.”

Rahab and the Spies
2 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies(A) from Shittim.(B) “Go, look over(C) the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.(D)” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab(E) and stayed there.
2 The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” 3 So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab:(F) “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.”
4 But the woman had taken the two men(G) and hidden them.(H) She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. 5 At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate,(I) they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.”(J) 6 (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax(K) she had laid out on the roof.)(L) 7 So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan,(M) and as soon as the pursuers(N) had gone out, the gate was shut.
8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof(O) 9 and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear(P) of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the Lord dried up(Q) the water of the Red Sea[a] for you when you came out of Egypt,(R) and what you did to Sihon and Og,(S) the two kings of the Amorites(T) east of the Jordan,(U) whom you completely destroyed.[b](V) 11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear(W) and everyone’s courage failed(X) because of you,(Y) for the Lord your God(Z) is God in heaven above and on the earth(AA) below.
12 “Now then, please swear to me(AB) by the Lord that you will show kindness(AC) to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign(AD) 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them(AE)—and that you will save us from death.”
14 “Our lives for your lives!”(AF) the men assured her. “If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully(AG) when the Lord gives us the land.”
15 So she let them down by a rope(AH) through the window,(AI) for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. 16 She said to them, “Go to the hills(AJ) so the pursuers(AK) will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days(AL) until they return, and then go on your way.”(AM)
17 Now the men had said to her, “This oath(AN) you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord(AO) in the window(AP) through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family(AQ) into your house. 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads;(AR) we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head(AS) if a hand is laid on them. 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.(AT)”
21 “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.”
So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord(AU) in the window.(AV)
22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days,(AW) until the pursuers(AX) had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. 23 Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. 24 They said to Joshua, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands;(AY) all the people are melting in fear(AZ) because of us.”

2 Joshua the son of Nun sent two men as scouts secretly from Shittim, saying, “Go, view the land, especially [a]Jericho [the walled city].” So they went and came to the house of a prostitute named Rahab, and lodged there. 2 Now the king of Jericho was told, “Behold, men from the sons of Israel have come here tonight to spy and search out the land.” 3 So the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, because they have come [as spies] to search out all the land.” 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them; so she said, “Yes, two men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. 5 When it was time to close the [city] gate at dark, the men left; I do not know where they went. Pursue them quickly, for [if you do] you will overtake them.” 6 But [in fact] she had brought the scouts up to the roof and had hidden them under the [b]stalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof [to dry]. 7 So the [king’s] men pursued them on the road to the Jordan as far as the [c]fords [east of Jericho]; as soon as the pursuers had gone out after them, the gate [of the city] was shut.
8 Now before the two men lay down [to sleep], Rahab came up to them on the roof, 9 and she said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the terror and dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have melted [in despair] because of you. 10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the [d]Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan [on the east], to Sihon and Og, whom you [e]utterly destroyed. 11 When we heard it, our hearts melted [in despair], and a [fighting] spirit no longer remained in any man because of you; for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.(A) 12 And now, please swear [an oath] to me by the Lord, since I have shown you kindness, that you also will show kindness to my father’s household (family), and give me a pledge of truth and faithfulness, 13 and spare my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters, along with everyone who belongs to them, and let us all live.” 14 So the men said to her, “Our lives for yours if you do not tell [anyone about] this business of ours; then when the Lord gives us the land we will show you kindness and faithfulness [and keep our agreement with you].”

15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built [f]into the city wall, so that she was living on the wall. 16 And she said to them, “Go [west] to the hill country, so that the pursuers [who have headed east] will not encounter you; hide yourselves there for three days until the pursuers return. Then afterward you can go your way.” 17 The men said to her, “We shall be blameless and free from this oath which you have made us swear, 18 unless, when we come into the land, you tie this [g]cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you let us down, and bring into the house your father and your mother and your brothers and all your father’s household [so that they will be safe]. 19 But if anyone goes out the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head [that is, his own responsibility], and we shall be blameless and free [from our oath]; however, if a hand is laid on anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head. 20 But if you tell [anyone] this business of ours, we shall be blameless and free from the oath which you made us swear.” 21 She said, “According to your words, so be it.” Then Rahab sent them off, and they departed; and she tied the scarlet cord in the window.
22 They left and went [on their way] to the hill country [west of Jericho], and stayed there [hidden in the caves] three days until the pursuers returned. The pursuers had searched all along the road but had not found them. 23 Then the two men turned back and came down from the hill country and crossed over [the Jordan] and came to Joshua the son of Nun [at Shittim], and told him everything that had happened to them. 24 They said to Joshua, “Certainly the Lord has given all the land into our hands; for all the inhabitants of the land have melted [in despair] because of us.”

- Joshua 2:1 Jericho, an oasis near the Jordan River, is believed to be one of the world’s oldest inhabited sites. Its name is derived from the Hebrew word for “moon,” implying that it may have been a center of worship for various lunar gods.
- Joshua 2:6 Flax was used to make linen and the flat rooftop of a house was a convenient place to lay the stalks in the sun to dry.
- Joshua 2:7 I.e. narrow or shallow places where the river could be crossed by wading.
- Joshua 2:10 Lit Sea of Reeds.
- Joshua 2:10 The conquest of the land and the destruction of its inhabitants were acts of divine judgment decreed by God, and carried out through acts of obedience by Joshua and the sons of Israel.
- Joshua 2:15 Modern archaeology indicates that the house may have been built against the wall, so that the city wall also formed the back wall of the house. Otherwise, it may have been built partially or entirely in the wall. The Hebrew preposition (“into/in”) has too wide a range of meaning to be precise.
- Joshua 2:18 The scarlet cord in Rahab’s window may be considered analogous to the blood on the doorposts on the first Passover night in Egypt (Ex 12:13). God allowed her life to be saved and also changed. She became an ancestress, as did Ruth, of David and of Jesus Christ (Matt 1:1, 5, 6).

2 E enviou Josué, filho de Num, dois homens desde Sitim a espiar secretamente, dizendo: Andai e observai a terra e a Jericó. Foram, pois, e entraram na casa de uma mulher prostituta, cujo nome era Raabe, e dormiram ali. 2 Então, deu-se notícia ao rei de Jericó, dizendo: Eis que esta noite vieram aqui uns homens dos filhos de Israel para espiar a terra. 3 Pelo que enviou o rei de Jericó a Raabe, dizendo: Tira fora os homens que vieram a ti e entraram na tua casa, porque vieram espiar toda a terra. 4 Porém aquela mulher tomou a ambos aqueles homens, e os escondeu, e disse: É verdade que vieram homens a mim, porém eu não sabia de onde eram. 5 E aconteceu que, havendo-se de fechar a porta, sendo já escuro, aqueles homens saíram; não sei para onde aqueles homens se foram; ide após eles depressa, porque vós os alcançareis. 6 Porém ela os tinha feito subir ao telhado e os tinha escondido entre as canas do linho, que pusera em ordem sobre o telhado. 7 E foram-se aqueles homens após os espias, pelo caminho do Jordão, até aos vaus; e fechou-se a porta, havendo saído os que iam após eles.
8 E, antes que eles dormissem, ela subiu a eles sobre o telhado 9 e disse aos homens: Bem sei que o Senhor vos deu esta terra, e que o pavor de vós caiu sobre nós, e que todos os moradores da terra estão desmaiados diante de vós. 10 Porque temos ouvido que o Senhor secou as águas do mar Vermelho diante de vós, quando saíeis do Egito, e o que fizestes aos dois reis dos amorreus, a Seom e a Ogue, que estavam dalém do Jordão, os quais destruístes. 11 Ouvindo isso, desmaiou o nosso coração, e em ninguém mais há ânimo algum, por causa da vossa presença; porque o Senhor, vosso Deus, é Deus em cima nos céus e embaixo na terra. 12 Agora, pois, jurai-me, vos peço, pelo Senhor, pois que vos fiz beneficência, que vós também fareis beneficência à casa de meu pai, e dai-me um sinal certo, 13 de que dareis a vida a meu pai e a minha mãe, como também a meus irmãos e a minhas irmãs, com tudo o que têm, e de que livrareis as nossas vidas da morte. 14 Então, aqueles homens responderam-lhe: A nossa vida responderá pela vossa até ao ponto de morrer, se não denunciardes este nosso negócio; e será, pois, que, dando-nos o Senhor esta terra, usaremos contigo de beneficência e de fidelidade. 15 Ela, então, os fez descer por uma corda pela janela, porquanto a sua casa estava sobre o muro da cidade, e ela morava sobre o muro. 16 E disse-lhes: Ide-vos ao monte, para que, porventura, vos não encontrem os perseguidores; e escondei-vos lá três dias, até que voltem os perseguidores, e, depois, ide pelo vosso caminho. 17 E disseram-lhe aqueles homens: Desobrigados seremos deste teu juramento que nos fizeste jurar, 18 se, vindo nós à terra, não atares este cordão de fio de escarlata à janela por onde nos fizeste descer; e se não recolheres em casa contigo a teu pai, e a tua mãe, e a teus irmãos, e a toda a família de teu pai. 19 Será, pois, que qualquer que sair fora da porta da tua casa, o seu sangue será sobre a sua cabeça, e nós seremos sem culpa; mas qualquer que estiver contigo em casa, o seu sangue seja sobre a nossa cabeça, se nele se puser mão. 20 Também, se tu denunciares esse nosso negócio, seremos desobrigados do teu juramento, que nos fizeste jurar. 21 E ela disse: Conforme as vossas palavras, assim seja. Então, os despediu; e eles se foram; e ela atou o cordão de escarlata à janela.
22 Foram-se, pois, e chegaram ao monte, e ficaram ali três dias, até que voltaram os perseguidores; porque os perseguidores os buscaram por todo o caminho, porém não os acharam. 23 Assim, aqueles dois homens voltaram, e desceram do monte, e passaram, e vieram a Josué, filho de Num, e contaram-lhe tudo quanto lhes acontecera; 24 e disseram a Josué: Certamente o Senhor tem dado toda esta terra nas nossas mãos, pois até todos os moradores estão desmaiados diante de nós.

Raabe e os Espiões
2 Então Josué, filho de Num, enviou secretamente de Sitim dois espiões e lhes disse: “Vão examinar a terra, especialmente Jericó”. Eles foram e entraram na casa de uma prostituta chamada Raabe, e ali passaram a noite.
2 Todavia, o rei de Jericó foi avisado: “Alguns israelitas vieram aqui esta noite para espionar a terra”. 3 Diante disso, o rei de Jericó enviou esta mensagem a Raabe: “Mande embora os homens que entraram em sua casa, pois vieram espionar a terra toda”.
4 Mas a mulher que tinha escondido os dois homens respondeu: “É verdade que os homens vieram a mim, mas eu não sabia de onde tinham vindo. 5 Ao anoitecer, na hora de fechar a porta da cidade, eles partiram. Não sei por onde foram. Corram atrás deles. Talvez os alcancem”. 6 Ela, porém, os tinha levado para o terraço e os tinha escondido sob os talos de linho que havia arrumado lá.
7 Os perseguidores partiram atrás deles pelo caminho que vai para o lugar de passagem do Jordão. E logo que saíram, a porta foi trancada.
8 Antes dos espiões se deitarem, Raabe subiu ao terraço 9 e lhes disse: “Sei que o Senhor lhes deu esta terra. Vocês nos causaram um medo terrível, e todos os habitantes desta terra estão apavorados por causa de vocês. 10 Pois temos ouvido como o Senhor secou as águas do mar Vermelho perante vocês quando saíram do Egito, e o que vocês fizeram a leste do Jordão com Seom e Ogue, os dois reis amorreus que vocês aniquilaram. 11 Quando soubemos disso, o povo desanimou-se completamente, e por causa de vocês todos perderam a coragem, pois o Senhor, o seu Deus, é Deus em cima nos céus e embaixo na terra. 12 Jurem-me pelo Senhor que, assim como eu fui bondosa com vocês, vocês também serão bondosos com a minha família. Dêem-me um sinal seguro 13 de que pouparão a vida de meu pai e de minha mãe, de meus irmãos e de minhas irmãs, e de tudo o que lhes pertence. Livrem-nos da morte”.
14 “A nossa vida pela de vocês!”, os homens lhe garantiram. “Se você não contar o que estamos fazendo, nós a trataremos com bondade e fidelidade quando o Senhor nos der a terra.”
15 Então Raabe os ajudou a descer pela janela com uma corda, pois a casa em que morava fazia parte do muro da cidade, 16 e lhes disse: “Vão para aquela montanha, para que os perseguidores não os encontrem. Escondam-se lá por três dias, até que eles voltem; depois poderão seguir o seu caminho”.
17 Os homens lhe disseram: “Estaremos livres do juramento que você nos levou a fazer 18 se, quando entrarmos na terra, você não tiver amarrado este cordão vermelho na janela pela qual nos ajudou a descer, e se não tiver trazido para a sua casa o seu pai e a sua mãe, os seus irmãos e toda a sua família. 19 Qualquer pessoa que sair da casa será responsável por sua própria morte; nós seremos inocentes. Mas, seremos responsáveis pela morte de quem estiver na casa com você, caso alguém toque nessa pessoa. 20 E se você contar o que estamos fazendo, estaremos livres do juramento que você nos levou a fazer”.
21 “Seja como vocês disseram”, respondeu Raabe. Assim ela os despediu, e eles partiram. Depois ela amarrou o cordão vermelho na janela.
22 Quando partiram, foram para a montanha e ali ficaram três dias, até que os seus perseguidores regressassem. Estes os procuraram ao longo de todo o caminho e não os acharam. 23 Por fim os dois homens voltaram; desceram a montanha, atravessaram o rio e chegaram a Josué, filho de Num, e lhe contaram tudo o que lhes havia acontecido. 24 E disseram a Josué: “Sem dúvida o Senhor entregou a terra toda em nossas mãos; todos estão apavorados por nossa causa”.
