And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;

And she said unto the men, I know that the Lord hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the Lord, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token:

13 And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.

14 And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the Lord hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof(A) and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear(B) of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the Lord dried up(C) the water of the Red Sea[a] for you when you came out of Egypt,(D) and what you did to Sihon and Og,(E) the two kings of the Amorites(F) east of the Jordan,(G) whom you completely destroyed.[b](H) 11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear(I) and everyone’s courage failed(J) because of you,(K) for the Lord your God(L) is God in heaven above and on the earth(M) below.

12 “Now then, please swear to me(N) by the Lord that you will show kindness(O) to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign(P) 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them(Q)—and that you will save us from death.”

14 “Our lives for your lives!”(R) the men assured her. “If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully(S) when the Lord gives us the land.”

  1. Joshua 2:10 Or the Sea of Reeds
  2. Joshua 2:10 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them.

21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.

22 But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot's house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.

23 And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.

24 And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord.

25 And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father's household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

26 And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the Lord, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.

21 They devoted(A) the city to the Lord and destroyed(B) with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.

22 Joshua said to the two men(C) who had spied out(D) the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.(E) 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her.(F) They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.

24 Then they burned the whole city(G) and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(H) into the treasury of the Lord’s house.(I) 25 But Joshua spared(J) Rahab the prostitute,(K) with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho(L)—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.

26 At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath:(M) “Cursed(N) before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:

“At the cost of his firstborn son
    he will lay its foundations;
at the cost of his youngest
    he will set up its gates.”(O)
