Now (A)Zelophehad the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, had no sons, but only daughters, and these are the names of his daughters: (B)Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. They approached (C)Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the leaders and said, (D)“The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance along with our brothers.” So according to the mouth of the Lord he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father. Thus there fell to Manasseh ten portions, besides (E)the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is on the other side of the Jordan, because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance along with his sons. The land of Gilead was allotted to the rest of the people of Manasseh.

The territory of Manasseh reached from Asher to (F)Michmethath, which is east of Shechem. Then the boundary goes along southward to the inhabitants of En-tappuah. The land of (G)Tappuah belonged to Manasseh, but the town of Tappuah on the boundary of Manasseh belonged to the people of Ephraim. (H)Then the boundary went down to the brook Kanah. These cities, to the south of the brook, among the cities of Manasseh, belong to Ephraim. Then the boundary of Manasseh goes on the north side of the brook and ends at the sea, 10 the land to the south being Ephraim's and that to the north being Manasseh's, with the sea forming its boundary. On the north Asher is reached, and on the east Issachar. 11 Also in Issachar and in Asher (I)Manasseh had Beth-shean and its villages, and Ibleam and its villages, and the inhabitants of (J)Dor and its villages, and the inhabitants of En-dor and its villages, and the inhabitants of (K)Taanach and its villages, and the inhabitants of (L)Megiddo and its villages; (M)the third is Naphath.[a] 12 (N)Yet the people of Manasseh could not take possession of those cities, but the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. 13 Now when the people of Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites (O)to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.

14 Then (P)the people of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, “Why have you given me but (Q)one lot and one portion as an inheritance, although I am (R)a numerous people, since all along the Lord has blessed me?” 15 And Joshua said to them, “If you are a numerous people, go up by yourselves to the forest, and there clear ground for yourselves in the land of the Perizzites and (S)the Rephaim, since (T)the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.” 16 The people of Joseph said, “The hill country is not enough for us. Yet all the Canaanites who dwell in the plain have (U)chariots of iron, both those in Beth-shean and its villages and those in (V)the Valley of Jezreel.” 17 Then Joshua said to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh, “You are a numerous people and have great power. You shall not have one allotment only, 18 but the hill country shall be yours, for though it is a forest, you shall clear it and possess it to its farthest borders. For you shall drive out the Canaanites, (W)though they have chariots of iron, and though they are strong.”

  1. Joshua 17:11 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain

Now Zelophehad son of Hepher,(A) the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons but only daughters,(B) whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance along with the brothers of their father, according to the Lord’s command.(C) Manasseh’s share consisted of ten tracts of land besides Gilead and Bashan east of the Jordan,(D) because the daughters of the tribe of Manasseh received an inheritance among the sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the descendants of Manasseh.

The territory of Manasseh extended from Asher(E) to Mikmethath(F) east of Shechem.(G) The boundary ran southward from there to include the people living at En Tappuah. (Manasseh had the land of Tappuah, but Tappuah(H) itself, on the boundary of Manasseh, belonged to the Ephraimites.) Then the boundary continued south to the Kanah Ravine.(I) There were towns belonging to Ephraim lying among the towns of Manasseh, but the boundary of Manasseh was the northern side of the ravine and ended at the Mediterranean Sea. 10 On the south the land belonged to Ephraim, on the north to Manasseh. The territory of Manasseh reached the Mediterranean Sea and bordered Asher(J) on the north and Issachar(K) on the east.(L)

11 Within Issachar(M) and Asher, Manasseh also had Beth Shan,(N) Ibleam(O) and the people of Dor,(P) Endor,(Q) Taanach(R) and Megiddo,(S) together with their surrounding settlements (the third in the list is Naphoth[a]).(T)

12 Yet the Manassites were not able(U) to occupy these towns, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that region. 13 However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labor but did not drive them out completely.(V)

14 The people of Joseph said to Joshua, “Why have you given us only one allotment and one portion for an inheritance? We are a numerous people, and the Lord has blessed us abundantly.”(W)

15 “If you are so numerous,” Joshua answered, “and if the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go up into the forest(X) and clear land for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzites(Y) and Rephaites.(Z)

16 The people of Joseph replied, “The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who live in the plain have chariots fitted with iron,(AA) both those in Beth Shan(AB) and its settlements and those in the Valley of Jezreel.”(AC)

17 But Joshua said to the tribes of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh—“You are numerous and very powerful. You will have not only one allotment(AD) 18 but the forested hill country(AE) as well. Clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours; though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron(AF) and though they are strong, you can drive them out.”

  1. Joshua 17:11 That is, Naphoth Dor

The Lord Surrounds His People

A Song of (A)Ascents.

125 Those who (B)trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which (C)cannot be moved, but abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so (D)the Lord surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore.
For (E)the scepter of wickedness shall not (F)rest
on (G)the land allotted to the righteous,
lest the righteous (H)stretch out
    their hands to do wrong.
(I)Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,
and to those who are (J)upright in their hearts!
But those who (K)turn aside to their (L)crooked ways
the Lord will lead away with (M)evildoers!
    (N)Peace be upon Israel!

Psalm 125

A song of ascents.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,(A)
which cannot be shaken(B) but endures forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,(C)
so the Lord surrounds(D) his people
    both now and forevermore.

The scepter(E) of the wicked will not remain(F)
over the land allotted to the righteous,
for then the righteous might use
    their hands to do evil.(G)

Lord, do good(H) to those who are good,
to those who are upright in heart.(I)
But those who turn(J) to crooked ways(K)
the Lord will banish(L) with the evildoers.

Peace be on Israel.(M)

They Had Everything in Common

32 Now the full number of those who believed were of (A)one heart and (B)soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but (C)they had everything in common. 33 And with great (D)power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and (E)great grace was upon them all. 34 (F)There was not a needy person among them, for (G)as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35 and (H)laid it at the apostles' feet, and (I)it was distributed to each as any had need. 36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means (J)son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, 37 sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and (K)laid it at the apostles' feet.

The Believers Share Their Possessions

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.(A) 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify(B) to the resurrection(C) of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace(D) was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them,(E) brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet,(F) and it was distributed to anyone who had need.(G)

36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas(H) (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.(I)
