13 Först skickade man emellertid iväg Pinechas, prästen Elasars son, till Gilead till Rubens och Gads stammar och halva Manasses stam. 14 Med honom fanns tio ledare från Israel, en från varje stam, och dessa var också huvudmän för sina familjer. 15 När de kommit in i Gileads land, sa de till rubeniterna, gaditerna och ena hälften av Manasses stam:
16 ”Hela Herrens församling[a] vill veta varför ni gör uppror mot Israels Gud och vänder er bort från Herren genom att bygga ett altare. 17 Var det inte nog med att vi syndade vid Pegor?[b] Var inte denna synd som vi ännu inte blivit renade från, trots alla plågor som drabbat Herrens församling, tillräckligt stor? 18 Ska ni nu göra uppror mot Herren igen? Om ni reser er upp mot Herren idag, kommer han att straffa hela Israels menighet imorgon. 19 Om ert eget land är orent, då kan ni komma över till oss och slå er ner här på vår sida av floden där Herren bor bland oss i sitt tält. Men sätt er inte upp mot Herren och dra inte skuld över oss andra genom att bygga ett annat altare än det som redan finns rest till Herren, vår Gud! 20 Straffades inte hela den israelitiska menigheten den gången när Akan, Serachs ättling, hade stulit av det som var vigt åt förintelse? Fler än han fick sätta livet till på grund av hans synd![c]”
21 Då svarade Rubens och Gads stammar och ena hälften av Manasses stam de israelitiska släktöverhuvudena: 22 ”Gud den mäktige, Herren den mäktige, Herren Gud vet och Israel ska också veta det! Om vi har byggt detta altare i uppror och otrohet mot Herren, så rädda oss inte i dag! 23 Vi har inte rest detta altare för att offra brännoffer eller matoffer eller gemenskapsoffer. Må Herren själv straffa oss om det var därför vi gjorde det! 24 Vi gjorde det därför att vi är rädda för att era barn i framtiden ska säga till våra barn: ’Vad har ni med Herren, Israels Gud, att göra? 25 Herren har låtit Jordan bli en gräns mellan oss och er, ni rubeniter och gaditer. Ni har ingen del i Herren!’ Era barn kanske får våra barn att sluta frukta Herren. 26 Därför beslöt vi att bygga altaret, inte för bränn- eller slaktoffer, 27 utan som ett vittne för oss och er för att visa våra barn och era barn att vi också tillber Herren med våra bränn- och slaktoffer och gemenskapsoffer. På så sätt ska inte era barn ha någon anledning att säga till våra barn: ’Ni har ingen del i Herren’. 28 Vi tänkte att om de skulle säga detta till oss och våra barn, då kan vi svara: ’Se på altaret som våra förfäder byggde med Herrens altare som förebild. Det är inte avsett för brännoffer eller slaktoffer utan står som ett vittne mellan oss och er.’
29 Vi skulle aldrig komma på tanken att vända oss bort från Herren eller att göra uppror mot honom genom att bygga ett eget altare för brännoffer, matoffer eller slaktoffer. Det är bara altaret framför Herrens, vår Guds, boning som ska användas till detta.”
30 När prästen Pinechas och ledarna och överhuvudena för de andra stammarna hörde detta från Rubens och Gads stammar och ena hälften av Manasses stam, godtog de förklaringen.
31 Pinechas, prästen Elasars son svarade dem: ”Idag vet vi att Herren är mitt ibland oss, eftersom ni inte har varit trolösa mot Herren som vi trodde. Ni har räddat Israel från Herrens straff.”
32 Sedan gick Pinechas, prästen Elasars son och de andra ledarna tillbaka från Rubens och Gads stammar i Gilead till de övriga israeliterna i Kanaan och talade om vad som hade hänt. 33 Israeliterna var nöjda med förklaringen och alla prisade Gud. Sedan talade man inte längre om att börja krig mot Rubens och Gads stammar och ödelägga deras land.
34 Rubeniterna och gaditerna gav altaret namnet: ”Ett vittne mellan oss att Herren är Gud.”

13 Then the sons of Israel sent Phinehas the son of the religious leader Eleazar into the land of Gilead to the people of Reuben and Gad and the half-family group of Manasseh. 14 With him were ten leaders, one leader from each ruling house in every family of Israel. Each one was the head of his father’s house among the families of Israel. 15 They came to the people of Reuben and Gad and the half-family group of Manasseh in the land of Gilead, and said to them, 16 “All the people of the Lord say, ‘What sin is this that you have done against the God of Israel? You have turned away from following the Lord this day, by building yourselves an altar. Today you have gone against the Lord. 17 Is not the sin of Peor enough for us? We have made ourselves unclean from that to this day, and much trouble has come upon the people of the Lord. 18 Now to add to that sin, this day you have turned away from following the Lord. If you go against the Lord today, He will be angry with all the people of Israel tomorrow. 19 Now if the land you have been given is unclean, cross over into the Lord’s land. There stands the meeting tent of the Lord. Take land for yourselves among us. But do not go against the Lord, or against us, by building an altar other than the altar of the Lord our God. 20 Did not Zerah’s son Achan sin by taking things that should have been destroyed? Anger came upon all the people of Israel. He did not die alone for his sin.’” 21 Then the people of Reuben and Gad and the half-family group of Manasseh answered the leaders of the families of Israel, saying, 22 “The Powerful One, the Lord, the Powerful One, God, the Lord! He knows! And may Israel itself know! If it was going against the Lord and not being faithful to Him, do not save us this day! 23 If we have built an altar to turn away from following the Lord, or to give burnt gifts, grain gifts or peace gifts on it, may the Lord Himself punish us. 24 We have done this because we were afraid that in time to come your children might say to our children, ‘What have you to do with the Lord, the God of Israel? 25 For the Lord has put the Jordan between us and you people of Reuben and Gad. You have nothing to do with the Lord.’ Then your children might make our children stop worshiping the Lord. 26 So we said, ‘Let us build an altar. It will not be for burnt gifts or killing animals in worship. 27 But it will be something special to be seen between us and you and our children after us. It will show that we are to serve the Lord before Him with our burnt gifts, our gifts of animals and our peace gifts. Then your children will not say to our children in the future, “You have nothing to do with the Lord.”’ 28 We thought that if they say this to us or our children in the future we can say, ‘See the altar we have made like the altar of the Lord which our fathers made. It is not for burnt gifts or killing animals in worship. But it is something special to see between us and you.’ 29 Never let it be said that we went against the Lord and turned away from following the Lord this day by building an altar. It is not for burnt gifts or grain gifts or killing animals in worship. It is not to be used instead of the altar of the Lord our God before His meeting tent.”
30 Phinehas the religious leader and the leaders of the people, the heads of the families of Israel who were with him, were pleased when they heard the words of the people of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh. 31 Phinehas the son of Eleazar the religious leader said to the people of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is among us. Because you have not done this as sin against the Lord. Now you have saved the people of Israel from the hand of the Lord.” 32 Then Phinehas the son of the religious leader Eleazar and the leaders left the people of Reuben and Gad. They returned from the land of Gilead to the people of Israel in the land of Canaan. And they told them what had happened. 33 The news pleased the people of Israel, and they gave thanks to God. They said no more about going against them in war, to destroy the land where the people of Reuben and Gad were living. 34 The people of Reuben and Gad said, “This altar shows the agreement between us that the Lord is God.”

13 So the Israelites sent Phinehas(A) son of Eleazar,(B) the priest, to the land of Gilead—to Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh. 14 With him they sent ten of the chief men, one from each of the tribes of Israel, each the head of a family division among the Israelite clans.(C)
15 When they went to Gilead—to Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh—they said to them: 16 “The whole assembly of the Lord says: ‘How could you break faith(D) with the God of Israel like this? How could you turn away from the Lord and build yourselves an altar in rebellion(E) against him now? 17 Was not the sin of Peor(F) enough for us? Up to this very day we have not cleansed ourselves from that sin, even though a plague fell on the community of the Lord! 18 And are you now turning away from the Lord?
“‘If you rebel against the Lord today, tomorrow he will be angry with the whole community(G) of Israel. 19 If the land you possess is defiled, come over to the Lord’s land, where the Lord’s tabernacle(H) stands, and share the land with us. But do not rebel against the Lord or against us by building an altar(I) for yourselves, other than the altar of the Lord our God. 20 When Achan son of Zerah was unfaithful in regard to the devoted things,[a](J) did not wrath(K) come on the whole community(L) of Israel? He was not the only one who died for his sin.’”(M)
21 Then Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh replied to the heads of the clans of Israel: 22 “The Mighty One, God, the Lord! The Mighty One, God,(N) the Lord!(O) He knows!(P) And let Israel know! If this has been in rebellion or disobedience to the Lord, do not spare us this day. 23 If we have built our own altar to turn away from the Lord and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings,(Q) or to sacrifice fellowship offerings on it, may the Lord himself call us to account.(R)
24 “No! We did it for fear that some day your descendants might say to ours, ‘What do you have to do with the Lord, the God of Israel? 25 The Lord has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you—you Reubenites and Gadites! You have no share in the Lord.’ So your descendants might cause ours to stop fearing the Lord.
26 “That is why we said, ‘Let us get ready and build an altar—but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.’ 27 On the contrary, it is to be a witness(S) between us and you and the generations that follow, that we will worship the Lord at his sanctuary with our burnt offerings, sacrifices and fellowship offerings.(T) Then in the future your descendants will not be able to say to ours, ‘You have no share in the Lord.’
28 “And we said, ‘If they ever say this to us, or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the replica of the Lord’s altar, which our ancestors built, not for burnt offerings and sacrifices, but as a witness(U) between us and you.’
29 “Far be it from us to rebel(V) against the Lord and turn away from him today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings and sacrifices, other than the altar of the Lord our God that stands before his tabernacle.(W)”
30 When Phinehas the priest and the leaders of the community—the heads of the clans of the Israelites—heard what Reuben, Gad and Manasseh had to say, they were pleased. 31 And Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, said to Reuben, Gad and Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is with us,(X) because you have not been unfaithful to the Lord in this matter. Now you have rescued the Israelites from the Lord’s hand.”
32 Then Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, and the leaders returned to Canaan from their meeting with the Reubenites and Gadites in Gilead and reported to the Israelites.(Y) 33 They were glad to hear the report and praised God.(Z) And they talked no more about going to war against them to devastate the country where the Reubenites and the Gadites lived.
34 And the Reubenites and the Gadites gave the altar this name: A Witness(AA) Between Us—that the Lord is God.
