²² Then Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ^(A)‘We are very far from you,’ when ^(B)you dwell near us?

⁶ And they went to Joshua, ^(A)to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country; now therefore, make a ^[a]covenant with us.”

¹⁶ And it happened at the end of three days, after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors who dwelt near them.

⁹ So they said to him: ^(A)“From a very far country your servants have come, because of the name of the Lord your God; for we have ^(B)heard of His fame, and all that He did in Egypt, ¹⁰ and ^(C)all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan—to Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.

²⁵ So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you ^(A)deceived me?”

Jacob Escapes from Esau

⁴¹ So Esau ^(A)hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, ^(B)“The days of mourning for my father ^[a]are at hand; ^(C)then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

⁴² And the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, “Surely your brother Esau ^(D)comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you. ⁴³ Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: arise, flee to my brother Laban ^(E)in Haran. ⁴⁴ And stay with him a ^(F)few days, until your brother’s fury turns away, ⁴⁵ until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereaved also of you both in one day?”

³⁵ But he said, “Your brother came with deceit and has taken away your blessing.”

³⁶ And Esau said, ^(A)“Is he not rightly named ^[a]Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”

¹³ And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, ^(A)“The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

¹⁴ So the Lord God said to the serpent:

³ But I fear, lest somehow, as ^(A)the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds ^(B)may be corrupted from the ^[a]simplicity that is in Christ.
