¹⁸ But the people of Israel did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. Then all the congregation murmured against the leaders.

^2 (A)It is the same for all, since ^(B)the same event happens to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil,^[a] to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As the good one is, so is the sinner, and he who ^(C)swears is as he who shuns an oath.

⁶ Let not your mouth lead you^[a] into sin, and do not say before ^(A)the messenger^[b] that it was ^(B)a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands?

^2 [a] Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore ^(A)let your words be few.

⁷ But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Saul's son Jonathan, because of ^(A)the oath of the Lord that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.
