¹¹ So our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, ‘Take provisions in your hand for the journey; go to meet them, and say to them, “We are your servants; come now, make a treaty with us.” ’

¹⁷ In every province and in every city, wherever the king’s command and his edict came, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a festival and a holiday. Furthermore, many of the peoples of the country professed to be Jews because the fear of the Jews had fallen upon them.^(A)

⁸ They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” And Joshua said to them, “Who are you? And where do you come from?”^(A)

³ He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey: no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money—not even an extra tunic.^(A)

⁹ Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, ¹⁰ no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff, for laborers deserve their food.^(A)

¹¹ “Pass through the camp and command the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for in three days you are to cross over this Jordan, to go in to take possession of the land that the Lord your God gives you to possess.’ ”^(A)

¹² Take double the money with you. Carry back with you the money that was returned in the top of your sacks; perhaps it was an oversight.^(A)
