⁵ and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six of their men and chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them at the descent. And the hearts of the people ^(A)melted and became as water.

¹¹ And ^(A)as soon as we heard it, ^(B)our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for ^(C)the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.

⁹ and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, ^(A)and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land ^(B)melt away before you.

³⁶ And as for those of you who are left, ^(A)I will send faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. The ^(B)sound of a ^(C)driven leaf shall put them to flight, and they shall flee as one flees from the sword, and they shall fall when none pursues.

^7 (A)And when they say to you, ‘Why do you groan?’ you shall say, ‘Because of the news ^(B)that it is coming. ^(C)Every heart will melt, and ^(D)all hands will be feeble; every spirit will faint, and ^(E)all knees will be weak as water. ^(F)Behold, it is ^(G)coming, and it will be fulfilled,’” declares the Lord God.

The New Generation Circumcised

5 As soon as all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites ^(A)who were by the sea, ^(B)heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over, their hearts ^(C)melted and ^(D)there was no longer any spirit in them because of the people of Israel.
