²⁴ Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold bar, his sons^(A) and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor.^(B)

⁹ Those who want to get rich^(A) fall into temptation and a trap^(B) and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money^(C) is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith^(D) and pierced themselves with many griefs.^(E)

²⁶ Over Achan they heaped^(A) up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day.^(B) Then the Lord turned from his fierce anger.^(C) Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor^[a](D) ever since.

²⁷ So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.^(A) Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children^(B) and little ones at the entrances to their tents.^(C)

²⁸ Then Moses said, “This is how you will know^(D) that the Lord has sent me^(E) to do all these things and that it was not my idea: ²⁹ If these men die a natural death and suffer the fate of all mankind, then the Lord has not sent me.^{(F) 30} But if the Lord brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth^(G) and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead,^(H) then you will know that these men have treated the Lord with contempt.^(I)”

³¹ As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart^(J)
